http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=414
So you got a beach boy, a crap singer, and Warren Fucking Oates!
-
They also just put out House of Games. Cant wait to drop $45 for that.

Fantastic Mamet/Ricky Jay commentary on that one. ($25.89 (http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=17629085))!
-
I own the limited edition Two-Lane Blacktop tin box from Anchor Bay. Comes with a cool key chain!
Kudos to Criterion for putting it out. More people will see it = good thing.
(I bought House of Games - one of my favs - but haven't checked it out yet.)

Indeed we did!

Hey, mine's tomorrow. Just goes to show how unoriginally many of our parents passed the time during the cold month of January.

Hey, mine's tomorrow. Just goes to show how unoriginally many of our parents passed the time during the cold month of January.
That makes 3 FOT birthdays on 9/20!

Sort of creepy, don't you think?

That is kinda weird. The three of us also share a birthday with the Nelson twins, FYI.

My nephew turns 1 on 9/20.

You guys should make an oath to never cut your hair. Also, wear leather vests with no shirts underneath.
I had a Nelson Twins folder when I was in elementary school.

Happy birthday Omar!!!!!!!!!

Happy birthday me!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the bday wishes. I created a new FOT birthday thread, so this one could be reserved for future Criterion chit-chat.

Criterion just announced its February 2008 slate:
(http://www.criterion.com/content/images/full_boxshot/421_box_348x490.jpg) (http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=421)(http://www.criterion.com/content/images/full_boxshot/422_box_348x490.jpg) (http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=422)
(http://www.criterion.com/content/images/full_boxshot/423_box_348x490.jpg) (http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=423)
Has anyone seen Walker?
-
The Last Emperor is a 4-disc (!) set.
-
It's about time Criterion got around to the Chuck Norris catalog.
Too easy?
-
Everytime Chuck Norris blinks a Criterion DVD pops out. Then he rips it in two with his bare hands.
-
I saw Walker years ago I remember that even though its supposed to be a historical pic that at some points you see current magazines being read with Walker being the cover subject.
-
Everytime Chuck Norris blinks a Criterion DVD pops out. Then he rips it in two with his bare hands.
I would like to propose a variation on the Chuck Norris jokes, which have become Urban Outfitters t-shirt gags by now. I'll leave the premise open, but the basic idea is crediting Norris for something other than toughness. This might be best for another thread, but here's an example:
Chuck Norris has no tear ducts. Every time he blinks, Criterion releases it on DVD and an association of French critics sheds tears of joy that wash his eyes out.
-
Pierrot le fou was a given, about time it got good treatment. Emperor I'm not so sure about. Haven't seen Walker - for a minute I thought it was The Walker, the new-ish Paul Schrader movie (which is not that bad, like a companion piece to American Gigolo and Light Sleeper). Alex Cox is interesting though, at least in a trainwreck kind of way.
-
Criterion-worthy cover art:

I will buy the shit out of that special edition - and leave it on the shelf, unseen, for ages.
-

Yes!
Wish-list DVD releases:
* The Mother and the Whore
* Alice in the Cities
* Kings of the Road (In the Course of Time)
* C*cks*cker Blues
-
Yeah, some early Wenders would be great (and doesn't seem that implausible).
-
Yeah, some early Wenders would be great (and doesn't seem that implausible).
You wouldn't think so, but apparently not. I bought "The Wim Wenders Collection" because it included The American Friend and Lightning Over Water, and when I saw "The Wim Wenders Collection II" on Amazon, I assumed that it would include early films. But no:
Room 666
Tokyo-Ga
Wrong Move
Lightning Over Water*
The Scarlet Letter
A Trick of Light
The American Friend*
Notebook on Cities & Clothes*
*On The Wim Wenders Collection [Part 1]"
I'm very surprised that Jean Eustache's work is not available either ... art film director that committed suicide. What's not to like?
-
Yeah I know, the collection (esp II) are a bit disappointing, at least in terms of what films are included (although Room 666 is awesome). The early ones would've been great to get hold of - so I can ditch my old TV rips and whatnot.
-
I'm very excited for this:
Hopefully they'll be able to fix the typo on the side of the package before March 25.
-
That looks interesting. Mr. Freedom is nuts.
-
Mr. Freedom is nuts.
Have you seen it?
I haven't heard of William Klein or any of his films, but they look like they'd be pretty fun, Jodorowsky-esque type stuff.

-
Mr. Freedom is nuts.
Have you seen it?
I have. It's pretty outrageous, a very 68-era blunt critique of America and capitalism. In brief, the Mr. Freedom of the title is an American anti-communist superhero based in Paris, who on the one hand saves the world from evil, on the other rapes and beats people up at will. Basically, he's an asshole.
It's perhaps better on paper than in execution, and it suffers from a low budget (especially since many of the scenes call for rather spectacular costumes, sets and effects), but it's funny and worth seeing nevertheless. Haven't seen the others.
-
Sundance has been running Polly Maggoo a lot lately and it was on again tonight. It was suitably delirious. More of that blunt American vapidism critique crimestick mentioned, but the French come off kinda bad too, so I didn't hurl my giant foam finger at the teevee. I fell asleep and missed the last 10 minutes though.
-
I recorded it last night. When I'll have the gumption to watch it, I don't know, though
-
Hey fellow FOTs...
I know that a lot of folks hate the idea of film snobbery/extravagant sales pricing, but I really like how Criterion treats the films they put out. I know I'm not alone on that. So,what underrated film (in your eyes) do you think deserves the criterion treatment?
I'd like to see Danny Boyle's Trainspotting followup "A Life Less Ordinary" as a Criterion DVD. For whatever reason, I love that film. I've never met anyone else whose even seen it.
-
Which one? You must mean A Life Less Ordinary. I liked Millions better (not to mention Trainspotting and 28 Days Later; didn't care for Beaches, however). I really wanted to like A Life, and I have quite a high tolerance for that kind of film, but I thought it tried too hard to be eccentric and charming. Of course, it doesn't help that I find Cameron Diaz grating; Ewan McGregor's charm doesn't go very far for me, either (though I thought he did a good job in Trainspotting).
-
Criterion wish list (in many of these cases a general dvd wish list, actually)
Films that I've seen:
Chimes at Midnight
Life is Sweet
Maborosi
Mirror
The Thin Red Line (want a director's cut)
Haven't seen:
An Actor's Revenge
Celine & Julie Go Boating (opinions on this?)
A Brighter Summer Day
Satantango
The TAMI Show
Also there's a thread on the Criterionforum message board (http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23) listing forthcoming titles that have been confirmed in one way or another. The most intriguing titles for me are John Huston's Wise Blood, which they're trying to get, and the various Mizoguchi films.
-
Ooh, Wise Blood would be awesome. Brad Dourif's greatest moment.
Second Thin Red Line.
(You probably knew, but Satantango is already out, albeit not by Criterion.)
As for me, I would love to see
Crime Wave (by John Paizs, not the Raimi/Coen one)
Judex (by Georges Franju)
The Scenic Route (by Mark Rapaport)
All three: bizarre, unique masterpieces, three of my all-time favorites. None of them are available on DVD at all, they're not even widely available as bootlegs (and thus not discussed that much).
-
(You probably knew, but Satantango is already out, albeit not by Criterion.)
I think it quickly went out of print.
-

Have you seen "Sunshine"? I liked that one a lot. This thread made me realise that I'm a bigger Danny Boyle fan than I'd thought. I like every one of his movies that I've seen.
-
(You probably knew, but Satantango is already out, albeit not by Criterion.)
I think it quickly went out of print.
Artificial Eye released it as a 3 disc set in late 2006, and it's still very much available (http://www.amazon.co.uk/S%C3%A1t%C3%A1ntang%C3%B3-Peter-Berling/dp/B000HRLWQM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1202685203&sr=8-1). (R2)

i would love to see maborosi on criterion, or anything by hirokazu koreeda. especially after life, though.
also, putting out a whole edward yang set would seem appropriate. it's surprising that yiyi is the only one of his films that is easily obtainable.
-
The Thin Red Line (want a director's cut)
Right there with you. I also read that Malick was going to recut The New World for a dvd release.

I ended up buying this Artifical Eye version of Bela Tarr's Satantango and finished watching it tonight (it took about 3 nights)
Here are some of the imdb keywords for this 7 1/2 hour film:
Animal Abuse
Long Take
Countryside
Hopelessness
Poverty
So yeah, some of it was kinda funny.
No kidding. Among other things, you get a mix of some of the most punishing sequences I've ever seen and some wicked satire (the non-funny kind). One character babbles the same piece of exposition for at least 6-8 minutes straight. There's a drunken, accordian-fueled, barroom dance sequence that went on SO GODDAMN LONG that I was giddily cracking up. A fat, wheezing, alcoholic, shut-in doctor goes out in the rain to buy brandy... this takes almost an hour.
I think because the running time is so enormous I was able to settle in and adjust to the slow pace better than I have with a lot of 90-120 minute films (including Tarr's own Werckmeister Harmonies). The B&W cinematography looks amazing, and the sound design noticeably sticks out as being effective.
Ultimately, I had to speed up a few of these scenes, but not many. One that I did have to fast forward through was the unnervingly ugly little girl tormenting the cat. I was somewhat relieved to find out there was a vet present and it now lives with Tarr (so it certainly fared better than the horse in Andrei Rublev, at least).
This film is a singular experience, to say the least, and a worthwhile one, if they ever put out a decent US dvd.

