What do you think of The Goddamn Dave Hill Show?

I rightfully stopped listening to TGDHS after Dave had some weirdo in studio who described in length his sexual father-son relationship with a person he met on the Internet named "Little China Boy." It's disturbing toilet radio.

Not a fan.  I wasn't expecting it to be a continuation of The Best Show, I was expecting something completely different and I was willing to give it a fair chance.  I've concluded that it's not for me.

Kink Kamp for life.

Liking the show by the way.
It's good stuff.

Maybe Dave will have Woody Allen on at some point. Woody is apparently good friends with Dick Cavett, and it seems like he'd be a good fit for the show.

One of the great things about BSOWFMUWTS is that Tom went the opposite direction of "edgy" radio by playing down the Turlet Talk- no swearing, no pervy topics - unless it was to tease Mike.  Way more subversive than Kink Kamp.

He's neither funny nor charismatic.  Low energy.  I like his taste in music but I don't to go to this show and discover something new, unlike Best Show playlists.  He's had on Todd Barry and Jon Benjamin- pluses.  Kevin Allison twice, people from shitty 90s metal bands- minuses.  This is very similar to his podcast and he's met my low expectations.  Not for me.

No one can replace Tom and his Best Show on 'FMU.  Not even if someone actually good took over the slot, let alone Dave Hill.

My thoughts exactly.

I listened to two episodes and I determined that the show really isn't worth my time. It's the polar opposite of the kind of radio that Tom did, the kind of radio that I was accustomed to listening to. And that's fine. I'm sure it appeals to some people. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah, not a fan either. I have nothing against Dave in general. I actually thought his book was really funny. His podcast is decent, which is the format that his style of humor would be more befitting, I guess. I'd like to think I gave the GDDHS a fair chance, but after two weeks, I've decided (like many others have stated) that it's not for me. My Tuesday nights have since been dedicated to Best Show Archives. Well, pretty much every night at work is dedicated to Best Show Archives (and other WFMU shows). I am glad that others are giving it a fair shot and some people seem to be enjoying it.

I was talking to a friend of mine who is in the band ex wife (great band, by the way). He turned me on the The Best Show. We were discussing the difference between how Tom and Jon talk about more adult topics versus how Dave Hill and his guests talk about "adult" topics.

My friend Phil said, "On The Best Show, Tom and Jon are a little more subtle and creative. They used phrases like 'Pant Rummage' and 'Pant Pudding'. That makes quite a difference."

I  think my friend summed things up with that statement.

I love it, though I was a fan of Dave's podcast & comedy beforehand.

As with the Best Show I'm, admittedly, not a huge fan of every dang guest on or song played - we all have different tastes - and, yeah, Kevin Allison's a bit much but ... I think I just enjoy the way it seems everyone's just hanging out. It's not just a question/answer interview.  The stories just come out naturally and it's genuine humour.  I tune in live every Tuesday. I hear some good tunes. I love Dave's voice. I laugh, often out loud.

Works for me.

I'm on the fence about it. He's only a few episodes in so it's hard to judge what it's going to be yet. I listened to just the first few Best Shows and based my opinion on it, I probably would have thought it wasn't for me.

I think Dave is funny and has a very pleasant radio demeanor. I love that he sounds genuinely happy to talk to callers on the show (at least until some open their mouths.) I actually thought the Kevin Allison Kink-Camp stuff was interesting, even though most of what he was describing was repulsive to me, because it was a window into a world I know nothing about nor will I ever be involved in.

That said, the show does tend to drag at times and I get tired of the metal/Satan talk. I don't know how long he's had to prepare to take the WFMU reins, but it seems like he's still feeling his way around what the show should be. I think there needs to be a way to break the show up a bit so it doesn't feel like guys just talking on the phone for 3 hours.

I've only listened to the first one so far. I didn't really know who he was or hear his podcast before, so I feel like I've been thrown in at the deep end with a lot of weird characters and references to bands I've never heard of. He seemed like a pleasant enough sort, though. I'll definitely listen to more.

Dave co-hosting Ken's second marathon show is really winning me over.  They have extremely compatible schtick.

He's growing on me. Therese was a great co-host last night for Dave's marathon show but she's brightens up anyone's show.

Therese has the most winning on-air manner...I so wish Depravity's Rainbow were a thing, they had great rapport

Tried listening at the start, but Phil Anselmo bums me out as a human being.

Beavis and Butt-head led me to believe that his name was "Pantera." You mean there's no guy named Pantera?

I stayed up really late at the library on campus one night researching for a paper on Rome, so I tuned into the like...last hour as a break because I had been researching for a few hours at this point, and at the end of a call Hill said, "Well, want me to play you out with a sweet riff?," and began playing the opening riff to "Carry On My Wayward Son," and I laughed so goddamn hard....I need to listen to him more.

i love it.

(i feel like i need to qualify this, because i love the best show, and i respect and admire tom, and i miss the show.  that being said, Dave Hill is a completely different beast, and is doing a different kind of show.  a previous commenter mentioned that they might not be on board with the best show if they had just listened to the first 10 shows.  in other words, gave dave a chance.  Dave has a different pace, and different style and is trying to build an all together different thing.  the show dave did after the marathon where he called people and sang Billy Joel to them was great.)

Au contraire- Anselmo sounded good natured, charming, and smart... inebriated, but quick witted. I wasn't feeling Dave Hill, but Phil Anselmo of all people won me over.

Charming though he may be, he's got weird white-power rants in his closet which just make him unlikeable to me (Phil, that is).

I made it through 3 episodes then decided to explore the best show archives instead.
- I thought Dave's book Tasteful Nudes was fantastic
- his erotic short stories on twitter often made me cry laughing
- I like how he answers the phone "It's Dave... who is this?" and responds to How are you with "I'm incredible"

The biggest minus for me was, no offense to Tom, that I couldn't put it on to fall asleep to because of the guitar noodling.

I stopped listening it. I did like it. I did not love it. One thing I did like is that he ALWAYS has guests. The guitar gets annoying sometimes.

This is going to sound really horrible, but when I listen to Dave Hill's show... it just makes me miss The Best Show more. It's nothing against Dave Hill. It truly isn't.

I also like the "call me back in 20 minutes" thing.

Oh yeah. He's gotten a nice little rotation of recurring bits. I like how he refers to the songs as "sweet jams."

Also on the first episode when he says, "I've recently gotten into writing erotic short stories. Turns out that's something else I'm pretty sweet at," I died laughing.

same time slot; two totally different shows. I like Best Show better, but I am also loving Dave's humor. I like how he is always admitting that he can't work the equipment, etc. "I'm just a wild horse." "I can't believe they let me have the keys to this place." That's another place where he is different to Tom, who was a professional broadcaster, but I kind of like the haphazardness of Dave's show.

His guests are usually interesting. Kevin Allison is hilarious. Bobby "from the Woods" Tisdale is not overly funny, but is kind of like a warm cup of coffee to start the show. He's had on Malcolm Gladwell, Damien Echols, Jen Kirkman, Michael Ian Black, Todd Barry, Dick Cavett, Steve Buscemi, Joe Franklin and more.

I like some of this bits, like erotic short stories, the cringeworthyness of when a fan calls to "jam" with him over the phone, and "Weather Channel Headline or Nightmare on Elm Street Dialogue" game.

Again, not Tom and the many times I was doubled over in laughter listening to the Best Show, but I think Dave's show is still an entertaining one and something I am happy to listen to for the whole running time.

There was an episode from late 2007 when Laurie asked Tom what he thought of "King of Miami." Tom said he thought it was funny. Portents.
