Hello all!
As part of our celebratory end of marathon blowout, the Hoof and Mouth Orchestra will be playing songs LIVE on the air tonight, with a variety of WFMU disc jockeys singing their favorite hits.
I will be one of them! What song will I do? Stay tuned and find out! 8-12 PM EST!
Tom.
-
They're doing it at Maxwell's, if anyone in Hoboken wants to get down there. Free entrance!
-
I really do kind of want to go over to Maxwell's, but I also really don't want to take a shower right now.
-
Bah, no one will notice, Forrest.
-
Forrest, I think I'm in your neighborhood. If you want to go in the next hour or so, PM me. Though I think I might have missed you, based on the time-stamps on this thread.
-
49 is the new 18, and Ken Freedman is the new Jeffrey Rosso!!!!
-
Just got back from this...I didn't get there until 11 or so (The Wire!) but it was a ton of fun, and Tom's song was sick. He's a really nice guy too.
-
I couldn't tune in! What did he sing?! The suspense is killing me!
-
"L.A. Woman."
-
Sarah,
Is your response the equivalent of Tom playing "Heat of the Moment" by Asia when someone makes a music request, or did he really do "L.A. Woman"?! :)
-Jon
-
He really did LA Woman, and let me tell you, he absolutely tore the house down. I was really happy I stuck around so late.
That's one of my top songs of all time. Not only is it great in its own right, but the "Mister mojo rising..." part is the 99 Mets' anthem. Somewhere, Mike Piazza smiled.

The big sunglasses! Awesome!
-
Looking back, I can't believe I almost didn't go to this. I got to slap hands with a couple FOT, Tom was awesome, Terre T was just plain bad ass, and all at no cost. It pays to not be lazy!
-
Holy shit does Terre T's shirt say THERE WILL BE GOMPS?

-
I think so! And in an old timey font, no less.
PS: Space Champion, FTW! ;D ;D ;D
-
It was as pretty much TOTALLY AWESOME! The band, the singing, Tom essentially embodied Jim Morrison, TT was Phenomenal, & Dusty and Mike Lupica were SO cool! The FMU DJ's are a bunch of serious rock stars! THREE CHEERS FOR WFMU!
-
Lupica is sorely missed (by me). I hope he makes his way back on to the weekly schedule.
-
Are videos going to be posted?

Are videos going to be posted?
During her show this morning, Liz "Smooch On Sight" Berg said there would be videos posted on the blog sometime soon.
-
i believe the drummer in tom's pic is wearing a 'there will be gomps' tee shirt as well. is this a preview of things to come? or a limited edition? either way it's pretty awesome.

PS: I thought all the ladies were sexy.

Goddamn, I just told Forrest that I was glad I didn't go to this (and honestly, given the day's obligations, I stand by that), but what a great fucking time this would have been.

Yeah - I wish I could've gone, too. I feel like my marathon experience was incomplete.
You know what I did instead? I went and listened to a lecture on the Revolutionary Communist Party's "New Synthesis," which I'd committed to attending a while ago. It was pretty great (if ultimately unconvincing, in light of my cynicism about human nature and the thus problematic transition period of the necessary Dictatorship of the Proletariat), but ew buoy, would I have rather been in the front row for the MsFits, drinking whiskey and listening to rock, instead of in the tenth pew, holding in my pee and listening to sqwauk...

They played Budgie at the lecture, TL? Wow! Those Revolutionary Communists sure know their second-tier 70s rock!
-
I really like the idea that they took it out in to the public. Could turn into quite the yearly social event/party if they keep doing it like this.
Either way, yeah ~ FMU's marathon is amazingly fun. I actually listened to the station more than usual the past two weeks just because I was enjoying all the shennanigans.

Ew boy, TL, you just bumped Julie Klausner in my #1 FOT-I-feel-bad-for-for-what-they-had-to-sit-through spot (there has to be a more elegant way to put that). Though I am curious about this "New Synthesis" business, despite being somewhat skeptical about the RCP in general. The inevitability of socialism is the one thing I don't really buy about historical materialism.
I'd ask you to expound on it, but it feels almost criminal to boring-up this particular thread with to two-way Marxism blather. Maybe I'll Google it later if I remember.
Back on topic, I just started volunteering at WFMU and am bummed that I had to miss the entire marathon because of this Composer-Librettist Studio (though it was worth every second). I did a lot of vicarious listening. I mean, I was actually listening. But the experience was vicarious.
-

Really quickly (because I don't want to wonk up this thread, either), that's one of the major new shifts in the thinking - recognition of the fact that it's NOT inevitable. There seems to be a lot of Marcuse in their new approach to Marx, which is what I really enjoyed about the talk. I went at the request of a friend, not necessarily of my own volition, b/t/w, but I did, definitely, appreciate a lot of what was said.

I like that Marcuse. I'll see if I can dig anything up about it online, and if not I'll probably be back to ask, maybe on a different thread. OK, commie time is over. Back to the fun, everybody! (Blows whistle)

Do you guys go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao? Because an old acquaintance of mine has this saying about people like that.

One of my main displeasures with the talk, actually, was, even while the speaker was asserting how important it is to emphasize the failures of Mao, Stalin, etc., he was really giving them a free pass on a lot of things, illustrating your friend's point, I think...
"But if you go carrying pictures of Super Caller Dave/...?"
-
"But if you go carrying pictures of Super Caller Dave/...?"
"....you're gonna get more action than Flavor Flav."

Only when I'm looking to make it with someone. It seems to have limited effectiveness.
-
Also, Zizek was at the CUNY Grad Center tonight. I almost went. I kinda like how he half-jokingly rehabilitates those guys. I really want to read him book on Robespierre.
-
Wow...just heard Tom do "LA Woman". Man...he left me breathless. Really nailed it, in a completely legitimate way. So cool!

Folksnake,
Where did you hear it? I really want to, but am not sure where to find it? Is it archived on FMU's site somewhere? Did someone post it somewhere on the message board?
Thanks,
Jon

It already is, Ted. It already is.
Wait, whaaat?
-
Samir, I dare you to actually get this printed on a pair of unda-wears. That you'd then, you know, wear.
I think this idea strikes the right balance between hilarious and just plain awful!
-
I kinda wish The Old Codger had appeared at the finale.

Really? He's not on the playlist. Or are Mac and the Old Codger the same person?
-
I would actually like to know who the Old Codger really is, just because he sounds just like the old man character on The Frogs' albums.

Don't sweat it--just enjoy!

top, because i still listen to his version of LA Woman, at least once a week. I also despise the Doors.
So epic.

First round of finale videos are posted to the WFMU blog.

Tom always brings the epic. Spinning tired old rock standards into gold.

This is what it looks like when you are delivering the mother-f'ing ROCK.
-
Is that Stephen King on drums?
-
I'm looking at past and present Hoof and Mouth videos, and I must say, while Bryce and Chris Stubbs and Ken are consistently breathtaking in their attention to flashy detail, Tom tackles epics. Those guys are artists to be sure, but Tom is a hero. "LA Woman" "A Quick One" "Born to Run" -- who else would even consider these barnstormers?
If Tom is wondering how he might confound everybody by going in the other direction -- away from bombast, looking inward -- how about "Let it Down"? Minus the wall of sound, of course. Just voice, breath, and heart.
