Maybe instead of the lifetime achievement award, Tom can finally give himself a coveted "humorist" award, a la the Mark Twain prize.
-
There should be a Best (Worst?) Soundboard Award so we can finally figure out whether Mr. T or General Zod would reign supreme.
-
I have a nomination for best costume:
-
I am asking all FOTs to suggest both categories and the nominees within. The awards show is going to be spectacular. Get ready and wear something nice for once in your life next Tuesday.
Tom.
-
I suggest the category: Non-US Listener
or maybe: Vault Keeper
-
I suggest the category: Non-US Listener
or maybe: Vault Keeper
(http://www.liberalstreetfighter.com/ee/images/uploads/CryptKeeper.jpg)
-
What if there was a Best Supercaller category? That might defeat the purpose of the supercaller status, though.
-
How about a "person most likely to become supercaller".
or "caller most likely to to be hate pitted"?
-
or "Podcaster most likely to bother Tom with an on air phone call/self promotion"
-
Best Recap-maker.
I nominate Omar, and that one drunk girl's cat.
-
or "Podcaster most likely to bother Tom with an on air phone call/self promotion"
YOU BEAT ME TO IT! But I was just gonna call it "Saddest Sack: Podcast Division"
-
Best chatter: Wes. He needs to call in! :'(
-
Best Unintelligible Caller: Stevie Blue
Most Controversial Caller: Laurie
Best Topic (they don't all have to be about callers, do they?): Commercials that should be TV shows
Best Impersonation by Tom: Nicolas Cage
Lifetime Achievement: Officer Tom
Best Dungeon-Keeper Doo-Wop Fan: Let me think about that one.
-
I suggest the category: Non-US Listener
or maybe: Vault Keeper
How about US non-listener? I nominate Duncan Hunter.
-
Best Topic
Oooh, that's a good one. I would second the nomination of Commercials to TV Shows. The Movie Quotes topic was a runaway success, too, in terms of calls, but Commercials to TV Shows was waaay more funny.
What about Best Extended Movie Rant? Juno vs Mr Brooks vs I'm Not There....tight running.
-
What about Best Extended Movie Rant? Juno vs Mr Brooks vs I'm Not There....tight running.
I think the Tom / Patton tagteam would have to take it for Juno . . . Tom waking up to a civilization that has adopted Juno dialogue and dress . . . And then the big reveal, with Tom seeing that statue on the beach, its pregnant belly sticking through the sand . . . nooooo . . .
-
My favorite topic was 5 people you'd least like to have dinner with.
Best Guest Host: Seth Galifianakis
Worst Guest Host: Philly Boy Roy
Best Addition to the Hate Pit: Jerry Seinfeld
-
Juno vs Mr Brooks vs I'm Not There....tight running.
...vs Grindhouse.
-
Juno vs Mr Brooks vs I'm Not There....tight running.
...vs Grindhouse.
...vs The Bucket List
-
Possible award and nominees: Best means of disposing a person who has drawn your ire (Hate Pit, Space Shuttle, Submarine, Mobile Trap Door That Launches People and Burger King Welded Shut And Dropped Into A Volcano).
Best member of ABBA? Would Tom be able to pick one?
I don't know if this sort of thing is possible, but due to his history and repeated interactions with its people, I'd like to see Paul F. Tompkins awarded Honorary Newbridge Citizenship.
I'm still hoping that "The Nemmies" catches on as the unofficial nickname for the awards, since "Secret Sonta" and "fon fiction" haven't taken hold yet.
-
THE WIRE: Best Long-Running Rant Ever Heard on Radio About The Best Show Ever Seen on Television. Ever.
I mean, unless you Wire fans think that's an exaggeration... wouldn't want to exaggerate anything like that.
-
Biggest Ghoul: Guy who had Heath Ledger in his death pool, Julie, guy who suggested flying planes into people on 9/11/07, guy who wanted to scream into elderly people's faces...I'm sure there are a few others.
EDIT: I'll have to endorse Tom's Mr. Brooks rant as the Best Movie Rant of 2007. It was almost a third of the show, plus it was the only rant thus far that inspired me to go see the movie in question.
-
I'd like to see Paul F. Tompkins awarded Honorary Newbridge Citizenship.
But would he want it?
-
Comeback-Kid
Also think Laurie is deserving of some sort of recognition, though I'm not sure what it would be. (I personally appreciate her.)
-
Will there be a moment of silence for all the people turned into ghosts this year?
-
There has to be some sort of official decision on whether Hesh is sadder than James.
Unless.. unless they're the same person.
-
Best member of ABBA? Would Tom be able to pick one?
I know who's got the edge...
-
I like Hesh. You know what, I should qualify that. I like Drunk Hesh, especially Tom's impression of Drunk Hesh. Truly epic lulz.
-
Best member of ABBA? Would Tom be able to pick one?
Yes. He can and has. It's not even a contest.
Tom.
-
Will there be a moment of silence for all the people turned into ghosts this year?
A massive LOL on that one!
-
Mark me down for Mr. Brooks as the best movie takedown of the year. He picked that thing apart practically frame by frame. (Side thought--Things you would love to see, but will likely never get to: A weekly Siskel and Ebert-style show with Tom Scharpling and the Movie Boy. My guess is that Tom's head would explode by the end of the first installment, but the entertainment value here would be off the charts.)
And there has to be an award for best GOMP, right? I don't think there's any question that Hesh's first call should get the nod.
-
The Creepiest Laugh category has two contenders: Spike and the sound effects board.
-
Best member of ABBA? Would Tom be able to pick one?
Yes. He can and has. It's not even a contest.
Tom.
-
Best chatter: Wes. He needs to call in! :'(
and best/funniest message board poster! (was this already mentioned?)
i think it would be like a six-way tie.
i guess worst poster could be a category too.
i hope this is a secret ballot.
-
There has to be some sort of official decision on whether Hesh is sadder than James.
Unless.. unless they're the same person.
James wins. Hands down.
-
Mark me down for Mr. Brooks as the best movie takedown of the year. He picked that thing apart practically frame by frame.
Does anyone know which show the Mr. Brooks rant comes from? I'd like to hear it. Thanks.
-
and maybe best feud? or best at feuding?
like AST v. FOT
or Laurie v. that girl from LA
or Officer Tom v. Purple Shirt
or August v. Petey
etc.
-
Mark me down for Mr. Brooks as the best movie takedown of the year. He picked that thing apart practically frame by frame.
Does anyone know which show the Mr. Brooks rant comes from? I'd like to hear it. Thanks.
June 12, 2007. The Mr. Brooks segment is about the last 45 minutes of the show.
-
Comeback-Kid
Also think Laurie is deserving of some sort of recognition, though I'm not sure what it would be. (I personally appreciate her.)
Best laugh, of course.
-
I love all these ideas! Can we set up some polls on some of them and see what's what? Any way to keep the voting secret til the show? For only me to see?
Best GOMP is hilarious. Let's come up with the Top Five suggestions (with corresponding sound clips?) and the winner can be revealed on the air.
You guys are knocking this thing out of the park. Let's all work on it and make the awards show great!
Thanks!
Tom.
-
in addition to best GOMP id like to see an award for most GOMPed.
excluding obvious offenders like james I'd like to see which regular caller has been GOMPed most this year.
-
I'd like to nominate...
"Who Are The Five People You Would Want To Have Dinner With The Least?" as the hot topic of the year.
-
I'd like to nominate...
"Who Are The Five People You Would Want To Have Dinner With The Least?" as the hot topic of the year.
third'd
Though I was also a big fan of So Help Me I Like It
-
How about Best Movie from the Build-a-Movie Game?
-
Best Impersonation by Tom: Nicolas Cage Don Imus
I simply could not stop laughing at that wierd noise he made.
-
Best GOMP of 2007 nominee:
4/17/07 (the first show back after the kidney stone): I don't know how to link to a specific part of the archive, but it's at 25:50 - right at the point when he abandons the sick voice.
Are the nominations limited to 2007? I'm assuming so, but I don't see anything in this thread specifying the rules.
-
Best Best Show Accessory? Podcast, archives, chat, message board etc... or better yet best accessory Tom has threatened to pull the plug on!
-
Most Valuable Episode: the hilarious Christmas episode, the best december-time gift i received
Every other award should go to Hesh.
-
Best "I don't know why I hung up on that guy" call
Most charming caller (between Bonnie and Laurie, best laugh goes to Laurie hands down)
Best rope-a-dope
Best chat/board person who should call (Wes)
Best nervous caller talk-down
-
The Steve Weibe Award for Arcade Dominance.
Oh yes I did!
-
How about "Best call by (name a caller.)"? For instance, Best call by Spike; Best call by Petey, etc...Of course, this might require someone obsessively going through the entire archive and studiously keeping a record of every call; who made it, what time did it start, how long did it last, and what was the point(s). Hey, Laurie's not working, right?
-
Maybe we could set up a temporary forum and each category gets its own topic?
I've been looking through the recaps (http://www.recidivism.org/tbsowfmu/) and I'm through about March so far...
Best Topic is an awesome idea...
- Rock 'n Roll Heaven
- the movie game
- best movie quote
- dial it down a notch
- I don't get it (Jan. 30 - also contains a good rant on Little Miss Sunshine)
- Come on, guys
Best In-Studio Guest:
