Ted asked me to ask you what songs he should play. He's already got a couple surprises lined up, but now's the time to make your suggestions!
So make them in this thread!
Thanks.
Tom.
-
An acoustic "Sons of Cain" would be awesome.
-
Thin Lizzy, "Waiting for an Alibi". Also "Chain Fight Tonight".
-
Anything by Husker Du. or "Fine Brown Frame" by Lou Rawls
-
Black Coffee
-
No Action by Elvis Costello
Going Down To Liverpool by The Bangles
anything by Big Star
-
Carry on my Wayward Son by Kansas
-
Three Dog Night's "One Man Band"
-
Winner Takes It All - Abba
Unless this is what Tom will be singing
-
oh..."Chain Fight Tonight" is a really good call.
-
At heart, I'm a classic rock dummy:
People, Let's Stop the War - Grand Funk Railroad
What's Next to the Moon -AC/DC
Is It My Body - Alice Cooper
Victoria - The Kinks (he could be clever and medley it with Army Bound, which is obviously descended from this song)
It Came Out of the Sky - CCR
The Reason - Thunderclap Newman
-
I would love to hear him do his take on the Wire theme, "Way Down in the Hole."
-

Would a Tom Waits cover even be allowed?
Speaking of Wire, I think Teddy could do a nice version of either Reuters or Dot Dash.
-
Wowza!
"Thank You For the Music," ABBA
"Big Take Over," Bad Brains
"Thirteen," Big Star
Anything by The Clean
"Lodi," CCR
If he has a female accompanist/backup, "Contort Yourself," James White and the Blacks
"Gonna Never Have to Die," GBV
"Nutbush City Limits," Ike & Tina
"Living for the City," Stevie Wonder
"I Want to Take You Higher," Sly & The Family Stone
"Towering Infernos," The Green Arrows
"Don't Thank Me Baby, Thank Yourself," Betty Wright (incidentally, my response to Tom's thank you for my pledge - and it should be everyone's)
"Dick Clark," The Great Plains
"Kill A Dead Eagle," Old Skull
"Lightning," The Sea and Cake
"The Question is How Fast," Superchunk
"Over, Under, Sideways, Down," The Yardbirds
And I vote for the prior suggestions:
Victoria - The Kinks (he could be clever and medley it with Army Bound, which is obviously descended from this song)
Black Coffee
Thin Lizzy, "Waiting for an Alibi". Also "Chain Fight Tonight".
-
"Viva La Revolution" - The Adicts!!!
-
When he played Dirty Old Town in Providence it was amazing. I'd love to relive that moment.
-
Just thought of two that fit
Panic - the smiths
Ripple - Grateful Dead so at least there is one song AP Mike likes unless there is a love theme from Stroszek
-
ooh. panic by the smiths would be a really good one
-
A friend who's a huge Ted Leo fan but isn't familiar with the show said she'd like to hear any of the following Billy Bragg songs:
Levi Stubb's Tears
Valentine's Day Is Over
Shirley
Which Side Are You On
New England
Or either of the following Teddy originals:
Timorous Me
Ballad of Sin Eater
-
How about some Phil Ochs for the older FOT: "Draft-Dodger Rag," "Power and Glory," "One More Parade," "I Ain't Marching Anymore," or--a sentimental, nonpolitical favorite of mine--"The Highwayman"?

Oooh, yeah! Big ups to your friend, MoS.
-
Anything by Norse Savage is OK with me
-
"Live the Life" by The Oblivians
"Umbrella" by Rihanna (Hey, his Kelly Clarkson cover was pretty amazing, so why not?)
-
How about a Scott Walker song?
-
How about a Scott Walker song?
Plastic Palace People or Clara?
-
Donald Fagen - "The New Frontier"
-
I would suggest Neil Young - A Man Needs A Maid
But thats more of a song for piano.
-
a cover of Mother 13's "Wired" from the album "High Dive"
-
I second 'Chain Fight Tonight'.
Or something from Gentlemen's Agreement?
-
Cover the sopranos theme song to begin the show. If there is a webcam this year than everyone has to smoke cigars during it.
-
Cover the sopranos theme song to begin the show.
A medley of the Sopranos theme ("Woke up this morning" by Alabama 3), Way Down in the Hole, and one of the many Best Show themes would be awesome.
That, and Atlantic City by the Boss.
-
and this

