ATTENTION ALL FRIENDS OF TOM.
We're getting closer. Twenty hours away from the first marathon show. And I seriously need your help.
If you're a fan of the show, NOW IS THE TIME TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.
We need to make this our most successful marathon yet. And we can.
For starters I NEED YOU TO PLEDGE DURING THE SHOW. You know when it's on! Every pledge counts. I want the big ones and the small ones. The white whales and the guppies. Every dollar helps keep WFMU on the air for another year!
I'll be talking plenty about the pledge increments during the show, but $75 or more gets you the WE DID IT AGAIN! FUN PACK, which consists of an awesome t-shirt which is being designed as we speak, an amazing sticker designed by none other than Kick The Bobo, which I will reveal tomorrow, and an amazing full color printed 16"x24" version of the poster that Brian Weaver designed! It's the best marathon premium we've done to date, and you're going to LOVE IT. I promise!
The phone number is 800-989-9368, and online pledges can be made at www.wfmu.org . But again, PLEDGE DURING THE SHOW. We need to show everybody the might of The Best Show!
The other way you can help out? SPREAD THE WORD.
Tell everybody about WFMU and The Best Show On WFMU. Post it on FOT-friendly message boards! Send out MySpace bulletins telling people to pledge during the show! Put it in your Facebook status! I will get links for pledge boxes that you can put on your MySpace/Facebook pages early tomorrow. Let's do this, everybody. Let's knock this one so far out of the park! I'm gonna give tomorrow night's show everything I've got, and I hope you will do the same.
We're in this together. Fifty weeks of fun, two weeks of fundraising. Let's keep WFMU on the air for another year. WE CAN DO THIS.
Tom.
-
i posted the banner on my blorg. NOW people will pay attention! :)
-
We're in this together. Fifty weeks of fun, two weeks of fundraising.
Shouldn't that be "Fifty-two weeks of fun, two of which are also dedicated to fundraising"? 'Cause last time I listened to one of the fundraising shows it was a big rock-out hullaballoo of dynamo power. I doubt this will be tote bag type radio.
-
I'm going to be a guppy but I'll pledge.
-
Fundraising? More like fun-raising, am I right people?!
-

Tom says "We don't deal in puns here." But I gotta say, that gave me a chuckle, MJC.
Count me in for a pledge tonight, Tom.
-
I am apologizing in advance for the size of my contribution (damn public education career), but I will pledge. IT'S TIME TO GIVE BACK, PEOPLE.
-
I'm saving up for a condo I've got my eye on in Newbridge. Maybe next year when Hot Rocking Ronnie returns.
-
ATTENTION ALL FRIENDS OF TOM.
WE CAN DO THIS.
YES, WE CAN!
-
I'm blowing my 1st post (yay?) here to promise a pledge tonight from my broke, funnybook drawin' ass for the Fun Pack™ - it will be mine!
-
I'll pledge next week, probably during the third hour. Don't know why I feel compelled to wait, but there you have it.
-
Looks like I'm going to have to donate a second time. Probably $50 this time to get the WFMU t shirt.
-
Get ready to meet my little pledge!
-
There Will Be Empty Wallets!
-
I can't listen to the show, but I'm still pledging tonight!
-
Get ready.

I can't listen to the show, but I'm still pledging tonight!
What one man can do, another can do!
(I'm pledging as well.)
-
Sadly, I can't listen live (haven't listened live in almost a year)...thank goodness for the podcast. That's not stopping me from donating. In fact, I just did!
Go get 'em WFMU!!!
-

Nooooooo! During Best Show is when pledges are best!
-
I just got home and didn't turn the show on (I'm anal-retentive that way - I'd rather listen to the whole podcast than just the last half-hour of the live show) but I went online and pledged. So I could pledge during the show - rock on! Samir, how did you get the banner code? I'll post it on my blog too. Gets about 200 hits a day, mostly from broke theater nerds, but you never know. Book/Daddy might be lurking out there, not yet knowing that he desires WFMU swag.
-
For the duration of the marathon I'm changing my name to Eban.
-

I asked Doddy this morning, and he agreed to give $250. :'(
I'll pledge the money next Tuesday. I'll see if I can squeeze more out of him as the week progresses.
-
Way to go Laurie!
-
Last night I gave more than I planned on (no heart donor love from Hatch, thank you), then called back and upped my pledge. But I could have sworn that I won something in the closing minutes. I'm looking forward to relistening and finding out what it was. :D

I think it was the big huge comedy pack of stuff (including CDs from Patton Oswalt and Paul F Tompkins).

