I'm heading to the record fair for the first time and hoping to meet up with some FOTs there. I'm swamped, so I'll probably just stop by on an afternoon, but if Emily or Stan or any other NJ/NY folk know when you're going, it would be fun to hook up...
-
I'll know tomorrow for certain, but I'm shooting for Sunday.
-
I'm definitely doing Sunday too, would love to slap hands with you guys.
-
Cool, Sunday works for me. I have somewhere to be around 6pm, but that's pretty close to the end. Stan I've met, and I'd probably recognize Forrest from your stand-up, so unless one or both of you develops some nutty facial hair or gets cosmetic surgery, I'll see you on Sunday... mid-afternoonish?
-
Mid-afternoonish it is. I was thinking of going from, say, noonish til the endish.
-
Last year I went all three days and I think that was too much. I'll probably be there Saturday and maybe Sunday.
-
This will be my first record fair. I can't picture how big it is. Will we all have trouble spotting each other?
-
I think Emily is working the info booth. Maybe we can arrange to leave notes for each other there? This is my first record fair too but I don't think the venue is like the Javits Center or Madison Square Garden anything.
-
Nice. It'll be like a little FOT scavenger hunt.
-
I will be wearing a face mask of my avatar. I suggest you all do the same.
-
I'll be there Sunday hopefully.
-
Forrest, I'm going to need to see a full-size jpeg of your avatar. THANKS.
-
Oh, if only I were rich. Hey, maybe Laurie's dad will charter me up!
-
I will be there Sunday. I will not be stopped.
-
I WISH I was going. ...and Lexie Mountain Boys are playing. I'm friends with them!! >:(
-
I'm sorry for not organizing anything now. How about informal drinks around 6 or 7ish on the Sunday?
-
I'm up for something on sunday!
-
Did we all notice that the Cherry Blossom Clinic is broadcasting from the record fair?
-

I've got to figure out where I found that sucker. I figured a cute cat would force people to be nice to me.

Yes. Is there a where?

Jason, I know you just had a baby and have been having stress-related panic attacks and were harassed by overzealous law enforcement officers, but really, man, that's no excuse for not taking charge and getting a whole bunch of disorganized slackers that you mostly know via the internet to meet in one place for drinks. Priorities, sir, priorities.
I have to do this goddam theater lab from 5:30-9ish in midtown so I'll probably bail on the drinks (sob) unless it goes a bit later, in which I'd be happy to meet up with you cats. Maybe we can hatch a plan at the fair? There are pubs galore in Chelsea, most of which are probably pretty empty on Sunday nights.
-
Oh, and this should go without saying, but if I do wind up going out with you guys I am good for a beer for Jason, who I do not think should have to pay for any drinks that night.
-
What's a theater lab?
-
This will be my first record fair too.
I'll be wearing a Captain's Donuts shirt.
-
What's a theater lab?
We vivisect actors. Not even PETA minds. Zing*.
Basically, when I write a new play, or part of it, I want to hear what it sounds like out loud, so I bring it to a bunch of actors and have them read it, then everyone talks about it. Every playwright in America belongs to at least one of these, and it's usually how we get to know each other. "Lab" is a goofy and inaccurate term, but I think it's supposed to evoke the idea that everyone is there to experiment with unfinished work.
*I know I can do better but last night was our official opening and I'm hung over. Also I like actors.
-
Now I really want to go on Friday at 8 to play rock/paper/scissor with Andy Breckman.
All FOTs that are going should wear a Best Show pin.
-
What would "formal drinks" be?
-
What would "formal drinks" be?
I don't know, martinis? Small $14 cocktails made from blueberry infused vodka?
-
Anyone attending Cheery Blossom Clinic Live? If so we should dance.
-
You guys should DANCE LIKE NOBODY'S WATCHING.
-

Some friends and I are planning on being around for this! I've got long brown hair and glasses and will have a "Wait, whuuuut?" button somewhere on my person, as usual.
-
You guys should DANCE LIKE NOBODY'S WATCHING.
Since I won't be attending the fair, I'll just do some angry dancing while no one is watching.
-
What is the secret FOT handshake? I'm not going to be the creepy guy whispering "Wait, whut" out of the corner of my mouth.
-
What is the secret FOT handshake?
Just simply tap three times on the bottom of the men's room stall partition.

