My band is recording right now and we're looking at microphones. Is there anyone here that is knowledgeable and can recommend a good mic for string/vocals in the studio?
The time came to talk about equipment we needed and the four us us sat there and said "I thought you knew about this kind of crap" at the same time. I'm sure whatever mic we stick in front of a PA will get the job done, but we have a great space at out disposal and I don't want to blow it with a recording that sounds like we tied a cell phone on a mic stand.

Shure SM-7 - good all-purpose mike for such things as you describe.
Michael Jackson recorded the "Thriller" album's vocals on one, so, you know...

That's great news! I snuck one into Vincent Prices coffin a while back, so we can do that collaboration I've been dreaming of.
The Shure mic's can be thrown against a brick wall and still work too. That seems to be the first point in every review I read about them. Like someone took a hammer to a a 3,000 dollar mic and was disappointed with the results. "We'll do better next time."
I prefer the Thriller salute to the dura-tuff reference.
Thanks!