- Tim & Eric
- Paul F. Tompkins
- Patton Oswalt
- Jens Hannemann
- Zach Galifianakis
- Seth Galifianakis
Worst Publication:
- Autograph Collector (Jan. 16)
Best Street for Cruisin':
- Hylan Boulevard
Best Sing-a-long:
- Under Pressure (Jan. 23)
- when the mother sang along with Tom to "Kids! What's the matter with kids to-dayyy?" (when was this?)
- "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Ted Leo
Best Laurie Feud:
- vs. people's hate pits
- vs. Petra Hayden
- vs. her banning (06-07)
Tom's Favorite Henry Rollins book:
- Smile, You're Traveling (Black Coffee Blues Part 3)
- Get in the Van: On the Road With Black Flag
- See a Grown Man Cry, Now Watch Him Die
- The Portable Henry Rollins
I think Fred from Queens deserves at least a nomination for his sometimes misogynistic "bits".
People I Miss in the Chat:
- Jess Shambler
Also there should be an award for this line (from Feb. 13) which I still think about sometimes:
"Tom asks Bonnie if she grew up in Georgia, or, as the natives call it, 'N'awlins'."
-
Best laugh, of course.
I'd probably be inclined to agree, but it seems too... simple an award to sum her up adequately. She's definitely much more complex than a pleasant laugh. ;D
-
Best "I don't know why I hung up on that guy" call
Most charming caller (between Bonnie and Laurie, best laugh goes to Laurie hands down)
Best rope-a-dope
Best chat/board person who should call (Wes)
Best nervous caller talk-down
Yes! to all of these.
For the Most Ghoulish category I'd like to nominate a guy that called a few months ago (I'm not sure if it was even 2007), who Tom declared the worst caller ever. The call went something like this:
"Hey, is this some kind of high school radio show? I thought this was some kind of a homo-show, but you're pretty funny." *GOMP*
Help me out, Omar.
-
Help me out, Omar.
Type what you're searching for into g**gle and add "site:recidivism.org" (without quotes) after your search terms (http://www.google.com/search?q=homo+high+school+site%3Arecidivism.org). It was on Nov. 28, 2006.
- A first-time listener (starts at 1:31) wasn't sure if he was on the air because he expected some kind of fancy call wrangler to tell him that he was up next. Tom informs him that this is not NJ 101.5 with Jim Gearheart or Tom Leykis -- it's down home radio. The caller thought WFMU was a college station, so Tom tells him it's the station for the high school where he works as a Home Economics teacher. The caller doesn't want to offend Tom, but he says he thought he was listening to a "homo station". However, he discovered that Tom is actually pretty funny. Worst. Caller. Ever. Mark it! November 28th, 2006 at 9:36 p.m.
-
The "Should-Be-More-Frequent-Callers" Award:
Jouster
Omar
Sparkiepop
Jason
Stan
Sarah
Emily
Josh
-
I also nominate Laurie for Supercaller and Kickthebobo for the Hall of Fame.
-
Best Call (period): My vote would be for the initial "Get ready to meet my little friend" guy. You cannot make that stuff up.
Worst Call (period): Can't really think of the worst. Excluding the obvious couple of candidates.
Also, I don't know if this qualifies as a GOMP, since it was just a hangup, but I love the moment during the "Worst Thing Anyone Has Ever Said To You" when someone calls and says, "Post-coitus... 'I have AIDS'." And Tom just hangs up and says sadly, "I don't wanna do this anymore".
-
Worst Call (period): Can't really think of the worst. Excluding the obvious couple of candidates.
The worst call is the call not made. :'(
-
http://www.youshare.com/view.php?file=gomp.swf
This is easily the best GOMP in best show history. It turned an L into a W in mere seconds. I've heard it dozens of times and never get tired of it.
-
Worst Call (period): Can't really think of the worst. Excluding the obvious couple of candidates.
The worst call is the call not made. :'(
Two would-be callers diverged in approach, and I—
I took the one less traveled by;
I made the call,
And that has made all the difference.
- Robert Frost's "The Call Not Made," written in quiet meditation after a gomping
-
Childhood Achievement Award:
Nominees:
Petey
August
Sathingt(r)on
Anti-Hasu Kid/Hasu Kid (lump them together, why not?)
The Teenage Girls (The three that hosted that one time and pretty much disappeared after that)
Mac (uh, maybe not)
Some of these nominees had a pretty brief run, so maybe they shouldn't get nominated.
-
The Teenage Girls (The three that hosted that one time and pretty much disappeared after that)
I've always wondered about this. Petey obviously defeats everyone, though.
[Thanks Josh.]
-
in addition to best GOMP id like to see an award for most GOMPed.
excluding obvious offenders like james I'd like to see which regular caller has been GOMPed most this year.
My personal protege, Larry the Perv, would have to be considered for this award.
-
I actually think that James should not win worst caller of the year. Giving him any recognition only encourages him to call up. Let's all agree he's awful and misguided and place him in the ignore catagory.
Though it didn't occurr in 2007, the guy who called up and thought WFMU was a "homo channel," was still the worst.
-
Are the nominations limited to 2007?
I was wondering this too. I think they should be, but if they weren't, I'd have to nominate the epic Billy Crystal Jazzman Hurricane Katrina Relief Playback/Rant is the best thing of all time ever.
Also, Stevie Blue gets the nomination for the Still Creepy in '07 Award for his great call about pestering Martina McBride's husband by pretending to be Reba McIntire's husband, which made Hesh and James seem bush league.
Also, that GOMP that somebody mentioned from where Tom was back from the kidney stone gets my vote for #1 GOMP.
-
2007 Awesomeness Award:
Tom v. Jesse Thorn/Jordan Norris, 7/10/07
Tom v. Henry "Steamrollin'" Owings, 9/11/07
"Protective goggles? You're throwing a Wiffle ball around, you're worried about losin' an eye? Really?" -- Tom, questioning the necessity of Henry Owings's protective Whirlyball gear
"I'd put Ringo Starr. His recorded output in that era. Little more tuneful." -- Tom, offering a replacement for The Jesus Lizard as Best Band on Earth circa 1989-1993
Perhaps the finest moment of 2007:
Tom puts Henry on the clock. Henry says he's been reluctant to call the last few weeks because Tom seemed a bit on edge, but he still wants to provide a wrap-up of the hotly-anticipated 8/8/07 Team Chunklet vs. Team Pharmacists Whirlyball match. Henry tells Tom that Ted will need his help. Alas, Team Chunklet remains undefeated. The buzzer sounds, and Tom resets the clock so he can hear another 30 seconds of Whirlyball talk. Henry is thrilled with the time extension and promptly starts his usual steamrolling routine, apparently unaware that he was having a live radio conversation instead of delivering a monologue. In the past, Tom tried to remain calm during these installments of The Henry Owings Interruption, but not tonight. The Kid reached the breaking point. He screams at Henry for talking over him. Henry seems a bit taken aback by the sheer force of Tom's admonition, and he apologizes for his rudeness.
-
My favorite moment of the year? Patton Oswalt improving lines for Rambocky with Philly Boy Roy.
-
Best Sing-a-long:
- when the mother sang along with Tom to "Kids! What's the matter with kids to-dayyy?" (when was this?)
The performance of Kids definitely deserves some Best Performance By Group Or Duo type of award. One of my favorite moments of the show this year.
Will there be a moment of silence for all the people turned into ghosts this year?
This might also serve as a reminder of some of the other passings this year, like Power-Pop Pop Pop, WFMU’s copy of Ram and that dude Philly Boy Roy killed.
If best Best Show show of 2007 is a possible category, I think I’d nominate 1/2/07, featuring a Spike call, Tom and Roy discussing that computer simulation that got everybody talking, Roy’s first round victory over Gary Heidnik in Channel 10’s “Battle of the Philadelphians”, the in-depth discussion of Paul F. Tompkins’ tutelage under comedy genius Matt Albie, match fighting, the arrival of the sound effects board, Tom’s crusade for Coke Blãk and Planet GG.
Regarding best rants of the past year, the various mentions of The Bronx Is Burning should be in consideration. Which episode had Tom giving away the ending, with Reggie Jackson capturing Son of Sam via home run?
Looking for some best GOMP/Good Day Sir contenders, I came across this via Omar’s recap of the 10/9/07 show and really need to re-listen to it:
While catching up on the recent podcasts, John heard Tom express disinterest in what Pugsley Adams was up to these days. He doesn't have any Pugsley news, but he did grow up with the kid who played him in the early-1990s film adaptations. Tom considers these the "cool" versions ("This isn't your father's Addam's Family!") compared to television serial featuring Ken Weatherwax in the Pugsley role. John calls his generation's Pugsley a punk, so Tom bids him good day before he can further besmirch the good name of young Jimmy Workman.
-
My favorite moment of the year? Patton Oswalt improving lines for Rambocky with Philly Boy Roy.
Another classic, which occurred in the same show as the Tom vs. Jesse Thorn segment mentioned above. A time-capsule installment.
-
This might also serve as a reminder of some of the other passings this year, like Power-Pop Pop Pop, WFMU’s copy of Ram and that dude Philly Boy Roy killed.
Has there been official confirmation that people who are barged are, in fact, dead?

