Title: Trolls in the chat
Post by: Phantom Hugger on February 02, 2008, 11:11:37 PM
I realize I'm a relative noob to the chat but last week was a little too much.

I don't want to belly ache too much to the fine folks who provide all the peripheral media for the show, but maybe we can moderate some how??

I haven't ever been a regular in the chat, either, but that did make it seem like more trouble than it's worth. The Jameses, Utas, and Meows must be winning.

This week's show was the first time it was ever that bad (since I've been chatting, anyway). I may be misremembering, but I think there was an admission by Julie from Cincinnati that they were all her handiwork. Kind of annoying, but nothing the ignore function can't fix.

If i get online to listen after 8pm est. before tom gets on the mic, I check the chat to make sure there's an episode.

That said, EMOKID from last week? If I had a baseball, I'd throw it in his face.

You are misremembering. I never go out of my way to be irritating.

Oh, for crying out loud! I barely typed anything last week.

Wow, I didn't log on last week. I always log in and check in for awhile but I'm at work so I don't stay on for too long. It seems to be ok for me...never thought hey this guys a troll. There always seems to be 4-5 conversations going on at the same time but there's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, chillun, the chat is just so fulla people now.  Not that I'd ever say new fans of the show are bad.  But it's hard to keep up.

So many people saying their silly little phrases in a desperate bid for attention.  I want MY silly little phrases to be the ones that get ME the attention I so desperately need.

As far as I can tell, the only chatters ruining the chat last week were the ones trying to ruin it, with the meows and chat-crashing links and whatnot.
Those are the only people(it's probably just one guy) I have a problem with, and it'd be nice if they could get banned once they start their stupid shenonigans.

I wouldn't want anybody who actually likes the show to feel like they're being singled out when people start talking about lousy chatters.

Sorry if I'm repeating, but just right+click or ctrl+click the user's name and select "ignore," or type "/ignore (username)" into the little text box.  Gets rid of the little bastard every time.

That or, if you feel you could be an expert chat-saboteur, master the art of hitting alt-V <enter> over and over, really fast until everyone has ignored you.  Then, sign out!  And then, sign back in!  And then ride the roller coaster all over again!  Weh-heeuuuuuu!!  Don't it feel great to be hated?

What does alt-V followed by "enter" do?

What does alt-V followed by "enter" do?

I think Ctrl-V is what was meant, which is the paste command.

So you're like that cool guy from the Apple vs. PC commercials?

My folks actually used to have one of those Macs pictured above.

Gosh darn jam eaters. I like to kick back in my eames chair and eat preserves.

Ctrl V, yes, that is what I meant.  Or maybe Apple V, whatever.  Woops..  I don't know of any other way this person would've done that, unless it's some wierd software that comes with an educational book entitled "Spamming for Dummies" (or should I say phillidummies?).

This week I finally understood the basis for Ignore Function's handle. It's a good handle, and I thank the FOTs who provided the troll-blocking instructions. Hopefully Jason was able to record the offending IP addresses for ban purposes.

I knew someone was going to say that.

Look, if you land on too many keys at once, one of them doesn't have any effect.  In that way, a computer keyboard is like a Moog.

I'm looking forward to it next week.

One querie: Is there a way to disable sound when people enter or leave? It distracts from the show a bit.

Jason, great job on putting that together so quickly. Thanks.

Chat should now work for everyone. Also fixed the username problem that many of you were experiencing, your current forum name should now be displayed instead of the one you registered with.
Feel free to test it out before tuesday.

So...

The chat was running really slow tonight on my computer. I tried downloading a new version of flash but it didn't do much. I'm on Mac OSX 10.39, which is outdated, I know. Is there anything I should try to get back in the groove, so to speak?
