I propose a FOT night out during the record fair.
I guess this has sort of happened the last four fairs but I think this time we should plan something.
Would anyone be up for this?
We'd need to decide whether to go on a Saturday or Sunday.
If we get a list of definite attendess and what day they'll be attending the fair if they can only make one day then we can choose the day that'd maximise the FOT volume.
Perhaps we could have dinner, go bar hopping, attend a comedy night or just simply get in a car and drive around hitting people's mail boxes with baseball bats (which I understand is a popular Amercian pastime).
-
Well, if we do it on Sat. you can all wish me a Happy Birthday (does this mean I drink for free?!). Also, you should bear this in mind while shopping at the fair.
-
I'm there. Just pick a night so that I can arrange my work schedule.
-
I'm working all weekend, but I can do something Saturday if it doesn't go too late. No idea what to do. Where do the hip kids hang out in Manhattan these days?
-
I'm so angry. I signed up for the SAT II's and then I realized it's the same day as the Record Fair. I may go on Sunday, but it's not definite.

Get your priorities straight son.

I know, I know. I'll be there in spirit.

I already booked a room at the Flatotel and tickets via Jet Blue. Yay!!
Also, I have tickets to The Slits/Apes/tons of other bands show, the Merge showcase (yay, Portastatic!), the Thrill Jockey showcase (hooray, Bobby Conn), the Decemberists/Alasdair Roberts show, Grey Gardens: The Musical, and Evil Dead I and II: The Musical. YAY!
-
Oh, I wish I could be there. Well, I could, I suppose, if I could bear the thought of traveling and being in a city. But I can't.
I guess my priorities need work, too.

how old are ya, sweetie :-* what are you drinking and more importantly what records/CDs DON'T you already own?
-
I'll tenatively say "yes" for Sat.
-
So saturday it is.
People in attendance -
My good self.
Megano De Murphy
Birthday Boy B. Buster (aka call screener Mike)
Stan the fish killer
Girl poster Laurie
Funny Guy Chris L
I'm sure this list will hopefully expand but maybe contract.
So what should we all do?
Personally I hope alcohol is involved but that's just me.
-
How about Otto's Shrunken Head? We can contact them about our little get-together and get some karoaoke action going. Of course, it's 21 and over, so Petey and little August could not attend. Hn.
-
I don't suppose it would be possible to charter a helicopter to fetch me? It could land in the parking lot of the abandoned sardine-packing plant next door and whisk me down to the nearest helipad, where I would expect to be met by a keeper who would attend to me for the duration of the festivities. I wouldn't need all that much care, really; I just wouldn't trust myself to be able to get from one place to the other: I'm far too out of practice dealing with crowds of people. And cars (three cars constitute a traffic jam in Lubec). I'm awfully good a drinking, though. And I'm sure I could borrow a baseball bat somewhere.
-
This sounds like a fun way to cap off a record fair, and I also vote for something alcohol related. I would suggest Winnie's, which is a low key, but mayhem friendly karaoke bar in Chinatown. It's a good mix of ironic karaoke people and asian pro karoek'ers (sp?).
-
ooh, i second winnie's. excellent choice.
-
did somebody say "alcohol"?

yeah i hope alcohol is involved too. preferably sierra nevada. jeebz
-
I'm hoping for some Zima, myself.
-
Does anyone know the hours of the record fair? I may be able to go after my SATs.
-
Put me down for Sat. night. Sounds like it'll be amazin'. I mean, you've got Associate Producer Mike, an assortment of FOTs to meet, ironic karaoke AND... now I hear there's gonna be Zima!
I can't wait!
-
So Winnie's it is. The Tiki place sounds good but it looks like they have 4 surf bands play the first saturday of every month which won't be much fun for anyone but their close friends.
I don't know what Zima is!
Glad to have you aboard spacebootz, I think we can count P-Shirt in too.
Mike, sorry i called you call screener and not associate producer.
Maybe we can get some comemorative t-shirts printed. Designs please.

"Jimmy, Winnie's was just a läff" ???

Zima is a clear malt liquor which tastes way to sweet

Zima. It zucks.
-
Breaking News!
We probably may or may not possibly have an extra special guest in attendance on our night out.
I can't reveal anymore but I can say it makes Dane Cook look like J.D. Salinger.
-
put me on the list. I need some socializin'.
-
I'm down for Saturday. Saturday? More like FUNDAY! Oh wait, that doesn't work. Can we change it to sunday, I want to do this joke I have planned.
-
Hey, nice job on the header, Jason! It needs some ZAZZ, though. Maybe some animated gifs? Rotating ones?
-
What date is this on?
-

