Title: Unfair Record Review Request
Post by: dave from knoxville on October 26, 2007, 08:48:13 AM
I would love to hear Tom doing real-time commentary on Harry Shearer's new CD. I believe that he would give language to the feelings that I experience that my abject terror will not allow me to articulate.

Also, as is so often the case, I thought of the answer to the question "Which commercial would be better suited as a TV series", two days after the show ran. I believe the answer is "Apply directly to the forehead."

I'd like to hear Unfair Record Reviews of any or all of the following:

Iron & Wine
Calexico
PJ Harvey
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek

Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek

aw, this would just break my heart.
Tom can do the Modest Mouse covers cd. other than that, leave Kozelek alone!

From my first impression, Tom could do a fair record review of the new Levon Helm CD and it would probably be hilarious.

I love Red House Painters. I also love Calexico and Iron & Wine. Mr. Sam Beam is from Miami. Also, Mike McGonigal was the first person to put out his music.

Just to clarify, I kinda like Sun Kil Moon and I like some of Kozelek's solo stuff (specifically the AC/DC covers album). I just think it'd be funny to hear Tom take the stuff apart because, let's face it, Kozelek kinda makes himself an easy target for mockery.

Battles, Babyshambles, Kings Of Leon, whatever is the newest Mars Volta/Coheed and Cambria pothead garbage.

Okay, clearly you're not down with prog-leaning bands, but Battles has no rightful place on your list. That record is the jam.

Au contraire, I own and will listen to the Battles albums and EPs. I just think, like most proggy bands, that they take themselves way too seriously, and that they tend to drop the ball and meander into noodly wankery.

They're also the band that perfectly bridges the gap between decent, respectable hard working rock and the Mike Patton/Zappa/Zorn/Buckethead world personified by the Angry Mr. Bungle Fan. It's a connection that should be noted.

It's always especially neat to hear Tom tear into something you actually like, in my experience.

I've tried to like Tom Waits before.

Tom Waits just needs an editor.  He's one of these guys that has some good songs, some bad, and he can't seem to tell the difference.  Stephin Merritt is the same way. But Rain Dogs is one of my favorite albums.

Tom S. has said that he likes Radiohead, who are the worst band ever.  Except when they invented electronic music.  Them and Bjork.

Spot on about Robert Pollard.  I am always suspicious of the quality control of the overly prolific.

My particular animus against Radiohead is in part caused by the fact that nearly every person on the Internet loves them.  Meanwhile, their music is boring and unoriginal.  Remember when Perry Farrell released a drum and bass album?  Radiohead are a slightly more successful version of that.

Pretty much everybody in reality likes Radiohead. It's not like they're the Ron Paul of current music. Listen to OK Computer or Amnesiac a little more closely and tell me it's unoriginal.

I've listened to every Radiohead album relatively closely, including the new one.  They're just awful.  Boring, indie prog rock with uninteresting IDM touches.

At least Bjork just went and *hired* people from the electronic music world to create her albums for her.  Radiohead just copies.  No that there's anything wrong with copying.  But it's just that they're not particularly good at it.  Their music is so lifeless sounding.

Unlike Perry Farrell's flirtation with drum and bass, choosing to copy sounds from Aphex Twin and so on at least exhibits better taste in music.  What I hear in Radiohead is not good music, but the result of a good music collection.

Edit:  Dr. Thorpe says it best, as usual: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/your-band-sucks/radiohead-sucks.php

Yeah, Radiohead's real proggy, the way they don't even have a song over five and a half minutes long and everything is verse-chorus-verse. Why do you keep bringing up Bjork and Perry Farrell? neither of them sound like eachother or Radiohead at all.

Feud over on my end, ok?

Perry Farrell sets the benchmark for awful music, hands down. Everything from Jane's Addiction through today....just unlistenable garbage.

When you end up having a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote above what you write, it kind of defeats the purpose of the "quote" feature.  You may as well just type a reply and take it on faith that a truly invested reader will read all or most of the posts that precede your posts.

That's my 2 cents on this issue.

No shame in the "liking ELO" game, Dave!
As far as Elf goes...  I guess that depends on how you feel about Ronnie JAMES Dio:

Spot on about Robert Pollard.  I am always suspicious of the quality control of the overly prolific.

My particular animus against Radiohead is in part caused by the fact that nearly every person on the Internet loves them.  Meanwhile, their music is boring and unoriginal.  Remember when Perry Farrell released a drum and bass album?  Radiohead are a slightly more successful version of that.

Indubitably!

I disagree with some points, agree with others.

When you end up having a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote above what you write, it kind of defeats the purpose of the "quote" feature.  You may as well just type a reply and take it on faith that a truly invested reader will read all or most of the posts that precede your posts.

Robert Pollard needs an editor, Tom Waits needs a new singer and some decent clothes.

Your Radiohead comments elude me.

Tom Waits also needs some face cream.

No, I meant Guinness sponsoring Barney because of his use of the Harp symbology (which I know is actually significant to the Irish and not a trademark, so don't get mad at me, black men of Britain).

Very astute in terms of corporate hierarchy, as well - they're both (Guinness and Harp, that is) owned by the same mega-alcohol company, DIAGEO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diageo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diageo).

And I have a vague memory that the company is owned by a very right-wing Irish Protestant with close ties to the Tories, or at least it was - maybe The Baffler wrote about it in the 90s?

I do sometimes like Guinness, though.

In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if Barney was referencing the beer trademark and not the Irish national musical instrument - product placement would seem right at home in his work.

