I'll start with F*cked Up's cover of "Do they Know It's Christmas."

I'm fortunate to have gotten the Eddie G christmas albums for a handful of years, and there be some great stuff on them. One of my faves is a Christmas version of Eddie Noack's "Psycho" by Thirsty Dave's Western Caravan. I'm a ghoul.
Also, Rufus Thomas "I'll Be Your Santa Baby"
http://popup.lala.com/popup/504684702259297677
Ethiopians "Ding Dong Bell"
http://popup.lala.com/popup/432627065030578422
3 Aces and a Joker "Sleigh Bell Rock"
(no link)
Hank Ballard "Christmas Time For Everybody But Me"
Untamed Youth "Santa's Gonna Shut 'Em Down"
Sonics "Don't Believe In Christmas"
I guess my favorite traditional xmas song would be The Little Drummer Boy.

Hello, FOT,
My boss uses Pandora Christmas music as her background music this time of year, which is my nightmare. Partly this is due to my atheism: Yes the drummer boy played a pretty song. But it was just for a baby who later lied about being omniscient. So what?
If you listen to Pandora Christmas you'll notice that you hear the same song several times by different artists even if you say you don't like the song. The most objectionable of them are:
Santa Baby (With a bullet. Sexual Santa? It should not be done.)
Jingle Bell Rock (Not actually a rock song.)
Beyonce doing Christmas music. (Just irritating.)
Thank you, forum.

I guess I'll have to steer clear.
Though I am tempted to try and beat it.

I've already heard "Santa Baby" about 3 times in various lady stores over the past few weeks. I realized I'm way done with that song.
-
The Madonna version of Santa Baby is especially creeepy.
-
The first time I heard it--around 1980; it was the Eartha Kitt version--I found it amusing. I have since grown very weary of it.
John Fahey's Christmas music is purty.

For a minute I thought you said Joey Fatone.

Only heard this song for the first time recently, was delighted to find that Mr. Patton had done a hilarious takedown thereof.

Anything involving Alvin and The Chipmunks. This especially.
It didn't survive when they relaunched the Chipmunks in the '80s and turned Dave Seville into a pathetic wimp, but I did appreciate the escalating tension between Alvin and Dave in the original Chipmunks, most evident in their Christmas song.
I bet Brian Wilson used to listen to Alvin giving Dave all kinds of shit in the studio and dream of some day being able to get away with doing that to Murry Wilson. He'd probably listen to Chipmunk records repeatedly around the Holidays, thinking about how cool it would be to be like Alvin, until Mike Love would get sick of hearing them and throw Brian's Chipmunks records on the roof.
After the current movies have passed and it's time to re-invent the Chipmunks again, they should get back to that original Alvin/Dave dynamic, and maybe toughen Dave up by giving him a glass eye. And maybe he could carry a gun to the studio like Phil Spector, but he'd only pull it on Simon or Theodore because Alvin would always call him out on not having the guts to use it.
Anyway, Merry Christmas!

I don't know why I've enjoyed this as much as I have...

RE: Comedy Death Ray's 'Do They Know it's Christmas' cover. I, too, enjoy it immensely.
I don't know if it's some west coast/east coast beef, but, as has been mentioned elsewhere on the boards, there seems to be someone missing from this so-called "All Star" line up.
And that person's name rhymes with Schom Tarpling.

My cousin just hipped me to this hunk of holiday garbage: Neil Diamond's "Cherry Cherry Christmas". It's basically Neil Diamond wishing the world A Neil Diamond Christmas. He namechecks or quotes about a dozen of his own songs in it. It is one of the most self-indulgent pieces of garbage I have ever heard. (Still better than "Porcupine Pie" though).

I was killing time yesterday, so I was farting around in one of those TJ Maxx/Home Goods store (currently in a small town in the middle of PA) and I heard Santa Baby TWICE. One was the Eartha Kitt, and then the second version about 45 minutes later was like a dance mix version with some pop star type singing. I couldn't tell who it was.
Then ... then ... the worst Christmas song i think I have ever heard came on. It stank so bad, and I had to google it... turns out it's from a few years ago and somehow I'd been blissfully ignorant:

I don't care if Captain Sensible was in the Damned, or if this song is like a Big Statement about how commercial Christmas has become, it sucks.

My best guess is, I think most everyone else in that video is a standup/improv-type person, which Tom really isn't.

I like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." I like it because I didn't figure out until last year that SPOILER
Santa Claus was the little girl's dad.

For me, it's not really Christmastime until I have the tree up and a few lights sprinkled in. "Sleigh Ride" by Johnny Mathis gets me pumped. Top notch.

I am partial to Mary J. Blige's "Christmas In the City." It's the kind of song that can make a winter walk down a NYC street feel just perfect.

I think my favorite part about the whole Christmas season is having an excuse to listen to the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack.

While I am as much a partisan of WFMU as anybody, Jon Solomon's 24 hour Christmas-radio-extravaganza on Princeton's WPRB is legendary.

I just found out yesterday there is a Puff Daddy/Mase version of 'Santa Baby'. I thank whatever divine influence has spared me from ever hearing that.

Can anybody recommend any good WFMU Christmas music archive shows? I thought that Dan Bodah had a good one a couple of years ago.

Would it be bad to post something I wrote myself?
The answer is admittedly probably yes. But there is a chance some people might enjoy it.

The other day, I actually watched the movie inspired by this song. And its sequel (what can I say--I was, as Andy might say, havin' a time). The followup involved a boy dying and donating his liver to the beloved of the grownup Christmas shoe boy, a miracle that allowed him finally to recover from the trauma of his mother's death all those years before. Fine holiday fare, although I think the makers of the film missed out on a great opportunity when they chose not to call it The Christmas Liver.

Christmas is a menace to music. It brings out the worst in everyone, except for the Singing Dogs.