I may be wrong, but I think Tom did that riff at the end of his conversation with Philly Boy Roy on 7/31/07. Sadly, my recap of that call has been truncated by either a technical glitch or a James-ing. This has happened to at least 4 or 5 2007 recaps, although I hope to be able to restore these to their original condition with the aid of archive.org captures.
-

I don't think so.

I'd like to think the likes of PPPP, Jeff Cooper, and Edgar Ploppleton are off in some remote crevice of Newbridge plotting their revenge ...
-
Can I have a No-Prize?
-

The Gorch survived a barging, though he is the Gorch.
-
Mac (uh, maybe not)
Mac is responsible for the enduring Wiggy Malmsteen
-
Mac is also responsible for one of my favorite moments. The time he calls up talking about his heavy metal book and Aerosmith, Jon calls up pretending to be Jimmy Crespo and he and Tom spend about thirty minutes just messing around with him.
-
Best Dance : The Darryl Dawkins
-
I know it probably doesn't count because of the 2008 date, but there was a really good rope-a-dope on this week's show (1/29/08). It was the caller right before me and you can hear me laughing when Tom put me on the air. The call starts at around 59:40 on the archive:
Caller: This is Tom in Buffalo.
Tom: How are you tonight?
Caller: Good! I called in last week but it wasn't a very successful call. You called me a gorilla.
Tom: Why did I call you a gorilla?
Caller: I said I bench-pressed my girlfriend (? Not sure what he says here, but this is my best guess).
Tom: Uh-huh. How did the call end?
Caller: I think you hu--
Tom cracks up.
-
BEST GOMP OF 07 HANDS DOWN BAR NONE THIS GOMP HAS ITS OWN THREAD (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,1266.0.html) INCLUDING A DEFENSE FROM THE GOMPEE IN QUESTION (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,1266.msg14942.html#msg14942)
- Paul from Nashville, TN, calls to ask Tom to settle a debate he's been having with his girlfriend. Tom wants to hear more about the key issues before agreeing to serve as their radio arbiter. Paul says they are both law students with one year remaining prior to taking the bar exam in late July 2008. Time expires, but Paul earns another 30 seconds. He explains that most law students go on a "bar trip" to some exotic locale after taking the examination. He and his girlfriend are having a big dispute about their desired destination. Paul really wants to go to South America (less "ethno-centric and Western"), but his girlfriend prefers a jaunt to Spain, Greece, and Portugal. They thought Tom's wisdom could help them work through this crucial life decision. Tom says that Paul and his girlfriend have what he likes to call "rich people's problems." He doesn't care about their fancy travel itinerary and issues an emphatic GOMP to the rich jerks/future lawyers.
This was also the first CLOSED PHONE TUESDAY using THE 30 SECOND TIMECLOCK!
I uploaded the clip listen here (http://www.divshare.com/download/3670449-2fd).
-
Best "Friendly End to a Good Call", other than Tom's increased squeaky goodbyes (I don't even know how to type that awesome noise that happens sometimes when Tom's ending a good call) it would have to be this past Tuesday's call that was right before mine.
Tom sang "Thaaaaank you for calllllll-ing!" and it was perfect. I think it's around 1:29 in the archive but I'm not sure.
-
Best Resurrection Call.
Caller enters dead-on-arrival and exits in "rarified air."
-
Worst dinner companion choice that probably everybody can get behind: John Stossel
-
Most Educational Call --- my nomination would the guy who informed Tom that CVS is an acronym for "Consumer Value Stores." Prompting Tom to decide he would never shop there again.
Song of the Year (any year?) --- Ted Leo. Rock and Roll Dreams'll Come Through. Done.
-

