Most of those bands aren't good?  I wish we could get festivals like this in Minnesota. Instead we get jam band, classic rock and metal fests. Bah.

I'm going to go down for at least a few hours during the day. My wife wants to see the Detroit Cobras. But she is pregnant so we probably won't stay for the whole night.

I want to see the Black Lips if only because I appreciate a band that rocks out with their you-know-whats out. Literally. I like rock and roll, but I also like watching boys make out, so it's a win/win situation for me.

I also understand that they have vomited on stage, the guitarist uses his own penis as a guitar pick, and at least one of the band members drank their own "Golden Fluid of Life." That's not what I call it. I saw a picture of someone doing this at the Church of Euthanasia website during the early years of the Internets, and it stuck with me. I also wish people would stop using the term "water sports," because that's seriously ruining water-skiing for me.

Waaaaaaaaah, someone tell these chuckleheads to come to Miami. We have more coke than those assholes in Williamsburg.

Don't get me started on Siren Music Festival or Coney Island (what a dump!). After Saturday I renounced all outdoor music festivals.

Did The Black Lips do an homage to Strotesick (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/44373-photos-siren-music-festival-brooklyn-ny-072107) during their set?

Aw, that's not nice. There's no need to bring fowl into this. I'm having flashbacks to my junior year of high school, when the fuckwit seniors released chickens into the halls and the little sociopaths that roam said halls jammed ballpoint pens into the poor birds and plucked out their feathers. I adopted one of the survivors, who died three weeks later. Most of the chickens died the same day of the "prank," of shock, probably, and injuries incurred at the hands of brats and psychopaths. I hate kids.

I did as well, long ago. I find more than three bands in a day hard to take..

Good Lord, did you go to "Lord of the Flies" High School?

You'd think, right? I was kicked out of Gulliver Prep (don't ask -- it involved the headmistress's grandson, who was very LNS), so I attended public school. Miami Killian Senior High hosted The Killian Nine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killian_Nine). To be fair, Principal Dawson was a total dickhead and had a forty-inch computer monitor in his office, which was paid for by my parents' taxes. WTF? Also, I got a pretty great education. The AP program was good, and I had my best teacher there. He died at a young age, unfortunately, of cancer. I tried finding his memorial page and came across this instead:

How can one not ask about getting kicked out because of incidents involving the headmaster's son?

Reading that Killian Nine article takes me back: I got censored - and censured - (not by name, so not too bad) in front of the whole school for implying that Jesse Helms was a closeted homosexual (and black, and a woman - so it was obviously a joke).

I never got strip searched or arrested, though.  Maybe I should have tried a little harder.

Get your facts straight, son. Headmistress's grandson.

Regarding your Jesse Helms anecdote: Where did you go to school? Huntsville, Alabama?

How stupid of me to pass up the chance to type "headmistress."  You still didn't tell us what happened, though.

The Jesse Helms anecdote actually happened at an extremely liberal six-week summer program for, uh, "gifted" kids in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, so Jesse was our Senator at the time.  My thought is that the heads of the school understood it wasn't polite to call the bigoted old hand that fed them a "gay black woman," even in jest.  I never got the sense that ol' Jesse did much laughin' at hisself.

I was a little miffed about it at the time, but it makes sense in hindsight.

I went on to be censored at both my high school newspaper (in an affluent Triangle suburb) and my college newspaper (the quite liberal Daily Tar Heel at UNC-Chapel Hill).  An underground high school newspaper I was part of was roundly condemned in the Raleigh News and Observer.  I was something of a rabble-rouser with the printed word.

Wait, what's the topic again?

Ahem, I will get back on topic.

I went to the first Siren thing (I think it was the first... or second) and No Sir, I Did Not Like It.  That and the Mermaid Parade.  Hauling ass out to Coney Island by subway is an ordeal in and of itself, and standing in painful painful heat to see the 2 out of 11 good bands just adds insult to injury.  I gotta say, though, the year I went I saw Superchunk and Guided by Voices and they both did a bang up job.  It must've been the second year cause I think the first year was like The Liars and Yeah Yeah Yeah's so it was like this huge Williamsburg-is-on-fire-with-the-future-of-rock thing or something.  Pollard threw a half-filled plastic beer cup into the crowd and it basically landed on Christina The Yes Fan's head.  Luckily she thought it was funny.  However, Some of those GBV fans are mutants, and standing next to them in bazillion degree heat is something of a chore.  We did ride the Cyclone while some band played and that was cool, but yeah, that's a bad hot dog scene, Jed.  I'm with you.  You kinda just run out of things to do and it's too hot to think and you're just like "Guess I gotta get one of these dogs everybody's got..." Then you walk out to the beach and watch the seagulls eat Wendy's out of the trash cans.  How lovely...

The Mermaid Parade was worse to me, though, because once I got there I had no idea why I thought it might be fun in the first place, and it was so hot the heat of the pavement was seeping through my sneakers and burning my feet.

I saw that chicken pic on pitchfork and I gotta say I do not approve of fucking around with animals for entertainment value.  Unless it's a monkey in a suit or something. Give the animal some dignity.

I was hesitant about riding all the way out there, but a few of my friends were going and it's free so I decided it would be worth a shot. I got there, met up with my buddies and promptly turned around. I think We Are Scientists were just starting up and we didn't last one song. I had never been to a music festival, but now instead of saying "I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like being at a music festival" I can say "I don't like being at a music festival."

Liking the Black Lips I kind of know how the crowd must have felt about The Resistance at Poptastrophe 2007.