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
President Baseball
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
It’s Raining Membranes
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.
-
Yes! I couldn't be more excited. About time too. I think this:
they will be priced to match our standard-def editions
is absolute key, and very clever by Criterion. There's been much speculation about how impossibly expensive Criterion BD would have to be considering how much their standard discs cost, but this is very reassuring. I've been waiting for news like this - I will now make the transition as soon as possible.
(The people of Newbridge were right about blue!)
-
Not much point getting Blu-Ray w/ my tv, so I'm merely left wondering if this means Chungking Express and Bottle Rocket are coming out in standard editions too. Come on, Criterian, don't let me down!
-
They will. BD is not a standard format yet, and I think they realize it would be suicide to abandon standard DVDs. The average Criterion customer doesn't seem like an early adopter to me - Blu-ray needs to become a household format first. (And I think the projected retail price for Criterion BDs is a good way to hurry that process.)
-
Blu-Ray will never be standard format IMO. The only reason so many people have them is because they have PS3's and if they didn't exist there would be very few people with high definition players. My thought is that once high speed internet becomes more widespread digital distribution will be the way to go and we'll see the same thing as MP3's and CD's with MPEG4's (or whatever) and DVDs.
I just don't buy into the idea that most movie watchers will repurchase their collection and buy a new player for a little increase in quality. Most people buying HDTV's aren't purchasing 50-60 inch screens where you can tell a huge difference between Blu-Ray and a DVD on an upconvert player. It's not like the huge change we experienced with VHS to DVD. My feeling is that Blu-Ray is going to flop big-time.
-
I think blu-ray has a chance of making it. Most (if not all) players are backwards compatable, so you really don't have to repurchase your dvd collection.
I was a hi-def skeptic for a long time, but I'm sold on it now.
-
My vote goes for Out Of The Blue

I totally vote for President Baseball.

Anybody see that Critierion is releasing The Red Balloon and Paddle To The Sea? These were classic "edu-tainment" movies that we'd watch as kids whenever it was raining outside. They'd always drag us into the cafeteria and show us the movie on a terrible vhs tape. Now, thanks to Critierion, the films have been re-transferred and they look gorgeous. Paddle To The Sea is especially awesome for those Canucks among us:

Criterion released them but didn't make them part of the "Collection" so that they might attract more of a family audience. They pulled a similar trick a while back with Good Boy! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0326900/)
-

I saw The Red Balloon in the store and wondered why it was cheap (for a Criterion disc, anyway - $15) and had no spine number. That explains it.
-
Does Netflix replace DVD's with the Criterion release usually? I want to see Thief of Bagdad when it comes out but it looks like they already have a copy to rent...
-
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I wouldn't count on it.
-
I've never seen the film, but this cover is awesome:

Wow, that's surprising, but very cool - first Maddin for Criterion. Brand Upon the Brain! is great. Big fan over here.
(Braggin': just corresponded with Maddin about what images to include in an interview with his frequent collaborator George Toles, to be published in the film journal I'm an editor of.)

I haven't seen the film either, but I think I remember hearing that it wasn't going to be released on DVD. Another point for Criterion, I guess.

Sure! If you like watching people eat poop for 3 hours.
-
Oh, 3 hours? That's a bit much.
-
Oh, 3 hours? That's a bit much.
Well, it's not actually 3 hours long...I was exaggerating. It's probably 2. But with all those wonderful Criterion extras, heck, you could get 6 hours of mindless torture.
I thought it looked good (as far as the way it was shot) and it had an interesting angle, but all the same, it's pretty brutal. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed films that have disturbed me before-- because they seem to have some bigger purpose, but Salo was not one of them.
-
I put Salo in the same category as Bum Fights. Totally worthless. I'd rather watch Cannibal Holocaust or something before I'd watch Salo again.
Mod, please replace all reference to SALO: 120 DAYS OF SODOM with AIR BUD. Thanks.
-
I haven't seen Salo since I was a kid, so I wouldn't know. I'll probably check it out when it's out on DVD again.
-
I haven't seen Salo since I was a kid ...
More poop, slave!
-
Haha, yeah I realize that sounds terrible. I guess I was 13-14? Too young, anyway.
-
Salo its the high art version of a scat film with added elements of brutal torture.
-
!
So 2G1C is not as original and groundbreaking as I thought.

HAHA!

I hope you don't mind, but I think that's my new signature.

I watched a second of 2G1C before I turned it off. But I'll tell you this: It's definitely peanut butter.
I think you might have caught the twist-laden M. Night Shyamalan remake by mistake.
-
I think it's far more likely that it's shit. Much cheaper. No special effects necessary.
-
It really depends on the state. Certain states have tax incentives that actually make using real shit more expensive.
-
2G1C?
-
Ignorance is bliss, Jc. Don't google it.
-
I defer to your superior knowledge, Jasong. But surely you'd grant that, those special circumstances aside, filming straightforward scat shenanigans between two consenting (well, maybe) adults would be a hell of a lot cheaper than going through the folderol to make peanut butter look and behave like real poop.
Note: I read that whole Emily Gould article. And then rewatched the CNN clip. Guess I felt masochistic this morning.
-
I was actually just kidding. Though I am sick and tired of the fake-poop lobby growing fat off of our taxpayer dollars!
-
I was just thinking they got a peanut butter enema. I just can't see real poop looking like that otherwise. Maybe this belongs in the "gross" thread. Sorry, guys.
-
Oh, it can look like that. (Now I'm even sorrier than you are, Beth.)
And, Jasong, what?! You were kidding?!?????????????
-
They must have had a very special diet beforehand then, to get the proper consistency.

I believe my first reaction to the video, posted on this very board, was something like, "What did that poor girl eat?"

I'm holding off on crits for the moment. Waiting for nem Blu-rays.
(Did you guys read that Tartan went under a couple of weeks ago, btw? Sad story.)
-
No single-disc Faces?
I still need to get around to buying the whole Cassavetes box set. I've seen everything on it except Shadows. I couldn't finish that lousy documentary.
Also, according to DVD Savant Husbands is supposedly coming out in 08/09 as part of some series called "Martini Movies." Whatever, I just hope it's the longer version.
-
yipee I can replace my old DVD of Bookie
-
Criterion needs to focus less on reissuing movies they've already put out and working on putting movies that still aren't on DVD. A few that come to mind are the African Queen and the Magnificent Ambersons.

Yeah, seriously. Can't anyone get the ball rolling on that one?
-
I have a great special edition R2 DVD of The African Queen. I'm surprised to hear it's not yet released in North America.

I'm happy. More Melville is always a good thing.
Anyways, I watched Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters last night. Holy moley, that was spectacular.

Well, they can't just license anything they want. I have no idea what the rights situations are w/ those two. This is pure speculation, but maybe they save the reissues for lean months when they need to pad out the schedule?
-
Good, now Netflix will finally have copies of Woman Under the Influence and Killing of a Chinese Bookie. I'll probably have to wait months to actually get them like Thief of Baghdad.
-
Does anybody have any inside information about when the original Wim Wenders stuff (In The Course of Time, Alice in the Cities, etc) will be re-released on DVD? And how about Jean Eustache's catalog?

Haha, yeah I know what you mean. I'll see posts sometime by people going "CRITERION SHOULD MAKE A DVD FOR THAT" on IMDB, as if the company just says "Let's do Star Wars next!"
I think the Magnificent Ambersons may be in public domain, as quite a few Orson Welles movies are. I see why Criterion may be reluctant to put out movies that people could get for free, but they've done a great job with lots of public domain titles (like M). African Queen is now domestically owned by Paramount Pictures, who I don't think have any Criterions.

I believe lots of Welles' stuff used to be pretty stubbornly (and moronically) protected by the Welles estate or whatever, making many of his films difficult to distribute in newfangled formats like DVD (even though they usually found their way onto some seedy Spanish R2 versions, as in the case of Ambersons and Othello). I suppose the people who control them have softened up in recent years, what with most of his stuff now being available, but I have a feeling that Ambersons and possibly Othello are among those still considered "problematic". Otherwise we'd surely have seen Criterion releases of them by now. There might also be issues with prints, etc.
-
From Ask the AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/ask_the_a_v_club_february_22):
So why can't you sit in the comfort of your own home and watch sparkling, features-packed editions of The Magnificent Ambersons, Chimes At Midnight, Othello, and The Immortal Story? Two words: Beatrice Welles. The daughter of the legendary director is notoriously protective of her father's work, and even caused the DVDs of Citizen Kane and Touch Of Evil to be held up in the past. Whenever Welles scholars work to increase access to Welles' short films and unfinished works, Beatrice Welles brings the big squash.
-
I'm hoping The Other Side of the Wind finally gets completed by Peter Bogdanovich at some point soon.
I saw that Chimes at Midnight is up on YouTube right now, for those who are interested.

Ha. What, is she trying to protect his reputation by not revealing the closely-guarded secret that he kind of lost his shit and made a lot of mediocre-to-awful work after Citizen Kane? Best of luck to her.

Didn't like the Chungking Express cover at first but it's growing on me. I have no interest in Fanfan La Tulipe anyway but that one is hideous.

Yes.

