Title: Friends of Tom Listening Party!
Post by: iceberger on December 05, 2007, 07:52:47 PM

All friends of Tom are cordially invited to listen to The Best Show at Quimby's Bookstore each and every Tuesday night. We figure, we're listening to Tom anyway, so why not enjoy the laffs with other FOTs above the age of 18 ::). To sweeten the pot, we will even offer a 10% discount on all items to any FOT who brings the mojitos.

You're a ghost!!

This is awesome and makes me wish I still lived in Chicago.
You want props, Quimby's?  I'll give you props.

Thanks Dorvid!!

Let's lay down a few "ground rules" for the next The Best Show Listening Party At Quimbys on Tuesday, January 18.

This is not a listening PAR-TAY!! It's a bookstore that happens to have Tom on the radio; if you like Tom, and like to browse books, you're welcome to join the staff here (Logan, Brian, Liz) as we laff along with The Best Show and attempt to get some real work done at the same time.

You, the FOT, are welcome to bring as many sandwiches or TastyKake salads as you like to our little bookstore listening party, as well as beer, mojitos, blue.  Provided that you don't spill beer upon our books, or leave sandwich crumbs in the pages of our zines, and so forth. Repeat: BYOB, don't be sloppy uncle soupy. We'll let you use our bathroom, if you can put the seat down when you're done and flush the thing for goodness' sake! You may also want to bring a lawn chair -- seriously -- as Quimby's has all but done away with comfortable seating due to our many "customers" who stay all day, browse numerous titles, are incapable of reshelving and just generally emanate ick.

Although Tom may be on the air on the 25th or the 1st, we will be closed for the holiday. The Quimby's The Best Show listening party will return on Tuesday, January 8.

Happy Holidays,
Brian

I don't live in Chicago, but I always visit Quimby's when I visit.

Brian, I had no idea you listened to The Best Show. There was a movement for awhile to have a listening party at Rodan, but it fell through.

I'll see you on the 8th.

@JohnJunk: Actually, if any FOT showed up at all, they didn't announce themselves and it was an average TBS night at Quimby's.  I just want to build some momentum here!

@Gregory: Show your card next time for a discount! Shhh!

@poindexter: sowley (of course) got me deep in it a few years ago. somehow, I can't imagine hipsters getting railed at blow-dan and listening to Tom. (says their honorary last sunday of the month dj AKA "mr freedom breckenridge night")

It's times like this that make me wish Chicago, not East St. Louis, was right across the Mississippi from me.

Anyone having trouble abiding by Quimby's rules can join me for an alternate listening party at the abandoned car wash out in Cicero. We've converted one of the hoses to shoot flat Old Style instead of water and we have an old truck tire we've modified into a punchbowl/chair. We listen to the show on one rusty Sanyo speaker held together by packing tape. The only books we have are back issues of the comic "Warlord," an issue of Juxtapoz I found at a bus stop and the top half of a bible (literally, the bottoms of all the pages are missing). If you want a seat we recommend bringing a folding chair because the punch bowl is pretty much the only chair.

Jackets are required but flip-flops are okay if you can't afford shoes. Must like animals.

Which issues of Warlord do you have?

I have #35, #61 and (the jewel of the collection) #3 "War Gods of Skartaris," all by the great Mike Grell. I should mention that some kid went through and cut out his favorite panels so it's a bit difficult to follow the stories.

I should mention #3 also features this amazing exchange in the Warlord letters section, hilariously titled, "Chain Mail." The first letter reads as follows:

Dear Joe,
Has the magazine, WARLORD, been cancelled?
-Joe Quinn,
St. Paul, Minn.

Funny you should ask, Joe. And here's a funny answer to your question. Yes, Warlord was cancelled; no, Warlord is not cancelled.

So it's like a conceptual art version of Warlord.  I'm there.

fuggin a'. i'm sayin' CICERO PARTY is where it at.  hell, i'm even related to baldy maltese & i got a lock of betty's hair before the feds destroyed that poor lady's life.

BUT SINCE I'M A-WORK AT QUIMBY'S 2 NITE anyway, the listening party is go, so long as Tom is.

the same rules as posted previously apply.

Quimby's doesn't know jag-all about Warlord, but you people are welcome to read all the dave sim letters you can handle.

well, we listened, laffed along with the customers in the store, but no one announced their presence like "Helllllo Quimby's. I hear there's a doo-wop party tonight."

HEY! Since the next two weeks are XMEN day and New Ears Day, there will be no BEST SHOW listening parties at Quimby's.

However the store will REOPEN for BEST SHOW LISTENING on January 8, 2008, and then every Tuesday night, Tom willing, at 7 PM CST.

@stepheninchicago.  you know how we feel about water sports. <3<3<3

Pretty amazing that:
a)my record playing/life partner Brian is organizing this and i had to find out via a message board.
and
b)I got dissed by tom because I didn't know what he was talking about when he asked me if i "ran the comic book store." In my opinion it's books first, comics second at the ol' Quimbys.

First class, FOT. First class...

@stephen

To be fair, there is an ENTIRE wall covered in comics. You know the one next to all the shelves with comics. Yeah that one!

What's the deal with all of the Chicago and LA listeners? Word of mouth, or is there some kind of connection? I was looking at the Facebook group and there are a ton of you from those cities.

Those of us that listen on our transistor radios rule, and we get to hear the Best Show several seconds before the rest of the nation. C'mon Tri-State area. Represent!

In attempting to visit quimbys.com at work, I learned that the porn filters flag your website as containing sexual materials. ACCESS DENIED. What kind of dirty bookstore are you pervs running?

i have a screening for class every tuesday at 7 to 10 for the next 9 weeks! it's going to make the movies a lot less enjoyable to know that this is going on, especially since my boyfriend is planning to spend tuesdays at quimby's. it was hard enough last week when i called him once the movie was done, and i could hear tom in the background-

I think I can find it within myself to forgive Tom's confusion on this matter because (a) as far as I understand, the store is named after a comic book character (unless the comic book character is named after your store) and (b) said character appears in  the logo of the store.  I consider Atomic Books in Baltimore more or less a comic book store, even though now it looks like only half of what they carries is comics.  Anything that has more than 6 comic book titles that aren't Archie comics is a comic store in my book, basically.
