WoW! So, KFJC 89.7 FM is what happen when we, the listeners don't support and pledge to WFMU!!!
I've done my part by pledging. But it seems that not enough pledge.
But enough with those sound effects.
-
I'm listening to the KFJC stream online now to see if I can hear The Kid that way. Just music so far, so who knows...
-
A George Harrison double rock block! Maybe Hot Rockin' Ronnie won afterall. :D
-
I hope this is some kind of April 1st foolishness.
-
Rats. I came home early for this?
-
What's going on at FMU? I can't get 91.1 on my radio.
-

Tech problems galore. Got it.
-
Martin, the FM signal for WFMU was switched with FM signal for this freeform San Fran station KFJC. SO what u were hearing on yr radio at 91.1 today was actually KFJC programming.
THEN if you went to WFMU.org the website was re-directed to KFJC.org's site! To listen to the stream u had to go to KFJC.org to hear WFMU's stream!!
This was NOT Tom's idea of a joke. The 2 stations WFMU and KFJC did this ALL day as a conceptual April Fool's joke.
ALso the DJ's on either station were asked NOT to mention over the air that the streams were switched.
-
man I must have missed something
when did Aprils Fools day become so big?
sheesh

Thank you, Jillian.
My mind is now at ease. For real.

I think the concept is neat and would work fine for djs spinning records, but one can certainly appreciate the challenges it poses for a call in radio show.
-
Meh. It would have been better if DJs could mention what was happening. Hearing calls from the Bay Area would have been cool, too.
Tom is a team player, though.

He's the captain, son! He's got a big "C" over his heart, like a purple-shirted GG Varitek.

I couldn't listen to the show live and am trying to find the archive of today's show. The one that's on the archive page obviously isn't what I want to hear. Couldn't find an archive on the KFJC website either.
Does anyone have a clue?
-
The fact that the legal station ID still had to be given sort of undermined the whole concept.
I knew going in that the KFJC stream wouldn't be able to hold up to the FOT onslaught.

Yeah, they're using ShoutCast. I used it to stream to maybe a dozen or so people that one time that the WFMU stream died. I checked a few times and there were over 200 listeners between the three streams.
I shall endeavor to never again use the word 'stream'.
-
I agree that the concept could be OK for Music shows.
But it was extremely NOT OK for Tom's show for numerous reasons:
His show is a call-in show and the 5-10minute delay the NY/NJ listeners had due to listening on KFJC's stream made it impossible to get conversation continuity between calls
AND it made it hard for Mike to screen calls.
As he was asked to NOT directly address the San Francisco listeners, he couldn't work with them either.
He actually had a really funny show written that he worked on for a fair amount of time for this April Fool's switch show if he would have been allowed to address the SF listeners and really get them going.
But if Tom directly addressed the SF listeners, he would have been seen as the one who spoiled the April Fool's joke...
and as Yesno pointed out, Tom's a team player.
Also there were technical problems as well because the DJs today did not broadcast from the regular studio they always use, but rather an alternate studio (u may have heard Tom refer to it as "The Submarine").
This alternate studio only has 2 phone-lines and ALSO has a DIFFERENT call-in number that FOTs are used to.
-
So is the Apple Jam disc of All Things Must Pass now officially the new Pangaea?
-
Too tired to listen last night so I missed all the fun (?). If the proper archive is never available, I guess it will serve me right for being such a shirker.
-
I feel ripped. I intentionally DIDN'T listen, so that I would have the Best Show to keep me awake throughout a late night drive to Nashville Friday.
Now I will die in a fiery car crash. Brian Turner and Ken Freedman will be notified. Soon my surviving family members will OWN WFMU.
-
RIP, Dave. Looking forward to the new, improved, non-April-Fooled WDFK!
-
I did listen but I missed part of the second JW call because I had to attend to my house's ailing sump pump. I figured I'd be able to hear it on the archive, but I guess not. Ugh. I knew there was a reason I hate April Fools Day.
-
Also--does anyone know why the blurb for today on the FMU webpage is "Tomorrow's "Monk" References Today!"? Did I miss something (besides most of last night's show, that is...)?
I see now...it's just a random, rotating message. Don't mean nuthin.
-
That was the worst conceptual joke in the history of the universe. I wish I could take back my pledge and give it directly to tom scharpling.
However, I laughed so hard that I cried when Sleepy Jeff called. I could totally relate.
-
This was just one in a long line of April Fools "jokes" that I never get. I guess I'm just not into pranks. I don't think they are funny. I think I'm still bitter about getting flour dumped on my head by a "friend" when I was 11 and his only defense was "April Fools!" All my subsequent experience of April Fools pranks have been a redux of that sort of humor, someone being an insensitive jerk and then telling me I should laugh because it brought everyone else some sort of pleasure.
-
Amusing as a concept but kinda sucky if you have a habit of relying on the archive to catch up with the show on Wednesdays. :-\
I hope someone ripped the stream of yesterday's show and it'll still be available as a podcast.
Mel?
-