Per Fangoria:
"Bruce Campbell will be making special appearances at the show’s first two regular performances, Wednesday, November 1 and Thursday, November 2 at 8 p.m. The actor will attend the shows and take questions from the audience as part of the Stages' "Talk Back" sessions."
-
SCORE! I have tickets to the Nov. 2nd show. Unfortunately, it may or may not conflict with the Thrill Jockey CMJ showcase, which will probably not have advance tickets. They haven't announced the start time for that show. Maybe it'll be an early one? God, I really, really, really want to see Bobby Conn, and my desire to see Califone only merits one modifier, so I guess I really want to see Califone. The other bands I could not give a fig about. I hope that's the play order. That way, there's a good chance I might be able to drop by and catch the only two acts I want to see. WOO.
Secret: I have two extra tickets to a Friday night performance at 11 of Evil Dead. The first person who promises to sing Porcupine Pie at Winnie's and/or with the Super Karaoke Fun Time Band (if they're appearing at this year's record fair, that is) and follows through will get the pair of tickets for FREE. If you don't follow through, you still get the tickets for free, but I'll be really disappointed in you. And I might expect compensatory candy.
-
Those tickets are now mine.
-
I'll race you, Jason. It's the first person to promise AND follow through.
-
You wanna go together?
We can hold hands like a pair of gays and nobody won't say nothing 'cause it's New York city baby!
-
I just realised something. If the show is on the second, but we're all meeting on the 3rd, how ARE we supposed to follow through?
:(
-
The extra tickets I have is for the November 3rd show, not the November 2nd show. The meet-up is on November 4th. Now, we cJason, you can share the tix with T. Rox, but I am expecting a "Porcupine Duet," and maybe also a "Pizza Party" duet. We can meet up somewhere at the Record Fair. I'll give you guys my cell phone number.
-
:'(
I'm not coming to the US now.
-
Don't kid around like that. Someone might take you seriously!
-
Ok, I am coming now.
-
Jason: easily swayed.
-
Ok kids.
The list now stands as -
Myself.
Megan.
B_Buster
Stan.
Laurie.
Chris L.
Emilyrides.
Spacebootz.
Kick the Bobo.
T-Rocks.
Paycheck and the delightful Mrs Paycheck.
So maybe also Dan B, I'm assuming Purple Shirt is coming and Petey may come for some food if we eat before Winnie's.
There's a slim chance that Tom will also make an appearance.
Now as you probably heard when he called in, I was attempting to get Spike on board as an extra special guest. Seeing as he can't make it should I attempt to get Captain Jack along? Please discuss this and express an opinion.
Also should eat before Winnie's?
Any latecomers?
-
Well, it is karaoke. Do we really want to see Stevie Blue rear his ugly head?
Re: Food. YES.
I'll be searching Zagat over the next few days. As it is, the only places I know I want to visit are Sugar Sweet Sunshine and Room 4 Dessert. Any tips? Please don't say Two Boots Pizza.
-
This restaurant is right around the corner from Winnie's
http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7113309
It's not fancy-schmancy, but the food is good, and they should be able to accomodate us all.
Also, if Winnie's is too crowded, a friend suggested this place as an alternative in the neighborhood: http://www.yellobarnyc.com/index.html
-
You are going to have such a good time. And I am so jealous.
-
You are going to have such a good time. And I am so jealous.
I'll call you from the bar and pass around the phone. Hilarity will ensue and all will marvel at my tiny new phone before dropping it.
-
In a greasy bowl of pho.
-
This meeting should tour. Come to Chicago, I have 3/5 of a house everyone can crash in!! We almost have plumbing!
-
I'm going Sunday! I have to skip a family gathering but it's with people I don't know so I don't really feel guilty.

I hate to break this to you Dan, but my miniscule cell phone is being dropped into a greasy bowl of pho on Saturday night, probably by Laurie. If not we'll bring the bowl to Winnie's to immerse my phone there.
Get with the program, son.

I have to work Saturday night, and I don't know what that means.
-
i'll be there too. who else is going to be there for jason forrest's performance at 1pm?
-
We lost Dan :( but we gained Paul :).
Is this Chester's Blanket Fort Paul?
-
Do you think I'll be able to buy the stereolaffs CDs there?
-
So are we all meeting somewhere within the record fair at some pre-determined time? Or are we meeting after it's over.. outside of the record fair..? ..has this already been discussed?

a lot of us know each other cause we've met at the last 5 or so record fairs so we wont need to organize a specific meet time or whatever.... but i guess for you n00bz it'll be a bit harder...
um, petey's the spazzy kid, purple shirt wears a purple shirt, jason's the british guy... um....
-
i'm coming saturday in case im not on the list. so is my brother. ask me for a free cd and drawing. i'll probably be wearing my chommy mommy t shirt and a gay fleece.

