I posted a lot in this thread before listening to the show where Tom introduced the concept. I hereby retract most of it. I can't be bothered to go back and look, but offhand I can say that Robert Pollard has definitely earned whatever scruff he wants.

William Empson wrote a seminal lit-crit book titled Seven Types of Ambiguity. I had a copy of it at one time but never got all the way through it, so I don't know whether "What the hell is that under your chin?" was one of the seven types.

To be honest (and this is super-embarrassing):
I thought he did not win a Nobel, so I'll leave up my stupidity for all to admire.
He may have won the Nobel but he did not earn his beard, but this guy did.(Even though he has no beard.)
