Turns out I'm going to Las Vegas in about two weeks. It's work-related, and I'll only be there for a few days, but I'll probably have some time to explore the surroundings. I've never been there before. If anyone has any suggestions - restaurants, bars, stuff to do apart from the obvious - let me know.

The big casinos are great (Venitian, MGM, Wynn, etc.) but definitely hit up the smaller ones too. My favorite Vegas memory is playing $2 minimum roulette for like three hours one night (I seriously think it was called "Slots-s-fun"...it was next to Circus Circus). I definitely drank more in free Heineken than I lost betting.
Also check out the older casinos like the Golden Nugget and such. I forget what the road is called, but it's a cab ride away from the strip.

I made a side trip to Death Valley, and it was the perfect antedote to Vegas for me. It's quite a distance, but then the miles float by out there pretty quickly if you are a reasonably patient person, and it's kind of interesting to me (being from the Northeast) to see dramatically, starkly different desert terrain. I've visited Hoover Dam, which I found far less remarkable than I expected, but still very glad I did it. There are some beautiful mountain areas to the immediate west of Vegas and not far from town that might be worth exploring.
Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of Vegas itself. If it turns out that you are, maybe you should disregard the previous statements.
