My girlfriend has been watching it for what seems like the last six hours (she keeps pausing it to heat up leftovers, check her email, etc.). I've been keeping myself busy with other stuff (like booking the Neighborhoods for a show...) can't bring myself to even look at the screen at this point. Did anybody see and/or like this flick? Should I watch it before it goes back to Hollywood Express?
-
I don't know anything about it, but when I looked it up on IMDb just now, I knew who the director must be just from the stills at the top of the page. I love his movies and so feel comfortable recommending that you watch this one, even though I have no idea what it's about.

Actually, the Neighborhoods sold out its last two out-of-retirement gigs in RI (this gig would be in Boston, but any Hoods involvement is TBD). I wish the Cavedogs would play, but Mark's last I knew was out in LA (he wrote the score for Lucky Louie and does other soundtrack work these days) and I think the other guys are elsewhere in the US. They did one reunion about five or six years ago, sold out the Paradise, and killed it. Tom, if you're reading this, I should mention that we also tried to revive your ace push on Big Dipper, but they wouldn't commit, unfortunately.
Coat of Arms played a couple of shows in the past year or show in Providence, but I didn't catch them. I did see What Now do a one-off at the Living Room last fall, believe it or not.
This particular gig (shameless plug time) that we're working on will definitely include Boston vets The Outlets (who have a second "new" record in the works) and Band 19, as well as Clouds (a new local band in the heavy vein that is an offshoot of Cave In; their record on Hydrahead is badass), films, food, and maybe another surprise or two. The reason for the old home week nature of the show (@ The Baseball Tavern in Boston, Sept. 8) is it's the 30th anniversary party for the Late Risers Club on WMBR FM (I've been the show's producer since 1998, fwiw). I think at this point, even the older bands have been active long enough that it won't stink too much of nostalgia. Of course, the fact that the Hoodoo Gurus are playing that night across the river will create an even bigger Boston babysitter shortage.

As long as Rash Of Stabbings is dormant everything is fine. Now where is that Neutral Nation tape of mine

Rash of Stabbings... ew boy...

Rash of Stabbings... ew boy...
Awful, old school & local ew boy is so right.
But Small Factory and Honeybunch rule.

Small Factory did rule. Dave Auchenbach's previous band was What Now. I asked him at the show about SF gig prospects, but, well, the free Narragansett was flowing that night and.... um... well, I think I would have remembered it clearly if he said yes. One of those bands that for a few years were a reliable, amazing live force and then, like the band Scarce, they were unexpectedly done. (Man, I should scratch that last line...)
I don't know if I ever saw Honeybunch. Did they have a Velvet Crush connection?
-
Yeah Jeff was in both bands Tim. Also yes Scarce are totally missed but this might make your day happier. They are getting back together to record and do some shows.

I'd love to see small factory again, I mean it was like they were playing every other week somewhere.
As long as we don't get a Medicine Ball reunion

Has anyone seen the film Amantes by Vincente Aranda? Just curious. If so, what did you think?

Nice! Another one for the good guys/gals winning in 2007...
Medicine Ball never went away, I believe. They just always tended to take several years to put out albums. I always liked that band, and while I realize they aren't everybody's cup of tea, I don't think their records have captured what they are all about live (with Planet Freakout and Fresh Ape two possible exceptions). Their first lineup was killer. I saw them open for The Screaming Trees and Soundgarden in 1990 or so at the old Living Room (maybe a couple dozen people were there, it was a Sunday night, and SG wasn't quite the buzz band they became). Medicine Ball absolutely slayed. Peter Phillips, who would quit the band to join Six Finger Satellite, was a great presence and guitar player and I think when he split it really took them a while to keep the ball (no pun intended) rolling. Also, I'd do anything to get the original Medicine Ball t-shirt, which had a crazy spiral logo on the front with the band's name and the words "I HATE EVERY F*CKING COP IN THIS GODDAMN TOWN" in bold on the back. Juvenile? Sure.
I spotted Mark Stone (MB's cantankerous bass player) at a Negativland show recently, and I wanted to ask what was up with them these days, but he was always such a prickly personality that I decided to leave him alone. He worked for years at the Providence In Your Ear and you ran the gauntlet every time you engaged him in conversation. My little brother once asked him if they had any Flour on CD and he sighed, then snapped dismissively "no, that's so old." Dick.

