Title: A Thank You to The FOT Community
Post by: pmart on February 20, 2008, 05:23:13 PM
Having just received my FOT stickers in the mail (a veritable funpack) in lieu of the now defunct FOT membership cards, I would just like to take a second to thank the man himself for his generosity. I for one prefer the idea of the stickers, because as a virtual non entity of the FOT community (meaning I'm afraid to call and I never post), I can affix them proudly to all of my various surfaces like a badge of honor.

Cheers to you, FOT's. In a very strange way it seems like I know each of you that call week in and week out. I look forward to hearing you each Tuesday. You make me laugh, you make me cry, and sometimes, you just make me feel a little better about the world. Special props to Erika -- having grown up in Baltimore, I felt a nice sense of localized pride when you were named a Supercaller.

Don't be afraid to call. Just think, every time a good fella like you calls, a mutant like James gets a busy signal. Keep that in mind and balance it against the fear you feel while you're considering dialing the number. Trust me, I know - I was scared to death the first time I called, but it gets easier.

I Kid! I'm from Silver Spring, and I'd much rather drive a little father for a night out in B'more than DC.

Goldschlager before Kool-Aid - You've Got it Made.
Kool-Aid before Goldschlager - Flattened like Frogger.

When did you apply for yr FOT membership? I sent my info in a little over a month ago, and I am concerned that I am being left off the ranks because my answers to the questionnaire were kind of corny. I also lied by putting "good communication skills, both written and verbal" under my skillset. As anyone who's heard my calls so far can surmise, this is only half true at best.

I only try to call when I have something interesting to say, per ye olde Ollie Ferranockin intro. This backfired on me last night, when I realized I had a clear answer for the topic (Daft Punk) but no real fascinating insight behind my "now I get it" turnaround, and I got (non-GOMP) cut off after my schticky delivery of the topical declaration before I could throw in my slogan suggestion. But don't let this deter you, as I have the notion that you, pmarton, will likely have just as much if not more to contribute to the board and/or on-air FOTness as anyone else here.

Also: pledge! I plan on it.

I applied like a month ago, give or take. To be honest, I sort of forgot that I had, which made this a fairly pleasant surprise after a relatively boring day at the office.

My reasons for not calling is that I usually don't listen live (gasp!). I used to teach Tuesday nights at a college outside of FMU's broadcast range and found that I had gotten really use to enjoying the podcast during my daily commute. While it eases the pain of North Jersey traffic, the downside is my "hilariousness" continues to go unnoticed.

My initial post might have come off as sort of like a "group hug" moment, but it dawned on me (like an NPR "driveway moment" sans Ira Glass) recently how integral the real life audience has become to the show (like when 35 year old August called in a couple of weeks ago) and as a listener who doesn't really participate in the process, I just feel like we owe a thanks, if nothing else to counteract the James' of the world.

ps -- yes, I will be Baltimore for ever. Though, now with the Wire, apparently everyone is a Baltimore expert. Though I doubt all these experts have been mugged as many times...

I doubt this is the case. It can take awhile. I think it was a couple of months between when I filled out the questionnaire and when my membership card actually arrived, so don't worry that you're being left out.

We get it, Julie. Classic oppositional defiance. You just keep doing what you're doing, it makes you lovable, like, say, Archie Bunker, or Fred Sanford.

I really like your calls, by the way. And Yeti really needs to meet Dogmo.

Regarding fear of calling:

I get so nervous before I call that I have to jump up and down when I'm on hold to let the stress out.  I actually get more nervous now because of one awful call last year where I said something that made little-to-no sense to anyone other than me. Tom responded with, "What? [in that high-pitched way]" followed by "You flamed out."

BUT, after a year of calling since then (What kind of masochist am I?), I sense that all is well again.

The stupid part is: WHY DO I EVEN CARE?!  There's not that much on the line.  This is isn't Sophie's Choice.

nervous energy.  pretty much.  i dont see the fear in calling (without the exception of having nothing to say/contribute), even with a GOMP in sight.  look who calls in every week and gets GOMP'd- no problems there.

That's YETTA, and she certainly needs to meet Dogmo. My goal is to arrange a guest appearence. Maybe the Best Show will go to the dogs.

Perhaps he just doesn't like that strange spaghetti sauce you people out there pass off as chili...

I kid. Except the part about the chili --  Cincinnati chili really is disgusting.

Just for the record: I am the one who sends out the cards/stickers, and I don't reject anybody. If you send me your full address, I'll send you the stuff.

I try to do a mailing once a month, but often it takes longer, so I end up sitting down once every few months to spend a full day sending them out. I'm not complaining though. It's the way it is.

Get ready to pledge everybody.

Tom.

Good to know. It is the personal touch that gives things like this extra quality. Also getting all antsy about free stuff is kinda lame. (Implicating myself here and nobody else.)

Re: pledging -- I am strapped in. My helmet is on. (It is blue metalflake.)

I got my stickers the other day. The whole family rejoiced. Because THIS IS FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT!
