Title: Anybody interested in a Boston listening party?
Post by: Tedstud on December 18, 2007, 09:26:24 AM
Hey everyone,

Apparently this is my first post.  I'd like to try to set up a Boston listening party at some bar or coffee shop in the new year.  I know Boston is evil these days 'cause we win at all our sports but we support the Best Show when we aren't busy being champions.  So if enough people respond, I'll try to organize something for January.

Good guys win,
Ted

Your FOT moniker is an almost perfect anagram of my surname.  It's very disconcerting.  I wondered for a moment if I'd created a new account during some sort of fugue state.

I'm very curious how I'd fit the 6 and 4 into your surname.  Is your name Italian or something? ;D

"Almost perfect," I said.  And I nearly noted "sans the 64," but I figured I didn't need to be so persnickety.  I forgot I was dealing with a FOT.

Maybe I was joking before but I think it would be much more interesting if you started working numbers into your last name.

Having just this morning gone through yet another wrangle with a joint that couldn't find my name in its system because of the various ways people and/or computer programs decide to alphabetize it, I think I'll forgo complicating matters further by throwing in numbers.  Besides, that would be far too modern and screen-namey for this old fart.

It depends, are you going to play Don't Look Back, or the classic debut album? And where will this Boston listening party be held?

Definitely the self-titled debut.  I feel enough time has past since Brad Delp left the earth that we're finally starting to heal.  Now, we need to celebrate his life with a voracious listening party in his honor.  We'll spin through the first album and touch on great cuts from their other albums.  I'll find a place (Boston metro of course) as soon as we get enough people interested.

I would kill to ride in one of those alien ships,
Ted

I dreaded this day, since I work evenings and never get to hear the show live. so i can't make it.  You guys have my Boston FOT moral support. Tom has been heavy on the Boston bashing lately, this is a great way to show him Boston doesn't ruin everything and that we can get behind both The Best Baseball, Football and Basketball Teams in the Country and The Best Show on WFMU.

Let's not forget the great Hockey Team (one of the original 6) who are having a great season also. I'd love to attend but I hate dealing with the traffic of Boston, the parking of Boston, and of course the way all the roads are set up.

I hear ya on the trouble of driving in Boston but it doesn't have to be right in Boston.  I could be in Somerville, Cambridge or somewhere else that is easier to get to.

As it happens, I went to the Bruins game last night and nothing about that game implied they were having a great season.

Please. You're just adding fuel to the fire. Also, I'm not behind at least the first two teams you mentioned. It is possible to not give a crap either of them and live in Boston. I would like to see the Celts and Bruins make something happen, if only if it serves to bring some attention to (at least in my opinion) two far more entertaining sports than the boring-no-matter-where-you-live pro baseball and football. Plus, we all know that the Puppy Bowl is the only real sport worth watching at all.

i hear you tim, im just as annoyed at the yahooism that has engulfed the local sports scene as you are.  i'd trade in a superbowl to get another nba title or a stanley cup. i was just playing into the stereotype.

I like to consider myself a man who breaks down barriers.  I am a huge football fan but I also own a puppy bowl DVD.   Controlled violence fueled by HGH and puppies are both great.  We can all live in harmony!

What if you combined HGH with Puppies? There's a reality show waiting to happen.

Really?  About two of the replies actually interested in the party part of this post so far.  I'll start looking into some things and get back ya but definitely keep posting if your interested.

Chris I was thinking of trying to organize something in the Somerville, Davis/ Porter area.  What do you think?  Anybody have a better idea?

I'm willing to bet almost half the FOTs in Greater Boston live in Somerville.

I'm down when I return from my Winter break. My roommate would probably be game as well seeing as how he's the one who introduced me to TBSOWFMU...and yes we live in Somerville by Davis Square.

It would turn them into a lethal combination of Cujo and The Dingo that Ate My Baby. But they would still be small, like the rabbit that attacked Jimmy Carter. (http://www.narsil.org/politics/carter/killer_rabbit.html)

I say yes. I was actually thinking about it tonight. This month is a bit crazy for me (apartment and job hunting) but maybe once (or even before) that's settled for me, count me still in.

So who'd be in charge of said listening party?

So after a year of not much happening I'm helping Ted out and starting the search for a venue somewhere around the Boston area.  Ted suggested starting with a Bar named River Gods that's in Central Square in Cambridge, so i've sent an email to them asking about a listening party.  If anyone has any other suggestions on places they think would be good post them up here and i'll give them a call / email them.

Yikes... yes, it has been nearly a year. River Gods is a great joint, but it looks like they are booked solid for the month of January http://www.rivergodsonline.com/ (http://www.rivergodsonline.com/), which frankly is great for them considering this is the apocalypse, I mean, the slow season. At The Middle East (where I work), the only feasible room for such a gathering is the corner/bakery, where there is an opening this coming Tuesday (1/13... listed on the website as TBA, but the date is listed wrongly as 1/12, so that could be wrong, as well as the TBA), but the rest of the Tuesdays there are booked for January. I'll look into seeing about prospects for February, as there are at least a couple of other FOTs who happen to be co-workers of mine. PM me or email me (timklateriser at gmail dot com) if you don't hear something from me by next week.

That sounds great Tim.  If you can get the corner booked I'll put some effort in to promoting it one way or another.  Mike Milliard from the Phoenix is a fan of the show so maybe I can get them to put something in the paper about it.  I could probably get an announcement on WZBC too.  We'll be waiting to hear from ya Tim.  Thanks!

Hey all -

Sorry about the lag in updating on this. Turns out there is something else booked for Tuesdays in the corner at the East, at least for the next month (February). So... uh, unfortunately, I've got nothing. Anybody else have any ideas?

I mean, how many Boston area listeners are there? Worse comes to worse couldn't we just have a listening party at, y'know, somebody's house?

Well, Boston usually represents pretty well during the marathon so there is definitely an audience out here.  I believe the Chicago listening party went off okay (Can anyone verify that?).  But worst case, I don't think the Best Show meet up is a bad idea either.
