Title: Hey New People - Any Questions?
Post by: Tom Scharpling on August 26, 2008, 02:26:57 PM
Let the more experienced FOTs guide you through the process of getting settled!

You ask the questions and they answer them.

And remember there are no stupid questions!*

Tom.

*There are a few stupid questions.

*There are a few stupid questions.

Such as: who is buried in Grant's Tomb?  Now that would be a stupid question.

New FOTs can ask any question, and should receive a "honeymoon" period in which stupid questions can be asked without penalty. When the honeymoon's over, all bets are off.

I'll go first with a multi-part question.

In an interview with Tom I read online (it was conducted in 2003), he talks a bit about a guy named Andrew Earles and his contributions to the show. It sounds like this guy's role was something like Jon Wurster's, but in Andrew's case the characters were a little more blended in with the real callers. Looking at the more recent press I get the impression he's no longer involved, and I haven't reached back as beyond 2005 in the archives yet so I'm not sure what he really sounded like. But in recent shows I've never noticed any non-Wurster calls that truly seemed put on (except by the typical attention-seeking James types). My questions: What happened to Andrew? Where should I go first to hear some good examples of his stuff? Is JW now the only caller of his kind? If not, any tips on spotting the other 'fakes'?

Start with Earles's failedpilot.com blog. He writes about some of his Best Show calls there.

You can also check out the Earles & Jensen 2CD prank phone call compilation on Matador to hear some more Andrew Earles. If you're looking for Best Show calls featuring Mr. Earles, look in the archives for shows containing calls by Kevin, The Party Doctor, and Skag Winesack.

Jon Benjamin is the other major caller of this type, but he hasn't called for a very long time either.

Earle's best character in my opinion was either the Party Doctor or Skag Winesack. If you scan the archives you can find references to them. His voice is pretty recognizeable. A small cadre of other comedians has also contributed to the show over the years.

I believe Earle's last appearance was on Sept. 19, 2006, as Tom's neighbor and High Priest of the Church of Satan, Keith Kincaid. Bryce's call the next week with details on the COS's Fun Faire is indispensable. Dennis Lindsey, Tom's other neighbor, who called and gave Tom a hard time about his Halloween setup.  You can hear him on the October 24, 2006 show.

 - - - - - -

Jon Benjamin did a lot of interviews as various characters early on. My personal favs are April 3 and 10, 2001, as Tonight Show producer Brad Lester (a great slow burn that really really pays off at the end) and Feb. 13, 2001, as Ron Garver, author of Upright Positions: Flying the Erotic Skies (which is hilarious throughout). May 21, 2002, to me, is classic Best Show, with Tom playing it totally straight while Horatio Sanz and Jon Benjamin frustrate Matt Walsh.

Check out this interview (http://astradio.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=231533) with S&W on AST Radio by isos and our own Jouster, which addresses the "What happened to Andrew?" portion of your question.

Earles and Benjamin don't call anymore.  Kevin was my favorite, and was actually the first "Is this real?" experience I had with the show.  H. Jon Benjamin's Smirnoff Ice District Manager is one of my favorite calls EVER.

Absolutely - the guy who didn't wear a shirt to the office and just lunged at him to like he was going to hit him was so great.

Tanner Wildgrass, the real life inspiration for Patrick Swayzes' character in Roadhouse was my fav.

In fact as great as the Gorch and Wildgrass are, maybe there's a whole untapped group of individuals out there who are the inspiration behind popular movie characters!

I think all Matt's characters were done with Jon Benjamin - Yankees fan, Rick Benson's father, Liquid Brooklyn, etc.

And the list is not complete without a mention of Sam Seder.

Ugghh, Liquid Brooklyn sounds so familiar! Anyone want to refresh my memory? I think that I heard the call when there was no new BS episode and an old one was put up for the podcast. I think this happened when Tom was ill for a few weeks in March of '07. That means I have it on CD somewhere. Anyone know the orginal airdate?

Yeah, Benjamin kills it. I will never figure out why he hasn't starred in a movie about a loose cannon cop. After seeing him play the Bruce Willis impersonator on Human Giant, I think he'd be great in a comedic role like that.

There isn't really a specific reference to Smails - he's continually referenced/quoted. If you check out the first movie quotes show, I believe he lists some of his favorite Smails quotes, but that's certainly not the only mention.

