Title: Planning a NYC trip
Post by: Martin on July 19, 2007, 07:05:16 PM
I'm planning a trip to Nueva York this fall - my first to NYC, and my first to America (America!). I'm currently browsing around for good flight rates, and decent (inexpensive, clean, and so on) hotels. I'll probably be there around October 10, for about a week. The NY Film Festival is on then, which gives me a legitimate reason to go. I'm flying solo.

Rather than bumping Richard's thread (too late!), I guess this is as good a place as any to ask for advice - hotel-wise, food-wise, to do-wise, etc. I'm obviously not completely in the dark, but if anyone's got something to share, please do.

Cheers

I don't know know much about hotels, but I would shake your hand

Crimestick,

I don't know about the hotels in Sweden, but if you are used to standard European hotels in Germany, France, etc., prepare for a treat.  American hotel rooms (even in NYC, where they tend to be smaller) are ENORMOUS compared to typical European hotels, and even American-style European hotels.

One such "American-style hotel" I stayed in was the Achat in Monheim-on-Rhein, Germany.  Any room where I can touch both side walls at once is NOT an American-style hotel, baby.  On the other hand, the late-shift desk clerk was absolutely beautiful.

Clearly you haven't visited NYC's not so finest hotels where being able to touch all 4 wall easily is not so difficult.

Ouch. The Flatotel hiked their rates again. Okay, next time, I'm staying at the Library Hotel... for $489 per night. OUCH.

Richard,

Clearly, baby!  First class all the way.  Or second.  Or whatever.

In NYC I've always stayed on the client's dime.  But American hotels in general - I mean, a $30 room in Omaha or Tucumcari or a $100 room in Jacksonville or Memphis is a freaking palace (space-wise) compared to even the nice hotels I've stayed in in Europe.

Crimestick -- I highly recommend the following food-type activities:

- Endulge in Fondue (or a "Chocolate Syringe" or Chocolate Sandwich) at Chocolate and the Bald Man (you can get this late night. I had it at 1AM after the Galifianakis show in Feb.)

- Eat a peanut-butter filled jalapeno at El Parador in the Village

- Get Tea and Mac N Cheese (or Scones if you want to go more traditional) at Tea and Sympathy

- Check out the noodles at Republic by Union Square

Also -- of all the museums, my favorite is the Whitney. Definitely check it out.

Thanks guys, keep em coming.

Buffcoat - Sweden has way better standard of living than England, Germany and most of continental Europe (ie plumbing, bathrooms, isolation, "fresh & clean", etc). Size don't bother me much, but I need things to be fairly clean. No rats or roaches, preferrably.

With any luck I'll trick a friend to come along, which will radically change my hotel plans, as I'll be able to move up a notch - I hate the fact that double rooms are about the same rates as singles.

Yet another reason to visit Sweden.  It's on my list!

I had some good luck sub-letting apartments on craigslist. I got a dingy room in an apt block on like 12th and Ave A (I think), the owner was some crazy French soprano but it was only. For about 80 a night I got a nice studio apt all to myself with cable and a stereo, on 8th between B and C.
However my dad got a pretty shit deal when he tried to do the same.

These seem like a pretty good deal, especially if there are two of you.

I'll meet up and hang out with you if I am free. Bring me Swedish punk 7"s.

My wife and I just got back from a short vacation in Stockholm and we loved it. It is an amazing city, supper clean, beautiful, really good food and affordable. Oh, and everyone was happy to accommodate  my American hubris in not knowing a lick of their language.

It's on! I just bought my plane tickets, and made some hotel reservations. Three nights at Park 79, two nights at the Pod Hotel, and two nights with friends.

By the by, The Flatotel's rates mysteriously went down again. It ranges from $300-something to $420 a night, which is cheaper than the Library Hotel. The Flatotel, therefore, wins. Bigger rooms, in walking distance to MOMA, and the R train is a short block away. Winner.

I would love to stay at the Flatotel (or any other hotel in that price range), but $300 a night is simply impossible on my budget - it's just beyond me. I mean, my flight is about $600 in total, and that's a return flight from Stockholm to Newark.

Hey, I'm going back to New York - I'll be in the city between April 16 and 22. If anyone knows about potentially great concerts, comedy nights, film screenings, art exhibits and the like during this time, I'd appreciate any suggestions. It annoys me that I'm going back on the 22nd, thereby missing the Tim & Eric show.

Would love more suggestions for good bars and restaurants too. Just found out that the Cheyenne Diner, which I had planned to visit, is closing down, which bummed me out.

(Looking back at this thread, I realize I never reported back on my first trip. The short version: it was awesome.)

Don't judge!

I'm going to Vegas for a couple of days to shoot some stuff for a documentary I'm working on. I decided to take some time off after that and pass by NY on the way back.

I can do this.  Pre-Big-Dipper mini meet-up?  And is it a good idea to bring my wife, who is a very nice, non-punk woman, to a Jay Reatard show?  I'm really asking, not making a weird cryptic joke.

Last time he played at Bowery Ballroom, there weren't many people and the show lasted for probably less than twenty minutes.  I met an FOT (Jed).  It's loud I guess, but I'd say it's a pretty decent atmosphere.

I started a Vegas thread here (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,2340.0.html), but it was a complete disaster so you might aswell add any suggestions you may have in this thread instead.

Jay Reatard sounds like a good idea, but: not really my style. I'll pass.

Grote: any inside info re the world of avant-absurd theatre/performance art that week? (No weird cryptic joke here either.)

I'm seeing the new Charles L. Mee play on Friday the 18th, and I think I can get you a free ticket.  If you don't know Mee, he's a collage artist, and his work would probably be considered hit-or-miss by most.  I think even his train wrecks are interesting and worth watching, but I can't promise it will be at all enjoyable (then again, it might be great).  I also have a pair of comps for the new Richard Foreman joint coming to me and would be happy to accompany you, but Foreman is Foreman, pretty much.  I've heard Kevin Augustine's puppet play at HERE Arts Center is pretty great, but can't get comps (I think it's cheap).

I'll look around for other stuff, but some general recommendations for artists whose work I always love and am never bored by: Young Jean Lee, Nature Theatre of Oklahoma, Soho Rep, Theater of the Two-Headed Calf, National Theater of the United States of America.  I know all of these people and am affiliated with at least one of them, but I also mean it.

Thanks Jason - I'm making notes of all of this. It's been way too long since I've seen anything good on stage, experimental or not. I'm staying with friends though, so I should probably wait and see how much they have planned before deciding on too much, so I'm holding off the ticket offers for now. Will keep you posted.

I gave a lot of suggestions in the thread that's referenced in your failed thread, 'Stick.  They're all still relevant.  This last time I rode all three rides on the Stratosphere.  In-freaking-tense.

But if you go to Assssscat on Sunday, be there nice and early.
