You do realize that, unless Jason decides to take on the chore (which I imagine doesn't appeal to him too much, what with fatherhood and an impending stay at Guantanamo), someone will have to be responsible for collecting all the names and addresses and matching Santas to Santees?

I call not it!
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa

I already got permission to help out this year.

Andy already agreed to do this. Its really not as easy as it seems, plus you have to put up with everyone grumbling about it.
If you're not prepared to make the effort don't sign up is all I'll say, its easy to just say yes but then you have to actually go find a gift.
Also, I'm in.

Why not use a website to do the matching for you? Seems easier. And then all the person coordinating has to do is collect everyone's email addresses:

anyone have any suggestions from last year (or other experiences) in order to make it better?

The biggest problem I had last year was trying to find something my secret santa would like with the limited knowledge from the board.  It's not a problem for some people, but it might be a little more difficult some.

Amazon wish lists are sort of cheesy in this context, but maybe this (or a separate thread) regarding likes and dislikes, the more abstract and esoteric the better?   For example, I like the sky, but I dislike commercial air travel (hint hint, Laurie).

That secretsanta.com site that Erika posted also sounds like a great idea, if only to make your life easier.

Well.... if you use one of the websites I suggested they collect people's interests and display them to whomever is assigned to that person.

Plus, I'm sure plenty of folks on here have myspace pages. That's always a way to go with it.

I think it's fun that people have to hunt down what others are interested in via the board, the chat and the recaps.

I vote yes.  The sentimental value of a cool FOT art project is worth a million of anything I'd have on my Amazon wish list (like I need more books, music, or DVDs).
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa
Post by: Andy on November 09, 2007, 01:11:51 PM
yeah, I envision there not being a monetary value requirement (min or max) attached to the gifts.
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa
Post by: Jason on November 09, 2007, 01:53:18 PM
I say we make it a mandatory no monetary value thing. The gifts have to made or something cool you already own.

I'm in and second Jason's idea.  No grenades, please.
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa
Post by: Sarah on November 09, 2007, 02:41:28 PM
The only things I know how to make are food and sweaters.  There's not enough time for me to make someone a sweater--besides, though I wouldn't officially be buying a gift, yarn is pretty damn expensive, especially the kind I prefer--and does anyone really want a box of food from a comparative stranger?  As to giving something "cool" I already own, what few possessions I have mostly even I don't like; foisting them on someone else would be downright insulting.  Thus, if Jason's suggestion wins the day, count me out.
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa
Post by: Shaggy 2 Grote on November 09, 2007, 02:45:43 PM
Well, in the usual spirit of anarchic, self-policing conviviality hereabouts, can't we just strongly suggest home-made and/or personally significant gifts, and let the chips fall where they may?  This is about fun, after all, and it would be unreasonable to ask Laurie to actually make me a plane.

just understand going in that you may buy something worth $10 and receive a priceless homemade gift in return. i don't think anyone would have a problem with that, right?

And in return, I shall show up in Lubec wearing tights and holding a megaphone and treat you to the Compleat and Unabridged Works of Mister William Shakespeare: The Solo Show, with original cabaret songs based on the sonnets!  A seventy-two hour extravaganza with one ten-minute intermission!  I shall give you the rich and magical gift of theater, the fabulous invalid, the gift that won't stop giving even when you want it to!  All the critics are saying: bring something to urinate in.

Just kidding everyone, I actually have something totally awesome in mind.

Last year, Jason collected all the names and addresses, matched us according to some system of his own, and e-mailed the names and addresses of the recipients to the Santas.  I got mine on December 5.

Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa
Post by: Andy on November 10, 2007, 12:37:37 AM
ok, here's the skinny:
I've set up a Secret Santa group on secretsanta.com.  If you want to be included, send an e-mail to me at:
FOTSecretSanta at gmail dot com

In your e-mail to me you should include your name and address. Also, if there is someone that you don't want to be paired with, let me know (i.e. Sarah wants to send food but knows that Jason won't eat food from strangers) When I receive your e-mail, I will send you an e-vite to the SS group.  You must register and accept the invitation (RSVP) to participate in this particular gift exchange.  On the SS group, you will be able to put suggestions of things that you like into your want-list or you can roll the dice and leave it completely up to the gifter.

Registering for the SS.com group closes Midnight of Monday, Nov 19th.   That Tuesday, I will let the software match up the participants and it will dispatch e-mails to all of you letting you know who you are buying for. This should give us all ample reason to go out on Black Friday in search of the perfect gift.

Here is the only thing that I am not sure of: I may not be able to see the pairings after they are generated randomly by the webpage.  If I cannot, I will broadcast an e-mail to the group requesting that you e-mail me who you were assigned so that I can get their shipping information to you.

This was a lot of fun last year and I think that it will be again this year.  I feel like we have a good enough group of people here that monetary limits are not necessary, just please everyone genuinely try to give a good, meaningful gift.  If you want to make something, give something or buy something, just make sure it's special.

Post by: Shaggy 2 Grote on November 10, 2007, 02:18:06 PM
Just a quick warning to anyone using the site - after you RSVP, it takes you through a few pages of ads that ask for your address, and if you're not paying attention, you might think these are for the site.  They're not - I almost ordered a "free" Betty Crocker recipe book by accident, and in doing so would have gotten myself on hundreds of church lady junk-mail lists.  Caveat santor.

Really?  Is this a problem for people?  If everyone hates the Secret Santa site, maybe it would be worthwhile to do it the old way.  Personally I don't care either way, but the more people involved, the more fun it is, obviously...

You're right, jane--I hadn't even made that connection (and I can't believe you did; that's a detail from an ancient chat).  Perhaps, though, the association is with redness more than spaciness:  I think I may also have mentioned at some point that a classmate once told me I looked Latvian, and I've been mistaken for Chinese more than once.

haha...I'm not sure why I remembered that detail - I usually have a really bad memory for things.  Like, I'm rewatching "Twitch City" on DVD and it's like I'm watching the thing for the first time.

I think it's because you mentioned it apropos of nothing Tom or the chatters were discussing.  Like you were thinking aloud in the chat - made me laugh.

I tend to remember unexpectedly funny stuff.  Like the girl who called in saying she was a key latch kid and didn't have parents around to teach her to snap her fingers, or (and I'm going to attempt approximate on-topicness, here) the one who called in last year confessing she wanted a mink-lined room for Christmas.  In any case...

That means there might be strangers registering, fraudsters who have nothing to do with this board or the show.

um... no stalkers, please. please?

What if it's consenual?  Like is Forrest and I decide to stalk each other.  I have a lot on my plate right now, but I'm a fan of his work and I think it might be good for both of our careers.

Aw, c'mon, don't tell me I killed the Secret Santa thread.  I was just kidding about the stalker thing.  Who has time to stalk these days?

I just went to the site, and the list is still at six participants, where it was a couple of days ago.  Am I stuck in the past somehow?

What's the timeframe for this? When will gifts need to be sent out, etc?

Last year, each person just took care of sending out the gift him/herself, to reach the recipient by Christmas.  Surely we'll follow that simple course this year as well?

Hell's Bells! Maybe we'll need to trade you for a "Hip-hop that even Dave from Knoxville could enjoy" disc.

You know what? I really liked the Jay-Z song that Tom played at the show opening this week.

i would like to note that after tasting my friend mary's vegan apple pie the other day, i am willing to use butter substitute in the shortbread if i get a vegan FOT.  they've really improved  from the icky soy stuff my mom used to give me when i was a kid.

Ooh, I love shortbread and do not require a butter substitute.

Please let it be noted that I will eat just about anything that is tasty.

And I love butter.

And also cats. But not for eating.

Thank you.