On that note, what's the deal with the Mickey Dolenz beef?

from Omar's recap (http://www.recidivism.org/2006/05/porcupine_pie.html) of the March 25, 2006 episode:
A caller switches the topic (starts at 2:21) to The Monkees, having recently read The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story of the 60s TV Pop Sensation. He thought Mickey Dolenz came off as cool in the book, but recalled a sour run-in that Tom had with him. Tom recounted the incident, which occured at a prestigious, star-studded event.

Tom spotted Dolenz standing by myself, so he approached him to tell him that he was a huge fan of
Head. Dolenz blew him off, responding with "Yeah, a lot of people say that", and turning away. The caller mentions that the book reveals the band members to be sour and bitter, citing Peter Tork as the most insufferable. Tom disputes that, opting for Davy Jones, and GOMPs the caller for bersmirching Tork and pushing him under the bus. Tom speculates that Dolenz's dismissal of The Kid led to the demise of morning show on WCBS-FM, and calls for Dolenz to apologize to The Best Show to reverse the kaybash put on him.

Also, if it's okay to discuss, does anyone have thoughts on converting archived shows to mp3s for later listening?  The Super program no longer works for me . . .

Also, if it's okay to discuss, does anyone have thoughts on converting archived shows to mp3s for later listening?  The Super program no longer works for me . . .

i use audiohijack to make mp3s of archived shows for consumption on planes and the like. it's super easy.

Got a suggestion for a similar PC-based software?

rawavrecorder.  (You have to have real audio on your computer for it work)

http://rawavrecorder.homestead.com/

I've used it for years.  The only problem is certain corrupted files in the archive that hickup and need you to create a little RAM file to skip pass the corrupted part.

I have a question.

Why does Tom hate Tom Waits so much?

Is that true?  I've never heard Tom say anything about Tom, but I'm a fairly new listener.

My first experience with the best show came from hearing about it from the web-site "corporate-casual.com"

If go to this post* you will see a thing to download the episode where Tom goes Ape on all these people that request Tom Waits songs.  Such a good episode.

* http://www.corporate-casual.com/2007/07/19/best-of-the-best-show/

There is a link to an mp3 at the bottom of the post.  I don't know message board computer language well enough to post a link with confidence.

Keep in mind that the clip in the theme song is pretty much the entire call since Tom busts him on it pretty much immediately. The call is about 1 hr and 3 minutes into the show.

I heard Tom say not too long ago that the show used to be mostly music and has evolved.  What was the general scope of how the show evolved?  I realize I could just listen to every episode, but I'm curious about the broad outline.   Did the show become more ocnversational as regulars began calling in, or did the show's becoming more conversational allow/inspire regular callers?  Have the fake calls been coming since the beginning?

Tom was exaggerating, or at least stretching the timeline, when he said that, I think.  Tom did a music show on WFMU pre-Best Show, and the early Best Shows had a lot more music, but the call-ins were basically along the same lines.  Tom definitely got better as the years passed, but the early shows aren't so different than now - a little less topic-driven, maybe.
Title: Re: Hey New People - Any Questions?
Post by: Alvaro from GM on April 09, 2009, 03:06:30 AM
He only introduced the topics towards the end of 2004.  Before that it was almost always open phone Tuesdays.  The callers started out not respecting him at all and around 2005 I think he started getting more of a handle on things.  I haven't heard the 2006 and 2007 years yet though, so your guess is as good as mine in that.  I am still in the era where Spike calls in pranking Tom, and has only once called in for the topic (worst song = "J-Ho - Jenny from the Block").

If anything pre-topic it was more conversational, he seems to keep tighter reigns on the callers and @APMike probably helps a great deal.

The first episode has two conspicuously famous sounding sports fans and I believe that there were even one or two fake calls on the original all music show that Tom did, unless I'm mistaken and Rot, Rock, and Rule wasn't from that show.

Never mind I got my answer on Amazon:      Monkees (Johnny) (Staten Island NY USA) -

Very good try from Mickey,Davy & Peter. This CD came out in 1987 after there 1986 reunion tour. Good songs,Plus good vocals. Mickey and Davy did not play on it. Peter did played on one song. So if you are looking to buy this one, you won't go wrong. Enjoy it. I own five of this copy.

I'll go back and get it tomorrow.

I have a question about certain reply responses on the board.  Sometimes people will just reply something but not add anything to say.  I'm not sure if they're just bumping the thread or whether it means they agree or something else entirely.  I'm just wondering what the meaning behind that is.

Media squat.