Thanks!
Tom.
-
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM
Good. (I was a bit concerned about not having a category that could include JW, but this one solves it beautifully.)
-
WORST CALLER
I nominate:
"Homo radio" guy
Guy who wants to scream at old people ("what is this - Saw?")
Julie
Spike
-
WORST CALLER
I nominate:
"Homo radio" guy
Guy who wants to scream at old people ("what is this - Saw?")
Julie
Spike
"Homo radio" was 2006. (I think it was the circa-Thanksgiving Tom Waits Defense Force show.)
Did "this is Dubba Hoosaaaay" make any appearances in '07? That was just baffling/lame/pointless.
-
Oh damn.
-
WORST CALLER
MOST PATHETIC CALLER
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER
SADDEST CALLER
Gee this looks like a sweep for one sad little man and I don't mean Spike.
-
(http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p155/fradom/paneranap.png)
(This is an authentic Panera Bread napkin. I retrieved it earlier today.)
-
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER
Clark of Venison Stew
tbs_clarkvenisonstew.wav - 36.25MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/71366342f3b5ea/)
I think he called again but this one is classic with Tom's fake laughs, also a pretty good GOMP
-
My votes
BEST CALLER - All of the supercallers are great, but my vote goes to Dave from Knoxville.
WORST CALLER - James
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - James
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - James
BEST GOMP - 4/1/07, 25:50 - I mentioned this earlier in the thread. First show back from the kidney stone, guy calls in to tell Tom he came back too early. Tom drops the sick voice and GOMPs him at full volume. The return of the king.
BEST GUEST - Paul F Tompkins
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Eddie
SADDEST CALLER - James again
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - 6/5/07 - The Gorch, in studio, threatens Tom with a chain which has a loaded handgun attached via spot-weld.
-
Best Live-In-The-Studio Guest Reaction To A GOMP.
-
BEST GUEST - Seth Galifianakis
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Jason
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Bonnie
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - 1/16/07:
Brock thinks Tom should look out because Ray Ray just told him what would happen next. Ray Ray is the guy in the ski mask. He said there's a DJ who’s being stalked by a creepy guy in a ski mask, and the creepy guy won't ever stop until he skins the DJ. Ray Ray is sort of there with Brock now. Brock sees him in the bathroom mirror. Tom tells Brock to put his hand up to his face. It doesn't feel like he's touching his face, but it looks like it in the mirrow. He sees one hand touching a ski mask, while the other hand holds the phone ... and a knife. Tom wonders why these guys find him. Brock explains it to the tune of "Let's Go" (including handclaps): the guys like the night life, baby, and she says, "You die."

I second this. This was one of the most surreal and creepy Wurster calls ever.

I remember Brock's call, but I thought it was 2006. Nice catch, Omar.
-
I'd like to second Bonnie from Georgia for Rookie of the Year. I know that race is tight and seemingly locked, but that charm makes her my dark-horse candidate.
-
Best Guest - Ted Leo
Best Caller - Paul F. Tompkins
Best Threat - Hammerhead - 7/17/07 "This is my pit. This is my pit. I'm gonna stage dive on your face."
-
Most Pathetic Caller - The Redeeming Rainbow guy, Hesh, Captain Jack, Jason from Guys With Feelings
Worst Caller - Julie from Cincinnati, Henry Owings
-
Bonnie is a very charming Southern Belle, but I have to go with Eddie for Rookie of the Year if only for the reaction that he gets out of Tom on every call.
-
If my name was Dick, then these would be Dick's Picks:
BEST CALLER - Laurie (The underdog - if there were a "Biggest Sport" award, she'd be a shoo-in. Erika, Paycheck, Dave and Eddie are all top shelf also.)
WORST CALLER - James (He really was responsible for 93% of the bad calls in 2007. Go through the archives - he's a lot more prevalent than you remember.)
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - (Tie) Spike, James and Hesh
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - James
BEST GOMP - Tom GOMPs Jesse Thorn
BEST GUEST - Seth Galifianakis ("Next caller!" I love PFT, but his brother and Seth had great back-and-forth.)
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - I'm drawing a blank here. Kidding! It's gotta be Omar! (Pronounced "Omah"!)
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Eddie (I like how he always sounds half-asleep; it's deadpan for the 23rd century. Bonnie's great as well, and I also like the guy with the hip-hop blog, whose name escapes me.)
SADDEST CALLER - Hesh ("I don't have any friends. I'm Hesh!")
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - "I'm gonna make you eat the Bible...and not in your mouth." Kip Palfner, 2/6/07
-
BEST CALLER - Laurie (I heart Laurie. Haters begone.)
WORST CALLER - where in the GOMP roster should I begin?
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - Philly. Dude's got some work to do as soon as he finishes watching Che-Guevera-esque-Promo-Art Rambo.
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - where in the GOMP roster should I begin?
BEST GOMP - Something that either PFT or PO witnessed and reacted to.
BEST GUEST - PFT
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - I got nothing.
SADDEST CALLER - The drunk woman vs the boring Christian band woman.
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - Something involving a very "unconventionally beautiful" dead fish. There should be a /WORST included in the category.
-
Best Caller - LAURIE! (upbeat, funny, always has something to bring to a conversation...I don't know why she wasn't the very first Supercaller)
Rookie Of The Year - Eddie (that dude syncs with the Best Show's personality effortlessly)
Best Guest - Paul F Tompkins (I think that one is obvious enough)
Worst/Saddest/Lower-Than-The-Hate-Pit Caller - James (n'uff said)
MVF (Most Valuable FOT) - The dude that edits and compiles the podcast (Currently the podcast is the only way I'm able to hear the show. So, Hats off to you, Sir...whoever you are
-
BEST CALLER
tie between Ted Leo (just because) and Paul F. Tompkins (because Tom has such a good time talking to him, even though we all feel left out during their conversations)
WORST CALLER
Julie (though she's a newcomer, I think she wins for sheer misguidedness, arrogance, and obnoxiousness)
MOST PATHETIC CALLER
tie between Hesh and James
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER
Stevie Blue (I know he barely called and that I'm taking his earlier record into account, but the stream of gibberish and his absolute obliviousness seal it for me; Spike at least is self-aware)
BEST GOMP
Hesh or Henry Owing (he got GOMPed, right?)
BEST GUEST
tie between Patton Oswalt and the Gorch
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER
Andy (sorry, Omar--had to go with the underdog)
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Eddie (because he makes Tom so happy)
SADDEST CALLER
James
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM
too many for me to choose
-
I wish there would be a NEWBRIDGE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR award.
I'm also on the fence about whether to give James any more attention.
-
I'm pretty sure Julie's first call was the first show of '08 let's keep it within the rules guys.
- - - - - - -