I like that there's not even a movie title. And yeah, I kinda wanted to see Criterion art for bad (or at least not "classy") movies. Sorry, everyone, but the World Domination project will just have to be put on hold. :-\
-
I only posted that because I made it years ago (for a similar discussion on another forum).
I will have a go at some more questionable titles.
-
Is there actually a Criterion Lone Star? (I assume that's what the movie is) If not, there definitely should be. John Sayles movies usually make me feel talked down to, but that one's pretty terrific.
-
No there isn't, but there definitely should be.

Michael Ritchie is an underappreciated director (or just unknown to most). He's hit-and-miss, but check out this awesome 1-2-3 punch he made in the early seventies:
Prime Cut (1972)
The Candidate (1972)
Smile (1975)
To make those three amazing, wildly different films back-to-back-to-back is quite a feat. (Consider them all recommended.)
You totally left out probably one of the best sports movies ever the original The Bad News Bears
Has anyone seen Downhill Racer? It's a 1969 Ritchie skiing drama starring Redford and Hackman, so I suspect it's one the best films ever made. As far as I know it's never been released on DVD.
It's on my wanted list! Sounds great, doesn't it?
EDIT: It's actually out on R2 DVD!

LOL
I think I mentioned I eventually watched Downhill Racer. As bland as you can imagine.
The Criterion BluRays are out, as you know. They are region locked, which is frustrating, so I've had to resort to - ahem - alternate routes. Holy shit do they look great (Chungking and Third Man, haven't checked Bottle Rocket yet).

Hmmm... I think Sony owns California Split and that went out of print pretty quickly. I'll just assume the other one is Joe's Apartment.

They're doing a Criterion of What Happens in Vegas already? That was quick! I hope it's on Blu-ray with an Ashton Kutcher commentary track.

I'd like a commentary track from a "Film historian" like Ben Lyons.

Brad Dourif's finest moment.

Recent posts on the Criterion forum have also confirmed Linklater's subUrbia, Leo McCarey's Make Way for Tomorrow, and Bruno Dumont's La vie de Jésus and L'humanité as in the works.
The most exciting news is this:
http://janusfilms.com/dillingerisdead/
-
Leo McCarey's Make Way for Tomorrow
I know a bunch of hardcore cinephiles who will positively cream their pants over this. McCarey has some very, very devoted followers, and Make Way for Tomorrow is considered the ultimate unsung masterpiece in a career mostly forgotten today. (And Ozu completely stole the story for his Tokyo Story, etc etc.)
That Ferreri film sounds interesting. Don't think I've ever heard of it.
-
Brad Dourif's finest moment.
I think someone's forgetting Myst III: Exile.
-
Recent posts on the Criterion forum have also confirmed Linklater's subUrbia,
I remember this as a big piece of junk. Am I mis-remembering? Is it critically admired?
-
I remember when I watched it I was thinking, "This STINKS!" I have yet to change my mind. Those kids (the characters, not the actors) were trying too hard to be cool/hip/"alternative." Sleeping in a tent in the middle of your garage? C'mon!
The only real Suburbia is the older one about the punks in Southern California, with the dogs and the nails in the walls, and raiding people's iceboxes for food.
And for my money, the most enjoyable movie about suburban living is still Over The Edge. Where's the Criterion version of that movie?
-
I thought subUrbia was passable (kinda like those early Black Flag singles), but it's definitely a minor Linklater work. I think Criterion just wants to maintain their relationship with him, and it will hopefully lead to a Before Sunrise/Before Sunset release.
Steve in NoHo - Over the Edge is great, but Criterion would have to license it from Warner Brothers, who released a pretty solid DVD w/ a director/screenwriters commentary track. I'm hoping Criterion will get Matt Dillon into the collection via My Bodyguard.

I don't think its a remembered movie at all, and was not critically acclaimed. I would imagine its just something a Linklaters they have access to and are just releasing it for the sake of his name may move units. I would be they would release anything of his if they could, except maybe his remake of Bad News Bears.

That movie was awful! Terrible! Linklater is a bum. I've never been a fan of that guy. I'm interested in that Orson Welles movie that he's done but I, of course, expect to be disappointed.

Aw man, now I feel like a jerk!
You see, one of the things I'm a jerk about is I kinda jump down people's throats if they go "aw man I wish this thing was on DVD" and it IS on DVD. If you searched throughout the internet you'd see me doing this on many other forums. I don't know why I still do it. It doesn't get me anywhere in life. Not fact-checking with amazon.com before making a message board post isn't that big of a character flaw. Nobody likes a know-it-all. Or, a gun-jumper. I was a gun-jumper, with terrible reading comprehension. AND a jerk.
My apologies.

I like know-it-alls, gun-jumpers, Little Polly Perfects, and Jixby - I also like you.

Ran is now out of print due a rights issue and the planned blu-ray has been cancelled, so grab that one while you can. And yes, that is the sequel to Patrick Dempsey's Run, because ONE WOULD NOT EXPECT THEM TO RELEASE SUCH A THING.

Not too long ago, I bought Criterion's The Man Who Fell to Earth to replace my ancient (and Bowie cockless) ancient version I taped off Sci-Fi when I was in high school. Every time I rage at a twelve episode TV series release on four DVDs to make room for pointless bonus material and I begin to fill with rage, I look at the set, whose special features include a hard copy of the damn out-of-print book the movie was based on, and I begin to love my fellow human beings again. Thank you, Criterion.
-
(and Bowie cockless)
Wait, WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUT?
-
(and Bowie cockless)
Wait, WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUT?
"and ye the Lord said unto them, any man who should watcheth Man Who Fell to Earth with out Bowie's cock shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
-
My parents took me to see The Man Who Fell To Earth when I was like four years old. Even then, I was like, this shit is really, really weird. At the time I chalked it up to the fact that it, like the rest of the world of adults at that time, was just incomprehensible to my little kid mind, until I saw it on TV late at night in college and realized no, I was right all along.
As it turns out, I was also right that all the adults around me were weird as hell too. In a genuinely freaky way, not in a "people-are-fucked" way.

Repulsion feels long overdue, so much so that I almost imagined it already being part of the collection (but I guess not). Feels vintage Criterion, in any case.
And even though Made in USA is minor Godard, Criterion's love affair with JLG won't stop until they've released, like, everything. Which is a lot. Why not, I say.

I hated Repulsion when I watched it a year or so ago but it was a terrible transfer. I definitely need to see it again with the Criterion treatment.
-
They'll also be releasing the 4-disc The Human Condition in July. Just saw the OOP dvds at my video store last week but think I'll hold off.

One more Godard for July. Only one of his I've ever liked that much was Pierrot Le Fou.

See? I'm so right about these things. Just wait til they announce the complete Histoire(s) du cinéma, then the JLG fanboys will really go nuts.
I like JLG fine, but his oeuvre is so all over the place, and he's been influenced by so many different (and conflicting) philosophies over the years that I find it almost impossible to fully embrace him. And I think almost nothing of his post-1980 stuff is very relevant at all. But he's still my favorite New Waver, I think. Never cared much for Truffaut.

I'm really glad to hear this from an actual film buff -- I can't tell you how many times I've almost had my beardo card revoked for not being that into Godard (though to be fair, I've only seen like 3 or 4 of his films). I do love Truffaut, though.
-
Dunno if I qualify as a film buff, but Godard never really did it for me, either. I really hated Alphaville, which I expected to love.
-
The only Godard film I've seen is Band of Outsiders. I liked it well enough. I'm a sucker for dancin', though.

Really looking forward to this August box set, which also marks their first co-production with the Hart Foundation:

-
I just bought The Battle of Algiers after renting it from the library. What a fantastic film. Criterion really did a great job with that release.
-
Criterion is teaming with Martin Scorsese to preserve and restore endangered film.
-
The Blu Ray line is really starting to heat up. Playtime, Repulsion and Last Year at Marienbad are all must-buys for me.
And yes, I nearly had a Hart Attack when the Nikkatsu Noir box was announced.
-
Although it will never happen, it would be cool for Criterion to get the rights back to "This is Spinal Tap." The Criterion version apparently has a bunch of stuff that isn't on the DVD that's out there now. I've heard that the commentary tracks are especially cool.
-

This is great for many reasons, but particularly because it means that the nearly-impossible-to-see A Brighter Summer Day (dir. by Edward Yang who also did "Yi Yi"), which I often cite as my all time favorite movie when pressed, is finally coming to DVD in a restored version. I only have it in a horribly degraded bootleg rip from an 15+ year-old Taiwanese laser disc, yet its so inexhaustibly powerful to me that I've watched it 3 times in this format (it's 4 hours long).

That's good to hear. I love Yi Yi and recently downloaded a mediocre copy of Summer Day that I have yet to watch.

I just recently bought one of those bootlegs and now I'm debating whether I should just sit tight for the Criterion. Last time I checked one of the boots was also uploaded in two parts on Google video.

Good to know, I'm going to need some time to decide what to blow my money on.

If you're like me and generally disregard extras, you might pick up some of their Essential Art House discs, which are usually cheaper, bare bones versions of deluxe titles. I got Life of Colonel Blimp that way for around $10.
On the other hand, now I've got this staring at me.

