It's totally correct! It's what "hello" is in Irish, but literally means "God be with you." And then, in response, you say "God, and Mary, be with you." If it goes on any longer, Saints Patrick and Brigid get brought into the mix.

And that is your Irish language lesson for the day. If you like, I can give you directions to the local tourist office, discuss the weather, or tell you the time. All part of the service.
