Ugh, don't get me started on hipster Stockholm. (Great city in the summertime though. Beautiful.)

That guy in the top pic looks like a typical creep.

And this:

In fact, packed venues were the standard throughout my stay, as at Debaser Medis the next night. (There are actually two Debaser addresses in Stockholm, with a third branch in the town of Malmö.)

That's where you need to go - not Stockholm.

See, you got me started!

I agree, and when my wife and I were there last Summer we managed to avoid anything anoying.  The places we went and people we met were pleasant as could be.  Of course we pretty much did tourist stuff, didn't go to any rock shows or attempt to uncover the real arts scene or anything that would have put us in the path of pretty rock youngsters.  I was disappointed with Skansen.  Half the stuff was closed and the stuff that was open was just kind of weird (except for Swedenborg's Summer hut).

Too bad about Skansen being closed, jed - it's a nice place when it's open. Sounds like you had a nice time.

Fido, I'm from the aforementioned Malmö. Or at least I've been living her for the last 12 years. It's just by Copenhagen in southern Sweden.

You know what's worse than having a cheesy song stuck in your head?
When that song is in a language you don't even speak.

Thanks a bunch, TL. Geez.

Alright, TL!

Though I think you have some explaining to do... did you just YouTube'd Malmö FF or what?

(You should come and play here sometime, you know - lots of great venues here. Just come on over.)

Been there many times!  We've played both Debasers and Pink Flag in Malmö.
Also, my sister lives there, so...

Really? You learn something new every day! Well, you're welcome back any time.

EDIT: Pink Flag is no more, by the way. At least I don't think so. (Is my severe lack o' rock savvy showing yet?)

No, you're correct - it is, alas, no longer, but I know they still do shows in that space near the Folksparket or whatever it's called.

Oh yeah, that's the Malmö branch of Debaser. Within like two three blocks there are a number of buzzing venues - Debaser, Inkonst, KB, Jeriko. I live right there.

I really like the band [ingenting] who sing only in Swedish. Crimestick, how'd you feel about them? Or Vapnet, who were just recommended to me.

Rule of thumb: if they play guitars, I probably have no clue. :)

That said, I hear good things about Vapnet.

I like Wolf Brigade, Totalitar, DS13, ETA, Bruce Banner, The Regulations in a punk rock vein.
Oh and The Members of Tinnitus in an insane arty weirdos way.

A'ight Crimestick, come clean, though - you secretly love Håken Hellström, right?
(No shame in that game, by the way - why fight it?  Things are so HAPPY with universal healthcare, paternity leave,  and boyfriend/girlfriend visas!)

I know about Malmö and hear plenty of good things about it though I have still never been to Sweden.  However I am a proud Swedish-American, and have relatives in Öland.  One of these years I will travel around Sweden.  I can't wait to see my ancestral homeland!!

I actually really do love Malmö, but not all of Sweden feels the same.  The whole Skåne province was under Danish rule for so long, that it's still given the fish eye by the northerners.  My sister and I were in a bar in Stockholm talking to the bartender about New York and New Jersey, and I said, "Yeah, but she lives in Sweden now."  He said, "Ja?  Where do you live?"  She said, "Malmö," and he paused, started drying a glass, and said, "That's not Sweden."
I think he was just a jerk, but it wasn't the first or last time I've heard that sentiment...

That's true, TL - there's always some separatists talk down here. It's mostly tongue-in-cheek, and it's for sure not at all on the same playing field as the Flemish or the Catalan separatists, but some people can be jerks about it, as your story suggests. From our perspective, Skåne as a whole and Malmö in particular is much more continental and more like mainland Europe than the rest of Sweden, which drives the northerners nuts. Since they're convinced Stockholm is the center of the universe, they don't know what to do with themselves when another part of the country turn out to be way cooler. But it explains why so many bands, artists and other young creative people are moving here. The Malmö-Copenhagen region is one of the most expansive in Europe. The fact is that Sweden would probably fare terribly without Skåne's wealth.

Anyway, boring boring... regional politics.

I don't mind Håkan Hellström, but I don't listen to him. He's very charming and his energy is infectious, but I don't care much for the music. There's a great divide here between people who love him unconditionally, and people who think he should "learn how to sing".

Fido, Öland is beautiful, you'd like it. Very popular in the summer. Stora Alvaret (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stora_Alvaret), or The Great Alvar, is quite spectacular.