Robert Franklin, the show's producer, said that the programs generated large numbers of letters from desperately ill people, many of whom seemed to think that Fredericks was a medical doctor. (This is not surprising because generally he was introduced as "Dr. Fredericks.")

Media Squat is on right now Dave-O.

It inspired me to find the quote above.

Thanks for giving me a good place to use it.

To poster on Dave's head.

When I first got here I found the quote thing weird too.  I believe your theory is correct.

That, and sometimes people manipulate the quotes.

I advise reading carefully.

Sincerely,

Dr. Fredericks

I have a question about certain reply responses on the board.  Sometimes people will just reply something but not add anything to say.  I'm not sure if they're just bumping the thread or whether it means they agree or something else entirely.  I'm just wondering what the meaning behind that is.

Wes, do you want to handle this one?

So, if there is no protocol to changing user names, I'm just going to change mine.  I'm not in VA anymore and don't plan on going back to live so, I will no longer be NicolefromVA any more.  I'll just be JustNicole so that my location won't tie me down.  Hope it's cool.

You can't play the stream at all? Or you can't download it onto your computer? As far as I know, there's no easy 1-click solution to downloading streaming audio. They don't want you to download it.

Allow me to explain more. All audio files before pop up player via September 30, 208 are all real audio. Im not trying to down load, im just trying to listen but I can seem to find the right player to play them. Ive been to the help page and Ive down loaded Real audio and real 10 but neither seem to work. Thwy just wont load them, no error is shown or anything,  they just wont load.

As I said before any help would be appreciated

This is going to sound stupid, but have you tried uninstalling Real Audio (both versions if they're both still on your computer) and then reinstalling? Real Audio is pretty fussy. I had it just simply stop working at one point - nothing happened when I dl-ed a file, just like what you seem to be getting. I removed the real audio player, re-downloaded & installed and it worked fine. btw, this was their troubleshoot when I went to the real audio site too.

Hey folks, I hope this is the right place for this noob question:

I've been pouring through the archives (not chronologically), and I am lost as to the real identity of Skag Winesack/Freedom Hawk DJ and others like them  (if you tell me it's Wurster that would blow my mind!). Also, did Skag and his ilk stop calling in sometime during the last 2 or 3 years?

thanks,
Shane

EDIT: NEVERMIND....I coulda also read the first few posts of this thread (or deleted this one).

I do recall a Wurster call where he was talking about a detective show with a character named 'Munch'.

I was actually thinking about that bit recently--doesn't anyone remember the show it appeared on?

also, I didn't see this answered elsewhere: I am under the impression the reason Tom can't discuss Monk or S&W CDs has to do with conflict of interest laws--like you can't promote your own products on your own radio show.

Thanks guys.

Those are limited edition CDs that are available only by pledging money to Tom's show during WFMU's pledge-drive. It looks like you might still be able to get the 2010 MP3 CD by pledging here: https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php

Not sure about the Speed of Sound CD. That was from the previous marathon.

Is there a reason The Best Show is not on iTunes anymore?  The last update I received is from November and if I search the show, nothing comes up.  Probably a well trod topic, but a search didn't turn anything up.

Thanks

This is interesting. I'm able to find the Best Show on WFMU and Best Show Gems with the search string "best show on WFMU".

If you aren't subscribed, you may have to download each show individually. My suggestion: access the iTunes store, click on the "Podcasts" tab, and try to search again.

Alternatively, have you tried using the iTunes link at http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BS (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BS)?

You know, there are several podcasts listed at the WFMU podcasts page that I can never get to come up in the iTunes podcast search. For instance, I can never find the WFMU Nardwuar podcast link (which is OK, because I get it through CITR, and I think I have done it for about as long as I can stand anyway.) I wonder if its machine specific. Let me try from here and get back to you.

Hey guys

Really sorry to breath life into an old topic that I am sure regulars are sick of but I am interested in advice from someone who is more computer savvy than I.
I have tried all advice that I could find on downloading early episodes of the show using the streaming capture wizard on VLC, however, I cannot seem to get the stream past the 2:38 mark without it stopping for no apparent reason.
If anyone has worked out a method of capturing old episodes of the show that I NEED to get me through an incredibly tedious job, I would much appreciate your assistance.

My estimation: LDP is a well developed character (my favorite part is his email address name was Lawrence D. Pervison) and Spike is as real as real gets.

The third caller annoys Matt by continuously praising Ian Roberts. Does anyone know if that was Jon Glaser playing the third caller?