or chommy mommy
either one
-
Pizza Party, fer fryin' out loud.
-
Pizza Party, fer fryin' out loud.
seconded
-
Sparks - "At Home At Work At Play"
-
Pizza Party, fer fryin' out loud.
YES
EDIT:
Wait, maybe you meant something else. I thought of Pizza Love, as sung by Mark Michaels, the publisher of Pizza Aficionado Magazine.
Here you go Ted:
I saw her standing there by the counter
shaking oregano on her slice
I couldn't take my eyes off here
her pants fit so nice
Our eyes met and I made my move
I grabbed her slice and took a bite
And we made hot sweet love
in the men's room all night
-
If a Tom Waits ban would rule out "Way Down In The Hole," then maybe "Move On Up" to honor Cutty and infuriate Mike.
Also, as a sequel to the brief Christmas show performance of On the Dark Side...something else by John Cafferty by way of Eddie and the Cruisers. Down On My Knees, Wild Summer Nights, Season in Hell...
-

Maybe Ted could blend the two and make the song his own, let's face it there's not much to Pizza Party.
-
The Billy Bragg thing sounds great...Greetings to the New Brunette being the one I'd want to hear most...
-
I want to hear "Take A Chance On Me" by Abba, but a cappella, with Tom and Patton and whoever else is in studio doing the low part (take a chance, take a chance, take a chance), and Mr. Leo doing the high parts (if you change your mind, i'll be first in line, honey i'm still free, etc.). Tom, you could also join the high parts, if you have enough others going low.
This would be sweeter than twizzlers!
-
These are all amazing suggestions, but I would love to hear "Alone Again Or" by...well...Love.
-
The Modern Lovers-- "I'm Straight"
A second vote for Billy Bragg--"New England"
Anything from The Replacements album Let It Be
I wouldn't be opposed to Ted Leo singing "When I Die" while Ben Gibbard eats a roll of paper towels. I kid, I kid.
-
Anyway You Want It by Journey
I could really see Ted Leo giving it his all. It's such a rave-up song.
-
Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks

I'd love to hear Teddy do the "oooohs"
-
Porcupine Pie or Cowboy Star (Edit) would be fontastic.
Bragg or Love would be great as well.
-

Nice one but I think The Oblivians and Calexico both have nailed this song to perfection.
-
Or maybe "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
-
Or "Alone Again" by Dokken.
-
I smell a medley!
-
Or maybe "A Wandering Minstrel I" by Gilbert and Sullivan.
-
Or maybe "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
Or "Alone Again" by Dokken.
Or Alone Again by Biz Markie.
-
Joanna Newsom's "Sawdust and Diamonds". Why the long face?
-
Mrs. Miller's version of "Green Tambourine" or "Sweat Pea".
-
I want to hear him do "ABBA on the Jukebox" by Trembling Blue Tears!

I don't get it.
ps - my full name? really?

Look at the subject line. I wasn't sure if Gib Bennard was from PBR's stint as A&R for WaWa Records or if you had coined it.
ps - my full name? really?
Yes, really. I didn't realize you kept your last name private, seeing as how you went by a portmanteau of your last name and another word, and you continue to go by this name elsewhere on the internets. I edited my post out of respect for your privacy. My apologies.
-

Definitely a Wursterism, but it's "Gibb Benson".
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Gibbard), he's still signed to Wawa Records. (I think Dan B did that (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,1054.msg10781.html#msg10781).)
-
His cover of Lungfish's "To Whom You Were Born" and "Come Baby Come" are favorite TL spins in my home.
-
"You Heard It First on MTV"
-

That's my proudest wikipedia moment.

Spinal Tap - Gimme Some Money (with backing vocals from Tom, Patton and Gibbard)
-
Soft Machine
We Did it Again
We Did it Again

There was a really good band in the 90's from Baltimore called Chisel. Ted Leo seems to sounds a lot like a watered down version of those guys, but still good in his own way. I wish he would play something from their Something New album.

