August is clearly the new break out character on the Best Show. Some have called him the new Petey but I think this is an unfair comparison. August brings an eloquence and intellectualism to his calls that Petey never did. Not that Petey wasn't great in his own way but he was never as umm... articulate as August is. Petey's time has passed. Long live August!
-
He's Petey's complete opposite, man, and if you ask me it's a little creepy (though not in a bad way.) August is around the same age Petey was when he started calling, but August is well spoken, soft spoken, not prone to talking over Tom, and extremely low key. Petey was a maniac in those first few years. August sounds like he's got ice in his veins. Nothing against August or Petey, I'm a huge fan of Petey's and I think August is a great caller, but it seem a little odd, no?
-
He is no Petey.
He's not even Sathington.
He seems like a good kid, but I want him to dish on his Rock Music taste.
-
august is a nice young lad. but he is definatly nothing like petey is to the show. a Petey call adds as much to the show as a wurster or earles call. its hard to tell whether anything petey says is true or just part of an act. i love it
-
Petey is a genius (and was much younger than August when he started calling, I believe). August is simply a nice kid, though possibly a serial killer in the making. (So much self-possession in someone so young makes me nervous--though, come to think of, I was pretty self-possessed at 12/13, too, and I haven't gone on a spree yet. There's still time, though.)
-
Lifelong internet access has made kids way more intense than they used to be. I'm curious about how many of them will end up "going off the grid" as their form of rebellion. I went ahead and trademarked "Amish Chic," just in case.

Sarah,
I have every faith in you that you could aspire to serial-killer status if you wanted to.

Aw shucks, Richard.
Actually, I'm already playing one online, so the urges have a harmless outlet.
-
i love august. such a decent kid. i am re-thinking my position on atheists because of him. i guess they can't be all bad.
-
Sathington was the king of creepy. There's no way anyone could call August creepy when, right there on the same planet, is Sathington, playing really long bass solos and threatening to kill himself. (not that I don't like the kid --we're myspace pals!) August seems like a good kid. He's probably just overcompensating in sanity for his psychotic, petey-esque brother. He'll probably too much pot in high school and become a straight-edge science professor in north carolina, just like my repressed, atheist cousin.
-
There's something really endearing about Tom's rapport with the younger FOTs. Remember the show where Tom said he could do any format? His kid's show was goofy, but had a lot of heart.

In the case of August, you can tell that he really likes and respect Tom. He starts every call by defending Tom against previous callers that have given him a hard time. He seems to be sincerely troubled by those who attack/disrespect The Kid.
Tom + young FOTs = Awesomeness.
-
August is the new petey. Im too old. I dont really like his calls though.
The natural instinct to act retarted on tom's show didnt settle down yet. I'm changing, anyway.

Tom used to be referred to as 'Puberty's Chaperone' which would seem to be a succinct way to some up his rapport with the 'tweens.
-
Lately Tom seems like the substance abusers chaperone.

Alas, August was responsible for last week's "L" on the board. Everything was going so hilarious w/ Tom's review of The Killers. I love how Tom was genuinely baffled at how to critique those guys. He wanted to slay them, but they were beyond slaying. It was very meta, actually. Personally I was astounded at how bad they were....and I'm hyper-objective (ha, nice word) towards bands I've never heard before.
But back to August. It wasn't his fault. He's young. He seemed a little down. I can't believe he went to the YLT show! Perhaps if he saw the carnival-like backstage atmosphere after the gig with the cake, soda and ballons he would've been a little more fired up. He needed a soda.
Tom must be careful w/ this one now. August put the "L" on the board. Best show needs a bullpen.

Let's hope August writes that short story in which he and Tom go on adventures through space in a winged vehicle. Nobody has called with any creative writing since Marky unleashed the Wainsworth excerpt! (I'm not counting "When Nerds Talk").

I think this whole "W" and "L" thing is actually detrimental my Best Show experience. Time was when I'd listen to a show from start to finish with no expectations, just vague hopes of hilarity amidst the inevitable lows, and I was rarely disappointed. In my view, a true "L" would be like every 3 years. One of those "For Completionists Only" numbers. also, wasn't the "Good Guys Win" Theme meant expressly to lift the show OUT of the gutter, not to celebrate an in-the-can win?
-
I think August needs to open up a little bit. He can't be indifferent about everything can he?
-
He's a kid, we were spoiled by Young Petey's fresh approach to life and how frank he was and silly. August is a normal albeit precocious, kid. The most obvious example is he fear of discussing what bands he like, we old fogeys have forgotten how much kids judge each other over such trivia. I don't blame him for being reserved with info.
-
I second what Richard just said.
Let's never forget that August is a kid. Petey too.
We need to salute the younger FOTs and give them time to grow. I'm as guilty of not allowing this as anyone.
Tom.

That's what I was trying to say when I called, but no dice. "Good Guys Win" might've thrown the last minute over into the W.
-
I just re-read my post. To blame the 'L' on August was harsh, and I would like to rescind. Perhaps Tom could give August a detailed movie review assignment for a show?..it would easily be 100000X more interesting than Spike's reviews...
-
Long form taxes would be more interesting than anything spike has to say.

I think I found the very first August call.
It's from the 7SD show "Voice Recognition" from September 2004 when August was age ten:
http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=12393&starttime=0:16:54 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=12393&starttime=0:16:54)
He calls back in the same show here:
http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=12393&starttime=0:41:43 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=12393&starttime=0:41:43)
Neither call is even a little bit interesting but I felt it was my duty to post them here for posterity.

When was Petey's first call?

When was Petey's first call?
I wondered this too. I really hope it's archived.
I am amazed these kids were listening to FMU so young. It kind of makes me feel bad, I was still picking my nose and watching cartoons at that age.
-
I largely still am, and I am many times their ages.
-
I don't know when Petey's first call was, but it had something to do with Tom being a brave knight and slashing away at the scum of the WFMU message board, or some such thing. I think. Like he was daring the flamers (of which petey was one) to call the show so he could murder them with his voice or whatever, and I think maybe Petey called then. They were definitely not friends to start off with. There was also that other old messageboard mutant who shall remain nameless. Maybe I'll go and try and find a link to that show...

July 10, 2001: Tom Is The White Knight Of WFMU, Shining A Light On The Cockroaches That Infest The WFMU Message Board. (Note: This is a very angry and not-so-entertaining show. For completists only)
(you know where to find the link...)
-
heres a very early petey call where he tried to find newbridge on the map and got gomped. it was in the middle of a wurster skit.

I just wanted to show my support for August! This kid rocks. :)
-
I know this topic is really old, but I got to wondering today, When was the last call that August made? It seems like it has been a while, and he has always been one of my favorite callers.
-
If I remember correctly, he was actually a call screener at last years marathon (maybe the year before, but I'm pretty sure it was 2008). He called in either right before or right after that. He had that old man "I'm not into the hamster dance" quality to his voice.
If Petey taught us anything, it's that you're only cute for so long.
