Title: Slogan for 2008
Post by: God Stewart on January 31, 2008, 09:32:02 AM
Any thoughts on a new slogan for 2008?

I'll start off with a dumb one in the hopes of inspiring something more inspired.

The best never rests!

Terrible, I know. I need to use my thinking beans.

Here are some cheap James Bond title rip-offs to consider

From Newbridge with Hate
The Man with the Gold Album
The Guy who Gomped Me
ABBABoxy
Tom’s Sorrow Never Dies
Philly Boy Royale

But I guess these aren't really slogans -- it would be more proper to appropriate the Bond taglines like "Everything he touches turns to excitement!"

Thanks, Emily.  Nice work of the Wawa, dave.

Had a look at the Bond taglines throughout history to see if any fit TBS:

Look Up! Look Down! Look Out! Here Comes The Best Show!*
Tom is back in action! Everything he touches turns to excitement!
Welcome to Japan, Mr. Tom
Far up! Far out! Far more! The Best Show is back!
Scharpling is forever...forever...forever...

Nobody does it better.
It's the BIGGEST. It's the BEST. It's TOM. And B-E-Y-O-N-D.

Living on the edge. It's the only way he lives.
His bad side is a dangerous place to be.

You know the name. You know the number.
There is no substitute.
Some shows want to be good... Some want to be better... But for one man, Good Is Not Enough!!!

(Sources:  Thunderball, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill, GoldenEye, GoldenEye, The World is Not Enough)

Some day I'll try to have an original thought.

* Apparently this "Look Up, Look Down, Look Out" slogan was already ripped off by the band YES in their song "It Can Happen."   Now it can be told.

His bad side is a dangerous place to be.

I like it.

Tom vs. Everybody -- sounds a little like Tom vs. everybody including the Friends of Tom and Best Show listeners, who are really on Tom's side to begin with.  And isn't it really all of us against the world?  Maybe that's just my hangup.  I love the concept otherwise.

I thought the same thing. On the other hand, his life is threatened practically every show. That would certainly put me on edge. Maybe it should be aimed at "the mutants," as he is fond of saying. X-men reference anyone? Tom the Sentinel?

I'm just full of bad ideas.

Best Show 08':  May the Gavels Start Flying

or something to do with Tom's mighty gavels of fed-up-with-it-judgement being being hurled through the air, smiting all of the week's substandard pop-culture garbage.  In fact --I just realized that Tom is like the Bizzarro Paul F. Tompkins, also dissecting the week's pop culture, but with much more of an out for blood mentality...  and when the two forces are combined during a PFT in studio session...  a force to be reckoned with indeed.

If Tom v. Everyone is a hit, how about a slight tweak that implies Tom is willing to take on anything, not just any one: Tom v. [the sideways 8 inifinity symbol]. Also implies Tom's disdain for corporate radio.

You can't say a symbol, though. It'll be like when Prince went from "Prince" to "fancy-pants symbol no one can pronounce"

The problem with 'There Will Be GOMPs' is that now that the writers are back on the job, in less than 2 months any reference to the title of that movie will be a tired joke. By the time that November rolls around, it will be an embarassment.

I have two avenues that might go somewhere. It seems like the slogans have mostly been bullying or challenging, which only invites the mutants and toilet talkers to the table. Something like (but not exactly) 'Best Show 08: Where taste meets grace' or something classy might be a good idea.

Another idea would be something like '11 years of (something that I haven't thought of)' which shows the Best Show isn't some fly-by-night podcast.

Not to be a downer, but the very first time Tom suggested that we come up with a slogan, he himself suggested "There Will Be Tom" but dismissed it for having an expiration date. The movie will fade, and the slogan will become irrelevant too quickly.  Doesn't this apply to "There will be GOMP's"?

How about "The Best Show On WFMU: No Country for Animules?"

Hey FOT's!  Steve in North Hollywood here.  I just wanted to say Thanks! to the people that like "There Will Be GOMPs."

I know it's not perfect, but I thought Tom would get a kick out of it.  I'm pretty new to the show, but I have heard him reference that movie a lot, so I figured "What the heck!"  Also, I have noticed a lot of GOMPs since the awards show.  I do get a pretty good laugh whenever he yells "Get off my phone!"  The best one I've heard so far was a couple weeks ago. when that lady was talking about how bored she was with Heath Ledger's death (three hours after it hit the news), and Tom yelled "Get off my phone, you ghoul!"  That was a brilliant touch.

I know it does have an expiration date, what with popularity of the movie decreasing eventually, but aren't we just looking for a slogan for 2008 anyway?

Thanks for having me aboard

I understand people's fear that slogans related to current topics lack shelf-life, but after seeing the movie last night, I am still going to suggest this;

The Best Show: There Will Be Brood
Title: Re: Slogan for 2008
Post by: Steve in North Hollywood on February 28, 2008, 09:59:07 AM
Now, just to clarify, Dave, "brood" pronounced more like "Judd" as in Wynona or Ashley or Naomi, as opposed to "Brood" meaning a close family, and pronounced to rhyme with "Food" or "Jude".

Just didn't want to run the risk of Roddy's baby, Betty, having a baby that she had with Rod's friend, Rog.

I do like "There Will Be Brudd."  But if it is  "There Will Be Brude" that makes me think of a horror movie about incestuous maniacs.  I can't get behind that version of it.  No way and no day.

No, I meant, as in "to brood"

That one. Not like the Cronenberg film.