I will be attending the Record Fair this year... finally. It will be the first one I go to although I have been wanting to go for the past 6 years. It actually wasn't going to happen this year either because I had set up a show on the 4th with my band and Zom Zoms (who were recently in the WFMU studio) and some other fine bands. Although this event sadly had to be cancelled, it at least means that I'll be able to attend the Record Fair. Definately count me in for the after show shenanigans. But I think I'm going to cry when all of you go to the bar and I have to go home. :'( If only it were Canada, where I could legally drink in bars. Oh well, it'll be fun anyway even if I have to miss the last part of the night. I'll be able to finally get to meet some of you FOTs and hopefully Tom himself too... assuming he is going on that day as well. : :D
-
I'm sorry I can't make it. I remember I went a few years ago and had a lot of fun, drinking Yuenglings and making unsatisfying attempts at caricatures of people.
-
P-Shirt will be out of town but his lovely wife Lousia may attend.
Hall of famer Therese will also be in attendance, also she's single.
Maybe if we all wear our Best Show badges (if you have one) that way we'll be able to recognise each other with ease instead of walking around alone and then suddenly meeting at some point and time.
Can anyone work on so some fake ID for Petey and Sathington?
I don't think I have ever seen the StereoLaffs CDs for sale there but you can buy them at Kims on 8th street or maybe ask Tom.
-

Hahaha thanks... that'd be so great. I should probably seriously get one. Then again I could never pass for 21, I'm cursed looking so damn youthful.
What'd really be helpful though is if somebody might agree to giving me a ride to the restaurant and whatever. Because I'm going to be taking a bus into the city and then probably a cab the rest of the way to the Rec Fair. But I really don't have much money (luckily I start a new job on monday) and so being able to save some would be much appreciated. I'll probably be bringing a couple of friends with me too, I'm not sure. But, anybody with some extra car space who wants to help out a fellow FOT, your services will be duly noted.

Should be at the Record Fair on Saturday anyway.

Yay I'm leaving to hop on the bus soon. I hope there will be lot's of FOT's with cameras documenting the event. I would be, but I left my camera charger in Canada months ago and I ordered a new one that never came. Alright, see you in NYC.
-
Where and when is this event going down? I think I can make it and would love to meet everybody. Since it's so late maybe I will just show up to the record fair and see if I can get the details.
-
Have a wonderful time, FOT. And please take lots of pictures and post them for us stick-in-the-muds.
-
sorry guys, my plans to come down to Ye Olde Record Faire & the FOT night out kinda fell through.
next time, I'll definitely be there.

T Rocks' personal opinion of Winnies: FANtastic! It's always nice to have a kareoke bar where the kareoke doesn't work. The microphones that decide when they want to be on or off where a nice touch. They really had their act together with those 5 dollar Buds. Everything was perfect, especially the furniture that was falling apart. I hear that, when their system starts to break and work properly, they have a guy come in and fix it so the screen becomes a neo-cubist abstraction in the middle of your song again.
But you know what, all that doesn't matter. I had a great time.
ps:I came crawling home last night, like many nights before
I finally made it to my feet as she opened up the door.
And she said, "You're not gonna do this anymore."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."
She said: "Just bring your Friday paycheck, and I'll cash them all right here.
"And I'll keep on tap - for all your friends, their favorite kinds of beer.
"And for you, I'll always keep in stock, those soft aluminum cans.
"And when you're feeling macho, you can crush them like a man."
She said: "We'll rip out all the carpet, and put sawdust on the floor.
"Serve hard boiled eggs and pretzels, and I won't cook no more.
"There'll be Monday night football, on T.V. above the bar.
"And a pay phone in the hallway, when your friends can't find their car."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."
She said: "You'll get friendly service, and Friday atmosphere.
"I'll slip on something sexy, and I'll cut it clear to here.
"Then you can slap my bottom, every time you tell a joke.
"Just as long as you keep tipping, well, I'll laugh until you're broke."
She said: "Instead of family quarrels, we'll have a bar-room brawl,
"When the Ham's bear say's its closing time, you won't have far to crawl.
"And when you run out of money, you'll have me to thank.
"You can sleep it off next morning, when I'm putting it in the bank."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino, to decorate our home,
"So you can feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"When you and your friends get off from work, and have a powerful thirst.
"There won't be any reason, why you can't stop off here first."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.

Having lived for longer than I like to remember in a setting much like the one described in that poem--except I didn't charge enough for refreshments--I can say it wouldn't have been worth it even if I'd received proper remuneration. Indeed, even when the venue shifted, so I was no longer responsible for cleanup and my own expenses dropped considerably, it still sucked.
Dream on.
-
It was great meeting everyone and I'll post something more detailed later. My apologies to all those who couldn't make it for not getting more pictures, but I did get this gem with my phone:

Petey signing an autograph for Irwin.

Also, apparently there's no karaoke tune that can't be improved with a late 80's, Richard Marx-like video treatment rolling in the background. But I also had a great time and enjoyed meeting everyone.

I had a great time. Thanks, everyone!

So....yeah. Being that this thread is referring to last year's record fair, I'm definitely not going to treat it otherwise.
-
This was last year.

Whoa. And this thread made it all the way back to the top? It can't be stopped!
