I know it's a little early but is anyone interested this year?
-
I'm in. Laurie, if you get me, can I pretty please have a plane?
-
I'm in. Whoever I get better like beans, rice, and other assorted goodies from my sister's store.
-
sure!
-
I'm in, but I hate beans and I only eat basmati rice.
Lamont, no plane for you.
-
Woah I will do this, I wanna do it I WANNA
-
You do realize that, unless Jason decides to take on the chore (which I imagine doesn't appeal to him too much, what with fatherhood and an impending stay at Guantanamo), someone will have to be responsible for collecting all the names and addresses and matching Santas to Santees?
I call not it!
-
I already got permission to help out this year.
-
Andy already agreed to do this. Its really not as easy as it seems, plus you have to put up with everyone grumbling about it.
If you're not prepared to make the effort don't sign up is all I'll say, its easy to just say yes but then you have to actually go find a gift.
Also, I'm in.
-
Why not use a website to do the matching for you? Seems easier. And then all the person coordinating has to do is collect everyone's email addresses:
http://www.secretsanta.com/
-
I'm in. Get ready to meet my little stocking stuffer.
-
I'm in. Get ready to meet my little stocking stuffer.
I want to thank the person who called in with that gem. I love that it's become a running joke.
-
I'm in. Is it sanitary to mail handburgers through the US Postal Service?
-
i'm in! i admittedly haven't finished reading the "mad money" book i got last year, but the fake mustache that came with it is still hanging on the wall.
-
Laurie said the "L" word, so I'm in.
-
i dont want a hamburger, but ill take my chances.
count me in.

this sounds like an awesome idea
-
anyone have any suggestions from last year (or other experiences) in order to make it better?
The biggest problem I had last year was trying to find something my secret santa would like with the limited knowledge from the board. It's not a problem for some people, but it might be a little more difficult some.

Amazon wish lists are sort of cheesy in this context, but maybe this (or a separate thread) regarding likes and dislikes, the more abstract and esoteric the better? For example, I like the sky, but I dislike commercial air travel (hint hint, Laurie).
That secretsanta.com site that Erika posted also sounds like a great idea, if only to make your life easier.
-
I would like to be counted as "in" please.
-
In, please.
-
Yes, I too would like to be involved in this fun activity.

Well.... if you use one of the websites I suggested they collect people's interests and display them to whomever is assigned to that person.
Plus, I'm sure plenty of folks on here have myspace pages. That's always a way to go with it.
I think it's fun that people have to hunt down what others are interested in via the board, the chat and the recaps.
-
I'm in, I had loads of fun with it last year, although I never did figure out who my secret Santa was, and they delivered their package to my house personally.
-
AWWWWWW YEAH!
Listener T and I are so in.
Where do we sign up?

Welcome home.

i want to do this, but is it ok to hand make stuff to give?
-
i want to do this, but is it ok to hand make stuff to give?
I vote yes. The sentimental value of a cool FOT art project is worth a million of anything I'd have on my Amazon wish list (like I need more books, music, or DVDs).
-
yeah, I envision there not being a monetary value requirement (min or max) attached to the gifts.
-
I say we make it a mandatory no monetary value thing. The gifts have to made or something cool you already own.
-
I'm in and second Jason's idea. No grenades, please.
-
The only things I know how to make are food and sweaters. There's not enough time for me to make someone a sweater--besides, though I wouldn't officially be buying a gift, yarn is pretty damn expensive, especially the kind I prefer--and does anyone really want a box of food from a comparative stranger? As to giving something "cool" I already own, what few possessions I have mostly even I don't like; foisting them on someone else would be downright insulting. Thus, if Jason's suggestion wins the day, count me out.
-
Well, in the usual spirit of anarchic, self-policing conviviality hereabouts, can't we just strongly suggest home-made and/or personally significant gifts, and let the chips fall where they may? This is about fun, after all, and it would be unreasonable to ask Laurie to actually make me a plane.
-
I say: no rules. just be cool about it.
-
Yes please! I hope I get something math related from Dave from Knoxville.
But yes, if cash value is involved I'm out of here.
-
Thank you, Andy. And if it turns out my Secret Santee is the sort who might like a whole bunch of mildewed books or be gutsy enough to enjoy my delicious homemade toffee, I'll be sure to send them as gifts, rather than something specially purchased for the occasion.
-
Jesus, you knuckleheads don't deserve any gifts.
-
As I said to KTB the other day, go to hell, Jason.
-
Yo - can I get in on some of this Satan's Claws action?
-
Thank you, Andy. And if it turns out my Secret Santee is the sort who might like a whole bunch of mildewed books or be gutsy enough to enjoy my delicious homemade toffee, I'll be sure to send them as gifts, rather than something specially purchased for the occasion.
homemade toffee sounds delightful!! Who could argue with that?
-
What about the razor blades, though? And, actually, TL and his ilk would argue, 'cause it's made with butter.
-
I'm in.
-
maybe if you want to spend $ you can spend under 10 otherwise you can make something (not food - because of various dietary restrictions) or give something you already own?
just understand going in that you may buy something worth $10 and receive a priceless homemade gift in return. i don't think anyone would have a problem with that, right?
after all, it's for fun!
-
If I get Jasong, I'm going into debt so I can buy him a plane. Money restrictions be damned!
-
If I get Jasong, I'm going into debt so I can buy him a plane. Money restrictions be damned!
And in return, I shall show up in Lubec wearing tights and holding a megaphone and treat you to the Compleat and Unabridged Works of Mister William Shakespeare: The Solo Show, with original cabaret songs based on the sonnets! A seventy-two hour extravaganza with one ten-minute intermission! I shall give you the rich and magical gift of theater, the fabulous invalid, the gift that won't stop giving even when you want it to! All the critics are saying: bring something to urinate in.
Just kidding everyone, I actually have something totally awesome in mind.
-
What's the timeframe for this? When will we be matched up? How will we get mailing addresses? I have so many questions!!!!!!
-
Last year, Jason collected all the names and addresses, matched us according to some system of his own, and e-mailed the names and addresses of the recipients to the Santas. I got mine on December 5.
-

