Title: Sequels that were better than the originals.
Post by: Phantom Hugger on March 12, 2008, 05:42:43 PM
Watching Gene Hackman in The French Connection 2 not only cemented my opinion that he is one of America's finest actors, but how that film is 100 times better than the snooze that was the original.

If you consider it a sequel, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was much better than the Temple Of Doom.  If not, I think the original, slow zombie, Dawn Of The Dead is better than Night.

Wayne's World 2
[Controversial? Think about Cassandra's dad, Chris Walken, "That's a Unix book" and Del Preston].

it's probably the best action movie ever.

Also, the stuff with Jim Morrison and the weird naked Indian is golden. I second the motion.

Don't agree with PH about Frenchie 2! I think 2 is lame as hell.

Aliens
Godfather II
T2
Empire Strikes Back

Obvious choices perhaps, but there's not a whole lot of great sequels... if anything, this thread reminded me of how many awful, awful sequels I've seen in my life.

X-Men 2, Spider-man 2 and you could make a case for Superman II and Blade 2 (which contains a scene where a vampire suplexes a guy through the floor) as better than the first movies in their series. So there may be a special case for comic book-inspired movies.

Also, Grease 2 smokes Grease. All good-hearted people know this.

I'm not sure if Wayne's World 2 is better, but I like the cases being made and I think I could come over to that side. It might be the most unexpectedly good sequel.

I still endorse your Podcast.

Plus: rewatch the kicking heroin scene. I have always hated the 'kicking heroin' scenes/montages in all other movies save for this one.

Hell yes.  Bruce Campbell would be flipping burgers right now if it weren't for that movie specifically.  The original Evil Dead would have been long forgotten without the sequel.

True dat.

Road Warrior, Empire Strikes Back, Evil Dead 2 and T2 are the benchmarks, here. Aliens I gotta disagree with - that first one is scary as shit. #2 is awesome, too, but I don't think they really compare on the same level - they're different kinds of movies.

I was flipping around the other night and hit upon Godfather 1 on TV, right in the middle of that whole sequence in the middle when Michael goes to Italy and the plot comes to a cold stop while he spends like 20 minutes dicking around the countryside, marrying the girl, and that she gets killed and he comes back to America and picks up the plot like nothing ever happened... I know it's a complete given to say that Part 2 is better than part 1, but man, watching just that sequence underlined it for me yet again.
