Hello all -
As you may or may not know, the WFMU marathon is coming up - we'll get into that soon enough.
But the issue right now is that I will be singing a song with the rest of the WFMU DJs during the finale on the final day of the marathon. And I don't know what song to do! I could use some suggestions, but I have to have them figured out NOW. Like tomorrow now.
I like to do big rock numbers. Past performances include songs like:
Born To Run
A Quick One (While He's Away)
Paradise By the Dashboard Light
Paradise City
Magic Carpet Ride
You hopefully get the idear. Big numbers with lots of singing - I'm not there to shake a tambourine around while the band jams out.
Please post your suggestions up here and I appreciate it!
Thanks!
Tom.

So I guess "Porcupine Pie" and "Cowboy Star" are out, then...

Ballroom Blitz
The Sweet are ridiculous. I'd vote for "Little Willy" as well.
Also, at the mention of Meatloaf-- I think anything off his amazing album "Bat Out of Hell" is a green light. E
Except for that weird "would you offer your throat to the wolf" poem that starts it out.
But from then on, it's pure greatness.
-
For some reason I can't express, the first song that came to me was Bob Seger's "Night Moves".
I'll think on it some more!
-
Stick with Springsteen and belt out some Thunder Road.
-
One thing - no repeats of past artists and no slow songs!
Thanks!
Tom.
-
Black Flag - My War
-
I, too, can hear you doing "Night Moves," for some reason.
In honor of the year, how about "California über Alles"? I know a Californian isn't in the running, but still . . .
-
My second thought: Paul McCartney's "Band on the Run"!
EDIT: I'm listening to this in the iTunes right now. Tom could rock the fuck out of this song if he sang it. Pardon my french.
-
Bowie- Changes
-
Who did the girl-parts for "dashboard"?
"Never Been Any Reason" - Head East
-Ajax
-
- Sixty-Eight Guns
- Won't Get Fooled Again
- Squeeze Box
- Movin Out
- Under Pressure (reprise of 2007 performance)
- When Doves Cry
For Springsteen I like
And for a Sopranos / Jersey nexus you could go with
-
Search and Destroy by the Stooges
-
Billy Joel-wise, "We Didn't Start the Fire" could be good, clean fun. "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" would be good, too, even if it isn't a rocker.
The Velvet Underground's "Rock and Roll" might be a good choice.
-
Bowie- Changes
Good one, Gilly!
Who did the girl-parts for "dashboard"?
Was it Pseu Braun? I can't remember.
-
Billy Joel-wise, maybe "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" would be good, even if it isn't much of a rocker. "We Didn't Start the Fire" could be fun, too.
"We Didn't Start the Fire" could be fun, yeah.
"Movin Out"s query "who needs a house out in Hackensack?" could be interpreted as a Jersey slam, delivered by Jersey East (Long Island).
-
Dancing Queen. I dare you.
-
Dancing Queen. I dare you.
I hadn't even thought of ABBA! I think we have a winner here...

Two-Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer) - Roky Erickson & the Aliens
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

I thought of suggesting a Roky song. I'd love to hear Tom do Bermuda
-
The Velvet Underground's "Rock and Roll" might be a good choice.
Yes, this is the one.
-
Life on Mars or Moonage Daydream - David Bowie
I might also suggest Heroes or Queen Bitch

Money City Maniacs or If It Feels Good, Do It- Sloan
-
Come Sail Away - Styx

How about "World On a String"?

How bout Cum on Feel the Noize?
-
How about "Surrender" by Cheap Trick?
-
Blue Oyster Cult - Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll. This is a must.
-

-
SO many great suggestions. I think I came up with the winner though. I'm gonna sleep on it, so it's still fair game! Keep firing!
Thanks again!
Tom.

Black Flag - My War
Black Flag - My War
Black Flag - My War
Black Flag - My War
Black Flag - My War
Please do this one.
-
My personal karaoke fave: "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes (this song is awesome when sung by a dude).
-
Cheap Trick - California Man
BOC - Gotta agree on the Red and the Black, but ETI also works
Dylan - Hurricane!
Rush - Freewill
Queen - Stone Cold Crazy
Pink Floyd - Time
-
My personal karaoke fave: "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes (this song is awesome when sung by a dude).
YOU'RE IN LUCK MY FRIEND (http://fittedsweats.blogspot.com/2007/04/whats-up.html)!!!
-
Rush - Freewill
YES! I'm glad someone suggested a Rush song.
-
i would do anything for love - but i won't do that.
-
Rush - Freewill
If Tom chooses not to decide on a song, he still has made a choice.
A couple campy selections
- If I Could Turn Back Time
- All I Wanna Do is Make Love To You
In a nod to NJ native Sinatra and punk stylings, you could do
- My Way (sid vicious style)
-
Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
KISS - Black Diamond
EDIT:
Perhaps "The Kid is Hot Tonite" would be a more appropriate Loverboy song.
-
The Wings, Jet would be fun with a big sing along.
-
The Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine
-
I was thinking Helen Wheels by Wings. Thats a great song. Wings are so good.