That's a good idea. I'm thinking about going back and picking up the Grand Illusion Art House disc. That being said, I think that the extras on most Criterion DVD's are quite worthwhile. The extras on The Battle of Algiers DVD, for example, are really well done and actually add something of value.
But if you're looking just for the movie, as most people are, then those Art House discs are the way to go.

Yeah, my thing is I usually netflix these so I just want to move on to the next film. That said, while most other studios' extras are marketing filler, Criterion's extras are usually (although not always) a cut above. Peter Cowie's Bergman commentaries are really useful, f'rinstance. And yeah, I've seen Battle of Algiers but never picked up that set. It did look outstanding though.

Right now, I'm thinking I'll fill out my Criterion Blu-Ray collection and pick up a couple of Eclipse sets. I'll be surprised if I don't make at least a couple trips, though. My self-control is nonexistant at this point.

Also announced was MONSOON WEDDING on DVD and Blu-Ray. WINGS OF DESIRE will also be released on Blu-Ray.
Nothing I'm interested in, unfortunately, though the Eclipse set sounds intriguing.
-
Well at least Wings of Desire is an amazing film, and I'm always up for more Makavejev.
-
Z is actually ending a week-long run here in DC tonight and I was thinking of seeing it. Guess I can wait three months. Never heard of Dusan Makavejev (thankfully a trend w/ Eclipse) but that set looks interesting.
-
Chris, with Makavejev, start with Sweet Movie and WR: Mysteries of the Organism. Maybe that'll be enough for you. Makavejev is definitely not for everyone and if you care not to explore his other work at least then you've seen his most important films. (I think they're of-the-times masterpieces.)
-
Well at least Wings of Desire is an amazing film,
Be serious. Sappy sentimental corniness at best

Was there a sequel to Wings of Desire? (not that LA remake w/ Elvis' former-son-in-law).

Ha! That was hilarious.
And Wings of Desire is good, dammit. 'Sappy' and 'sentimental' are HORRIBLE adjectives to describe that film. Forrest Gump is 'sappy' and 'sentimental'. Wings of Desire is 'Elegant' and 'poetic'.
But then again, that is subjective. Y'all still made me laugh though.
-
I made the mistake of going into B&N and just grabbing things and before I knew it I was buying 9 movies. At least they're some of my favorites.
-
When I go to the used bookstore, I buy any book that has a penguin on it. Is that the same deal? I mean, I am assuming you don't watch these DVDs just like I don't read the books, right?
-
Only other things I've gotten so far are UGETSU and the single-disc MONTEREY POP (but only for the Armond White essay ;)). I noticed B&N.com didn't mark down the Carl Dreyer box, much to the consternation of tweens and young adults everywhere.
-

You're not wrong, Dave.
I went to B&N yesterday - twice! - and picked up EUROPA, THREE FILMS BY HIROSHI TESHIGAHARA and THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH on Blu-Ray. I'll try to abstain from further trips until REPULSION comes out later this month.
-

Well in the case of the ones I actually buy they're films that I already love and have seen multiple times (the usual price of Criterion generally discourages from buying titles I haven't seen), but I get a whole lot from Netflix that sit on my computer unwatched.
-

Right. Because they are so expensive, I won't buy a Criterion that I haven't seen already. As such, I only own a handful of them.
-
Well, B & N/Criterion extracted their pound of flesh from me. I've dropped almost $100 during this sale. Then again, there usually aren't sales like this, so I guess it's worth it.
-
You dummy! You should've shown more self-control I say as I stare at Irene Jacob on my newly purchased copy of The Double Life of Veronique.
-
Yeah I ended up going on a second trip and getting 3 more. I'm probably done, but I plan on watching Woman in the Dunes to see if I want to get the Teshigahara box.
-
Here's my take so far:
EUROPA
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (Blu Ray)
THREE FILMS BY HIROSHI TESHIGAHARA
ACE IN THE HOLE
FIVE FILMS BY JOHN CASSAVETES
ECLIPSE SERIES 11: LARISA SHEPITKO
ACE IN THE HOLE and the Cassavetes box were gifts, so I haven't spent THAT much. Yet.
I started a job a couple weeks ago, and should get my first check this week. God help me, I'm planning to blow at least $200 more before the sale is through. I need that Imamura box. And the Rossellini Eclipse set. And REPULSION on Blu Ray.
Should I follow through on my proposed splurge, I will update this post with my most recent takings.
-
ACE IN THE HOLE and the Cassavetes box were gifts
I love Ace in the Hole and watch it pretty much every time it comes on the TV - which used to be a lot b/c I think it wasn't released on video for a long time. It's so mean.
-
Yeah, Criterion did a masterful job with Ace in the Hole.
I'm looking forward to watching the Friends of Eddie Coyle, which I picked up during this sale.

Just saw this for the first time yesterday. Douglas is great.

I watched Eddie Coyle a couple weeks ago and it's pretty great. Mitchum is top notch. Also, it must be the most faithful adaptation of a novel ever. Even the dialogue in the film is pretty much verbatim from the book. Both are worth checking out, but maybe don't read and then watch so close together, as I did.
-
You rich people with your money.
-
Yeah, you guys ever hear of Netflix?
(I actually sold all my DVDs years ago to avoid being compelled to collect yet another thing.)
Eddie Coyle (movie) is great, though my wife hated it. Total dude movie. If I liked this Peter Yates movie would I also like Mother, Jugs & Speed?
-
Yeah, you guys ever hear of Netflix?
(I actually sold all my DVDs years ago to avoid being compelled to collect yet another thing.)
Yeah, I mostly use Netflix and then only buy the titles I really love.

Me too. When I really like a movie, I tend to watch it a bunch of times, which makes Netflix impractical.

Plus, generally the Criterion booklets have some interesting essays and whatnot.

November:
A Christmas Tale
Gomorrah
Downhill Racer
The Golden Age of Television (3-disc set of old teleplays like Requiem for a Heavyweight, not a cleverly disguised Fishing with John reissue)
Looks like they've really gone all in w/ IFC Filims. CHE is supposed to be coming soon as well. Kind of uneasy about that since those films probably wouldn't be hurting for dvd distribution otherwise. Of course, if it means there might be a Criterion IN THE LOOP I take that back.
-
Downhill Racer
You are kidding.
-
Downhill Racer
You are kidding.
I dunno. I think Michael Ritchie is a pretty underrated director. I don't really see a problem with Criterion releasing it.
Besides, they've released worse films in the past (Armageddon).
-
Hey, I love Michael Ritchie, I think he's criminally underrated. I think the Prime Cut/The Candidate/Smile/Bad News Bears quadfecta is arguably one of the best back-to-back runs of any director, but Downhill Racer is just not very good.
-
You've got a point, Martin. A Candidate and/or Smile Criterion would have been awesome, because the current DVD releases of those films aren't very good. Most likely, Downhill Racer was probably the easiest Ritchie film for Criterion to obtain the rights to.
-

Gotta say the cover for Gomorrah might be the most unintentionally funny one they've ever done.

Wow, it looks like a mediocre entry from that thread on The Auteurs.

Big Man Obama?
-
That Gommorah cover is ridiculous. If that was what they were going for, they should have just put a picture of a backhoe on the cover.
-
It seems like they've been in a bit of a slump lately, artwork-wise. THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION and MONSOON WEDDING look terrible. That GOMORRAH cover, however, may be the absolute worst. It's unforgivably stupid, and I hope they change it before it's released.
The movie itself is pretty good, though.
-
I'm not sure where to put this but I figured this thread is as good a place as any:
I just got the Criterion Cassavetes box and, as such, no longer need my Criterion copy of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. It's in great shape and everything, I just don't need it twice. Does anybody on here want it? It's free to the first person who sends me a PM.
EDIT: This has been claimed. Thanks for playing!

Criterion/IFC deal confirmed (http://www.screendaily.com/news/ifc-films-teams-up-with-criterion-collection-for-prestige-dvd-series/5005091.article?referrer=RSS). Looks like 2010 will be heavy on contemporary stuff (no mention of IN THE LOOP yet).
Meanwhile, I agree that the quality of their artwork has become pretty erratic lately. If you've never heard of this title, could the cover possibly pique your interest?

I sent an e-mail a couple weeks ago (before the news of the IFC deal broke) asking about a possible Criterion release of IN THE LOOP. No word yet.
I can't imagine they wouldn't release it. From what I understand, it was pretty successful theatrically.
-
I wonder if that IFC deal means that IFC will start showing Criterion releases on their cable channel.

Yeah, it still seems to be doing well here in DC after several weeks. Well enough that it hopefully won't end up languishing on Blockbuster shelves as a rental-only "exclusive," at least.
I wonder if that IFC deal means that IFC will start showing Criterion releases on their cable channel.
I've noticed them showing things like the Kurosawas and other samurai films at odd hours for some time. For as long as I had IFC, actually.

The AK100 Box (http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/678). Glad I own a lot of these already so I won't be too tempted to spend the $300-400.

For Jan:
Che
Rossellini's War Trilogy
Eclipse Series 19: Chantel Akerman in the 70s
Paris, Texas
Very excited for Paris, Texas.
-
OMG, yes. Paris Texas is one of my all-time favs.
-
OMG, yes. Paris Texas is one of my all-time favs.
I saw it for the first time this summer and couldn't believe how great Harry Dean Stanton is. I'd love to see the blu-ray.
-
OMG, yes. Paris Texas is one of my all-time favs.
You know, somehow I have missed seeing this all this time?
-
What I can't believe is, how has it taken them this long to get to Paris, Texas? That's like the quintessential Criterion film. I got to see it in a theatre last year and it was just mindblowing. I'd seen it before, but seeing those Robby Muller landscapes projected large was just incredible.
To be honest, due to the pricetag, it's rare that I actually shell out to own a Criterion film. However, Che and Paris, Texas will almost certainly be making their way onto my DVD shelf this January.

