Filming a young Sparks movie w/ use of time machine: yes.

Filming old Sparks movie today: not so much.

They did put out some killer records once upon a time.

They've actually been putting out some incredible stuff lately.  Not the typical 40-years-in garbage that most dinosaur bands have put out in their twilight years.  Their last two albums might be my favorite of theirs.  And no, I'm not a blind fan (http://markprindle.com/sparks.htm (http://markprindle.com/sparks.htm)) and yes this is completely off topic.

I agree, except for the part where you said it was off-topic.

Is it just me or do all good bands get really terrible in the 80's?

Coincidentally, I just so happen to be listening to the new Wire ep (Read and Burn 3), which, unlike a lot of their 80s output, is quite good.

But man, so many great bands got SO bad in the 80's, is it just a production trend or what?  Not just Sparks, but Bowie, John Cale, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder, Jesus, too many to name.  You look at so many bands' allmusic pages and the *'s take a nosedive right at ~1985.

Mark Prindle used to hang out in my dorm room in college.  He was friends with my roommate, who introduced me to Rock, Rot and Rule.

He was what you'd call a wacky guy.  He, in fact, wrote a column for the college newspaper called "Look at Me, I'm Wacky."

Whoops, should've made that clearer.  I'm not Prindle.  He has the best Sparks review page on the net, funny and accurate.  He's introduced me to more good music than pretty much anyone else.

Edit:
That's awesome, buffcoat.

I thought there was a pretty good investigation into the advent of '80's crappiness in Shakey.  I think part of it was new recording technologies, pressure from the industry to change and adapt and buy into the "future" of music (probably because keyboards are cheaper than orchestras) and a wholesale throwing out of a lot of methodologies that were working just fine up to that point (kinda like libraries throwing out card catalogues in the nineties and then wanting to self-immolate when their computers crashed for the first time.)  Also, I feel like boomer bands, like boomers in general, got swept up in the $$ and the conservativism of the era.  Then AIDS made everything weird.  I seriously blame crappy early digital stuff for a lot of it, though.  And I feel like punk/new wave was so dismissive and destructive for older bands.  People like Jimmy Page were just getting zonked on heroine and trying to imitate punkers who hated him, while still maintaining the bloated superstardom of Led Zep.  People trying to be too many things to too many people, "Not getting it" anymore, making too much money for their own good, etc.  A lot of good bands STARTED in the eighties, though.

Never read shakey, but those all seem like viable reasons.  The weird thing for me is, I like a lot of early electronic music, like Kraftwerk, Sparks' FIRST digital album #1 in Heaven, the Normal, early Residents, Eno.  It's like they all go these fancy new machines and decided to base their entire songwriting method on them.  So much of the 80's stuff is so dated I can't even listen to it (PRINCE), despite supposedly being good.  I was only 5 when the 80's came to a close, so I guess I didn't get to experience things first-hand.

Actually, N.Young complains about Prince ruining the one good reverb chamber in America by revamping it for the digital age... or something.

There totally is a Sparks movie. It's called "Rollercoaster" and it stars George Segal and the kid from Paper Chase (I think). There is a scene in an amusement park where Sparks is playing a song. It's a great movie.