Hmm....I'm starting to think that I'm the only listener who gets an odd kick out of Spike's calls. During the first show of the year, Tom says that he has a Supercaller online ready to kick things off right...THEN:
"FMU you're on the air"
"Hellooo Tooohm..."
That was hilarious to me.
-
Gagneaux, I love the Spike calls too. He generates some of Tom's best material - the ankle bracelet? One knife and one fork? The doo-wop dungeon? Hilarious. As much as I love hearing Laurie's laugh, I vote for him for best caller.
-

Spike is very inconsistent and often gets stuck in the doo-wop/Chucky/Bush is the Village Idiot rut, but he's provided some great fodder for Tom over the years. Some of their Abbott-and-Costello-y exchanges are undeniable classics.
The 9/5/06 show is the best example of this:
(re Spike's dining experiences during a trip to Philly)
Tom: What did you order there?
Spike: In both cases, seafood.
Tom: So Rotten Ralph’s, you had seafood.
Spike: Yeah, basically seafood and …
Tom: Like a fish fillet sandwich?
Spike: Excuse me?
Tom: Like a fish fillet.
Spike: Yeah, fish, well it wasn’t a sandwich, it was fish and vegetables ...
Tom: So you took it off the bun.
Spike: No, it didn’t come with a bun. What I had didn’t come with a bun.
Tom: You told them not to bring the bun.
Spike: No, it didn’t come with a bun.
Tom: ‘Cause you told them not to.
Spike: No.
Tom: That sounds like a pretty good waiter.
Spike: No, no. It didn’t come with a bun.
Tom: I would hope not. If you told them not to bring the bun, they didn’t bring it.
Spike: No, it wasn’t a sandwich.
Tom: Rotten Ralph’s.
Spike: It was a platter.
Tom: It was a platter?
Spike: Right, but it wasn’t a sandwich.
******
Spike: I always forget his name.
Tom: Ricky Gervais.
Spike: No, the American version of it.
Tom: Oh, okay, yeah, that guy is …
Spike: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, that guy.
Tom: Yeah, Stephen Colbert.
Spike: No. His name is Steve, but that’s not his last name.
Tom: Steve …
Spike: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but you know who I mean.
Tom: Ah, Steve Richards.
Spike: No.
Tom: No?
Spike: Carol? Carell?
Tom: Carol Stevens?
Spike: No, not Cat Stevens.
Tom: I didn’t say Cat Stevens. I said Carroll Stevens.
Spike: Well, I never heard of her.
Tom: Him. Like Carroll O’Connor.
Spike: I’ve heard of Caroll O’Connor, but I never heard of Carroll …
Tom: He was not in Little Miss Sunshine, Spike. You are mistaken. Carroll O’Connor is in very poor health, and I’m sure could not have done that movie.
Spike: Carroll O’Connor’s deceased.
Tom: Wait, hold on. What?
Spike: Carroll O’Connor has been deceased for a number of years now.
Tom: Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.
-
Spike is not bad at all, sure when he started he was a bit of a douche. But now Spike seems to be resident of Newbridge.
I mean James is just pathetic in a massive way.
And that girl Julie is closing in real fast with some of her delusions of grandeur. Nothing worse then self important asses.
-
I also join in the Spike lov... not hatred.
Even if Abbott really doesn't know what Costello is doing, it's still funny. And the cheap, thoughtless nicknames - "Jenny from the Bedroom? Cmon." are worth the price of admission.
Plus the greatest nickname Tom's come up with yet - Droopy Zippermouth.
-
BEST CALLER - Spike
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Taco Stand Guy. I can't remember his name, but he went on for how long?
BEST GOMP - Paul from Nashville.
-
Count me in the "fans of Spike" court. Someone else once pointed out that Spike really does bring out the best in Tom, and I couldn't agree more. He seems like a straight man that doesn't know he's a straight man, like Margaret Dumont from the Marx Brothers movies.
-
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Taco Stand Guy. I can't remember his name, but he went on for how long?
Good one. It was Jeff Jensen.
-
Another BEST GOMP nominee: Stan, the history teacher, from Staten Island
Tom: Who would you tell to dial it down a notch?
Stan: Well (blah blah blah) Muslims.
T: Who?
S: Moslims..? Cuz, y'know after the whole Sadaam Hussein thing and I was reading--
T: MUSlims, oh you're telling MUSlims to dial it down a notch.
S: Yeah. Yeah MOslims.
T: ... Okay.
S: So yeah, this whole Sadaam Hussein thing, and I was reading today that--
T: Oh, you mean that thing where they killed him?
S: [Haughtily] Well YAH, what other thing? Heh... But I was reading today that Moslims are boycotting Northwest Airlines because of racial profiling...
T: myeah..
S: --and I mean, come on guys, it's 2006-er, sorry it's 2007.
T: [laughing] yes.
S: But, I mean, wha- I mean come on and then they're upset because we assasinated Sadaam Hussein on a holiday. You're right it's a holiday, (inaudible) come on (inaudible) so... you know, I mean come on Moslims!
T: I'm kinda losing sight of what you're gettin at here buddy.
S: You get it?
T: This one's a little loose. [Stan interrupting] You're a teacher?
S: That's why, uh I don't wanna -
T: I'm getting my red pen out on this call. I'm gonna circle a few things.
S: OK
T: Tighten it up! Just imagine this, you're getting this call handed back to you.
S: [Innocently] Whatd'you mean?
T: It could be shorter. Tighten it up. What's the point? [Stan interrupting again] GET OFF MY PHONE!!! Now that's written in RED INK on the top of the paper "GET OFF MY FON" spelled with an 'F' because that's what you get on that call. An 'F'.
-
Spike's voice really, really grates on me (has anyone looked into the possibility that he has a big wad of tobaccy in his cheek?), but I have to agree with the whole "honorary Newbridgeite"/world's creepiest straight man sentiment. His recent habit of hanging up on Tom before he can get GOMPed is pretty funny, too. At least he doesn't revel in being a stupid gimmick.
My awards choices are in general agreement with everyone else's, and I could really go any way on them (we listen to the Best Show = we are all winners), but I really gotta stump for the Rope-A-Dope against Hesh from 5/8 as Best GOMP.
-
Saddest Caller/Moment:
"I don't have any friends. Come on! I'm Hesh! I'm like a 4' 5" midget doing a dance thing or whatever." -- Hesh on his Heshiness, 7/17/07
He had also just admitted to becoming an alcoholic since he started calling the show.
-

Do you have the date for this call, girlorwoman?
-
1/16/2007
I went for the early shows :-X
That was a really sad moment when Hesh said that. I felt kinda bad for the guy.
-
Do you guys remember that ghoulish ambulance driver guy who called in to complain about non-English-speaking, injured people? That guy almost makes my Worst short-list.
-
HAHAHA those are great nominees, GorW!
Here's the Stan from Staten Island GOMP (http://www.divshare.com/download/3685229-bd9).