i'm in the same boat as you. i always listen to the archive on wednesdays while i'm at work. today is ruined!...and it just started! waaaaaaaaaah :'(
candy from the current bin? ugh.
-
I was duped for about an hour, thinking that what I was hearing WAS the April Fool's day joke and eventually, Tom would come on. I guess I liked the KFJC show but was getting very annoyed the longer it went on. About 8:15 CST it kind of sunk in that I should check the KFJC site and then it all fell into place what I needed to do. I came in right at the end of the Jeep Cherokee call. I thought it was a pretty cool prank, too bad it didn't work that well for Tom's show.
-
And I totally thought the "ATTENTION" message at the top of the forum was a joke. Did it actually work?
-
Technical difficulties and all other factors considered, it ended up being a great show. Sleepy Jeff, calls from two people named Jeep, at least two calls ending fatally, a mayubernatorial entry, more drumming, Tom talking to someone from The Afterlife and trying to get better and more famous dead people to call in instead, the delay between things happening in studio and the reactions from Mike in another room, Tom covering "Beware of Darkness" live in studio and finally Tom, in a dark hour, turning to one of his enemies for help and the unexpected result.
Not to mention the big cliffhanger ending after Mike was asked to flip a mysterious switch on the wall. I dunno, I was definitely entertained.
-
i liked hearing james get james'd. tom blew up a bit sometime around the james'ing.
-
Not to mention the big cliffhanger ending after Mike was asked to flip a mysterious switch on the wall.
Yeah, I hope we get some resolution on this next week. I'm thinking the switch created a localized black hole that swallowed Mike whole.
-
I missed both JW calls, and most of what Wes talked about... I hope it's archive/podcasted.
And Wes, your list of highlights left out the part where I called David Schwimmer "workmanlike".
-
I've always been anti-April Fool's Day. Sure I like a good prank from time to time (I actually don't), but the day ends up being justification for the Mel Gibsons of the world to act like jerks. Is there anything worse than the smug satisfaction these once-a-year pranksters get when someone actually falls for some overcooked lie? It's the worst. Leave it to the professionals.
I'd be okay if the day was a celebration of comedy, but I've yet to experience an April 1st that wasn't a total gauntlet of lame. For every funny prank you have to suffer through a dozen awful ones. I just spend the day on edge, avoiding human contact while I wait for it to pass.
I don't see why Tom would feel obliged to keep the pretense going. Once it's past drive-time hours, the joke's already run its course. I'll give him this; when the man commits to a cause, he doesn't flake.
I do love the irony of the tables turning on James on the one day of year tailor made for his shenannigans.
-
Stealing my Best Show fix isn't a "prank", it's a crime. And lame. The fact that the archive is bunk is even worse, (I couldn't listen last night, i was at work). Hopefully the real show ends up as the podcast.
-
Between everyones individual delay on the chat and the lag on the show, it was pretty disorienting show. But that's what you get for not listening to the show as it's intended... sitting down, staring at the radio, with your head tilted forward (slightly).
-
As soon as they start broadcasting a signal to Knoxville, I will start listening "as intended".
REGIONIST!
-
I am also sad that the dumbest day of the year stole my favorite show on the radio. However, it would be kind of neat if the show wasn't podcast or archived but still recapped and then podcasted after the recap.

I always listen that way, but staring at the computer. And breathing through my mouth.
-
no matter what you listen to it on, it needs to be done all alone in your room, drinking a beer.
-
I had a pretty good April Fools day prank -- when my sister opened her door, a brick fell on her head.
-
i keep checking back here to see if someone uploaded a ripped stream. :(
-
so nobody heard my first call? aw man. was hoping to hear it again in the podcast too.
anyway, i had a good time talking to tom about the art musean and WIRE (the BAND not the TV SHOW).
-
oh, i just remembered... didn't somebody call in and say "calamari is a fruit"?
-
He's the captain, son! He's got a big "C" over his heart, like a purple-shirted GG Varitek.

i'm more of a fan of his brother Merle Varitek
-

that was a girl named dina, who asked if tom liked peaches.

jeez did your mom die in a car fire before she got around to teaching you patience?