I didn't hear anything about Jews being included, young lady. ;)
-
What about heathens?
-
I can't imagine anything I would rather have than a mix disc or two of one of you animals' favorite songs. Total cost: 75 cents plus postage.
-
I think I'd like to play as well if I'm not too late. I make good mix CDs, I promise.
-
ok, here's the skinny:
I've set up a Secret Santa group on secretsanta.com. If you want to be included, send an e-mail to me at:
FOTSecretSanta at gmail dot com
In your e-mail to me you should include your name and address. Also, if there is someone that you don't want to be paired with, let me know (i.e. Sarah wants to send food but knows that Jason won't eat food from strangers) When I receive your e-mail, I will send you an e-vite to the SS group. You must register and accept the invitation (RSVP) to participate in this particular gift exchange. On the SS group, you will be able to put suggestions of things that you like into your want-list or you can roll the dice and leave it completely up to the gifter.
Registering for the SS.com group closes Midnight of Monday, Nov 19th. That Tuesday, I will let the software match up the participants and it will dispatch e-mails to all of you letting you know who you are buying for. This should give us all ample reason to go out on Black Friday in search of the perfect gift.
Here is the only thing that I am not sure of: I may not be able to see the pairings after they are generated randomly by the webpage. If I cannot, I will broadcast an e-mail to the group requesting that you e-mail me who you were assigned so that I can get their shipping information to you.
This was a lot of fun last year and I think that it will be again this year. I feel like we have a good enough group of people here that monetary limits are not necessary, just please everyone genuinely try to give a good, meaningful gift. If you want to make something, give something or buy something, just make sure it's special.
-
Just a quick warning to anyone using the site - after you RSVP, it takes you through a few pages of ads that ask for your address, and if you're not paying attention, you might think these are for the site. They're not - I almost ordered a "free" Betty Crocker recipe book by accident, and in doing so would have gotten myself on hundreds of church lady junk-mail lists. Caveat santor.
-
yes, you'll have to "skip" through 3 offers. this is the price we pay for the free service.
-
This is a shambles, I'm withdrawing.
Last year I pulled all the names out of a hat. It was a Santa hat too.
-

Really? Is this a problem for people? If everyone hates the Secret Santa site, maybe it would be worthwhile to do it the old way. Personally I don't care either way, but the more people involved, the more fun it is, obviously...
-
I'm confused: how will I get the address of the person I'm supposed to send a present? Do I PM you after I get the name, Andy?*
By the way, I'm ssto on that Secret Santa site.
*And wouldn't a hat indeed have been way more simple?