I think that's why some of the DVDs go out of print, as well. Same thing with books - other pubs will snap up rights if something good expires.
-
I am in the middle of the Killing of a Chinese Bookie, which I heard wonderful things about for years, but my too early exposure to Faces kept me from trying it.

Apparently, the SD and BD editions of The Third Man are going out of print. The Blu-Ray is already sold out on Amazon. The DVD version, however, is still widely available.
Also looks like there will be another 50% off sale at B&N the week of November 8.

Seriously considering buying the blu-ray so I can possibly sell it for a lot more later. This is one of my favorite films so naturally I want to exploit it as much as possible (see my upcoming Direct TV ad w/ Orson Welles).

I'll have to grab that blu-ray during the sale even though I already have the standard DVD and don't have HD playing capabilities.

I have enough to spare for 2 DVD's. That's it.

Incidentally, Hunger is currently running on Sundance on Demand
-
Always surprised by current cinema showing up as Criterion, but Hunger is certainly worthy.
Make Way for Tomorrow: this will make so many of my cinefile friends cream their pants.

Taking no prisoners in 2010! I love it!

Isn't that part of their deal with IFC?

Probably.

I'm digging the Seth cover on "Make Way for tomorrow"

I haven't seen any articles about this but Criterion keeps releaasing more and more files on Netflix Instant Watch. I am using that alot lately, hopefully they keep it up.

Pretty excited about Bigger Than Life in March. James Mason is so crazy awesome.

No shit, such an amazing movie. Great news.

I saw Bill Hader do a James Mason impression on a talk show one time that made me laugh for days. I don't watch it, but if he isn't doing any funny James Mason sketches on SNL, he really should be.

Jon Hamm's James Mason was pretty good.

It is nice for being able to watch them but streaming video kind of takes away from the Criterion treatment when it comes to audio and video.

That's when you buy a Roku my friend...that's when you buy a Roku.
Still, yeah, no bonus features.
-
It's still streaming quality- I have a 360 with instant streaming and there is a very noticable difference btw. the DVD's and streaming. First, and this doesn't apply to every Criterion but a lot are in 5.1 sound which Netflix instant watch doesn't support because of the codecs. Second, streaming quality is almost always going to be a degradation of the original source. It is cool that all these movies are available to just watch, but one of the big reasons you get Criterions is for the quality of the audio and video and a lot of that is lost in the transfer to a different streaming codec.

List of 35 Criterion films streaming on Netflix (http://criterioncast.com/2009/12/21/criterion-on-netflix/), in case you're bored during the holidays. I'm telling you, CRIA CUERVOS is one of the most dead-on films about childhood I've seen.
EDIT: Just noticed some others aren't listed there: Spirit of the Beehive, Grey Gardens, etc...

Much good stuff on there. Closely Watched Trains is probably top 3 of all time for me.

You can watch about anything Criterion has released at the forum The Auteurs but that does cost up to 5 bucks per viewing, pretty awesome quality though.

Not Criterion but has anybody seen The Whole Shootin Match? Just watched it and thought it was awesome they were right a mini classic.

You know, I watched a little bit of a Criterion on my 360 w/Netflix and it's much better quality than every other standard definition movie that's streaming. I take my concerns back, and now I see that the HD content is being added as well like Last Emperor.
-
Looking forward to Dillinger is Dead but don't know what's up w/ that cover. I really like the theatrical re-release poster.
April's releases have been announced as well (http://www.criterion.com/library/dvd/criterion/soon/expanded/spine_number).
-
From what I can see there are 75 Criterions on instant watch right now and a handful of those are in HD.

Bummer. Don't hold your breath waiting for most of these to get a rerelease:
Dear Criterion collectors,
Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.
Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:
Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik
Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.
Happy viewing!

Has anyone seen Ride with the Devil? Am I correct in remembering that it was supposed to be pretty bad?
I haven't seen it but I'm interested because it's based on a book by an under-appreciated writer that I absolutely love, Daniel Woodrell. A movie based on another of his novels, Winter's Bone, played at Sundance and has some decent word-of-mouth.
-
Fart - Coup de Torchon is like one of my fave movies ever.
I used to have that DVD and let it go in one of my many in and out of state moves.
-
May titles. NOT TOO SHABBY:
Stagecoach
By Brakhage Vol. 2 + both volumes on blu-ray
Walkabout and M on blu-ray
Oshima's Outlaw 60's on Eclipse
Could not be more pumped for the Oshima set, although "pumped" RE: Oshima perhaps conjures some graphic imagery.
-
Unghh.
M is already out on R2 Blu-ray (Masters of Cinema).
Can't wait to see The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes in hi-def!
-
I gotta say, Criterion is KILLING IT this year. At least half of what's on the docket is on my Must Purchase list.
-
May titles. NOT TOO SHABBY:
Stagecoach
FINALLY. This will be good. (Although admittedly I will watch anything - anything - with Andy Devine in it.)
I'm very excited to be hosting a screening of some Ladislav Starevich shorts in my town next week. I've always considered him a major Criterion blind spot, and I'm always scanning their upcoming list for his name. It would be amazing to see him get a similar kind of treatment to that Jean Painleve set that came out last year.
-
In something of a surprise, they just debuted on Hulu w/ the first six Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman films (http://ow.ly/18vyh), none of which they've released on dvd to this point. As Steinski might ponder, "what does it all mean?"
On another note, I watched REVANCHE on Netflix tonight. I don't recall seeing any serious detractors for this one yet, and it's easy to see why. What deliberately started off as a fairly compelling thriller defied my expectations and evolved into something more mature and truly existential. Definitely one of the better recent films I've seen.

Haven't seen REVANCE yet, but I intend to. I must say though, the power of the Criterion Canon is pretty fascinating. (And a bit problematic, but that in itself is nothing new.) Who would've even heard of REVANCE if it wasn't for the fact that Criterion immediately picked it up for distribution? They've promoted it quite heavily, so much so that at one point I suspected they had something to do with the financing or even the theatrical distribution. With their new-ish approach to releasing new films on DVD/BD - films that haven't been "tested by time", as it were - what then happens with their Canon? Is a new film then automatically deemed Quality, just like the old ones? Or is it damaging the classic Canon?
Interesting questions for any nerdy cinephile.
-
The latest Criterion newsletter clue suggests that they will release Crumb, probably with the Huey Louie Bluie Dewey Defeats Truman documentary as a supplment. I hope it gets a Blu-ray release so my dream of seeing Chuck Crumb in pristine high-def becomes reality!

Yeah - I want to be able to zoom in and finally be able to read what's written in those notebooks full of microscopic chickenscratch.

Janus did distribute it theatrically. They had seen it at a festival and decided to make it their first contemporary release in God knows how long, which pretty much made it a given for Criterion. For what it's worth, Criterion's mission statement has always been to release "important classic and contemporary films," and they're certainly not as all-over-the-place as in their laserdisc days. In the case of Benjamin Button (which they did zero production work on but picked up later) and Che, you could say they're "important" simply because they're ambitious releases by two major directors who the company is looking to work with again down the road. It can be easy to forget Criterion's a business first and foremost, and that while worthy their aims will never be purely canonical, and they're not always able to branch out in ways their critics want. I do think their taste in newer films can be a little aesthetically suspect at times (Ang Lee?), but I think they get it right more often than not, and they haven't given short shrift to the classics this year at least.
Incidentally, the newsletter also states Andrea Arnold is joining the collection this year, so I guess that means Fish Tank.
-
I agree with all that, Chris. I was merely reflecting on the impact Criterion have - for better or worse - on the current canon of Quality Films, and what happens when they get into the contemporary circuit. (Thanks for the Janus/Revance connection - I knew there was something.) The "Criterion Generation" is a very real concept, as I'm sure you're aware - many young cinephiles have been getting their film education, some almost exclusively, from the Crit catalogue for the last 15-20 years. You see the phenomenon everywhere, online and off, among academics, students and critics - if it's Criterion, they've seen it, and they love it, and it ends up on their "best of the century" polls; if it's not Criterion, chances are they haven't seen it at all. It sounds barbaric but, unfortunately, it's more common than one thinks.
I love Criterion, but their position as a tastemaker in the arthouse world is ripe for examination - in some sort of critical/academical fashion.
-
Yeah, I can't speak to how widespread that perception is on the academic level, but I know many unwisely look to Criterion as the "stamp of approval." Just look at their Facebook page and you see people constantly asking them to add the well-represented likes of Lynch, PT Anderson, the Coens, etc. for no reason other than the supposed prestige or artistic validation. In addition to successful brand marketing, this is partly a reflection of many of their American competitors' flaws or lack of similar resources. At least similarly great labels like Masters of Cinema and Second Run have been able to sustain themselves (so far) in the UK.