Yes! A perfect example of Tom driving the bus off the road and then Spike trying to steer it back in the wrong direction. Excuse this horrible analogy, but it's the best I can do.
I like you Omar.
-
Thanks Josh! I'm just going to wait for that to pop up organically in shuffle.
-
BEST NONVIOLENT THREAT: When Thor from Eastbridge (Grassroots Movement) threatened Tom with "10 years of boredom" by banning the show if elected King of Newbridge. Scary!
July 31
-
Song of the Year: "Under Pressure" - Tom/David Bowie/Fred Mercury, 1/23/07.
-
Here are some threats edited and uploaded to SendSpace (more to come):
Jan 9th: The Drunk Driver Threat (http://www.sendspace.com/file/n9o94d) (one of the most bizarre yet)
Jan 16th: Neighborhood Hero Brock Peuchk (http://www.sendspace.com/file/gdj25b)
Feb 6th: Tom's Trivia-Obsessed Co-Worker (http://www.sendspace.com/file/91zff8)
Feb 13th: The Blogger (http://www.sendspace.com/file/kq0jcg)
May 29th: The Gorch Calls In a Threat (http://www.sendspace.com/file/rqhti3)

If Julie isn't eligible, I vote for Boring Owen or Henry Owing. (Never noticed the similarity in their names before. Appropriate, given their brotherhood in boredom.)
-
Hmm....I'm starting to think that I'm the only listener who gets an odd kick out of Spike's calls. During the first show of the year, Tom says that he has a Supercaller online ready to kick things off right...THEN:
"FMU you're on the air"
"Hellooo Tooohm..."
That was hilarious to me.
Just as a behind-the-scenes aside; I was on hold that night. I think when Tom hit the wrong button, he really DID hit the wrong button. But I have been wrong before.
-
Pretty sure you're right, DFK. Tom's sincere shock at hearing Spike is what made it esp. funny.
-
Do threats made by Tom count? If so, I nominate Tom vs. Jack White, 6/19/07:
"I'm not gonna fold like the guy from Von Bondies. I'll give ya a knuckle sandwich. I'll give ya a red stripe ... of blood across your forehead."
-
BEST CALLER: Paul F. Tompkins (started the year out as a caller, ended as a guest!)
WORST CALLER: Spike (however, he is the most essential worst caller. It would be weird if he didn't call in, so...its hard for me to nominate him)
MOST PATHETIC CALLER: Clark from Venison Stew
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER: JAMES.
BEST GOMP: Funniest: the guy who got GOMP'D during the Grindhouse segment because he said Tom wasn't funny but instead "has a wit."//Most Epic: HESH (the Kid got him to CALL BACK simply to GOMP him).
BEST GUEST: Patton Oswalt
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER: OMAR!
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Eddie (but Julie the drunk is a dark horse candidate for this year)
SADDEST CALLER: JAMES again!
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM: Gene Simmons threatening to Behead Tom with his Ax Bass.
-
I feel like I need to repeat my vote for best guest host.
SETH GALIFIANAKIS.
This is very important.
-
BEST GOMP: Funniest: the guy who got GOMP'D during the Grindhouse segment because he said Tom wasn't funny but instead "has a wit."
Good one. This call started at 2:16 of the 4/17/07 show should anyone desire to construct a sound clip.
-
I feel like I need to repeat my vote for best guest host.
SETH GALIFIANAKIS.
This is very important.
I second the importance of this. I mean, really:
"Jesus has risen, but the biscuits haven't." -- famous North Carolina Easter saying
"My cab driver's name was Foosball or something like that like Foosball. Or Ping Pong or something. It was crazy." -- Seth, discovering the cultural differences in New York City
"Those margaritas, you'd think they'd go away, but I'll tell you what, they still kickin' in a little bit." -- Seth on the lingering effects of the T.G.I. Friday's drinks he had earlier in the day
"Alright, that's it. He's gone. He's gone." Seth on Zach's landmark decision to pick Morris Day over Gloria Estefan
"We. both. like. ca-la-mari. We. both. like. The Fugees." -- Seth, finding some common ground with Zach
"It's got that fat Scientologist in it and that colored guy that went crazy." -- Seth, running through the cast of Wild Hogs
And let's not forget:
"Seth's hoping that the macramé will lead to some extended pride in the team as they head into summer practices, but he is also concerned that some of the players will get carpal punnel turndrome from the macramé sessions. Tom thinks that the QB should probably go a bit easy on the macramé, and Seth says that he's #4, so he'll only have to complete one digit."
-
After listening to the 8/23/05 show on the archive, I've got to re-assert my love of Spike's calls. That show has some of his best/worst nicknaming - Twitney Spears and Baked Ziti Jones prompted Tom to predict Spike will become the next Al Jaffee.
-
Hey folks:
I'm helping out by compiling sound clips of all of the violent threats and GOMPs you suggest for Tom to use during the show. If you'd like to make a nomination for either of these, could you help me out by making them before, say, 10pm EST tonight (2/4)? I want to make sure I can compile them and get them to Tom in time for the tomorrow night's show.
Thanks!
P.S. If you're going to nominate a GOMP or violent threat, please try to mention which show it's from and, if possible, the approximate time at which the call started. If you'd like to go even further and post an audio clip of the call, all the better.
-
Are there any other categories that still need nominations and clips?
-
I'll add a couple more later.
-
I have a nominee for Most Delusional or possibly Best GOMP but I am not sure what episode its from. Its the guy who had an internet radio show called Venison Stew who constantly laughed at himself and tried to rope Tom into a few terrible conversations. That contained some great moments.
Also, I don't think that James should be even mentioned. I've been relistening to the shows this weekend and he is a constant presence. Much worse than Spike who in small doses has some mileage.
-
Clark. I thought he was hilarious, unless he had mental problems, then I thought that someone should be overseeing/supervising his access to telephones. And I don't mean hilarious as in, he's saying this on purpose to make me laugh. I mean in a good-hearted but probably cruel at its center this-guy-has-no-idea-how-far-from-reality-he-is way.
If it was an act, it was on a level with Wurster's best.
-