Pssst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chisel_%28band%29).
-
I think you two might have just been zung.
-
I think Mr. Rockstar was as well. For shame!
-
Okay, this is odd, but I had a fragment of a dream last night, wherein a voice coming from the radio (as the show was in progress) asked what Ted was going to play next. The answer was Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo".
I woke up, the dream ended and I never got to hear it. Now I'd like to...
-
"Viva La Revolution" - The Adicts!!!
"Clown Time is Over" -E.C.
-

Why you gotta be a dick about it?
-

I concede.
-
Has anyone suggested "Common People" yet? If so, I second it.

I considered it, but William Shatner and Ben Folds kind of ruined it for me.
But, hey, I first it. Or third it.
-
FREEDOM BOMBS!
-
Christian Brothers
-
Hi,
My request is:
T Rex--- Cosmic Dancer, or any T Rex
-
Is this too obvious: Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio"?
-
Or "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush?
Also, I would not be averse to hearing "Come Sail Away." Styx FTW!
-
Is this too obvious: Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio"?
In that case: My Radio by LL Cool J!
"I can't live without my radio!"
-
Didn't you ask for that last year, Laurie? I seem to remember an Enya confusion.
-
Didn't you ask for that last year, Laurie? I seem to remember an Enya confusion.
There was also some confusion about it being a Kansas song:
"First of all, guys, 'Come Sail Away' is Styx. It's Dennis DeYoung, not Steve Walsh. Ew, brother. Learn your rock. I thought this was a rock 'n roll station?!" -- Tom, taking Ted Leo and Laura Cantrell out of Kansas and back to school
Laurie's request went unfulfilled, so I posted a YouTube clip of it in the recap (http://www.recidivism.org/2007/03/love_and_money.html). Perhaps this will be the year. Maybe Millie Kentner and Jeffrey Rosso will be on hand to sway in its glory.
-
Angel Eyes would be a stirring tribute (http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/03/obit.healey.ap/index.html)
-
Jeff Healey - what a loss. He was in my favorite Swayze movie.
-
Love Gun.
Nuff said.
-
I thought Jeff Healey was killed by Bill Gates back in 2006 ???
-
long time listener, first time poster...
"So It Goes" Nick Lowe
"Rip It Up" Orange Juice
"Blockbuster" the Sweet
whatever he sings, it is going to be awesome, Teddy can't fail.
-
Autograph - "Turn Up the Radio"
The Kinks - "Brainwashed"
-
Seconds on "So It Goes" and didn't somebody say "Cowboy Star(edit)"
"What do ya mean it's not gonna be the first single?"
-
Did somebody say "PORCUPINE PIE"!!!!
Also, I second "Rip It Up." I love Orange Juice -- the band and the beverage.
-
Rock and Roll Heaven
Timothy - The Bouys
Bertha Butt Boogie
DOA - Bloodrock
-
"Fighting My Way Back" - the other TL
-
I vote for a Tommy and Teddy duet on Ghostface's "Run." Teddy can be Jada, obv.
-
Joe Esposito - You're the Best (around)

-
Ted should kick it Jersey Boys style:
"Dawn (Go Away)" by the Four Seasons
or non-Jersey..
"Something About You" by Boston (I gotta get someone to sing this!)
-
How about Michael Bolton's heavy metal anthem Everybody's Crazy?

He'd have to include the "Normal is something people are until you get to know them" intro.
-
Anyone know whether tonight's show will be archived? I'm going to miss a lot of it, given my work schedule...
Thanks!
-
Last year's was, so this one likely will be as well.
-
Last week's show was archived and there was a podcast, so this one probably will as well.
As for "What should Teddy sing?" suggestions, has anyone said "Alternative Ulster" by Stiff Little Fingers yet?
-
I wish I requested It's a Love Thing
-
Thank you Teddy for playing RUSH for me!! It was awesome!
-
Thank you Teddy for playing RUSH for me!! It was awesome!
You're more than welcome! I only wish I could've pulled off the "Way Down in the Hole" ending a little better (I was craning my neck to see if I could catch Mike's face, and to no avail, alas.)
-

Good times.
Thanks Ted, Patton and Ben.

You got away with doing a Tom Waits cover in studio. That's a Kennedy assassination-level coup. Cheers!
-
The world needs more Rush/Tom Waits medleys. Thanks, TL (and Patton and Ben).

Maybe he was doing the Season 4 cover of the choir? That was amazing, and especially worth it for Tom's reaction of "Huh?"