For me it's not even so much "if it gets a Criterion release, it's a great film", it's the knowledge that the quality of the release, regardless of your feelings on the particular film, is top of the line. They've done a great job of establishing the belief that they put a lot of love and care into their releases, which is something that can't be said for the majority of US DVD release.
-
Whats the name of the English version of Criterion that released House? Thats one where Criterion didnt do it again.

I believe you're thinking of Masters of Cinema.
As far as I know, HAUSU is still coming out on Criterion later this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they released it around Halloween, along with CRONOS.

Just think of it and watch it as a tv series (which it is, after all). It's frustrating at times but very much worth it. Don't skip the epilogue either.
Speaking of Fassbinder, there's a 205-minute "sci-fi" epic he made for German tv playing at MoMA this week. Glenn Kenney raves about it here (http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2010/04/out-in-the-real-world-in-real-time-fassbinders-welt-am-draht-world-on-wire.html). Just watched The Friends of Eddie Coyle last night. Un - bull - ievable. I never saw Night of the Hunter, but now I finally get why people love Robert Mitchum. And what a great ensemble cast - Peter Boyle, Richard Jordan, all those guys. It makes me wanna have a bleak 70s crime movie marathon.

Dude, you've got to see Night of the Hunter. It's weird and great. He's also terrifying in Cape Fear.
I just saw Equinox last night, mostly on the basis of the Criterion stamp of approval. It's just OK. Some pretty impressive cheap-o effects, but I can't really recommend it. The high point was realizing, about 20 minutes in that it starred a young Frank Bonner, who would go on to play Herb Tarleck on WKRP. In his youth he looked quite a bit like PFT - same cute little gap in his teeth and everything. (I hope I don't have to do a radio date with Larry da Perv for saying that.)

Great movie, but now I wish I'd read the book first. 95% of the dialogue is straight from it.
In addition to Night of the Hunter, Out of the Past is a must-see for anybody.
-
Dude, you've got to see Night of the Hunter. It's weird and great. He's also terrifying in Cape Fear.
Holy cow, this is seconded on both movies. Night of the Hunter in particular is amazing. One of the best movies ever. Lillian Gish is totally great in it-only movie Charles Laughton directed.
Pretty much most of his performances are just terrific - he did a shit load of movies in the 40s that are either film noir or war pictures. I was so bummed when he passed on.
-
I also really liked Pursued, though it's not one of the top-tier Mitchum movies. It's a strange hybrid of western and noir. The photography is really unusual and stylish. I just can't get enough of that sense of inescapable doom that film noir has.
Anyone seen Blood on the Moon? It's apparently another western noir starring Mitchum.
-
Out of the Past is absolutely essential if you haven't seen it.
-
Out of the Past is absolutely essential if you haven't seen it.
Yah, and Thunder Road, & Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison and and and and ...
It's also fun when he would pop up in stuff later on in his career - Scrooged, Dead Man, etc.
-
Out of the Past is absolutely essential if you haven't seen it.
That's the one with Kirk Douglas, right? I remember watching that in a class in college - we spent a while hashing out all the flashbacks and flash-forwards. I real1ly should revisit that. Night of the Hunter will have to happen for me next week, too. May might just have to be the Month of Mitchum.
-
Yes, Out of the Past is the flashback-y one with Kirk Douglas. Thunder Road, as has also been mentioned, is great. El Dorado is also a fun western (it's a Rio Bravo remake with Mitchum in the Dean Martin role and a young James Caan in the Rick Nelson role) if you can deal with John Wayne and one scene of absolutely jaw-dropping racism.
I know Mitchum played Phillip Marlowe a couple of times in the 70s but I haven't seen either.
-
Yeah, he did Farewell, My Lovely, which is great, and The Big Sleep, which is pretty bad.
-
Guys, no love for BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE?
-
Watched them both this week and am still awestruck over the blu-rays for VIVRE SA VIE and BIGGER THAN LIFE. Just utterly gorgeous and transformative. Contemporary action films get the display treatment, but impeccably transferred classic films like these truly illustrate what a marvel this format is.
-
The last page prompted me to start catching up w/ various Mitchum movies I've missed. I downloaded Nicholas Ray's rodeo melodrama The Lusty Men (they don't title 'em like they used to), which unforgivably isn't on dvd and has to be in the top tier of both Ray and Mitchum, right behind Night of the Hunter and Out of the Past for me. It's probably the most poetic exploration of his persona I've seen.
Also watched the noir Angel Face, which has a fantastic ending, and a fantastic bit of trivia:
When Robert Mitchum got fed up with repeated re-takes in which the director Otto Preminger ordered him to slap Jean Simmons across the face, he turned around and slapped Preminger, asking whether it was this way he wanted it. Preminger immediately demanded of Howard Hughes for Mitchum to be replaced. Hughes refused.

I haven't seen a Criterion Bluray yet but there have been a few HD instant streams on Netflix from the 50's and 60's that have been just astonishing.
-
A friend of mine had this to say on the subject of BD restoration, particularly in the case of Criterion's release of Paris, Texas:
There are some blu-rays whose video images are noticeably more jaw-dropping than others, what is referred to in some tech circles as reference grade quality.
You can add this one to that list. If you love this movie and haven't seen the Criterion blu-ray, you are missing out. It's like watching a completely different film. Asbolutely no dirt, specks, etc, it's as clean an image as you could possibly imagine, with colors that don't just pop off the screen; they explode. Those stunningly-shot landscape vistas that populate this film are just incredible. I guarantee you, this blu-ray is like no version of Paris, Texas you've ever seen before.
I've only seen samples of it, since Criterion BDs are locked to Region 1. But yeah. Astonishing is the word.
Chris, since I love all things Preminger I love Angel Face too. Great noir.
-
Paris, Texas is on Netflix instant in HD and although I never saw it before to make comparisons, it did look great. I think the best I've seen so far is A Man For All Seasons. The colors and detail were amazing.

I don't like seeing any Melville at all on the list; their intermittent availability thru the years has been exasperating.

Losing the similarly stylized and immensely fun Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (Hands Off the Loot) hurts too. Hate to say it but I think there's at least one more wave of Studio Canal-owned titles that will eventually go out of print, including more Melville (Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge).

The worst part is that they're so slow about doing anything with them. I'm afraid they'll get the rights back and just not do anything with a lot of them.

Urk - this one has been on my to-see list for like years.
-
Touchez pas au grisbi is an amazing film - pitch perfect French noir. Wonderful stuff.
-
Really looking forward to Thin Red Line and Charade on blu.
-
Thin Red Line
Thanks for the heads up. Malick is my favorite. Can't wait for The Tree of Delays Life.
-
Speculation seems to be that October will be all-horror, since Hausu, Antichrist and a Videodrome blu-ray are known to be coming, plus they've been working on Cronos for a while.
I would kill for a Spike commentary on one of those.
"Ah yes, James Woods Trees. He was in another movie I can't recall..."

Cronos, the early del Toro? Pretty terrible IMO.

Swift and to the point. I agree.

All the Mitchum talk earlier in this thread was prescient: Today's newsletter alludes to a Night of the Hunter blu-ray coming soon. :o
-
Makes a lot of sense. Been waiting to see who would release the new print + restored stuff.
-
Another 50% off sale on all Criterions just started at Barnes & Noble.
-
Excited for The Thin Red Line but not excited because I have to buy a new bluray player because my year old one won't play new blurays and the updates don't work. Any recommendations on a good one between about $75-$150 that will last a while and play everything?

Terry and Terry have worked together plenty - Terry just keeps having to cut Terry's scenes out of the movies for myriad reasons. We'll see what happens with the Tree of Life scenes Terry shot with Terry and Brad Pitt.
-
Thanks for going three posts without submitting any advice! The nerve.
Btw a different Terry is shooting Tree of Life 2: Oak and the whole things is being shot in front of a white wall.

I don't get why a year old player wouldn't play everything. One of my players is a 1st gen Insignia that doesn't even have a network connection and it plays everything I've thrown at it. There's a firmware update for it to download and burn to disc but I haven't updated it because everything works. My guess is that's just a faulty player.
Everything you could buy at a big box store will work with everything. I picked up a Philips about a month ago that does Netflix streaming as well. It goes on sale once in awhile at Target to get you under 150. I think I paid 120.

Thanks Gilly I think I'm gunna go for that. I have a roku and I could use a second netflix streamer for the living room. Great thanks!
-
Make sure you update the firmware once you get it plugged in. A new update came out a few weeks ago that probably won't be on the player yet, but before the update Netflix was unusable and now it works great.
-
Coming in October (all on blu-ray as well):
Paths of Glory
House
The Magician (Bergman)
The Darjeeling Limited
Seven Samurai blu
I'll reiterate for anyone who missed the House thread that the director also made those Charles Bronson Mandom commercials in the 70's. That will give you about 1/10 of an idea of the craziness you're in store for with this movie.
-
I have yet to see Hausu, but I have a copy of it and it's about time I get to it.
-
50% off all Criterion titles at Barnes & Nobles, in-store and online till August 1
-
There was a clue in their newsletter today that confirms they're releasing a "New Hollywood" box set of BBS-produced films: Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Last Picture Show, King of Marvin Gardens, Drive He Said and A Safe Place. I don't think any of them will be available individually yet.
Perhaps this news should be posted on all of the Mickey Dolenz threads as well.
-
Criterion added all of their John Cassavetes films to instant watch and all are streaming in HD.
-
Good lookin' out, Gilly.
I am having SUCH a Hausu party this halloween.
-
No one's mentioned The Red Shoes?
It could be their best looking transfer ever (and I only watched the DVD)
-

Ordered the blu-ray as part of the B&N sale. Can't wait to see how it looks.
Netflix is annoyingly lax in stocking new Criterions these days, among other areas where they're declining. Neither this or the Black Narcissus blu-ray are available there yet.

