I'm about 380 pages in, and I have one question: "Effing"? Is that really appropriate in a children's book?
-
Gee ever read Huckleberry Finn.
-
No, Bruce, I've never read The Adventures of Huckleberry Effing Finn.
OF COURSE I HAVE. I don't think it's comparable. The "N" word was perfectly acceptable in polite speech during that era.
-
She always said that the first book was the most child-oriented and that they would get more adult after that.
Wait till you get to page 680 where they recreate the sacrifice scene from "Apocalypse Now."
-
I understand that the Death Eater orgy on page 733 makes the writings of the Marquis de Sade look like A. A. Milne. I can't wait!

It was called being a smart ass

We need to start a spoiler friendly thread on this as I am kinda mad about the book.

I keep asking the London Cabbies to take me to Diagon Alley. No one thinks I am funny.

Well, I'm currently lollerskating. That is to say, I lol'd, which is to say that I think you are funny, and that is all that matters.

I can tell you exactly where Diagon Alley is.

See the corner of New Row and Bedfordbury? God down Befordbury and there is an alley running parallel to New Row runnign towards St Martin's Lane.

Are you sending Poor Richard in the direction of a good old fashioned English mugging?

wait unitl you get to page 736.

Omg Omg. It is all I can do not to look at that page mentioned. In fact, today I am briefly breaking my self-imposed temporary internet leave of absence that I have been adhering to for a couple weeks so as to not have this book spoiled.
-
I posted this on AST, but I'll post it here because I'm really wondering just how good these books can be:
My best friend just told her husband to tell me she's "not accepting phone calls tonight" so she can finish the book which she bought yesterday. Didn't really care why I was calling, but let me know, through him, that she wouldn't be talking to me tonight.
I'm not really sure any book is good enough to allow someone to be that rude. That's all I'm saying. I still love her, but I'm pretty pissed off.

Obliviate!

That's the page where Snape rapes Harmione.
(I'm sorry. I stole this joke from the Onion. I also apologize for the tasteless of my comment. So double apologies. I am so, so sorry.)

Yeah, I think she took liberties with the language she could use in this book. I think the one draw about the book was that it aged with the core readership of the first book and they could "grow older" with the characters.
That might be the case but I think she forgot somewhere along the way that in the end Harry Potter is a childrens book and after that original group have finished the series it will become a childrens book again. I can understand that certain things were unavoidable in the series that made it more mature than a normal kids book. But, the language was definitely not needed, and frankly felt gratuitous.
-
I was looking for a magical-themed version of Deadwood, language-wise, so of course I was disappointed.
-
Never read a Harry Potter book. Tried and couldn't do it. But the new movie is pretty sweet. Especially the appearance of Helena Bonham Carter.

Amazingly they didn't even have to make her up.
-
I never read the books either, but I like the movies. I am curious, are Herminey and the REdhead (Eff if I know how to spell their names or what they are...) locking braces or what? In the last movie there was mad sexual tension, and now they seem to have some couple's rapport but there's no snogging. Also, the new movie is notable for having a character that might as well not exist except that she kisses Potter and then rats out the gang and gets intentionally ignored for the rest of the movie (even though you find out later she was pretty much tortured into ratting them out, which actually kinda makes her even less interesting).
I heard the new Potter book is basically Tropic of Cancer with magic tricks. Am I right?
-
Pretty much. The hardcore scenes don't bother me as much as the language though. Love can't be censored man. Even if it is pretty filthy love....
-
I think Harry needs to meet a nice girl. Someone that won't forget about him during the summer, or turn to the dark side(sorry sounded like star wars) but Harry needs to release some sexual frustration.
-
As evidenced by his role in Equus. And his guest stint on Extras.
-
Oh man, that Extras episode made me feel dirty. Like, Xtina Aguilera dirrrty, with extraneous r's and shit.
Not to say the very least about those Equus videos. Never has horsefucking and mutilation looked so appealing. Not even in Zoo (http://imdb.com/title/tt0874423/). Okay, especially not in Zoo.
-
Haha I got to page 736 and cracked up. It was all in caps too.
Other adult things:
Something along the lines of "Bellatrix looked at Voldemort like he was her lover" ???
And, not trying to give anything away...but was there an implied rape with one character?? What Rowling alluded to seemed to be more than just being beat up.
-
I totally missed that if it was true. I sure hope not.
-
the scene was ambiguous, but i didnt read in that specific way.
also, its funny you mention the "lover" part because i completely glazed over it (one too many harlequins i guess..)

There are at least five instances of this. It's mostly Harry and Ron, but I think Hermione gets one in as well. I didn't mark the pages.
-
but... are they always wearing the horcrux when speaking it? if so, you know who is to blame...
ps: near rutgers tonight 5-8pm? care to join some fellow harry potter enthusiasts in a discussion of book 7? join us in the SCILS lounge. Berti Botts jelly belly beans to be served.

You're either joking or you have the "adult version" and the "adult version" is actually different.
I should've gotten the "adult version", maybe!
"Maybe".

They don't actually say the real word, but there's a lot of effin' and jeffin' in the book. Well, mostly just the "effing."
