Well directed use of all that awesome creative energy!
-
FAR OUT......THIS GUY'S SERIOUS.... ???
-
ahhh, this guy's seriously an attention whore.
-
James, I actually sort of came to your defense and said that Tom went overboard in wishing death upon you. Now I'm starting to question myself.
-
compared to this, the whole OT vs Purple Shirt feud was like a scene from the bible. for shame!

Well played Jason, this needs to stay put.
Do the work for 10 years, while working a day job, and then pass a kidney stone. ON THE AIR.
-
"Mr. Lennon?"
BLAM!
-
It's actually kind of sad...
-
James' been JASON'ED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
You are such a creep. As the great Tom would say: "You are creeeepy and I'm hang-ing up on you! BOING!"
-
Guy breaks his Mr T Doll and everything goes to shit.

I'm with swiss on this.
Can't we all just get along *sniff*?

Can't we all just get along *sniff*?
You think we should do rails?
-
They always make me feel better. Why?
-
They don't call me "the conductor" for nothing.
-
I don't do lines, my boy. That's you. I'm drug free and proud of it.
-
You got any?

Can't we all just get along *sniff*?

A few bumps never hurt anyone.................

Yeah... Hosted this on my site. May or may not have helped him with it.

Great second post there, chief.
Of course I'm kidding. We're all about troll enablers.

You, sir, have been zung.

Does SMF have a way to deny by IP?
-
I'd offer some sort of explanation, but James is a strange and insistent dude. With boku free time on his hands.
In the future, nobody will believe what you say on the internet. I think that's a Max Headroom quote or something.
-
I hate James.
-
Good lord, why? Is he important enough to merit hatred? Shit, I don't even hate Stevie Blue, even though I wish he'd never, ever, ever call again. At this rate, I'm going to have to like James just to counterbalance all this exaggerated animosity. That would be tiresome, since I'd much rather persist in my usual indifference.

James just send me this by personal message
"WATCH WHAT SOUNDS COME OUT OF YOUR THROAT SON I WILL SMASH YOU"
I am requesting that Jason both ban him from the board, and give me his IP so that I can call and have a talk with his parents and his local police force.
Thanks

And yikes, Dave, he's harmless. A troll to the nth degree, weird sense of humor, yes, harmless, though. Sorry he's being such a doof.
-
TVD, I don't really care. There's not a jurisdiction in the US that won't take his physical threat seriously. He may be harmless, but I assure you, I am not.
-
I heard the "T" stands for "Transmits".
THANK YOU GOOD NIGHT!

TVD, I don't really care. There's not a jurisdiction in the US that won't take his physical threat seriously. He may be harmless, but I assure you, I am not.
I was fairly certain that the people of this board knew that "James" was a fictitious entity that I concocted. That "physical threat" was an obvious reference to the show. I do however apologize. I should not have assumed that you would have received it with humor.

And with that the ASTization of the FOT is complete, the death knell has been rung.
So farewell then James, you beautiful ghost. You're only crime in my eyes was failing to be funny.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to draw the curtains and sit in the dark for a bit.
-
the ASTization of the FOT is complete
I know that's supposed to be bad, but I don't know what it means.

I know what it means. And I wasn't even around during the Gargoylish days of yore.

I think you're being a jerk.

Guys, can you please keep this thread on-topic? Thanks.

Dave, since it turns out you were James after atll, can I just say how impressed I am at the way you disguised your voice? You, sir, are a gifted thespian. Jasongrote, I'd recruit him, if I were you.

Nice birdhouse, twerps.
-
Yeah, that multiple personality bit was pretty impressive.
In all seriousness, though, some sincere, friendly advice, James? If you're trying to develop a radio or comedy persona of some kind, trying to imitate Tom and Jon's schtick, or (inexplicably) one of the handful of truly loony Best Show callers, is probably not the way to go. Trust me on this. Because - assuming that this is the case, and you are not suffering from actual mental illness - someday you will either succeed at this persona or give the idea up, and you will look back at this misadventure and feel the kind of humiliation that crushes your soul just a little bit. This feeling will never go away.
-
It was never really anything I set out to do, just sort of happened. The podcast/site thing was a swan song.
All the same good advice.
James was a failed experiment that should have never come to fruition.
I'm just going to go back to listening.
maybe a little impersonating tom in the chat though

ugh, I'm already regretting putting that link up. Just look at the purdy layout. Don't listen to the friggin things. And if you do, feel free to flame us. We deserve it :-X

No offense, TVD, but the key word in that sentence was "develop." Doing two podcasts isn't the same thing as doing a broadcast radio show for something like 8 years. Believe me, I've written some truly embarrassing crap, but thankfully none of it ever made it over any kind of airwaves.

I can't say for sure, Swiss, but my guess would be yes. It's a great place to learn how to be both unfunny and a dick.
(They do put out some decent records, though. I'll give them that.)
-
I can't say for sure, Swiss, but my guess would be yes. It's a great place to learn how to be both unfunny and a dick.
It's a little off putting that some of you think that because someone is obnoxious or unfunny or a dick, they automatically have to be from AST. There are quite a few great FOT's that post on AST as well, and while we know you're not directly talking to us, it still gets old. I know we've all had this conversation before, but how much more do we have to prove ourselves? A troll is a troll, regardless of where they came from first. We don't want trolls on AST either.
I really love both sites, and a lot of people from both sites, and it just sucks to feel like you guys may consider all of us inconsiderate assholes. I'm not trying to cause drama by any means - that's the last thing I want.

