If the JFC thread gets that much play, surely there should be one for this better HBO show.
I adore Flight of the Conchords. The songs are great; the banter is better.

That's interesting, Dorvid - I wish the show was hitting like that for me. There's this trend of dry, low-key comedy right now that I'm not so big a fan of; it doesn't deliver what I'm looking for. I don't think the show has to get loud or broad to get good, but I like some fireworks in my comedy. Some surprises. Kristen Schaal does a lot with her role, but the concept of a psycho fan of her kind is an old, fairly tired device - Tenacious D did it past its prime, even, but they then twisted it by making the band become obsessed with the fan. The funniest joke to me has been Judah Friedlander as a guy trying to pawn a cake, because it was silly and surprising, and that was just a throwaway. Now that I think of it, maybe it's just the tone of the show - I've never seen a guy replace his bandmate with a tape, but seeing it didn't make me laugh. My main problem is the songs - they're way too long. I think FotC make pleasant music, but the length of their musical sequences so far have been pushing it, for my tastes. On stage it's charming and impressive, but on a television show it's just not working for me. That said, however, I do think the guys are talented, there have been some well-written bits/jokes in there and they are legitimately great at deadpan (it's just that deadpan isn't what I'm looking for right now). Oh and I love seeing Lenny Venito get work.
I dunno. It's not bad so much as I'm not really interested in what they're bringing to the table.

Agreed on most points, Jouster.
I'd say that making Kristen Schaal's character both married and the band's only fan is enough of a twist to not be hacky, though they'll probably have to go further with it or it'll dry out.
I can also see how a few seconds off of the songs would help the pacing. The Conchords are like the D for me in the sense that the songs are never as funny as the scenes, but they provide a good excuse to heighten things, get wackier with the production values, etc...
I wouldn't say the Conchords are breaking new ground, per se, but they're just so darn earnest, you wanna give them a hug.
Most leads in comedies, even the best ones, are punchable people. I'm just glad to see it can work the other way.
-
They're like Tenacious D to me in that they're show is written exactly like Tenacious D's, and then given to Wes Anderson to direct. That was the impression I got from the first episode. Which isn't to say that I completely disliked it.
-
I like them and I like the show. I guess it must help that I've seen very little Tenacious D.
-
I saw the first episode and thought it was ok. I didn't really like the songs though. It's definitely nowhere near as funny as Larry Sanders, which is a favorite of mine. But then, the two really aren't comparable. It is more along the lines of Tenacious D but it's a completely different blend of humor.

I really enjoy the exaggerated Kiwi accents. Wait, are they exaggerated? Oooohhh, Brit. He's icktually a charmer.
-
Ah, yes, the accent. When my family lived there when I was five, I was known as "See-rah."

Thoses guys are hilarious. I have never heard of anyone else coming ou of New Zealand. But the flight of the conchords show is real funny. I'm glad its getting some movement:) Music is funny especially "The Humans are Dead"
"We poisened there asses with poisounous gasses"
lyrics from song
-
They are the New Zealend version of Tenacious D. But not as funny. Tenacious D also practice toilet talk. But the Conchords don't.

I agree that there's nothing original about this show (it's kind of similar to the Mighty Boosh as well), yet it's consistently amusing. And it's a high level of amusment, not the "oh, I kinda tittered" kind. These are solid titters.
-
it's kind of similar to the Mighty Boosh as well
I've thought this myself, but I've wondered if it's only because of the musical interludes. The songs definitely remind me of The Mighty Boosh's.
In any case, if one could only be entertained by the original, life would be a desert indeed.
-

It seems like the Conchords' songs are tighter takes on a certain band or style, while the Boosh's tunes are more randomly nutz.

Oh man, the Rhymenocerous and the Hiphopapotamus OWN.

The last episode was so funny

'Twas indeed.

Attention Non HBO - Having FOT
A Youtube dude named ryancorven has been posting high-quality rips of every episode of FotC and no one's yanked them down.
Another guy posted high-quality rips of every episode of Larry Sanders several months ago and no one's yanked those down, either.
I like to imagine there's an HBO lawyer out there with excellent taste in comedy, and he keeps "forgetting" to contact Youtube.
It's a madhouse!

For the Larry Sanders episodes, search for "Larry01", "Larry02", etc...
All 89 of them!
-
Dorvid,
thanks for the heads up on the Larry Sanders episodes!
-
Has anyone seen Eugene Mirman's cameo's in the first couple episodes. Also I heard he is the producer of the show.
-
I saw a guy on the train this morning who looked exactly like Jemaine.
-
OOps! was my post too "gawker"
i dont think it was really him, it just made my morning commute mildly entertaining.
-
I first saw them on One Night Stand and really enjoyed the songs, but I feel like their songs are my least favorite part of the show. They don't fit into the context of the show sometimes and just feel forced. I did love the season finale with Todd Barry though. If they get around to a season two, I'd love to see more of him and the Doggy Bounce. Especially since Mel and Murray are on the Crazy Dogggz bandwagon.
-
Yeah, i think my least favorite part of the show became the songs. Also, the "handsome" conchord had a real shit-eating expression he used a lot that started to drive me up the wall by the end of the season.
I never saw the "Bowie" episode, but I've heard the song and it's a whole lot of not funny. As is listening to it via sound opinions podcast, with Jim DeRogatis trying to tell the other egghead WHY it's funny.
-
The songs were really hit-or-miss. The ones that hit were great though.
I also think Jemaine is the real brains behind the operation, and Bret is just eye-candy. People will say "but he's the normal one! Jemaine just gets all the best lines! blah blah blah. Even when Bret is given a funny line, he steps all over it with his utter lack of comedic timing.
I wish they'd use the minor characters more. Mirman as the landlord and Arj Barker's characters are both hilarious.
I'm excited for season 2.
-
Yeah, the Bowie song sucks. I can't believe they left "If You're Into It" off the album.

This is a show I assumed I would hate because it's the hipster-est. But I ended up enjoying it, against my wishes. Kudos, gentlemen, for winning me over.