Clark's third call in the 9/11/07 show. Not sure of the exact time, but it was the last call of the show.
"Clark estimates his listenership at less than 100. Tom's shocked at the low number, and he finally figures out what Clark's been up to tonight. He saw The Best Show as an opportunity to drive new listeners to "Venison Stew". Clark denies using Tom to push his program, citing his refusal to give the website. He wishes everyone good luck in trying to find it using Google due to the countless results for venison stew recipes. Clark says the show's name is based on his screen name of "venison88". Tom's had enough of the self-promotion and starts to feel the competitive heat, so he bans Clark for one year. Clark claims the fallacy of Internet radio is that people actually know it exists. It's too late. He starts crying, and Tom GOMPs him. Tom's been down this road before, and he doesn't want Clark showing up at the studio with a microphone and a cooler. Every time The Kid entertains an apparent psycho, they hurt him. Look for Clark to return in 2008!"
I look forward to his return after serving the one-year ban.
-
By the way, 9/11/07 is perhaps the finest show of 2007:
Tom vs. Henry Whirlyball discussion (w/ Ted)
A delightfully odd call from Michael K of The Cynics
Tom on Joe Torre's Bigelow Tea ads
Tom on Super Dave's decaying visage on CYE
Horse
Clark
Amazing.

Does no one have any love for Jens Hanneman?
-
Does no one have any love for Jens Hanneman?
I do. He'd be my #2 pick for Best Guest behind Seth G.
-
Def Clark for MOST PATHETIC CALLER (and/or MOST DELUSIONAL).
-
Does no one have any love for Jens Hanneman?
Petra Haden sucked out all of my affection for Jens and Fred's visit.
-
BEST CALLER - Laurie (Your calls have definitely grown on me), John Junk (always is great for topic calls) and just as I was a Steinberg apologist I have to admit that I would be very sad if Spike ever stopped calling in.
WORST CALLER - Eh, I don't know. Sometimes the worst callers make for the best. The James saga turned into something better than James. I guess Julie for trashing the community. OR the ones who don't call in which makes me the worst caller.
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - Julie
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Spike
BEST GOMP - Jessie Thorn
BEST GUEST - Fred Armisen
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Bonnie
SADDEST CALLER - I'm coming up empty here
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - So many to pick out just one.
-
BEST CALLER - Spike
WORST CALLER - Spike
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - Spike
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Spike
BEST GOMP - Law student querying Tom on vacation spots. "You have what I like to call "rich people's problems." Very satisfying.
BEST GUEST - Paul F Tompkins
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar
SADDEST CALLER - Spike
Had to come out for Spike; he's a Queens guy. I liked the call where he hung up on Tom after enduring a comparison to the homeless doo-wop guys in "Rocky" and being told he probably had one knife, fork and spoon in the house.
When I think of doo-wop, I think of Spike, and also the verdict on doo-wop handed down by Joe Queenan: "carcinogenic horseshit" that was washed clean from the charts by the British Invasion.
-
BEST CALLER - my favorites are Laurie and Officer Tom.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Eddie (despite the fact that Greg looked at me with sad eyes and said he wanted this spot. I told him he wasn't quite up for that just yet.... not close)
WORST CALLER - Henry Owings -- Anyone who won't let Tom SPEAK while he's on the phone is the worst.
MOST PATHETIC CALLER - James
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Venison Stew Dude
BEST GOMP - Too many to choose from. But I love it when Tom GOMP's Laurie by accident and then giggles "oh why did I hang up on Laurie?" I think it's happened a few times and I thought it was so sweet. (Just to be clear I'm not saying I don't think Laurie's a good caller. I think she's a GREAT caller.)
BEST GUEST - Seth Galifianakis
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar
SADDEST CALLER - Jason Nash or any of the podcasters who are doing self promotion and trying to start fake wars with tom, etc. etc.
-
I'm throwing another "best GOMP" nominee into the mix - Tom turning the pretentious I'm Not There fan into a ghost at the end of his rant/review on the 12/4/07 show.
-
can someone post the jessie thorn gomp?

Are you talking about The Leader? I kinda like his calls, but like Spike's, they are an acquired taste at best. He is to Christopher Moltisanti what Spike is to Droopy Dog.
-

Pete. I think all of his calls were in 2006.
-
Yeah, I like The Leadah for some reason. I can't explain it.
-
I made a little montage of Best Guest nominees, doing my best to cover everyone's nominations and suggestions.
It might be a bit longish(3:00) and not in the categories requested, so Tom, no worries at all if you don't wanna use it. It was fun to make and could be enjoyed just in this thread.

MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER - Taco Stand Guy. I can't remember his name, but he went on for how long?
Good one. It was Jeff Jensen.

I made a little montage of Best Guest nominees, doing my best to cover everyone's nominations and suggestions.
It might be a bit longish(3:00) and not in the categories requested, so Tom, no worries at all if you don't wanna use it. It was fun to make and could be enjoyed just in this thread.

Nice work!

BEST CALLER: Laurie
WORST CALLER: Spike
BEST GUEST: Yetta, or she would have been if she were ever a special canine guest.
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER: Omar
-
Petra Haden sucked out all of my affection for Jens and Fred's visit.
True dat.
-
The friend of my enemy is not my enemy.
-
So is everybody getting dressed up tonight— all Paul F. Tompkins style? I've signed up as a seat filler whenever Eddie, Laurie, Spike, Seth Galifianakis and so forth need to step out.
-
I will wear the same thing I always do, although it may be slightly cleaner.

Best Caller!
-
Maybe I'll sport my supercaller visor, courtesy of Secret Santa Andy.
-
I'm really looking forward to it; glad to be free of a prior obligation and can listen live.
Maybe I'll iron a pair of pajamas. No flip flops or sweatpants though. That would be slobby.
-
I bought a Philip Lim dress and a rouched peep-toe pump by Marc Jacobs at the Barney Co-Op this weekend. I probably will not wear it tonight. I might wear my kitty vacation pajamas!
Okay, okay, it's a dress by 3.1 Philip Lim and a pump by Marc by Marc Jacobs. So, yeah, it's not crazy crazy expensive. It's the last thing I buy until February 21st (http://www.kidrobot.com/products2.cfm?ID=6112&cfid=5024861&cftoken=21095343&nav_chooser=). I'm unemployed.

Dig it.

I'll be wearing my usual garb.
-
I'm going out straight after work to buy a new hockey jersey, black denim shorts and black trenchcoat for the occasion.
-
I will be asleep. I'll be wearing a suit though.

Make sure you let others know you plan to do this. You don't want to wake up with your family crying over you.
-
(Unintentional bad timing: I attended a funeral today.)
EDIT to clarify: I thought it was a funny joke.
-
Ouch! Sorry about that.
-
No worries!

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Eddie (but Julie the drunk is a dark horse candidate for this year)
You take that back right now. I don't care if you wrote it 7 pages ago, it's STILL WRONG.
Also, Paul F. Tompkins was the best guest this year, imho. Better than Patton Oswalt. Even better than Petra Hayden! Although when PFT is on he's more like a co-host. TS and PFT together are an AWESOME TEAM.