To my untrained eye, both look amazing. Certainly much better than the pretty good earlier releases.

The way Netflix is going it's hard to say when they'll start carrying it. If there's another Barnes & Noble Criterion sale in November like last year, there's a chance the blu-ray version might be available for around a pretty incredible $50 (the dvd version comes out in December, I'm guessing to ease their production costs).
-
Per posts on the Criterion forum, T. Zwigoff has sorta-confirmed that Criterion will release Ghost World. He plans to begin work on supplementary material in the next 6-12 months.
Also heard a rumour that they will add The Swarm to The Collection in 2012.

That would be awesome. Now if only Netflix would hurry up and add Crumb/Louie Bluie.

I will definitely be buying that Bluray box set once B+N has a sale.

Did anybody else think "they're gonna crucify me"?

I'm still stuck on 3 Groschen Oper. I'll never get over it.
-
A whole lot of Criterion titles will be pulled from Instant Netflix next month (http://criterioncast.com/2010/08/23/criterion-expiring-on-netflix-september-22/)
-
That really sucks. Criterion is easily the best thing about Netflix instant. I really hope they don't go with Hulu exclusively; I'm only interested in streaming films on my tv if I can help it.
-
I don't think it's anything to get worried about yet. Almost everything has an expiration date on Netflix Instant and Criterion continues to add more. As for right now Netflix is basically a huge premium channel where the movies they have do go away after awhile, but if you wait a couple months they'll probably be back.
-

My sources have indicated that a Before Sunrise/Before Sunset Criterion set is a go.

50% off sale is back at Barnes & Noble. Picked up the HOUSE blu-ray at lunch.
-
Online order: PLACED.
Maybe just the one order this time. I think I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Criterions I actively want. It's devolving into "Eh, why not?" (IL GENERALE DELLA ROVERE) My wallet can't take no more.
-

I wish the BBS box set was out so I could get that 50 percent off. I guess I'll just wait for the next sale.
-
Thinking about blind-buying that Allan King Eclipse set (cue "Inside the Comedy Mind" reference....), since its Netflix availability is probabaly nowhere in sight. These films sound like perfect holiday fare.
Warrendale
For his enthralling first feature, Allan King brought his cameras to a home for psychologically disturbed young people. The stunning Warrendale won the Prix d’art et d’essai at Cannes and a special documentary award from the National Society of Film Critics.
A Married Couple
Intense and hectic, frightening and funny, A Married Couple is ultimately about the eternal power struggle in romantic relationships, as well as entrenched gender roles on the cusp of change.
Come On Children
In the early 1970s, ten teenagers (five boys and five girls) leave behind parents, school, and all other authority figures to live on a farm for ten weeks. Come On Children is a vivid rendering of one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable—and ultimately directionless—countercultures.
Dying at Grace
An extraordinary, transformative experience, Allan King’s Dying at Grace is quite simply unprecedented: five terminally ill cancer patients allowed the director access to their final months and days inside the Toronto Grace Health Care Center.
Memory for Max, Claire, Ida, and Company
For four months, King follows the daily routines of eight patients suffering from dementia and memory loss; the result is searing, compassionate drama that can bring to the viewer a greater understanding of his or her loved ones.
-

Looks like the 50% off is in effect for some pre-orders, like Modern Times. Maybe just the pre-orders that will be released while the sale is still on?
-
I'm so excited for that "Broadcast News" Criterion. it's almost enough to make me forget how little use my DVDs get these days.

Rumor has it Mickey Dolenz personally signs and delivers each copy because that's the swell kinda guy he is...
On a similar note I have been perfecting my Dolenz "myah" impression. People have almost stopped wondering why I am trying to sound like Edward G. Robinson...
-

Because the actual release date falls after the sale ends.
This box looks so cool I wish I actually liked Easy Rider.

I think exactly the thing that Chris L typed. Granted, I haven't seen Easy Rider in a long time, so maybe I'd feel differently about it now, but I couldn't stand it when I saw it. Two-Lane Blacktop is my Easy Rider.
-
I want to buy that BBS boxset, but only to get Head, Five Easy Pieces, and King of Marvin Gardens. The rest of the films I don't really I have an interest in. If only there were a way to buy the films individually.
And I'll echo what others have said about Easy Rider. I've watched it on several occasions and it's never done anything for me.

Couldn't be more excited for Still Walking and Sweet Smell and it'll be nice to have Double Life on blu.

Yeah, Still Walking is a really fine film. Curious to see Senso. Also, I've still never seen Amarcord.

Not many March titles but I'm looking forward to Yi Yi on blu, along with The Times of Harvey Milk and Topsy-Turvy.

Dare I hope that this is a FIRE WALK WITH ME clue? They wouldn't toy with me so cruelly, would they?
-
They wouldn't release that without the TV series, would they?
-
They wouldn't release that without the TV series, would they?
I don't see why not. I'm sure they would release most of Lynch's films if the opportunity arose, and FWWM stands as more than just an addendum to the series by this point.
-
Lynch supposedly filmed enough footage for FWWM to make a movie twice as long as the one that was released, and fans have long been clamoring for a full-scale DVD release featuring the outtakes. If this is it, woo-hoo! I'd buy it. That photo seems more related to the TV series than to the released movie, though. Were there cut scenes set in the Twin Peaks police station? I dunno.
-
A couple hours later, I'm 95% resigned to this being a dumb pic of donuts, one of which happens to look like their logo. It doesn't seem plausible that they'd release the series (I know I'm not buying it again), and even FWWM seems unlikely. But, oooh that other 5%.... I still want those deleted scenes.
-
Those doughnuts look too anarchic to be from Twin Peaks
-
Criterion has released TV series before, if those Bergman miniseries' count.

I saw this today but I had no idea it was every single Criterion. Wow.
-
It's not every single one. I think there's about 150 now, but more are coming (http://blog.hulu.com/2011/02/15/a-gift-for-movie-lovers-criterion-collection-joins-hulu-plus/), including stuff that isn't going to be released on disc. That FAQ mentions they'll all be taken off Netflix by the end of the year (wonder if that includes all IFC films too).
-
But it is going to be every Criterion very soon. For $7.99 I might just get rid of my DVR and save 7 bucks by getting Hulu Plus. Seems like almost everything I watch is on there. If I didn't get cable for free it would be a no brainer.

I'd be really surprised if this deal included, say, MGM-licensed stuff like Sweet Smell of Success or Night of the Hunter. Nevertheless, it's allegedly going to climb to 800 or so films. I think they're up to 560-some dvd spine numbers by now, so that's a lot of previously unavailable stuff. I'm probably not joining anytime soon but I'll be interested to see how it shapes up.

I didn't see the stuff about being taken off Netflix. Blast and damn.
It's just the stuff on Instant. You'll still be able to get the discs from Netflix.

Except for the fact that they haven't upgraded any previously released films to the new Criterion versions in months.

Interesting tidbits from a post by "Harmonov" on the Criterion forum. He talked to Jonathan Sehring , IFC President of Entertainment, at a screening of Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
- Confirmed Criterion will be releasing Pina, a three dimensional dance documentary by the human boy named "Wim Wenders"
- He hopes that they will be releasing Cave of Forgotten Dreams, but Criterion's Peter Becker has "balked at it."
- Certified Copy will not be released by Criterion...at least at this time. Becker considers it "minor Kiarostami."
I find it hard to believe that Becker would say that.
- Errol Morris's Gates of Heaven, Vernon, Florida, and The Thin Blue Line are confirmed. Tabloid is a possibility.
- Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture (obviously this will cause a stir among the Criterion nerds; I welcome it)
- Chris Nolan's Following and Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in the Life Of... are still in the works.
-
I agree w/ Omar that the Kiarostami quote sounds highly unlikely, and not just because I loved Certified Copy.
-
I hope some of their recent additions to Hulu make it to disc sooner rather than later:
Mizoguchi's The 47 Ronin
Oshima's Cruel Story of Youth
Bresson's L'Argent
Resnick's Cabin Boy
I think that last one may have been in the regular movie secition, actually.

For those who are interested but haven't wanted to spend the money, Amazon has the blu ray version of the Criterion BBS box set America Lost and Found on sale for $67. I think the price is only good through the end of today, so grab it now if you're interested.

That's the one I can't wrap my head around. I mean that would be one of the funniest choices in the whole Criterion Collection as a joke, but that someone (assuming it's real) actually did it...

Maybe they have Paul Simon on the other side.

