Title: We ruin Father Ted

I find the actor funny but wow is this going to be a bad idea. I can see it now Ashton Kutcher as Father Dougal, and Chevy Chase as Father Jack.

How, in the name of all that is good and holy (moley), do they think they're gonna pull this off????  This is America - every friggin' episode's gonna have to end with some treacly "moral."  What's Father Jack gonna spit out when he needs his alcoholic fix, "Drat?"  And beyond the specifics of this particular shameless episode, why do we always have to do this - remake things - all kind of things, I mean?
Train wreck.

Quote
Higgins himself is dubious "The English have a very robust history of being unkind about religion. We don't have that in our country, we're frightened of it. It's basically that you guys are doing an Irish joke also, we don't have that. So I'll be Father Ted, we'll see how it goes."

Exactly why this won't succeed, even if it somehow doesn't end up resembling License to Wed.  The article doesn't specify whether or not this is for network tv, but if it gets picked up the Catholic League will protest it for some specious reason before it even airs, it'll run for a couple of weeks, then be forgotten.

That's very upsetting. There's been talk of this for as long as I can remember (wasn't Steve Martin gonna play Ted at some stage?), but "Shooting is scheduled to begin in January" is almost apocalyptic.

Fuppin grassholes.

More positively, I met the writers a couple of nights ago and they were so funny and lovely, but a nicer man than Mr. Linehan (http://www.whythatsdelightful.wordpress.com) ne'er have I met.

Best Linehan appearance? Episode 2 of Black Books: his "I heart Books" t-shirt.

I've never seen Black Books.  :(

3) The exec in the "No way you big spastic, you're a mentalist!" episode of Alan Partridge.
2) Darkplace - "Look at that poor man. Not only has he just been screwed by a giant eye, he's now giving birth."
1) Fr. Ted - Flight Into Terror - "Should we not just have a bit of an aul pray? I mean... maybe god will help us?"

I think I remember him popping up in Big Train as well..

That Catholic League article erroneously mentions the BBC 9 times, Father Ted was made by an independent company and broadcast on the (non-BBC) Channel 4.

Anyway, while checking that on Wikipedia I came across this -

"It is probable that the name of the seminary known as St. Columb's, which Ted and a number of other priests in the show attended, was influenced by the name of St. Columb's College in Derry, Northern Ireland, of which Seamus Cassidy, a Channel 4 producer, was a past-pupil."

I had to laugh because Seamus Cassidy was in fact the Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 not "a producer".

I dare not delve deeper into this miasma of mis-information.

I thought this, too, but I think all the BBC references had to do with BBC America, who were bringing the show to the U.S.

First sentence second paragraph.

"One of the most popular current situation comedies broadcast by the BBC in the British Isles..."