I missed 95% of tonight's show - can we get some kind of recap on who won what?
-
I get the unhappy feeling Supercaller Paycheque is, like fellow Canadian and 2006 American League Most Valuable Player Justin Morneau, going to be unfairly maligned for his triumph.
-

BEST CALLER - Paycheck
WORST CALLER - Jesse Thorn
BEST GOMP - Hesh Rope-a-Dope
BEST GUEST - Teddy Rockstar
BEST BEST SHOW RECAPPER - Omar
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Eddie
BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST TOM - Kip Palfner (this could go to Gene Simmons, contingent upon Tom's receiving a $2.5 million payment from Gene's petty cash fund aka wallet)
SADDEST CALLER
MOST PATHETIC CALLER
MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER
I can't remember who won what here, but Spike, Hesh, and Clark were the winners, I think.

It's a Lee Marvin party!
I'm pretty sure Hesh = saddest, Spike = most pathetic and Clark = most delusional. Could be the vicey-versey for Spike and Clark though.

I would like to announce one award that I didn't give because I ran out of time.
MASTEROFSPARKS gets the Best Show Awards Helper Award. Without his super-hard work we would not have had all those clips and whatnot tonight.
Thank you, MoS! I will thank you and award you on the air properly next week.
Tom.
-
I'm glad Paycheck won; I've always thought he should call in more often. Plus, he pays an international fee just to call in.
-
Congratulations everybody who won!
James... hang tight til next year.

Better yet, don't.

Would it be creepy if I looped Tom saying "the one and only Dooorvid" for my ring tone?*
What a great show; jam-packed with legends, the biggest one being OMAR! That's going to be one Charlie Kaufman-y Recap.
Tom forgot to give himself the Tom Sawyer thing, though. I hope that will be re-visited soon.
*Yes it would! I'm not going to do that!
-
James... hang tight til next year.
No more James.

No more James.
The awards just keep coming.
You got snubbed!
-
That was an incredible show. I, for one, think Paycheck, as the dean of Supercallers, is a great choice for caller of the year.
I do want to come to the defense of Spike, a little. Despite the fact that I maligned him on the show as an "unsavory" character, I don't see how you can call him the worst caller as long as James roams free. Spike, in the face of withering (and perhaps, deserved) rough treatment at the hands of Tom, gathers up the intestinal fortitude to call up week after week. Most callers in his situation would have tucked tail between legs (yes, I feel like he probably has one) and fade away, never to be heard from again. But Spike's recurring calls serve a very important purpose on the show; while some argue that he is the worst call, from my perspective he is one of Tom's very best foils, and that creates enjoyment for the masses. That could NEVER be said for James, who is, frankly, a punk.
Hell, I would break bread with Spike, as long as it wasn't at his home, and I wasn't shackled. I hope his recent real-life outing doesn't drive him away; the pest you know is usually better than the pest you don't, and there's no way to know what kind of vermin would sweep in to fill the void his continuing absence would create.
-
James... hang tight til next year.
Better yet, don't.
I'm sorry, by "hang tight" I meant, "wait silently"
-
How about "give up"?
Re Spike, of course he isn't the worst caller. I just find him boring; Tom's responses to him, however, are not.
And re Paycheque, I don't think any of the other nominees are ungracious enough to begrudge him his victory, and I would hope the FOT at large would follow their example. Besides, he does have considerable seniority, so at the very least his consistency over the years deserved recognition. All the other supercallers, super though they may be, are youngsters by comparison.
-
Poor Jesse Thorn. He sounded hurt about his award last night.
-
Would it be creepy if I looped Tom saying "the one and only Dooorvid" for my ring tone?
Yes!
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.
-
Did Gene Simmons call in? I heard Kip's call...
-
Yes. After a run of boasting and condescension, Gene wished Tom a fontastic night in which all his fontasies would come true.
-
Forgot to say this before: I thought it was mighty generous of TL to mention the board during his acceptance call. But then that's the kind of guy he is.
-
Yes, he never forgets the little people.
-
Yes, he never forgets the little common people.
Fixed.
-

The Gene call was pretty terrific.
(dog barking)
Tom: Is that one of your dogs?
Gene: No, it's one of my dragons.

Can we have a discussion about the President of the Los Angeles Chapter of Spike Fans?
absolutely amazing call. There's no way it was Wurster, but was it legit?

I think it was either the guy who played Gus in Rambocky or John Junk.
-
Def the guy from Rat Patrol. Took me a while to realize it though. Good one!
-
oh my god, that totally makes sense! HAHA! So great.
-
Whoever it was, they knocked that one out of the park. :)

It wasn't me, but that guy sent a delegate to the L.A. FOT Meet-Up at Birds awhile back to declare his boycott of the Meet-Up in lieu of a formalized written invitation from our organization to the SOS (Slaves of Spike)... an organization I did not know even existed until that night.
-
Something I've been wondering: When AP Mike answers Spike's calls, does he receive the greeting "Hellloooo Mike"?
-
Poor Jesse Thorn. He sounded hurt about his award last night.
I don't have any sympathy for Jesse Thorn. However hurt he gets from Tom, he brings it on himself. How can he be a smart guy (he clearly is) and a radio personality himself and not understand that EVERYTHING IS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF THE SHOW?
If it were FOR REAL, James would have got the award. But James was snubbed because that's the best way it could have gone. Jesse got the award 'cause it was a funny alternative to giving James too much attention (any attention is too much) and I'm sure Tom assumed Jesse would have had a sense of humour about it.
an analogous example is Matthew Perpetua getting thrown in the Hate Pit. You didn't hear Matthew calling the show and whining and getting all flustered and using his angry hurt tone. He took his lumps and then became the only person to ever escape from the Hate Pit. Plus you didn't hear Matthew BAITING Tom to talk about their point of contention on the air. Every time Jesse brings up the Jesse and Jordan show, Tom tells him he hates Jordan, and Jesse gets hurt every time. It's Jesse's own fault for bringing it up EVERY TIME HE CALLS.
He WAS the worst caller of 2007, and it's hilarious that he's probably a great guy.
-

Don't you mean Derek Stone?
-

uh, I don't know. I thought the show that Tom hates was called "Jesse and Jordan Go" and Tom replied with "Yes, Jordan Go."
-
Holy Crap! I didn't know I was a nominee for best caller. That's awesome! Such distinguished company. Huzzah.
Congrats to paycheque.

Hats off to Mr. Rat-a-louie. Well done on that call sir.

I would like to suggest two additional award categories for next year's show; Best Impromptu Musical Moment, and Best Off the Cuff Pop Culture Reference By a Guest or Mike

I also would've liked to have seen an award for the best/worst article that Tom ripped on in 2007. So many great nominees: Jamie Lee Curtis' blog entries, the Movie Boy's reviews, that one article about the perfect work-out playlist, the Juno script, the Kid Rock feature from Rolling Stone - the list goes on and on.
-
Those are great ideas too. Maybe we should stage some "Listener's Choice" awards.
