Title: Some observations after listening to the archive of last night’s show
Post by: Sarah on July 04, 2007, 09:57:26 AM
*  I love the way Tom attributes all kinds of suspect behavior to Mike.
* Jame Lee Curtis should get together with Gene Simmons.
* I missed these PBR gems last night:  “If I had my brothers,” “People still say ‘magnolia,’ ” “I’m going to go to Blockbuster tonight to take ’em.”
* I hate chirpy, folksy, self-consciously American music.
* “Cowboy Star” is without doubt worse than “Porcupine Pie.”  The latter is merely stupid; the former is beyond pretentious.

Yeah, at least "Porcupine Pie" seems to be self aware of its stupidity. "Cowboy Star" had almost all the elements of a horrible song; AND IT WAS EDITED!! Right out of the gate, it sounded so bad with poor audio. Then, it became even worse with the violins and the orchestra. However, this song was entertainingly bad. I loved it when the Copland portion of the song came along. "Little taste of Americana...like being out on the prairie!" "Cowboy Star": infinitely worse

LYRICS!

Cowboy Star (Released 1976)

So city smog and dog eat dog
For some may hold sublime
Well as for me if I had my way
I'd had lived some other time

Praise the prairie
And pass the cake
I'd like to eat it too
But being born now was my mistake
I've passed the buckaroo

I'd say
You're right
No chance why fight?
Why be a cowboy star

hump back brahmas
Lovely cow mamas
Saw dust floor saloons
Dance hall queens romanced in my dreams
So why pop my balloon?

No chance
Why fight?
Still in my own right
I'd be a cowboy star

Dreams of my life
Are so carried away
If just in my dreams
I could be for one day
Just for one day

Lost in my dreams
I'll be riding away
Like a cowboy star

Stage set: sundown,
In my last showdown I'll be...
<gunshot>

See, this is how the Sopranos should have ended.

The PBR call was a Hall of Famer.  "Philaminion" was a highlight, as was his complete confidence that nothing bad will ever happen to him.

Cowboy Star wasn't worse than Porcupine Pie until the (seemingly unrelated to the first half) second half of the song.  I also read that they based one of their early singles on Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut (he even has a writing credit on the song).  Strike two, at least.

So who here asked Ken to play that on his show this morning?  And did he (I didn't stick around long enough to find out, being overtaken with a desire for breakfast)?

I like that Tom gets Mike involved a little to. Its like how Conan involves the creepy announce Joel.

Was that supposed to be a compliment, LIR? Why do I feel insulted?