Forrest won the Demon's Claws CD.
-
Sweet.
-
last night was amazing!
it was like listening to a world series-winning homerun when they broke 40 g's! way to everyone!
-
Does anyone know how much the soaking of Andy Breckman was?
-
If every show on WFMU raised 40k in a 3 hour period, the station would make almost 4.5 million in two weeks. In United States of American money, which is worth *slightly* more than Australian money.
The Best Show isn't just a tentpole show. It's like a mighty sequoia with a dirty t-shirt stuck in its branches. The shirt is the rest of the shows. The Best Show is to the station what Ohio and Texas are to Hillary. WFMU, however noble its intentions, without the Best Show is like the League of Nations was without the United States. The money that the Société Générale guy was playing with is petty cash to the Best Show.
-
Does anyone know how much the soaking of Andy Breckman was?
I looked at the SSD playlist and it was speculated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 7K. And that's before he threw in the extra $1000 so that Ken would be the one to get tasered.
There were some questions in the chat Tuesday night...is 40K a single-show record for FMU? I understand why they don't publicize how much each show pulls in, but I am a bit curious. I only listen to a few shows on FMU so I don't know what shows are most popular (and therefore most likely to pull the biggest pledges).
-
Probably Best Show, Glen Jones, then SSD, I am thinking

Yeah, in the chat I was wondering if there's any show that's like known for bringing in the big bucks - maybe one with lots of celebrity/rich people supporters, that kind of thing. The Best Show has everything it takes to be a frontrunner, but I was thinking that maybe there's some show that's been around for ages, with a lot of rock star fans or whatever.
(I think it's time for a certain Mr. C O'Brien to put his money where his mouth is - if he's such a fan of S&W he should poney up at least a couple of Y3K's...)
-
they always talk about how much JM in the AM brings in, too.
-
As I said in the chat, I'm pretty sure JM in the AM brings in the most, then Glen Jones, then Tom. SSD doesn't bring in as much as it used to, and it's handicapped by being only an hour.
I wish I could have given $1000 to SSD last night. I would have had Andy use my mother's name in an episode of Monk. She's a big fan (just the age group for it).
-
Tasered?!?!
-
Forty-five volts.
-
Tasered?!?!
yep

that's a great idea zzesp. way to go above and beyond!
One of these tuesday nights, you should do a remote with Tom riding shotgun in your cab. that'd be some great radio.
-
Awesome, zzesp. Do you have any good stories of fares being mystified by or cracking up at Best Show zaniness?
-
Are you the cab driver who has called the show?

GOOD NEWS: Doddy has agreed to donate $400 in lieu of giving me a gift certificate to Amazon or something. From $250 to $400 in 24 hours! Wow! I'll see if I can squeeze another $100 out of him.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Get ready people! I will be putting my personal copy of Stroszek on the chopping block next Tuesday! Now you, too, can laugh until you cry if you pledge to WFMU!
-
I'm not saying you should donate now, but Bryce and Fabio are really great together. Bryce is especially funny.

CURSES! Laurie and her Doddy have knocked my pledge out of the water! How can I compete with that dynasty?

Lavish your daughter with money instead of affection.
-
Blums aren't so good at displays of affection. :'(
-
Shit, I'd be grateful for the bucks. Some of us get neither.
-
Hey does anyone know if I can pledge specifically to the show after the fact online? I've never pledged online before, not really sure how that works.
I swear I have a really good excuse for not calling in!
-
You can just donate and then ask for the Tom Fun Pack (if it's over $75) but I don't know if that "counts" as being part of the show's pull.
Isn't Bill Kelly really popular too, or does he still have a show? I don't even know!
There was a while when Glen Jones was top dog in terms of fundraising, but I'm wondering if possibly he's been surpassed by Tommy Tornado(??). I guess it doesn't matter. I don't wanna start a turf war here!
-

when i pledged online, i put comments with my pledge and hatch read it with my name and pledge amount.
chances are, if you comment with your intentions, it will be noted?

It does: "Your individual DJ Premium choices will also result in that DJ's program being credited with part of your overall pledge" ("WFMU 50th Anniversary 2008 Marathon" mailer).
Isn't Bill Kelly really popular too, or does he still have a show? I don't even know!
He does indeed, and, on SSD yesterday, Ken said he is still very popular.