I succeeded in totally creeping out Tom!

Forrest, I told you to read the safety manual on that zinging machine before you went and zung yourself. I hope you have insurance.
I'll be wearing a Best Show pin and otherwise doing my best to look like my photo.
-
I'll be there at around 2:00 PM.
-
Stan and Emily, good to see you, and Bobo, great to finally meet you. You're as funny in person as you are in the boards and the chat, and I do mean that as a compliment, not in the Ronald-Reagan-was-as-good-a-president-as-he-was-an-actor way. Jason and Forrest, sorry to miss you guys. Jason, I will someday purchase a beer and give it to you to drink.
Did anyone go out? I could barely stay awake during the theater lab, which had more to do with exhaustion than the material being read, so I just headed home.
-
The meet up didn't happen, so you didn't miss out Lamont (this moniker really does come in handy so as not to confuse the alpha Jason).
I took not one, but two pictures.

Jason and Petey (who really does exist), so who got James'd now?

i did talk to Tom and Fluxblog for a while tho. Tom's thinking about letting him out of the Hatepit, if anyone cares.

I popped into the Record Fair on Sunday for a bit and got to powwow with some FOTs in "Meatspace". It was such a delight to experience firsthand:
-Groteface Killah !
-The Irascible Stan!
-Emily The Artist!
-Breeder Extraordinaire/ Enemy of the State Jason!
-Listener Hour Tour-de-force/ Trivia Mistress Therese!
-Current D.A.R.E. posterboy Petey!
plus: The fellow responsible for 50% of August's DNA!
-
-The Irascible Stan!
Paul Higgins!
GRAAAAAAACE!!!!
-
Aw geez, I was so there, but was greeted with a feeling of helplessness when I walked into the pavilion. So many people. So many bad records to sift through. I hope you guys had fun, because I left with no new records and no new friends.
-
Sorry, Forrest. I really did look for you, if it's any consolation.
I have absolutely no room in my place for anything else at all, and I fear that if I ever started collecting records it would be some sort of nerd point of no return (I'm already up to my eyeballs in croos-platform nerd-dom: comic books, poetry and fiction, TV, sci-fi, alt-comedy, mp3s, the internets, and the dorkiest passion maybe ever - theater) but I love to look at LPs and pretend that I had a spare room and a lot of disposable cash to start the hobby. I did get a Sonics CD and some WFMU and Norton Records swag, though.

What day were you there, Paul? I wonder if our Sunday plan made Tom decide to attend on a different day in order to dodge us.
-
Considering I used to fly in and spend all weekend at the record fair its pretty poor that now I live so close to it I only managed to get there by 4pm Sunday.
Sorry KTB & Stan that I wasn't more chatty, time was short and there were records to buy.
I spent a bit less than $200, got 3 beers, 18 lps and 38 7"s, mostly bargains and only one record I felt i paid too much for but then I no longer have the advantage of converting prices into pounds and convincing myself that everything is a steal.
Petey bought a Clarence Reid 7" and drank beer.

I'm telling Faffer.
I saw it happen. Please accept my apologies for not photographically documenting that moment.
-
I kind of feel like a grandma, regarding PD. He'll always be nine years old to me. Don't smoke pot, PD! sXe 4 lyfe!
-
Petey's almost old enough to be drafted, for heaven's sake. I wonder how many of us here hadn't had a beer or several by the time sixteen/seventeen rolled around?

I haven't had a beer yet, and fifty is about to roll around.

You, sir, are a rara avis.