Absolutely.
I can't drink Guinness ('cause it ain't v-e-g-a-n), but DIAGEO also own Bushmills, which has been notorious over the past couple of... centuries (?) for not hiring C-a-t-h-o-l-i-c workers.  That's why I roll Jamesons style.
I once walked up to a bar that's not there anymore in Boston and ordered a Jamesons.  A group of Irish guys in flat caps and cable knits (seriously!) approached me and said, "Eh - whatchye gawt dehr?  Bushmills?"  I said, "Fuck no!  Jamesons!"  They looked at each other with steely and pointed eyes and replied, "Oh yeh?  Good man, good man - we'll be singin' some o' the auld songs later on - ye should stick aroound."  I gave them a "Cheers!" and politely excused meself out the door (and ran down the street)...

That's no good.  No more Bushmills for me, not like I was drinking it a lot anyway.  What animal products are in Guinness?  The wife and I are thinking of going veggie, which is a big step for us.

This is not a very good story: Danny Manley, my old college roommate and current frequent collaborator and maybe just maybe part of (never mind I'm not going to talk about it) looks like he just stepped off the boat, even though he's a Jersey guy all the way.  He showed up at my wedding in Indiana 6 hours late, sleep-deprived, and completely wired on Red Bull (he drove all night and got lost; the best quote of the whole wedding was his: "I wept in a gas station men's room, but I was so caffed-up that I could only shed a single tear").  My wife's uncle, the retired judge who married us, had just gotten back from a couple of weeks in Ireland.  He was pretty loaded by then, and kept talking to Danny in a bad Irish accent.  Danny kept trying to explain that he was from Bergen County, but Uncle Chad was hearing none of it - but then Chad broke into a series of old Irish ballads and Danny started sung along, knowing every single word by heart.  It actually looked involuntary, like a Pavlovian response.

Guinness, like a lot of beers, uses isinglass, a substance derived from fish bladders, in the clarification process.
Sometimes I will admit to following a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to wine and beer, but if you're interested, here's a partial list of "safe" brands:  http://www.veganconnection.com/veganbeer.htm

Guinness tastes like ass. I drink Yuengling because it's kind of spicy and Blue Moon because it's kind of fruity. I'm a girl. Oh, and if neither of those are available, which is often the case in Miami, I get Heineken, because that's the only fucking option. I'm not drinking Budweiser.

Interesting about the isinglas.  Hell, interesting to learn that meaning of isinglass (I was only familiar with the mica variation).  I think you should host a regular feature, "Ask a Vegan," to clear up these matters for the ignorant among us (such as I).  For example, there's my french fry question of a while back: why are they not vegan as long as they're cooked in a vegetable oil?

I think you should have stayed in that bar, though.  Could have been great.

Paul?  I think this thread is very close to a regular conversation, which means that it's about anything, everything, and nothing.

Oh yeah - the french fry thing - I think my question was how they fit into the macrobiotic diet, not whether they were vegan or not.  Macro is something I can never fully get my head around - I mean, the concept makes complete sense, but what "is" and what "isn't" gets a little muddled for me sometimes.
As far as the Irish bar goes...  I mean - hey - I love the "auld songs" as much as anyone, maybe more - but I felt like it would have eventually come out that, although I will gladly make a chioce of whiskey based on relative corporate values, I'm entirely sick of sectarian bullshit everywhere, and therefore unwilling to condone the violence that was supremely evident in their eyes, and therefore could easily have wound up on the receiving end of it at some point later in the evening...
And therefore might not be here chatting with the fine likes of you!

Robert Pollard needs an editor, Tom Waits needs a new singer and some decent clothes.

Your Radiohead comments elude me.

Tom Waits also needs some face cream.

When you end up having a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote within a quote above what you write, it kind of defeats the purpose of the "quote" feature.  You may as well just type a reply and take it on faith that a truly invested reader will read all or most of the posts that precede your posts.

That's my 2 cents on this issue.

I'm pretty sure the curators at the Met haven't bought any Matthew Barney crap. That's more of a MOMA/Whitney/WAC sort of thing.

No, I meant Guinness sponsoring Barney because of his use of the Harp symbology (which I know is actually significant to the Irish and not a trademark, so don't get mad at me, black men of Britain).

Listen to OK Computer or Amnesiac a little more closely and tell me it's unoriginal.[/u]

I've listened to every Radiohead album [/glow] relatively closely, including the new one.  They're just awffrom

I seriously admire the persistence, Dave. Oh, and Matt, what does the new Mars Volta sound like? The last two records, I'm guessing?

Out of curiosity I visited Amazon's page for the Harry Shearer Grammy Nominated CD (http://www.amazon.com/Songs-Pointed-Pointless-Harry-Shearer/dp/B000RIWAX0).

The reaction skews towards the not so hot.  So anyway dave, there are non-Tom reviews out there, for what it's worth.  Not the same thing, I know.

Oh boy, hearing him do that would just make my day. Please Tom, just one quip about Mars Volta! If you do the review, please don't play their music though.

I loved that record, and I think they're a great band.

But it would be pretty funny to hear Tom's take on it.

You can do your own version of it. The entire thing is basically Graceland if it was written by Peter Bjorn & John with many many references to rich people things/problems.

How about that Vampire Weekend.

This needs to happen.  You know why?  Because I haven't looked at this thread in a month, I heard Vampire Weekend on the radio yesterday, and I thought "Tom NEEDS to unfair record review these guys" and then I come to this thread and I'm apparently already 13 days late in getting my request in!  In a parallel universe where Tom can do toilet talk, the obvious zinger: "Who gives a fuck about 'Who gives a fuck about an oxford comma?'"