My initials, as you probably guessed. Years ago, the receptionist where I worked always misread them "SS20." She was a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists, which explains why she kept on mistaking me for a Soviet nuclear missile.
-
Either way: Send an e-mail with your Name and address to FOTSecretSanta at gmail dot com if you want to participate. I will play with the webpage and make sure our process is good.
-

Actually I had no idea. I thought it was some sort of internet abbreviation, and was mildly surprised that you of all FOT* were using one of those.
*Happy now?
-
Happy now?
It would take more than that, bucko, but thanks.
-
Is Jason really out? I was hoping for souvenirs from his experience with the ahh thor it tays.
You want a real nightmare? How about a FOT white elephant? Boy it would take tons of time.....who do we know that's not working right now?
-

yeah, Sarah, didn't some frrozen haute guy you met in Paris once tell you that you looked like a cosmonaut?
...and you weren't even holding a glass of Tang at the time. What is this association people have with you and spaciness anyway? :)
-
You're right, jane--I hadn't even made that connection (and I can't believe you did; that's a detail from an ancient chat). Perhaps, though, the association is with redness more than spaciness: I think I may also have mentioned at some point that a classmate once told me I looked Latvian, and I've been mistaken for Chinese more than once.
-
And if it turns out my Secret Santee is the sort who might like a whole bunch of mildewed books
I'm just saying.
-
Oh, believe me, Rainer, I've already wished that I'd get your name.
-
You're right, jane--I hadn't even made that connection (and I can't believe you did; that's a detail from an ancient chat). Perhaps, though, the association is with redness more than spaciness:
haha...I'm not sure why I remembered that detail - I usually have a really bad memory for things. Like, I'm rewatching "Twitch City" on DVD and it's like I'm watching the thing for the first time.
I think it's because you mentioned it apropos of nothing Tom or the chatters were discussing. Like you were thinking aloud in the chat - made me laugh.
I tend to remember unexpectedly funny stuff. Like the girl who called in saying she was a key latch kid and didn't have parents around to teach her to snap her fingers, or (and I'm going to attempt approximate on-topicness, here) the one who called in last year confessing she wanted a mink-lined room for Christmas. In any case...

...you'll always be our navigateur de l'infini
-
Quel compliment!(?) But I'm pretty sure I mentioned the "Russian astronaut" (as the guy put it) thing in the context of a discussion--or at least a stray comment--about odd descriptions of oneself that one has encountered over the years. If not--how embarrassing!
-
after i sign up for this thing, i hope i get stan so i can buy him a jitterbug phone.
-
Any chance of Santa dropping a FOT mix tape in many of our stockings?
-
Whoever gets me gets 10 hours of infuriating music. Murray Xmas!

Is this a Murray Wilson reference? Or was it spelled Murry?

I'm frightened and i think we should all get back into Jason's Santa hat.
Jason will not sell the Santa Hat to Rupert Murdoch.
FOTBIKE CULTURE IS NOT FOR SALE!

hey, did my email go through? i didn't get one back. i'm only asking because my email has been acting funny lately, not because i'm impatient.
-
yes, I got it. I'll post a current list tonight.

What if it's consenual? Like is Forrest and I decide to stalk each other. I have a lot on my plate right now, but I'm a fan of his work and I think it might be good for both of our careers.
-
Aw, c'mon, don't tell me I killed the Secret Santa thread. I was just kidding about the stalker thing. Who has time to stalk these days?
-
Who has time to stalk these days?
Oh there's always time for stalking.
-

Spike?
-
Andy, did you get my email?
-
I just went to the site, and the list is still at six participants, where it was a couple of days ago. Am I stuck in the past somehow?
-
How do I sign up for the list?
-
yeah, I've abandoned the website. I got your e-mail Laurie and you've been entered.
-
What's the timeframe for this? When will gifts need to be sent out, etc?
-
Last year, each person just took care of sending out the gift him/herself, to reach the recipient by Christmas. Surely we'll follow that simple course this year as well?
-
[edit - nevermind :D]
-
Screw secret Santa, maybe I will just send an excruciating CD to everyone.
-
Screw secret Santa, maybe I will just send an excruciating CD to everyone.
Hell's Bells! Maybe we'll need to trade you for a "Hip-hop that even Dave from Knoxville could enjoy" disc.
-
You know what? I really liked the Jay-Z song that Tom played at the show opening this week.
-
Will someone please buy me this
crystal pavé diamond skull (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?cmCat=search&itemId=prod35940014)? Thanks!
-
i would like to note that after tasting my friend mary's vegan apple pie the other day, i am willing to use butter substitute in the shortbread if i get a vegan FOT. they've really improved from the icky soy stuff my mom used to give me when i was a kid.
-
Ooh, I love shortbread and do not require a butter substitute.
-
Please let it be noted that I will eat just about anything that is tasty.
And I love butter.
And also cats. But not for eating.
Thank you.
