You think they'll make it?
-
no
-
They've had a lot of people sign up already, so I'd say: yes.

what do you mean by "make it"?
-
Who do they think they are, the Kid From Brooklyn? Now that's worth paying for.

Oh, I don't have any inside information. But from the thread on AST, theres a few pages of people saying "I signed up!" So I imagine it's going well so far.
I suspect they'll lose about half of their listenership, but the other half paying $20 is pretty good money.

ah, I see
I wonder why all the shows are so secretive with their podcast numbers.
-
I don't see them getting half their listenership. I could see half of their hardcore fans but what they're doing will turn of the casual fan.
although, it will be interesting to see. I don't like the implications if the succeed. but, I like free shit.
-
I imagine they'll lose more like 75-90% of their current listenership. Jesse Thorn said that about 1% of his podcast listeners donate anything.
-
Well we wish them a lot of luck.
-
Apologies for being unhip, but what is NNF?

the podcasted Jimmy Pardo vehicle, Never (Not) (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,2007.0.html) Funny

Never Not Funny, a podcast hosted by Jimmy Pardo and produced by Matt Belknap.

Your number is probably closer.
-
They have probably between 5-10k listeners, so if 500 listeners pay, thats still $10,000, which while not being a full time salary for two people, is quite a bit of money for essentially talking for an hour and change a week. It's at the least a good supplement.
I think that they will get more than 10% though. Jesse asks for donations which is I can't see people caring about as much. Also, his show is the kind of show that gets the more casual listener.
As for what it portends for content on the future, it seems like every podcast that I've listened to either begins charging or making money in some way or ends up petering out.
-
are donations to jesse tax deductable? I wonder how hard it would be to make it so?

No; I dunno, probably harder than not declaring it at all.
Eric Luxury, I like your math and I hope it works out.
-
If Tom ever asked for donations, I think he would get about $94,000.
-
prove it.

I was thinking of paying for NNF. But then I realized that I have way too much free stuff to listen to, some of which I enjoy a great deal more than that podcast. Plus I haven't gotten through the Best Show archives. I have plenty of laffs already on my plate.
I probably spent more on the Best Show by pledging, though, than I have for any other single media product. I'm starting to make up for all the illegal stuff I've downloaded, I guess.
-
so paying for something you enjoy somehow pays off a debt for something you have stolen from somebody else?
-
why am I such a dickbag?
-
dickbag-ness aside, it's hard to see what else you can do to make up for years of pirating besides starting to pay for stuff you like. It's not like I'm going to mail a check to King Crimson for that mega-torrent I downloaded and deleted.

Even though I once podcasted NNF, I could never make it through an entire episode without getting really bored or annoyed. I really don't know who is coughing up cash to listen.

I wasn't going to be the first to mention it, but I tried to listen a couple of times and could not get into it.

I really enjoyed the first season with Mike Schmidt (I may be spelling that wrong). Now, it really depends on who the guest is. Some shows I think are pretty good (with PFT, Maria Bamford, Todd Glass) and the others I just can't get into. I certainly don't plan on paying for a whole season of NNF. I think that there will be an option to buy individual episodes. If there's a guest I'm into, I might buy that specific show.
-
I think it was a mistake, but I wish them the best of luck.

No way am I paying to listen to those dudes bullshit for an hour at a time. They're giving away 20 min. for free, right? Experience has taught me that there's about 20 min. of amusement per show in the first place.
That show always makes me feel like I'm sitting in a room with a white carpet, wearing sweatpants and socks, eating hot wings on a Sunday. In other words: Cheap Thrills.
NNF: It's Ovah!
-
you better be pretty damn entertaining to make people come out of pocket
for a podcast. I'm interested to see what happens.
-
I had a twinge of regret for not diving in to the pay format yesterday, but today I see their first pay-to-play guest is McDonalds-bringing unfunny man Dave Holmes.
Now the regret is ova.

Having had a hernia operation recently and a lot of down time to listen to stuff, I've gotten hardcore into the show. I've pretty much exhausted season 2 in a couple weeks. I enjoy it a lot! I'm a fan of people talking, I guess.
I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for this just yet, I've only been a fan for half a month, most of which was spent on vicodin. I think I'd be more willing to pay 20 bucks when the whole season is complete, kinda like how they sell season 1. Or, go halvsies with another reluctant fan. In fact they should start a campaign to get less enthusiastic people to sign up for it. It's half-stealing but they'd probably get more subscriptions that way.