It is taken for granted that FOT's breathe through their mouth.

april fools. but anyway, i already waited a week.

the archive is corrected now. ;D

thatsoundsstupid

That station switcheroo is like a bad 7 Second Delay episode that lasted 24 hours. Thusly, it probably contained 24 fatal flaws. I'm still not sure why Tom couldn't do a California-related show, as if him saying the name of the station he was broadcasting on didn't "ruin" the "joke" already(??). Also, woiuldn't the regular radio listener just be like "Oh shit, some other station took over my station, this sucks I'm turning it off" and then the internet listener (i.e. ME) just be like "Oh shit, this is some dumb prank now I gotta figure out how to listen to the radio station I actually WANT to hear and spend an extra two minutes finding a stream"? I would've liked to have heard the show Tom planned for this because it was probably awesome. There's a potential for funny in this prank, but the prank alone does not make me laugh.
-
the archive is corrected now. ;D
my day has been saved!!
-
The whole thing seemed to fly in the face of the WFMU ethos, which is about letting the DJs do their own programming the way they want. It could have been a great day if all of the individual shows could do their own unique April Fools gags. I was gearing up for Tom to open his show with Tom Waits, John Zorn, etc. Although the Oneida track did seem to make some sort of statement.
-
Dina reminded me a lot of Julie.
-
Dina reminded me a lot of Julie.
A few folks in the chat, myself included, made this same connection.
-
I loved the end of the show.
-
Me too. "Tell me somethin good... yeahhh... tell me that you like me, yeahhhh...." made my night.
But seriously, fuck whoever came up with this idea and forced the DJ's to go along with it with those stupid rules. This is FREEFORM RADIO, baby! Not someone's conceptual playground.
(I'm having a lot of problems seeing other people's creative concepts come to life these days, aren't I?)
-
While not the best of the Best, the Show made a decent diversion from resetting my toilet on the floor flange.
And I learned of a new online radio station to play.
-
so nobody heard my first call? aw man. was hoping to hear it again in the podcast too.
anyway, i had a good time talking to tom about the art musean and WIRE (the BAND not the TV SHOW).
I heard that! He didn't think your name was real.
-
Dina reminded me a lot of Julie.
Someone is copying me? That's horrifying!
-
(I'm having a lot of problems seeing other people's creative concepts come to life these days, aren't I?)
Didn't I see you at Barnes & Nobles, tearing up copies of ID and Wallpaper?
Fascist! Let the people CREATE!

WoW! So, KFJC 89.7 FM is what happen when we, the listeners don't support and pledge to WFMU!!!
I still think the joke would have been more funnier and more frightening if FMU had swapped with KCRW. I don't know what I hate that station so much, but I do. Everytime my coworker plays that goddamned "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on her computer, I become more and more motivated to give FMU more and more of my money.
-
What's the deal with names anyway? Is there is a list of proper names to be used on the show?
I worked with a Herbie in Cincy.

Ha. I had the same thought. People always talk up KCRW, but it's so bland. Any random college station plays more interesting music than them. (Let me praise Radio 1190 here in Colorado (radio1190.org). They're great. I'm not all negative.)
-
KCRW has its moments. I guess for some people that work with more liberal folk KCRW is 'work-safe' while FMU may not be. Where I work, 'work-safe' mean classic rock with 'Bob and Tom' in the morning or the big AM talk station (morning mucus radio with local conservative chatter plus a whole afternoon of Rush) (BARF SOUND).
I just listen to my 8 tracks.

That's work-safe where you work? Where do you work, the National Rifle Association? That sucks, I'm sorry for you. But on the other hand, where I work, no radio of any kind is safe for work. Isn't that equally oppressive?
Anyway, I'm surprised that FOTs were as hostile to the April Fool's prank (the signal swap) as this board suggests. Once I figured it out, it was fine with me. I was a little miffed for a few minutes, but it didn't throw my evening into disarray.
-
I'm curious--I didn't hear much of the show, and won't hear the archive until the weekend--did Tom talk about going to the Beatles Fest at all?
-
Considering how Tom is a self-described "professional", I was suprised that he spent the whole show moaning. Like he'd given up before it even started!
A professional gives his all for an audience of 5 or 500.
Of couse, that's why we listen in the first place though, right? To hear Tom complain?
-Ajax
-
Tom went to Beatle Fest? I went there thrice in high school. This may sound crazy, but I've done some things that aren't very cool in my lifetime --and enjoyed them!

He mentioned it here: http://www.scharplingandwurster.com/?p=107 I was looking forward to hearing about it. Future show, hopefully!
