Title: grammatical errors I dislike
Post by: Sarah on September 25, 2007, 09:31:03 AM
There are many, but the one represented here, "If I would have gone over there, I'd have been killed, or I'd have killed, or I'd kill all the hippies in the foxholes … I would have killed everybody," from the mouth of the immortal Ted Nugent (thanks, Omar, for the link in the recap), is high on my list.

There's also an erroneous use of relative clauses that makes my skin crawl whenever I encounter it.  My aversion is so extreme that I construct an example with great difficulty--my brain flinches at re-creating the travesty--but it's something like, "I went to the store, which I didn't want to do it."

Here is an actual blog entry of mine from a few months ago. I think of it as a reference tool.

Quote
They're
They are. Such as "They're full of crap."

Their
Possessive. Such as "I yanked their chains."

There
A place. Such as "The dictionary is over there."

You're
You are. Such as "You're being pretentious."

Your
Possessive. Such as "Please keep your weiner in your pants. Thanks."

Then
Subsequently. Such as "Then I posted an obnoxiously condescending blog."

Than
Comparative. Such as "I'd rather have hairy arms than a unibrow."*

LOL
Laugh out loud. Such as... such as nothing. You should never use this term. Ever.

The one that gets my goat the most is more of a punctuation thingie: people meaning to make a noun plural and adding apostrophe-"s" instead of just plain "s". And it's everywhere, too! People need to get with it.

i just remembered one!

senior year of college this guy made an announcement about the yearbook. he said, "there are a lot of grammical errors, -- sorry about that."

i almost died! worse yet, when i joked about it to some friends they were like "no, grammical is right" and i was like "what the heck is going on? has the world gone mad!?! and i had to go & look it up and felt loads better when i found out i was right after all. *phew*