I'm pretty sure Glen Jones beat the Kid last year. This year? Who knows?
-

I've never heard the Glen Jones show before and the show's page on the WFMU site doesn't really give much info as to what it's about. So what's the deal? Why is it so popular? Is it primarily a music show?
-
I heard that Dave Emory raised $55k. Pretty impressive for a 1 hour show.
-

Why not pledge online during the show?
Actually, if anyone wants to pledge to Tom's show and can't do it during show time, PM me and I will manually enter your details for you this tuesday as if you phoned in.

I haven't listened in years, but as I recall it it's like a lot of mainstream rock, some punk, and then somewhat marginal but not totally-mainstream stuff like Rufus Wainright, Tom Waits, etc. but there's also a lot of talk with Glen Jones and his co-host X-Ray burns. X-Ray is like Mr. Ultimate Blue Collar Jersey and he's hilarious. Glen Jones holds it down and runs things and acts as the straight man and X-Ray is like an Insane-Clown-Posse-obsessed middle-aged punk guy and they both drink a lot of beer and smoke and they're enormously popular with WFMU regulars and a whole demographic that might not necessarily be tuning in to hear scratchy record music or someone gargle milk through Sousaphone or whatever else is on fmu. It's a similar format to TBSOWFMU, but the vibe is more morning-zoo-ish, but sort of in a good way.
Also, yeah, Bill Kelly is like a legend in New York rock circles as far as I understand.
-
MoS, JJ has pretty much covered it all, so I'll just say Glen Jones and esp. X-Ray Burns are very funny indeed. The music is all utterly familiar and mainstream--there's not even a playlist because it's all so hackneyed--but the talk is grand. You may disagree from time to time, but so what? It's entertaining and frequently hilarious. You should check it out. (And, by the way, Glen Jones has quit smoking. But not X-Ray.)
-
I gave to my Neil Young bootleg trading pal Joe Belock trying to stir up trouble between him and Todd-o-phonic Todd. Listen to the first half hour you'll hear it.
-
I heard that Dave Emory raised $55k. Pretty impressive for a 1 hour show.
Very impressive! (Good show too.)

that was a complete fabrication on my part. Does he do anything different for Marathon time?

I'll make a huge donation if I can get that.

He actually raised $911 (seriously), which is pretty funny.

The more passionate devotees of our lord and master may be interested to know he'll be cohosting Noah's show next Wednesday from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. and the Cherry Blossom Clinic on March 8.
Andy, I knew you were lying, but I so wished you'd been telling the truth. It would be great if Dave Emory were the top earner.
-
Andy, I knew you were lying, but I so wished you'd been telling the truth. It would be great if Dave Emory were the top earner.
the only situation where i could see dave emory gain top earner status is if he could manage to get this guy to play songs for pledges:
since tom's doing it for working guys like me all year long, i'm donating the sum total of the mandatory overtime i'm working at my lab this week to wfmu.

Blums aren't so good at displays of affection. :'(
That's what we are for.

Hey, people. I moved to Los Angeles, and I've so far out of the loop that I barely chuckle when I hear the phrase "soft serve." I still get a mysterious smile when "Hate Me Now" comes on. And I'm pledging to the Best Show.
If you listen to the Best Show without supporting it, I will end your entertainment career. Freeloaders are pantloaders. Good guys win... FOREVER.

I'm starting to warm to "Pledge or I'll End Your Entertainment Career" as a WFMU marathon slogan.

This is one of those jokes where you think it might be true for some weird reason (George Soros likes it?), but when you find out it's a joke it suddenly becomes hilarious.
-
That was exactly my reaction to it, Jason. :D

Have fallen in love with the best show over the last 6 months or so.
Listening in the UK, so am unable to listen live (would be a disservice to my students to stay up so late) so what is the best method of pledging my full support to the best show? I'm sure WFMU has further treats to be discovered, but would like to feel like I'm making a contribution for Tom, Ted and Patton to deliver an awesome show.
Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For it to "count" for the Best Show, you have to pledge by phone or online while the Best Show is airing. Every pledge helps WFMU -- the point is to help WFMU while also making sure that Tom commands some RESPECT.
-
Again, I quote the flyer: "Your individual DJ Premium choices will also result in that DJ's program being credited with part of your overall pledge."
-
I have taken two remote pledges already.
If you want to pledge during Tom's show but can't make the call tomorrow night then don't hesitate to PM me.
