Lets find every curse, I think it might be fun. Cursing is great, so lets give it a shot, yuh know, see what happens!
YANKEES VS. METS: One of those dudes accidentally calls the other one a shitty inventor, holy cow!
TOM CHALLENGES WFMU DJS TO A FIGHT: DJ OJ says "fuckin'" and Tom is all like "(groans) nice."
ME: every time I hear a curse I say "HOLY SHIT" which makes more cursing happen. I fucking love it.
TO ALL THE NAYSAYERS WHO ARE GONNA POOPOO THIS THREAD:
GET BENT! Cursing is the way to go and if you can't take it its because you are not a bad boy like me. Girls love bad boys so guess what? I get more girls than any of yeh

TOM CHALLENGES WFMU DJS TO A FIGHT:
Ah, that's a great show. (4/10/01) That one lady, DJ Sue(?), had Tom on the ropes for awhile there. (Call starts at 59:15)
I liked her moxie; does she still have a show?
There's also a fantastic Gorch call at 1:06:48 into that one. (Thought I'd mention that since it's not mentioned in the archive summary.)

Matt Walsh curses for no particular reason followed by DJ Clue and Liquid Brooklyn's incredible set.

YES. Another unmentioned-in-the-archive-description Gorch call happens during the first 2001 Marathon show; Tom plays a clip from the original call which features a lot of bits that got cut for the CD, and it's followed up by a call from the Gorch. I'm always looking out for those calls because my buddy Andrew is a big on the Gorch.

I was just thinking about this the other day
there is a show I forget which, but it's got to be a 2005 one
in which Tom is having technical problems and he kind of drops an f bomb under his breath.
But you hear it.

This thread makes me want to write FUCK!
Sorry

I don't believe this. Tom is a consummate professional (unlike Andy Breckman who's foulmouth has been noted a lot)

This never happened.
Tom.

Oh, and for the record, any of the curses that callers might've said didn't actually get on the air. They were deleted from the air signal but not from the stream.
So I am keeping toilet language off the airwaves. Fear not, parents of America.
Tom.

Okay, I feel kinda dumb for not being able to figure this out:
How does the delay work for radio?
For example, someone curses. You hit the DUMP button, removing the seven second delay that was built up and then you go to live air. But that delay buffer has to reload for the next time. Does the delay machine slow down the audio slightly while rebuilding the delay? How do you go from live air to having a delay again?

I've always wondered about that too. trusty old wikipedia has a good article on broadcast delay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tape_delay_(broadcasting)). apparently in older systems the delay builds up by adding to pauses in talk. in more modern systems, the computer can even add to the delay while music is playing.
-
on the older shows, when someone gets dumped you hear that flange effect for a few seconds
I always assumed that was the delay recharging.

In the Vice Presidential Debates episode, the first person Tom reaches "at random" to talk about the debates is "Barry Conter," who is a cat-catcher in Vernton, Iowa.
Tom distinctly says "Conter," but Barry himself (to me) clearly pronounces the second letter as a short "u." It's not glaringly obvious, but it's clear enough that I've noticed it each time I've heard it.

At some point Tom Play Big Black's Jordon Minnesota which has a length section where steve albini says "fuck daddy" which brought about a quick fade out. Or maybe it was Bad Penny, it was some big black song, because as soon as it started is thought "Uh oh"

I vaguely remember, long long ago, Tom playing a Minor Threat track on the air (I think it was "I Don't Wanna Hear It", from the Michael Azzerad show) and seemingly forgot that Mr. McKay drops the S-Hit bomb quite liberally all over that track.

'takin' it a bit off course, but this was one of my favorite bits ever...I really miss Benjamin's slow-dragging-build-up-to-less-than-nothing calls; i can't imagine anyone else being able to pull that kinda thing off humorously.
Wait...if Matt Walsh was DJ Clue (or Liquid Brooklyn), who was the big Ian Roberts fan that called in to derail Matt Walsh's Hawaiian Special plug? I had assumed it was someone i didn't know of who collaborated on that, the DJ bit and some others.
enlightenment appreciated!

July 29, 2003 (around the 31 minute mark)
A caller named "Dave" (who sounds an awful lot like 'No-Smoking-Joe/Boring-Owen) calls in about Bob Hope. When asked by Tom what people will say about "Dave" after his death, he responds, "who the fuck is that guy".
-
June 19, 2001: 0:26:39
WFMU DJ Bryce's friend Evan calls to set up a foosball date with Tom, then forgets to put a hyphen between s and hit.
-
July 17, 2001 - About 2 hours 3 minutes in:
A Caller calls up to talk about Jay to Brad Lester, and drops the brown word on the air. You can practically hear Tom Squirm when Brad repeats it immediately after.
-
January 14, 2003. Alan Licht quotes Decline of Western Civilization, drops the F-bomb.
I'm not going to say what the F-bomb is. I keep it clean.

I always assumed that was the delay recharging.
You can create a similar effect using any number of "Time Stretch" type audio effects. Even the cheapest Boss sampler you can buy does this. They basically chop the audio up into tiny pieces and play them back slightly slower than real time. Or a better way to put it is that there are tiny gaps in between the slices of (still full speed) audio. So the pitch isn't lowered (which is what would happen if you actually slowed down the audio) but over time the gaps add up, allowing the delay to build back up.
I've heard it get pretty bad when a show has to dump several times in a row (not necessarily Best Show, but I'm not naming other shows here). I'm assuming if you dump before the delay is recharged, it will slow down more to try to recharge the next one faster?
