Title: Christmas Carols: Blessed noise or sound punishment?
Post by: senorcorazon on December 13, 2007, 04:53:30 PM
Who's with me on this one: I say that Christmas Carols are the worst thing ever, except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And there are NO exceptions, no Bruce Springsteen doing Santa Claus is Coming to Town caveats. It is the most awful music.

I am ready and willing to be Hate Pitted for this one. Let the argument begin.

Side thread: Any cherished Hanukkah songs besides Driedel, Driedel, Driedel, "O Hanukkah, come light the menorah" (or whatever that song's called), and the Adam Sandler songs?

I fucking love holiday songs. I put together a supermix of all of my holiday-related music into one mega playlist on my iPod-o, and I have 295 Christmassy songs.

Here is a Chanukah song by The Smittens off of Total Gaylords' Cwistmas Twee comp. Enjoy. (http://www.filefreak.com/ppublic/13416/07%20Good%20Migrations.mp3)

What's better: traditional or modern takes, or even original modern Christmas songs?

I can't stand most modern takes on Christmas tunes. Even though they weren't original then either, Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Johnny Mathis can't be beat. I don't listen to those guys any other time but Christmas. I did like Soupjam Stevens take on "The Friendly Beasts".

Did somebody say Bing Crosby?

This probably gets posted on this board every year, nevertheless...
The singing starts at the 2:00 mark

I get really happy everytime Mariah Carey comes on the radio with "All I want for Christmas is Youuuu!"

I love Christmas, and all of the cheesy music that comes with it!

And Aimee Mann put out a really good Christmas album last year.

I do hate TransSiberieanSteamroller or whatever its called though.

My Christmas guilty pleasure is Amy Grant's Home For Christmas. I don't think there is such a thing as a Christmas guilty pleasure but if there is that's a main offender.

They've been playing Christmas music non-stop at my workplace since Thanksgiving. It's torturous.

John Fahey put out a record of traditional Christmas music that's quite nice.  Other than that, I find most of it tedious, especially because I inevitably start humming it.

I have a fairly decent collection of good Christmas albums - artists like the Beach Boys, James Brown, Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens, Elvis and comps like the Phil Spector and Motown albums - but I only play them on Christmas day. That's really enough. It's tough to get behind a solid month of Christmas music when there are only 6 songs.

The Muzak in my building is Christmas-related from Thanksgiving to New Years.  So now I essentially associate Christmas Carols with the bathroom.  Thanks, corporate America!

I have heard more than 10 versions of the following songs:

"... everybody's waitin' for the man with the bag."
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
"Santa Baby" (including a new white-hip-hop one where the chick sounds like she wants to, uh, do it with Santa - keeps saying "gimme gimme gimme")

Eartha Kitt's sounds the same way.  Isn't that the whole point of "Santa Baby"?

Eartha Kitt wants Santa to THINK she wants to do it with him.  This chick wants to go through with it.

I always thought so. While on this subject, I'd like to say that the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" has disturbed me since I was a tiny child.

It's fun to try to locate non-annoying Christmas songs.

My favorite is "Don't Believe in Christmas" by the Sonics.

Runners up:  a lot of these are obvious, but the pickings are slim.

Losing my Sledge by TBC Poundsystem
Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues
Child's Christmas in Wales by John Cale
Christmas on the Block by Go Home Productions (mashup)
Christmas Vacation by the Descendants

My favorite Christmas albums are the Spector one and the Ventures.  The Soupjam albums are already overplayed.  The others are too, but they're better so it's less annoying.

Fairy tale of New York is the best Christmas song ever. That song always warms my heart.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love from the Spector LP is a good one. Or, if you're more punk rock and less R&B inclined, there's a version by the New Bomb Turks.

Yes, I agree.   It's also one of those songs with a weird association for me: whenever I hear the line "The Cops of the NYPD Choir are Singing Galway Bay" I flash on the police blotter photos in Luc Sante's "Low Life."  But then a freshly-mowed lawn reminds me of the Beatles' Revolver, so maybe it's not so weird.

Is this a Velvet Underground Christmas song, buffcoat?  Pretty potent Christmas gift.

Damn, Janey, you're right.  Lou Reed Does the Holidays would be awesome.

European Son (Sleighbell Version)
Venus in (Red) Furs
Holly Jolly Heroin
White Light, White Heat, White Christmas
Run, Run, Run Rudolph
The Black Angel's Hanukkah Song
The Gift [song and 'zine]
Candy Cane Says

It might be a novelty item that probably wouldn't bear frequent listening, but
I would pay for this.

I hate most Christmas music, but I had to make a playlist for a holiday party at work this year and I bought some pretty good stuff off of iTunes, including Jimi Hendrix doing the Little Drummer Boy and the McKenzie Brothers' Twelve Days of Christmas (which I didn't play at the party).  That War is Over jam is pretty good, I think.  Woody Guthrie does a good Hanukkah song.  There's also some song that gets a lot of download action and remixing called Ocho Kandelikas that's a chahannukkkkkkkah song in spanish.  There's Beck's Hanukay rap song The Little Drum Machine Boy and that's kinda cool if you wanna pretend it's still 1994, which I like to do sometimes.  There's also this reggae song called "Irie Christmas" which I like.  Eek-A-Mouse doing a musical version of "The Night Before Christmas" leaves something to be desired, but I bought it anyway.

Non-professionals singing Christmas Carols live is almost always sound punishment.

My favorite part of that song is, "You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot / Happy Christmas your arse / I pray God it's our last." No, seriously.

There's always "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy."

And the parody follow-up "Mommy Looks Too Much Like Santa".

Bruce Cockburn's christmas album is pretty neato, if you can take his brand of folk/world/rock.

So I guess this is the part where I come out and say "thanks for reminding me what Christmas is really about!"

I still don't like having it shoved down my throat for a month before, but I did find myself humming "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" today. Damn you, Claus! You've won again!

Great selections.

Sarah, you're spot on with the John Fahey albums. The medley of Hark the Angels Sing and O Come All Ye Faithful has the distinction of being the only Christmas song I play off-season.

I was thinking about this the other day since I work in retail I'm subjected to this stuff for a solid month (or more). I was thinking of bands and artists past and present that could've made amazing (or at least interesting) Christmas albums— albums I probably would buy— but had the good sense not to.

Example:

If Kraftwerk made a Christmas album.
If Devo made a Christmas Album (I surprised they didn't actually, it would seem like a logical ending point for the band).
If Ted Leo made a Chirstmas album.

One last thought, the worst thing you do to someone in the middle of July is wait for them to get into an elevator or car with you then start softly humming "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." Guaranteed to get stuck in their head.