Mark Stone was the biggest prick ever selling albums. The day he left In Your Ear I swear I think little teens were dancing everywhere. What a total asshole to deal. And I went to In Your Ear at all three of their locations growing up always having to deal with that bald headed putz.
On the other hand Dennis from Boss Fuel and Jeff from Velvet Crush could not have been nicer.
-
So, did you watch the movie?
-
I saw Volver. I thought it was good, but i was ready for it to end ten or fifteen minutes earlier. the majority of the film is conversation, which can make it drag, but the characters are complex enough that it requires all the chat to better understand them. the cinematography was outstanding, the story was good, the acting was fine. peen-a-lope cruz has beautiful breasts.

But she has a face like a dachshund.
-
I don't agree but must point out that dachshunds have very pretty little faces.
-
So, did you watch the movie?
Define "watch."
-
Did you aim your eyes in its direction and actually pay attention to what they were seeing (I presume the thing was subtitled, so ears are less relevant here)?
-
I saw Volver and liked it. I liked the fact that this guy tries to rape his girlfriend's teenager daughter, then the teenage daughter kills him with a knife and her mom hides him in a freezer, tells everyone that he left her, and buries the freezer in a remote forest area, and that this is the subplot.
The real plot of the movie is that this same woman, the one who buries the boyfriend in a freezer, who tries to rape her daughter, who kills him with a knife, is looking for her mother. I love Almodovar, especially his early films, but Tim, I'm wondering why it took your gf 6 hours to "watch" this movie. How long would it take her to watch Inland Empire? It took me 5 hours to watch it at the movie theatre and the movie is only 3 hours long. And why does she keep re-heating her food? Who is she, Howard Hughes? :)
-
. . . And why does she keep re-heating her food? Who is she, Howard Hughes? :)
For some reason, this made me laugh and laugh.

That would be a sort of fun nightmare - seeing Inland Empire stoned and not realizing it was ending, so you sit through it three or four times.

Thanks Sarah. Next she'll be demanding banana nut icecream, then "forgetting" to trim her toenails.

Yeah, Jason, like watching endless screenings of "The Last Clean Shirt"

I had to Google that reference. Looks like an interesting project - it also makes me think of all those Warhol movies. Who would be able to tell whether you were watching them on a loop?
-
Yeah, true.
Here's a link for the short film I mentioned. UBUWEB has a lot of experimental stuff on it.
http://www.ubu.com/film/leslie.html
watching it on a computer doesn't have the same imprisoning effect as being stuck in a small screening room.

Weird! I found it on Ubuweb via Google and was reminded how much I liked Ubuweb (haven't been there in a while) so I posted a new thread about it. We must have been there at the same time - possibly the first and oly time two people were viewing that clip at the same time. Thankfully, we didn't crash the site.

Define "did you aim your eyes..." no, I won't push it.
No, I didn't watch it. I watched my girlfriend (who actually "watched" the thing and was pretty bored by it) put it in the Hollywood Express drop box before we rented a couple of other flicks.
I do likes me my subtitled flicks, so long as they are good. Like, say, Matando Cabos (aka Killing Cabos). Or Kieslowski's The Decalogue (or Dekalog). But between the good woman's judgement and the boredom vibes that were coming from the TV set whenever I glanced at it, I realized we just needed to move on in rental land.
-
Isn't that the plot of "I Spit on Your Grave?"
-
I'll probably like it when I finally get a chance to see it. Of course, I may enjoy I Spit on Your Grave, too.
