Started to feel bummed thinking of sad songs.
My Friday night would have gone into the toilet.
Off the top of my head, all GBV songs.
:) Little Whirl
:) Jar of Cardinals
:) Don't stop now

I basically just cut and pasted a mix I've been listening to and made a couple of minor edits.

I thought you were showing off them fancy keyboarding skills.
Now that I know you cut and pasted, I take it back.
I actually liked your happy playlist.

You can tell that three of the biggest influences on my musical tastes are WFMU, this board, and Omar's Recidivism posts.

Randy Newman - I Just Want You To Feel Like I Do
Yikes.
I guess that one joins the ranks of other Newman cheer-uppers like "Real Emotional Girl", "God's Song" and "Old Man".
If I were to pick a happy Randy Newman song, it'd have to be "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear". "They feed us, don't they?" is about as soft as he gets. (On his "real" records, anyway)
Glad to see another Newman fan on the board, especially since Tom came down on him. Hard.
-
Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Everybody Loves the Sunshine

Jasongrote brought up Dolly Parton, so I'm going to go on record and say that pretty much anything dolly makes me happy. I LOVE HER WITH ALL MY HEART!
Dolly is the greatest. My wife and I drove her parents' car from Indiana to West Virginia last summer, and Dolly's greatest hits album was in the glove compartment. I kept talking back to Dolly about all of the horrible men she was always singing about. She needs a nice Jewish boy. I'll treat you right, Dolly!
-
I have a true-life Dolly story. It's not pretty.
-
In 5th grade, my teacher called improper fractions like 5/3 or 6/5 Dolly Parton fractions because they were top heavy.
-
I have a true-life Dolly story. It's not pretty.
I'm intrigued! I hope it doesn't distort my saintly image of her.
-

Do tell, Dave! Maybe you can insert a spoiler space for Beth if it makes Dolly look bad.

Does it have something to do with how things played out with her and Jolene?

Donnie Iris: "The High And The Mighty"
Jason And The Scorchers: "Shop It Around"

I think the music that makes me happiest of all the music is late 80's early 90's hip hop:
Jungle Brothers - Straight Out the Jungle
JVC Force - Strong Island
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Men at Work
Big Daddy Kane - Raw
Biz Markie - Just a Friend; It's Spring Again
Digital Underground - the Humpty Dance
Young MC - Bust a Move
EPMD - So Watcha Sayin'
LL Cool J - Going Back to Cali; Around the Way Girl
De La Soul - Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)
Resident Alien - Ooh the Dew Doo Man
Main Source - Lookin' Out the Front Door; Live at the BBQ
Souls of Mischief - 93 til Infinity
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - TROY
Eric B & Rakim - Don't Sweat the Technique; Follow the Leader; Paid in Full (Coldcut remix)
Black Sheep - The Choice is Yours
Gang Starr - DWYCK
Boogie Down Productions - My Philosophy
Geto Boys - Mind Playin' Tricks on Me; Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta
Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man; Insane in the Brain
and of course, anything from Paul's Boutique, 3 Feet High and Rising, and The Low End Theory
Also, this Glenn Friedman photo makes me happy:

whenever i'm out & about & i hear Regina Spektor playing in a store or a bar, or if i hear one of her songs in a commercial, it brightens my day.
-
Good call on those hip hop tracks, Chris L. (Though I wouldn't include TROY - that's almost in my sad song list.)
-
Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) - Astrud Gilberto
Pretty Girl - The EasyBeats
Come And See Me - The Pretty Things
Baby - Big Boy Pete
At Last - Etta James
This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies (our wedding song. freaked me out when Tom played it once)
Wives and Lovers - Jack Jones (despite rampant misogyny)
Quando, Quando, Quando - Englebert Humperdink (another one with scary lyrics)
I Want You - Marvin Gaye
Save Me - Graham Central Station
Nikki - Burt Bachrach
Monkey Man - The Rolling Stones
Thank You Friends - Big Star
Famous Last Words - 9353
Editions of You - Roxy Music
We All Belong - Dr. Dog
Melody - Serge Gainsbourg
Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
My Baby Just Cares For Me - Nina Simone
Day of Anger - Riz Ortolani
Franklin - Katell Keineg (sung live, preferably. not too crazy about her studio recordings.)
Someday Man - Paul Williams
And while not "songs" per se:
* Scherzo. Allegro in F major from Borodin's Second String Quartet
* II B.S. - Charles Mingus
-
Good call on those hip hop tracks, Chris L. (Though I wouldn't include TROY - that's almost in my sad song list.)
Granted, but that wasn't even the most depressing song on my happy list ("This year Halloween fell on a weekend/Me and Geto Boys is trick-or-treatin'...")

Too true ("It wasn't even close to Halloween...").
-
This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies (our wedding song. freaked me out when Tom played it once)
It was our wedding song too! My aunt played the piano and my cousin sang it.
-
Pretty Girl - The EasyBeats
Nice one. "Friday on my Mind" NEVER not makes me happy no time neither!
Quickly, off the proverbial top of the head, and with a cursory glance at the iTunes, I would also add:
Macca - "Ram on"
Van Morrison - "Sweet Thing"
Hard Skin - "First Day Angry Song"
Big Audio Dynamite - "Sambadrome"
Birds of Avalon - "Bicentennial Baby"
Kristeen Young - "The Dawn of my D-Day"
Mekons - "Last Dance"
Blitz - "Someone's Gonna Die"
Håken Helström - "Kom igen Lena!"
Quit Your Day Job - "Wasted"
Madness - "Bed and Breakfast Man"
Phoenix - "Consolation Prizes"
Anything by the La's
Project Pat - "Chickenhead"
Ramones - "Go Li'l Camaro Go" (Mid-80s Ramones - don't judge!)
Rich Kids - "Ghosts of Princes in Towers"/"Rich Kids"
Slade - "Summer Song (Wishing You Were Here)"
Thin Lizzy - "Dancing in the Moonlight"
Tom Scharpling - "Breakaway," by Kelley Clarkson
But I'm realizing as I'm writing this list that most of the songs I really love make me happy AND sad - not in a "I have mixed emotions about this" kind of way, but in a heart-tugging, tears of joy for the beauty but sadness for the state of things kind of way. Does that make any sense? Too emo?
Anyway, might have to start a new thread later (unless anybody wants to get it going before I get to it) for songs that elicit that kind of joy and melancholy at the same time.
For example:
Waterboys - "The Whole of the Moon"
The Pogues - "The Broad Majestic Shannon"
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - "Johnny Appleseed"
etc...
-
Another song on this thread makes me happy and sad too. Jonathan Richman's "The Morning of our Lives".
-
There's probably quite a few songs that make me happy, but the quintessential answer for me is "I Want You Back" by Jackson 5.
-
Ted Leo - Rock and Roll Dreams'll Come Through
-

You say it well, TL. In fact, the songs I list as making me sad all fall into this category, really.
Damn, does that mean I'm emo, too?
-

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!!

This is going to sound really cheesy, but that's always been my reaction to "Bleeding Powers," especially live. I've actually thought about posing that same question using that very song as an example.
-
this makes me happier than pretty much anything else:

This song just came on my radio and it made me dance in my chair and so I thought... "Hey, I'm pretty happy about this song!"
And there you have it.

For some reason "The Ruler's Back" by Slick Rick always makes me happy. Those idiotic synthesized trumpets really do it for me somehow.