but I'd also love to hear Tom do Waterloo by ABBA.
-
Perhaps an ELO song. I love the idea of "Telephone Line," but b/c that's probably a bit too slow, maybe "Livin' Thing."
-
Dio - Rainbow in the Dark. Just kidding.
I was thinking a Bond theme would be amazing. Live and Let Die? Technically a slow song I guess.
I liked Chas's pick: Surrender. That's appropraitely epic. I can tell you from countless karaoke experiences it's rough to hit the high notes. What about Auf Weidersehen?! The handful of times I saw Cheap Trick they would close out a show with either Dream Police or Auf Weidersehen. Either of those would be stellar, though I love Auf Weidersehen.
-
"Common People," by Pulp.
...No?
"Dead End Justice," by the Runaways surely!
-
Get Philly Boy Roy to do the new Hooters song, "I'm Alive" as a duet:

My personal karaoke fave: "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes (this song is awesome when sung by a dude).

Come on, how much do you want to see a video of Tom Scharpling at the bottom of that webpage?!
-

They used to be called just "Tramp" until they wrote THIS song.
Please Tom, consider this classic.
-
Search and Destroy by the Stooges

-
"Common People," by Pulp.
Ha. My girlfriend said the same thing when I asked her about this thread.
-
The Beatles - The medley at the end of Abbey Road
AC/DC - For Those About To Rock, We Salute You
Phillip Glass - The Grid (complete version)
-
Pinball Wizard or The Seaker.
-
The Beatles - The medley at the end of Abbey Road
That would be AWESOME.
-
Phillip Glass - The Grid (complete version)
I love it!
-
Cheesy but good singing songs:
Young Turks by Rod Stewart
Easy Lover by Phil Collins
...I'm sure I could think of others, but I'm also pretty sure Tom wouldn't pick them.
-
"Don't Mess With My Toot Toot" - the Denise LaSalle version
-
Cold as Ice by Foreigner
-
casting my vote for some Seger: "Hollywood Nights" is a rocker.
-
The polls are closed! The song has been figured out and submitted, and all parties are excited.
It is an epic. It is awesomely over the top. That's all I can say right now.
Tom.
-
Night Fever? Running Up That Hill? SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE?!!?
-
If any DJs are undecided, I strongly suggest "Dead End Justice."
-
Maybe for future installments:
30 Days in the Hole/Humble Pie
Do Ya/The Move
Maggie May/Rod Stewart
-
I'm late on the draw.
But I thought 'The Temples of Syrinx' would totally kill
-
Did anyone suggest Danzig's "Mother?"
-
I would've done "Do Ya" but John Allen did it a few years ago, so he owns that song forever in my mind.
The choice I made will be both stirring and stupid.
Tom.
-
Perfect!
-
If it's Billy Joel's historical list song, I recommend a substitution for the JFK line.
F-M-U
blee blee bloo
What else do I have to do?!
-
The choice I made will be both stirring and stupid.
I think I want that printed on a t-shirt.
-
Damn, too late. But maybe for next year, I'd like to hear "Radar Love" by Golden Earring.
-
Please give us a hint, Mr. Scharpling.
-
what thread had the video's of Tom's past songs?
i think there was one of Born to Run and one of A Quick One While He's Away
-
Born to Run is on youtube.
-
Born to Run is on youtube.
"A Quick One" is at the bottom of this page (http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/03/post.html)
-
Duh
ABBA medley
-
Victoria by the Kinks.
-
I know, he's singing "Lola" -- only it's the (friend of Best Show) Weird Al parody "Yoda" from the Dare to Be Stupid album. See, that's why he said the performance would be "stupid."
Oh I did it, I cracked the code! Once you learn to see the clues it all becomes so obvious.
-
One day, I would like to hear him do all 28 minutes of Genesis's "Supper's Ready". Or Close To the Edge!
I actually did hear a song on the radio I thought he could tear up, though, the old Motown nugget "Reach Out, I'll Be There".
-
Sorry about the double post, but I just remembered the epiphany I had during yesterday's drive home. For a future marathon, Tom should Space Oddity AND Peter Schilling's Major Tom AND Ashes to Ashes all in sequence.
Hell, if he got really industrious, he could do every song reputed to refer to Major Tom (like Elton John's Rocket Man.)
-
Revolution Blues - Neil Young
-
One day, I would like to hear him do all 28 minutes of Genesis's "Supper's Ready".
Oh, that's so good! If Tom doesn't perform "Supper's Ready" on the air, then I'm gonna perform it in the middle of Maplewood Avenue (while dressed like a giant flower).
-
Welcome to the Terrordome
Holy crap, this would be awesome.
-
(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g69/forrestsimmonms/JukeBoxHero.gif)
Agreed!
-
Damn, too late. But maybe for next year, I'd like to hear "Radar Love" by Golden Earring.
Oooohhh... that's good Jasongrote. Or he could sing "Twilight Zone." If Tom hasn't sung that one sometime already (he probably already thought of it), he could nail it. It would kill. So would "Radar Love." Or something by the Scorpions, like "The Zoo," might be an opportunity to add some campy metal weirdness. Tom could pull it off, and it would be funny, but if I tried it, it wouldn't.
Stirring and stupid? I can't wait!!!
-
yeah, if we're getting in early on the 09 list...
ian dury and the blockheads - hit me with your rhythm stick
-

