Title: Chat bottleneck

The chat seemed unable to keep up with the 90 or so people that tried to join last night.  Even when I was banished to the lounge (in addition to about 30 other people!) words I would type would just never show up.  The whole thing crashed a few times.

What's the bottleneck?  Is it bandwidth, processor speed on the server?  Could we take up a collection to improve it?

Some things I was posting seemed like they took years to show up. Frustrating.

We're on a shared server, this is most likely why its so slow when it gets busy. Its really not worth the money to upgrade to private server just for the chat.
There's supposed to be some add on for the chat that speeds it up but I'll investigate further before I lay out any cash on it.