I recently watched all 4 films in their "Rafaello Matarazzo's Runaway Melodramas" Eclipse set on Hulu. I'm generally not keen on melodrama, but in this case "runaway" means deleriously over the top. These movies were apparently the biggest Italian hits of their day and it's easy to see why. They grab you almost right away and don't let up as they shamelessly put their hero and heroine through the wringer (the same two leads star in each film). They actually get progressively wilder, so by the final film - THE WHITE ANGEL, a sequel to the 3rd film in the set, NOBODY'S CHILDREN - it seems like there's a crazy plot twist in every other scene. Fans of camp (VERY Italian-style) will appreciate these but there's also some high-level skill and commitment at work.
A couple other recent releases:
BLACK MOON - a bizarre, experimental, Lewis Carroll-influenced film Louis Malle film well-suited for very early morning insomniac viewing. Really amazingly photographed by the great Sven Nykvist. Features a talking unicorn and a mute Joe Dallesandro.
THE MAKIOKA SISTERS - They can't all be winners. I saw this in the theater a few years ago and it was so boring I nearly walked out. Very 80s and very glossy. Was I wrong?

I picked this up from the sale. I didn't know anything about it, but the descriptions and trailers sparked my interest. I'm looking forward to watching it soon, I'm not sure what to expect.

Queens Boulevard (Billy Walsh, 2005?) is confirmed for November 2011 per @scharpling.
Besides that one, Nov releases are: the Three Colors Trilogy; 12 Angry Men; upgrades of Rushmore, Rules of the Game, Fanny & Alexander; & Eclipse Series: Sabu (good to see the works of Paul Heyman finally represented).
Also, the artwork for the Three Colors Trilogy is unbelievably atrocious. Take this, for example.

I got no beef with that either.
-
I don't like it at all. The only thing it suggests to me about the movie is the way I originally watched it: projected against a wall in a dour campus screening room.
The art for the other Nov titles is pretty good though. A lot of people will hate the new Rules of the Game cover but it may get new viewers to see the film in a different light.
-
That's a messed-up kite.

Finally a Rushmore Bluray release. I was beginning to think Criterion didn't have the rights to it anymore and now I'm kind of surprised it took them so long.

Thanks, Omar. I just got the blu-ray from Amazon today. I'm almost finished watching the movie again.
The package is indeed, fantastic. Also included is a prior film of Kubrick.
However, my opinion of the movie remains the same: solid noir but wouldn't really be remembered if it wasn't directed by Kubrick.

Been looking into adding Hulu plus just for the films that are unavailable on Netflix and was unaware that you can watch a lot of them for free, so yay Criterion.
-
It's amusing that the most popular films on Criterion's Hulu channel are always the ones w/ the most softcore elements. The porn always rises to the top.
Here's one young cineaste's review of IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES:
its hard to watch this without masturbating. I can't review how the movie really is artistically If I'm getting hard all the time. I find myself skipping through everything until I hit one of the sex scenes. I guess that's the problem with putting too much sex in one movie - it backfires. I understand that the movie director was trying to show how addicted this girl was to sex but they could have shown that a different way. If you are 40 or older I would recommend this movie to you because from the little story I've seen before they interlope it looks pretty interesting and promising. And only people that old can get through the movie without getting a hard-on and actually appreciate the director's message. So I'll give this movie the benefit of the doubt and give it a 4 out of 5.
They haven't added anything new to the channel in a few months now so I hope they don't consider it a bust.
-

I'm assuming you're only referring to the Criterion movies? Because if there are worthwhile movies on hulu plus that aren't on netflix, aside from the Criterions, please advise!

They also released their annual New Year's drawing of hints for 2012 releases today. Harold & Maude, Rosemary's Baby, Godard's Weekend, Being John Malkovich, Y Tu Mama Tambien (again), Eating Raoul, Summer W/ Monika, Quadrophenia, Samurai Trilogy upgrade all look definite.

It will probably come out sometime this year. I think the main issue at this point is Fincher having enough time to supervise the transfer and participate in various supplements.

There are threading very close to their Armageddon debacle with some of these releases i would rather them dig deeper and find something nobody's heard than try to reevaluate recent films.

Eh. Criterion still seems to do their fair share of "film excavation." Case in point, Alambrista!, that Hollis Frampton set, the aforementioned Letter Never Sent, I mean those aren't exactly widely known films (except amongst cineastes, perhaps). Films like Armageddon, Chasing Amy, The Game, any Wes Anderson film, etc. may not meet the standards of film cognoscenti, but it's those discs that enable Criterion to release the more obscure gems that you would like to see.

I've started to collect these. I'm buying one a week. I'm trying to do it in a semi-organized way, going director by director. I've been getting Seijun Suzuki's stuff these past few weeks. I like the ones featuriing Joe Shishido (sp?) the best. He drops a layer of weirdness over the yakuza thing. Very cool.

There several other Seijun Suzuki flicks from around the same era that were released on DVD by Homevision Entertainment. They're out-of-print but definitely worth picking up if you come across a copy.
Barnes & Noble usually has a 50% off Criterion sale around Easter. Amazon routinely has 40% off specials on many titles. I've been working on getting all the blu ray titles. I have a Google Docs spreadsheet I made to keep track of my collection. It also has the upcoming release titles with their release date. I'll gladly share a link to it if anyone is interested.

I heard the Criterion was upset that Netflix wouldn't create a Criterion Collection search tag. Hulu did so Criterion got on board with them for streaming.
There's a site called MUBI (http://www.mubi.com) that focuses primarily on foreign and independent films as well as films by seminal directors. Their "Watch Instantly" section includes titles streaming on Netflix; titles streamable on MUBI are $2.99 each or unlimited for $6.99 per month.
There's another site called InstantWatcher (http://www.instantwatcher.com) that's great for searching streaming Netflix titles. You can see a list of recent additions or search by genre, New York Times critics picks or Rotten Tomatoes ratings. One of the things I like about it is that it shows the date the title is streaming until.
[I know that MUBI and InstantWatcher have been discussed previously in this and other threads; I mention them for those who may have missed prior mentions]

I was pleasantly surprised to see their ISLAND OF LOST SOULS blu-ray includes an interview w/ Mark Mothersbaugh & Gerald Casale from Devo, as well as their short film "The Truth About De-volution" (LOST SOULS is the source of their "Are We Not Men?" catch phrase). There's also an interview w/ Richard Stanley, the original director of the 1996 ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, who was fired by the studio after four days of production, then snuck back onto the set as a heavily made-up extra to view the ensuing disastrous shoot for himself.

Strapped for cash, these last few weeks, but trying not to lose momentum. Picked up Rushmore and Silence of the Lambs. Both used. Will get the remaining Suzuki movies, Story of a Prostitute and Gates of Flesh, in the next few go-rounds.

I suffered through this with every episode of Monk - and I watched them all.
I came to greatly appreciate Ted Levine as an actor and Stottlemeyer as a character, but I never entirely got past hearing a muffled "I eff me so hard" each time he first appeared on the screen.
-
I hand't seen SOTL in so long I didn't make the connection 'till season 3 and I finally IMDB'd him....I knew I knew that voice!
My favorite Ted Levine moment (so far -I'm on season 6) of Monk is when he's trying to get the chimp to shoot him....comedy gold.

Holy crap, I watched the entire series and never made the connection.

I tried to talk about Criterion on the Hatch Patch, but flamed out. That is all.
I heard that and appreciated it. My only complaint is that the Criterion is still being slammed for having Armageddon and The Rock in their catalog. It was strictly a money making move that likely kept the whole place afloat. I'm willing to suffer through two spine titles that are currently OOP so that the whole shebang can keep on going.
-
The Rock is cinema at its finest, more so shelved right next to the Criterion copy of Robocop.
(I still see Chasing Amy Criterion Laserdiscs floating around record sales, usually sandwiched between two copies of Mimic.)

Some people take the idea of the collection as a definitive canon in and of itself too seriously. The release of the Bay films (as far as I know, he specifically sought them out) isn't so strange relative to some of the stuff they released in their laserdisc days.

I agree that Criterion as a holy canon of movies is absurd mostly because taste is so subjective. My love for Criterion comes from their dedication to providing a quality product: the transfers are crystal clear, the sound is amazing, the special features are edifying and not mere P.R., and the physical package this all comes in is detailed and gorgeous. (My recent favorite art is Sean Phillips' cover for 12 Angry Men. If you like that, check out his work with Ed Brubaker in some of the best crime comics ever.)
While a great movie is a great movie whether on bare bones DVD or Criterion blu-ray, I really prize a set more when I know that the people putting it together appreciate the art involved as much as I do.

Maybe it's not holy canon, but it's definitely a one stop shop for anyone trying to dive into what critics and film historians have labeled as canon. The mastering, the covers and the extras are just icing on the cake.

Jeez. You must have dropped $120+ on those.
-
I'm also interested in I Compagni. The other Monicelli/Mastroianni collabo I've seen (Casanova 70) was surprisingly good.

Yeah, including the 2 more I got, it was like $200...still half off tho'! I grew up when buying a beta tape of a movie was $99 My cousin had Black Stallion, Up in Smoke and one or two others and we'd watch them all the time....the idea that you can own movies so cheap now days is still amazing to me - which is why my apt looks like a video store I guess. Much to the wife's dismay.

I watched House this evening. One of those rarities where there is very little room for indifference. I vacillated between thinking it was the best thing I've ever seen and the worst thing I've ever seen. I think I liked it...

This is the first time I've made it available to anyone. So that I don't come off as some kind of elitist prick [HA!] I'll get to work on a tab with the DVD releases. And then I'll work on a tab with the laserdisc releases for those of you who [like myself] enjoy dabbling in technology of the past.
All suggestions/criticisms/whatevers are welcome. :D
Have you made an updated version of this? It's great.