Thanks, Fido.
I think I know what it is. But I'm not telling.
-
Best Golden Earring song you've never heard: "The Vanilla Queen." Check it out. Awesome horns at the end.
-
Here's a mix of some of my favorite suggestions so far and a few personal ones:
Bob Seger - "Hollywood Nights" (http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=f7ad314975)

And one for Dutch:
Charlie Daniels Band - "Still in Saigon" (http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=f7ad314975)
*I will donate $100 to hear this one live
-
Hows about singing " The Nights on Broadway " by the Bee Gees.
That song is deep.
-
That's my favorite stalker song. So I nominate Spike to sing it.

You will donate $100 because the show has been awesome all year.
Zung!
Tom.
-
Too late, I know: I second "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seger.
-
Tom already sang along to it once before but I like pun: "I FOT in a war" by Belle & Sebastian
-
She's as Beautiful as a FOT
-
30 Days In The Hole/Humble Pie -he sang a bit of it when back announcing it one show. I wanted more.
Radar Love/Golden Earring
Fernando/ABBA -there should be an ABBA song, this is my vote
Carpet Crawlers/Genesis
The Motels/Only The Lonely -yes, really
Simon and Garfunkel/any song off Sounds Of Silence. I dare you.
Carol King/It's Too Late
-
I think Fernando might be the winner. Maybe too slow, but it hits all of Tom's other requirements and it would be really great.
-

I was thinking of Thin Lizzy's "Look What the Wind Blew In", but "Cowboy Song" is good too.
-
Good girls don't. The Knack.
-
Wait, I scratch my earlier nomination for Good Girls Don't and suggest Mott the Hoople's All the Young Dudes. It's an epic song. I've been listening to it on the excellent Juno soundtrack and the song really packs the big punch Tom is looking for.
-
If Tom would consider Mott the Hoople (maybe for the 2009 marathon), might I suggest Hymn for the Dudes? I can barely even imagine what it would be like to have Tom drop to a whisper for "You ain't the nazz.....you're just a buzz.....some kinda.....temporary" before the band roared back in for Tom to scream the last verse.
God, I think I am having some sort of vision
-
How 'bout the Husker Du cover of Eight Miles High?
or for that big-ass prog epic you've always wanted to belt out, how about
the original King Crimson -or- the cover version by Asia* of The Court Of The Crimson King?
* on Fantasia - Live in Tokyo
-
Tom.. Would you consider a duet of SHOOP by Salt N Pepa with me? I know the whole song, I promise.
::chuckles::

Me: Tom, How much would I need to pledge for you to sing 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago?
Tom: hmmm let's see: 25 times 6 is 150 then add 4. One hundred fifty four dollars. US.
Me: sold!

Oh, snap, a fix of a fix by the original poster. Well... played.
-
Jesus Christ Superstar / Act Two, "King Herod's Song"
-
Takin' Care of Business by B.T.O. :-[
Maybe next year!
-
American Pie
-
I wish I'd thought to suggest this earlier, but perhaps for some future Marathon Finale or Best Show episode, I'd like to hear Tom take things to the next level and hit Dolenz where it hurts by doing a cover of Goin' Down.
-
Medley of:

-
Flashdance...What A Feeling - Irene Cara
...while wearing leg warmers.
-
Jesus Christ Superstar / Act Two, "King Herod's Song"
That would make for some interesting radio/backlash.
-
My first exposure to Tom was through the Hoof and Mouth. Being your run of the mill FMU listener, drawn by all the excellent music, I was treated to Tom for the very first time when he raised the roof (imo) with his rendition of Paradise by the Dashboard Light. I must have listened to it 10 times, it amused me so much. :D
-
I know Tom's made his choice already, but "Hollywood Nights" would be AMAZING.
And since he likes Belle & Sebastian, he could do "Your Cover's Blown" too.