Here's the thing I don't get about the AST members* who post here: The fact that isn't you that some of us don't like about that board. It's the raging douchenozzles (who in all fairness seem ubiquitous in online forums) over there who probably bother you as well (they are the reason I only lurk there on occasion). I can't think of an AST member who I've had any issue with on this board, unless James'd came from there. So really, it isn't you.
One love.
*I called you members.
-
they are the reason I only lurk there on occasion
stan, you lurk over there to read the negative parts of the board? just to see the trolls and few jerky people? seeking out the negative aspects of AST?
if that's the case, awesome.

I wish I was that creepy, but no. There's loads of great information on AST, but if I posted there I would just end up endlessly typing in anger. I choose to not do so.

I appreciate you saying that, and you have valid points. All I can say is that.. I know I'm not on AST saying that FOT produces douche nozzles because of Cp. J, and James. And I know that none of the other AST members who post here are either. It's just kind of unecessary to always throw in the AST name when somebody rude comes along.

I've never been to AST, so I love everyone except "James".

At the risk of fanning flames, this is what I wrote to Dorvid yesterday when he asked me about Jason's comment: "I'm pretty sure I'm right in thinking that by 'astification' he means people being too prickly, taking things too seriously, and overreacting to posts that are not worth fussing about." I'm sure we can come up with a less divisive term to describe this phenomenon.
-

Freezerburnification.
Becuase I hate freezer burn, I don't know. I mean why can't my freezer treat foods and goods with respect?
-
Can we go back to making fun of James now?
-

And it's true, there are people who take things too seriously. And maybe this is one you guys will consider taking too seriously here. But after seeing it again and again, I couldn't not say anything about it when I know I am not the only one who thinks it's getting old. Yeah, go ahead and hate on James now. Sorry for distracting from that.
-
I say "freezerburnification" it is.
-
Um...I was initially making what I call a joke. Not at anyone's expense, just at the expense of a website. A website. No reason for anyone to get their feelings hurt.
UPDATE: I have kept my original post intact, but have been informed that it was passive-aggressive. My sincerest apologies. I perhaps got a bit too touchy.

I honestly am not trying to step on any toes, at all. I just thought it should be at least known how a couple of us feel about it. It's not like my feelings are hurt or anything like that.
-
I ain't gonna be mad at a fellow cat-avatarist.

This is pretty accurate. I did mean that there's a general slide towards an AST-like state, not that AST posters were posting here. Like I've said before, the FOT is for everyone.
-
I honestly think my brain just exploded. It's still the lamest thing ever, joke or no joke.

How about coming up with a term not involving "AST" (I like the freezer burn one...) to avoid making ASTers feel unwelcome on this board?
By insulting one of my favorite things in the world (AST) you're kinda insulting me. I can't help but take it a little personally. Just as there are many posters here who would take it personally if people started insulting the FOT board left and right.

or brought up veganism
-
I know I'm the one who originally posited the possibility of a non-
AST-specific term, but if we start down that road, we could end up with a glossary that new FOT would have to study before posting. Why formalize anything? People will be considerate or not; even with a how-to manual on how to be a good little FOT, those who wish to offend will find ways to do so. I'd rather fight my own battles that have to follow a bunch of rules that make everything cushier but more bland.
-
OK Sarah -- here's what I'm saying in different terms.
Please, everyone on this board, please know that if you insult AST, there are posters on this board that will take it personally. This individual poster is asking, to make it a more pleasant place for her, that the FOTs not insult AST every chance they get. If you decide to go for it, cool. But I'm gonna be pissed.
I didn't mean for my post to come across as a rule. It's a request.
-
I didn't mean for my post to come across as a rule. It's a request.
Of course I know that, erika. But, in defense of non-AST FOT (of which I consider myself one, despite the fact that I, relatively recently, registered on the AST board), may I say that it's hardly true that "the FOTs . . . insult AST every chance they get." I believe our lord and master Jason is the only one who does this regularly. And, as far as I'm concerned, he could do whatever he wants even if he weren't god of the board.
-
As an AST guy who occasionally visits the FOT board I have to agree the ragging does get old. Even S&W hung up the Mawky Ramone bit once that got old. (edit: Although it never stops being funny)
But honestly, I have a hard time seeing where the criticisms come from. My only guess is that some FOT were turned off by the whole kerfuffle involving the previous AST poll. Otherwise, I find the two boards are rather similar, and there's no reason to be hatin'.
Most of the posts are from regulars, and most of the regulars are lovely folks to talk to. Whenever you come across posters who are real jerks, they also have like 12 posts to their name. They're barely representative of the board (just like I'm barely a member of the FOT board with my 20-some posts). Just some mutants who visit for a few weeks, spew their nonsense and leave.
As always there is the occasional douchey poster who is tenacious enough to stick with it. But I find they're way, way outnumbered by quality posters.
For new members I know the regulars can be kind of prickly at first. It's a defense mechanism to weed out the riff-raff. Way back when, my first few posts on AST were met with a few snarky comments. In hindsight I made some really dumb posts, so I had it coming. Instead of being turned off it just reinforced the idea that should get a "sense of the room" before becoming a regular poster.
-
Surely if even I'm sick of talking about AST on this board, the rest of you should be running out of steam.
As Tom would say, come on - this is America.
(I'm not really buying this new healthier attitude of mine, either.)
-
board war?

