Title: The FOTcast
Post by: Geoff Johnston on September 02, 2009, 03:00:43 PM
This started in the General Discussion boards, but I'm moving it here.

This week I started the FOTcast, a podcast made up of songs suggested by fellow FOTs.  Dig it here:

http://thehangingbrain.wordpress.com/the-fotcast/

Download via the ol' Right-Click > "Save Link As..." here:  MP3 download available at the above link;

I'd like to do this regularly, so please use this thread to suggest as many songs as you'd like for upcoming FOTcasts.  As long as there are enough suggestions, I'll keep it going.  Cool?  Thanks!

also, i continue to stand by my Harlan T. Bobo suggestion; however, if you have trouble finding/purchasing it, go with "American Slang", Jack O. (iAmBaronVonTito)

The last FOTcast I could not burn onto CD.

I enjoyed FOTcast #1 up to the Montrose song ... but it cut off after that. I tried the MP3 download and the on-screen player. Both cut off at the same place.

Checking out #2 now ...

My request for #3 is the Pixies cover version of the Beatles "Wild Honey Pie".

Ok, sorry i haven't pulled this together yet.  Work, holidays, etc.

I plan to post it tonight.  But, if i may be so bold, I have a request to make.

If you have the means*, please record your own a capella rendition of "Jazz Fart" and post it here.**  I'd like to get as many of you in on this as possible and mix them together.  So it will be like one big Manhattan Transfer-like FOT "Jazz Fart" cover.  Despite the 17/1 time signature, I think it could also work as a round, like 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat."  Who's with me?

Stay tuned.

Thanks!

*If you don't have the means, send me a message and I'll reply with my phone number, you can call me, and I'll record it over the phone.  Long distance charges may apply.

** UPDATE: If you'd rather e-mail me your take on "Jazz Fart," just check my profile and send it to the Gmail address listed there.  (Thanks, Steve!)

Uhhh, I dunno.  However long it takes to get recordings of about 10 folks doing it, give or take.  Its completion is completely based on FOT response.

I don't know if I could do this without giggling.

Now you HAVE to do it.  Giggles and all.

Thanks, Martin.  This particular FOTcast was light on the hippity-hop, so I felt it necessary to, as the kids say, reprezent!

And for those suggested songs that are noticeably absent, my apologies.  I've been purchasing the songs I don't already have from Amazon or Rhapsody, because they don't lock the files DRM-style. SO, if I wasn't able to find a song at either of those sites, I had to sideline 'em.  If you're dying to get them into a future FOTcast, just e-mail an mp3 to the Gmail account listed in my profile.

What say we shoot for an XMAS FOTcast!  Please suggest some holiday songs for the next FOTcast and as soon as we get 10 - 15 songs, I'll compile and post accordingly.  Hopefully, it will be a nice mix to listen to for those of us traveling to our respective [insert holiday of choice] destinations in a few weeks.

And don't forget about the Jazz Fart FOT sing-a-long.  I'm about to provide Fredericks with my phone number so he can call in his contribution.  I've never been so delighted/frightened.

Thanks again for all your help!

Got it.  As soon as I have enough of them, I'll sew 'em all up.  I don't think Terry Bozzio is up to much these days, so I may have him come by and lay down a beat, provided his kit will fit in my house:

I'm afraid the statute of limitations is running out on Jazz Fart's potential and I haven't gotten enough of a response to warrant a remix.  However, the few FOT renditions I have received can and will be slipped into the next FOTcast. So, if you're feelin' it, request away.

So, the FOTcast is no more.  I took it down for two reasons.

First, it sorta died a natural death as no new songs were being suggested and interest wained.  And by "wained" I mean "completely dissipated".

Second, and most importantly, I did not ask for Tom's blessing in this endeavor.  See what happens?  Without the expressed approval from the man himself unsanctioned Best Show spin-offs will rightfully wither on the vine.

Lesson learned.

Your input is very encouraging.  Thanks!

After the pledge drive I will call in and ask (beg?) for Tom's blessing to carry forth the FOTcast.  Fingers crossed!

Oh, Frederixxxx, I had no idea we shared any musical interests at all.

Although I like their middle period stuff better.

Oh, Frederixxxx, I had no idea we shared any musical interests at all.

I feel certain I'll surprise you.

What else do you think we wouldn't both enjoy, Snootcoat?

I like middle period Negativland myself.  However, there was a very good reason for me choosing that particular piece.

Why was it not included?  Ask the FOT-cast-guy.

Timing is everything.

Now I think he ruined it.

Thanks for reminding me.

Snoot-Coat is definitely fair in general, but probably not here.  I wasn't saying the stuff I liked was better - just had never found before that we liked anything in common.

I don't like the Negativland-Chumbawumba stuff at all, and they've gotten repetitive lately, but Escape from Noise-Helter Stupid-Dispepsi-U2 Negativland is great and very interesting to me.

A thousand apologies.  I broke my ankle and have totally been slacking.  There's a backlog of Best Shows that I need to get caught up on.  I usually listen to BS while I'm driving to and from work and, with ankle busted, I haven't driven since May 1st, and thusly I'm that far behind.

PITY ME!

Just kidding (about the pity, not the broken ankle).  I haven't checked in here on the boards since, because it only reminded me of what I was missing.  But I'm on the mend and will soon be back up to snuff.  Promise!  I miss the Best Show and all youse guyses and a FOTCAST will be up shortly.  Stay tuned.

So, there hasn't been any suggestions since the last FOTcast.  And why would there be?

Fredericks' podcast has successfully fused the perfect combination of Woodstock brown acid and Art Bell, an act that immediately renders all other internet audio productions obsolete.

GET THESE SPIDERS OFF OF MY LEGS!!!

Sorry, I was still feeling the residual effects of listening to Fredericks podcast, part deux.

Of course, I kid because I love.  I love our man Fredericks and I love his podcast.  And even without your song suggestions, I still love doing the FOTcast.  So, please enjoy the latest episode "Banngaeaed in the USA" (link below).
