As soon as they get rid of the high fructose corn syrup (http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=77), somebody can bring one to me, too!
-
They did! They're using cane sugar, as Jesus intended.
-
I'm so glad there's no high fructose corn syrup in beer, my drink of choice.
-
Well right on, then.
Also, very glad there's no HFCS in the auld uisge baugh.
-
I don't think I know what auld uisge baugh is .. ?

I'm going to venture a guess that it's Irish whiskey and on that subject, don't buy Bushmill's.
They don't like some of us for all the wrong reasons.

Gross!
I think Coke is trying to go "healthy" too. I keep seeing billboards advertising "Coke Plus" with vitamins or something. And didn't 7-Up go "all natural" a few years ago (I shudder to think about how some of these companies define "natural)?
Rarely do I drink it, but when I want a soda, I want SODA. I'm not usually thinking of my health.

Anyone with me?

Ugh. I like the orange and lemon San Pellegrino drinks, but that Chinotto one is pretty nasty.

I'm with Beth. When it's soda time, give me some Mountain Dew or some similar abomination. After a few sips, I feel like Gilgamesh.
I drink water with a splash of OJ when I want to be healthy.
-
I'm going to go try that Chinotto later today. Is it anything like Manhattan Special?

That looks bad. Is it blood orange? Regular lemony is delicious.

I drink many sody pops a day. Mostly because coffee gives me the freak outs.
Cane sugar cola is delicious. I drank perhaps 90 sugar cane Cokes in a week in a small impoverished caribbean country where I was doing some work for a bit, and they are almost as energizing as Ezekiel cereal.

"Uisge baugh" is Gaelic for water of life. It's where the word "whiskey" comes from.
And being also part I-talian, I feel the need to weigh on on the Chinotto thing: I've tried to like it, but I always come back to "ew."
-
I used to drink 5-6 Mountain Dews a day and then about 2 years ago I went to Diet Mountain Dew again about 5-6 a day and then decided about 2 months ago that it's stupid that I'm not just drinking water and saving money while being healthy. Actually, I don't feel all that much healthier even though I drink about the same amount in water as I was drinking pop but I am saving money.
-
You should try Emergen-C. I'm addicted to the stuff. It's like a soda, but it's like 30 cents for a packet, and it's not sweet.
-
I got sidetracked from that article by a sidebar article about how Amy Winhouse's skin is in bad shape, how she's a cutter, and how Keith Richards, former "next-on-the-death-list" dude in Cocksucker Blues, figures she'll probably die if she don't clean up soon. And now I'm sidetracking you!
Check this shit out, it's bad news!

Clean it up Windhouse! Or you'll be dead!
-
yeesh. i am going to choose to ignore that picture, because i don't want to cry, and continue to discuss sodee.
i took my kids to see Horton Hears a Hoo yesterday (Shoot me in the head), and a woman in front of me in the food line ordered one of those keg-sized sodas. But what did she fill it with? Diet Coke. I believe that the "diet" element was cancelled out by the water-tower size.

This thread title keeps running through my head to the tune of "I Want to Break Free" by Queen.
Even for me, this is a pretty unessential post.
-
Chinotto rules, its very dry, sweet and bitter and orangey.
The Chinotto is a weird citrus fruit. I intend to grow a Chinotto tree one day and make the world's bitterest marmalade.

Drinking my first one now. I like it. Kinda like if you mixed Moxie with Campari.
-
Sounds great. And I'm not kidding. Too bad I'll never get my hands on a bottle.
-
I like the fizzy sweetness of soda (always with ice) but I often feel like it's just TOO sweet. And also high in calories (I'm getting fatter by the second).
I wonder why they don't make a light version of soda that just has more fizzy water and less sweetners/flavor. I'd be cool with that. Sometimes I drink half sprite and half seltzer and I like it! I don't need my soda to make my teeth ring.
I appreciate that Honest Ade has done this (watered down the drinks -- still refreshing but not so sugary) and they've also made their juice boxes for kids the same way. Although I just found out 40% of the company was purchased by Coca Cola.

Does anyone remember Apple Slice? That was my favorite soda but I haven't seen it around since I was a kid. Aside from Jones Green Apple Soda, anyone have recommendations for a good apple soda?
-
Off topic but inspired by the title of the thread: I just finished making up a batch of cat food and when I next looked in the mirror I found a hunk of chicken liver glued to my left eyebrow with blood.
Erika, why don't you mix seltzer/soda water with fruit syrup/juice? Tasty, fizzy, and far less fattening.
-
Oooh yeah I do that too! I like pear nectar and seltzer. Same with lemonade. I just wish there were somethin I could grab when I'm out and about, yaknow? Plus, I'd bet if kids grew up drinking less-sweet sodas they'd have less health problems but they'd still get to enjoy something tasty and fizzy.
I can't remember if I mentioned this here or elsewhere, but keep an eye out for Kosher for Passover-style coke and other sodas. They don't have corn syrup... made with regular sugar instead :) Still too sweet for me but I know my boyfriend, who is super anti-corn syrup, is excited about it.

When I want to assemble a soda, I soak freshly cut ginger chunks in an iced glass of seltzer water and stir in a few packs of those Sugar in the Raw packets. Much drier than Canada Dry. And for when I'm sick: a tea made of honey, white vinegar and hot water.
-
That is a lovely idea, Rainer. I'm going to start doing this, although I think I'll make up a batch of simple syrup for the sweetener. Or perhaps even make the simple syrup with ginger in it. Either way, you've freed me of the yoke of buying expensive organic ginger ale for my gin bucks, and I thank you.

I'm going to ignore the "now available in diet" part. Best sody I've ever had.

Virgil's root beer is top-shelf, although I slightly prefer this:

A former co-worker of mine had a root beer tasting party in 1999. The results were quite interesting:
http://www.gouldhome.com/events/rootBeerTasting.html
Quote:
"The conclusion to be learned is that price does not equate to taste. The two cheapest root beers ranked first and second. The most expensive brands ranked last."
But Gale's was not in the contest, Omar.
-
I wonder if that had anything to do with familiarity to A+W and corn syrup root beers. Maybe, that's what you come to think root beer is supposed to taste like and anything else would taste strange.

Yeah, I agree Gilly. I like Virgil's because it's not too sweet.