You know who I can't stand? Vegan Ron Paul supporters who post on AST. Andy, how about a high-stakes game of Jarts?

Aha, thanks. Any reason for the name change?

Hey, I've already passed up five opportunities in this thread alone.
-
Aha, thanks. Any reason for the name change?
Nope. It rules, is all.
-
I'm not going to refrain from comparing something to something else because it might offend someone. When people disagree on AST it often results in arguments and insults, we had our fair share of that here in the past but I think for at least a couple of years we've all fostered an atmosphere where disagreements result in discussion and, at worst, zingers. I see us slipping from the latter to the former and I think the comparison is valid and I stand by it.
I freely admit I have ragged on AST but I assure you, for the most part, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I did so. Even over the stupid asterisk incident, which I still think was pathetic, even when I was being serious I did my best to express my displeasure by trying to be funny.
When Captain Jack was banned from the show we all spontaneously joined in, Captain Jack's name was never to be mentioned again. Apparently there was some confusion as to whether this was sycophancy or a joke (it was both) but its fitting and telling that that discussion took place not here but on AST. As we all know it devolved into a shit-storm.
I could of course use any site where this sort of thing happens as an example, AST is just a convenient reference point with perhaps some residual asterisk ragging thrown into the mix. It pains me that I even have to explain this.
I'm not singling anybody out here, but people really are taking stuff way too seriously and being way too sensitive.
It has just occurred to me that nov 19th saw our five year anniversary. I can't speak for Tom but as far as I am concerned, and I was here from day one, this site, the membership card and the whole Friends of Tom thing was and is an irreverent take on fan sites and fan clubs. A unique extension of the grand human comedy that Jon and Tom weave and as fans of the show we are lucky to have it and should all do our best to keep it fun.
Without wishing to denigrate my forebears, there was a time when people were banned for disagreeing with the moderators political opinions or for not posting about Tom enough. Somewhere down the line we flourished into a pretty cool community, we send each other stuff, meet up and stay at each others houses. Usage and traffic has gone through the roof and god knows its not because I've done anything great with the site, which is after all just this forum. The success of this site is down to the people who use it and I fear that they will also be the ones who destroy it, at least with me around because if I did have any part in that success it's because I am a hands-off, laissez-faire moderator.
I am therefore horrified that anyone would think of me as "Lord and Master". I've only ever had to ban two people, and they really stepped over the line, I think I have only ever laid down the law twice (both times when I thought someone was being ganged up against and not because I agreed with them) and Tom has only ever asked me to delete three things (and two of them were by me). So there will be no new rules, nobody will be banned, no ips given out and no threads will be locked simply because somebody asks for it. I will step in if neccessary but there have been no rules except common sense during my tenure and it has worked pretty well, even if I do now have to remind you all of your individual responsibility.
I'm not fishing for compliments, so don't start. If you want to thank anyone thank Tom who pays for this site out of his own pocket, but to my mind (again I do not speak for Tom) the best way you can thank him is by stopping all this shit-posting.
Don't take things too seriously, discuss stuff instead of arguing and if you're going to put someone down at least try and be funny about it. Continue to make this forum the kind of place that attracted you to it in the first place and maybe one day I'll get around to finishing the mix tape.

Thank you for that post Jason. It was well thought out and nicely put.
I stopped the conversation early because I know it's not THAT big of a deal. And I know you may not be directly referring to me, but I don't think I'm being overly sensitive by asking politely that everyone consider the possibility of a troll being home-grown, or from somewhere other than AST. When people insinuate that the posters there suck, since I'm one of those people, I honestly feel like you may be referring to me or making some sort of veiled remark about those of us from AST who post here. I guess it's just about wanting to feel accepted here.
I really, really love this board, the people involved, and the Best Show on WFMU. It truly is one of those things that has come along in my life and can't be replaced, along with the community here.
-
I would just like to point out to all of our AST posters that when I talk ill of that board, I'm not talking bad about you, just about your friends.

Hey guys! Come on over to AST - we'll be glad to have you. The best way to make AST better is to contribute! http://aspecialthing.com/smf/index.php?action=register
(If it needs saying, I'm completely sincere. If you enjoy comedy enough to want to discuss it at all, you should give AST an honest chance. Looking forward to approving some new accounts; keep an eye on your junk mail if you do register, though, because occasionally the activation emails end up there.)

This (http://aspecialthing.com/smf/index.php?topic=6934.0) is a helpful thread for anyone who wants to explore the wonders of AST...
