We're going to Italy in April and I'm trying to figure out what to do. There seem to be a ton of websites, but most of them are crap. Anyone got any good websites for finding "off the beaten path" type things to do in the following cities?
Italy itinerary
1Barcelona
2Monte Carlo
3Florence
4Civitavecchia (Rome)
5Sorrento
7Dubrovnik, Croatia
8Split, Croatia
9Koper, Slovenia
10Venice, Italy

Try to check out Ljubljana if you can - it's 4 hours from Venice by train and probably really accessible from Croatia too. If you see a shop in Dubrovnik that appears to sell only salt, stop there. It is the most amazing salt in the world. You also have to try the chocolate with salt flower. Avoid Trieste. Venice isn't known for its food but the further away you get from the big touristy areas the better it is.

I was in Venice this last September and we took the train to Conegliano and then cabbed it up to a vineyard in the Prosecco wine region. It was so cheap and good, we had to eat in shifts. We ended up leaving with 8 bottles of prosecco at 2 Euro a piece.

With the current exchange rates, that's like $800/bottle.

Wear some cast iron pants if you have a cute rear end.
Also, if you see money on the ground, let it lie. Someone tried to pick my pocket in Paris (alliteration!) as I bent over to pick up a (then) 20-franc note that turned out to be tied to a string.
Luckily, I had the wallet in the front pocket.
Also, under no circumstances trust Europeans.
Also, there are about 25% of the public restrooms that there would be in a similarly sized US city. So learn to hold it and don't eat or drink too much at once.
Have fun!

I really liked the chapel of the Capuchin monks in Rome. If you share my morbid bent, you might too.
P.S. Where is the sixth stop?

Not Sweden
Booo!

Since you're going to Sorrento, try to visit Capri - its just a quick boat ride away & its really beautiful. also, Pompeii and Herculaneum are nearby & worthwhile if you have time to go to one of them.

Andy,
Have you heard of the "Let's Go" travel guides? They're full of reviews, written mostly by students and 30 something adventureres. They show you how to have a good time in any city for cheap.

Oh, and if you stop through Venice, you MUST visit the Capella degli Scovegni (or the Arena Chapel) in Padova, which is a ferry trip away. Giotto painted the inside of the whole church, and it's absolutely breathtaking.

What an awesome trip! I'm JEALOUS.
In Barcelona, Barcelonetta is nice if the weather is good. It's a neighborhood by the water - somewhat touristy, but still lots of nice cafés and bars. There are a bunch of side-streets off Plaça Catalunya that have both touristy stuff and almost secret little squares to wander into. And actually, as not "off the beaten path" as it is ("isn't?"), the Gaudi stuff - Park Guell and the cathedral are definitely worth seeing. A little farther afield is Heliogabal - my favorite little bar (in Barcelona, that is): http://www.heliogabal.com/home.php (http://www.heliogabal.com/home.php)
They have music (I've done a solo show there), but it's a tiny place in a cute and quiet little neighborhood (called Grácia - which is actually becoming kind of "hip," for lack of a better term, so you might find more cool stuff there, too), so they keep it mellow - very friendly!
In Rome, there's a weekend outdoor market in Trastevere that has some of the most amazing bootleg clothes - it's worth going to just to gawk at the Italian version of "Engrish" - "Lonsriver" (as opposed to "dale"), "Scottish Lion" (with the Pringle logo), "Frendi," etc. I guess you could call it... "Ingrese?" I found a crazy jacket there that had black pleather sleeves with "U.S. Motorcycle Club" patches, a green felt (like a high-school letter jacket) front, with some other non-existent American organization's monogram, and an orange felt back with a huge embroidered reproduction of a Blake Babies flyer from the Middle East in Boston! So random - so bizarre!! And that kind of stuff was EVERYWHERE. Worth a stroll through (but I second the "watch your pockets" sentiment)...
Oh - and just for the record, I DID buy the jacket, but it was a gift for someone who used to work at the Middle East.
Have fun!

Hmm... it must be Mahmood, because Hoskins still works there.
