Title: People with terrible books - Tom: Zero
Post by: Pete Velcro on April 10, 2008, 07:49:43 PM
Butch Patrick: One
Tom: Zero

From Wikipedia:

Butch Patrick...has completed his upcoming biography with his author Helen Darras. The book, published in early 2008, details Butch's first 25 years in Hollywood and is entitled "Eddie Munster AKA Butch Patrick."

That title really pops.

I think I heard Howard Stern talking about this.  He declined to write a forward so they just put in a transcription of some of what he said on the radio, without his knowledge.

I saw a "Method Man" graphic novel at this year's Comic Con, co-authored by Method Man.  It... didn't look good.

http://www.amazon.com/Method-Man/dp/0446699721

What if Tom wrote the story for a one-shot graphic novel (something that writes itself, like "A Newbridge Halloween To Remember") and has one of the FOTs illustrate it.  That'd get him on the board, right?

I thought the Wu-Tang Manual was a really cool format for a band book. A mixture of history, their personal beliefs, and annotated lyrics. A fun read.

I love the fact that the Butch Patrick memoir is about the first 25 years of his entertainment career. It suggests that there could be a sequel, and also I think I'd much rather read about his life during the past 25 years where he is a washed up child actor.

Quote
David Beckham is to launch a series of children's books with plots set in his football academies.

The stories, aimed at seven year olds, will be about what a group of young footballers get up to on the pitch and after training.

The books will also have tips, a pull-out tactics board and statistics on the game.

The first book in the series, which has not yet been given a title, is due to be released in June 2009 but publishers say the books will not be written by Beckham.

From Wikipedia:

Buffett has written 3 No. 1 best sellers. Tales from Margaritaville and Where Is Joe Merchant? both spent over seven months on the New York Times Best Seller fiction list. His book A Pirate Looks At Fifty went straight to No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller non-fiction list, making him one of seven authors in that list's history to have reached No. 1 on both the fiction and non-fiction lists. The other six authors who have accomplished this are Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, William Styron, Irving Wallace, Dr. Seuss and Mitch Albom.

Buffett also co-wrote two children's books, The Jolly Mon and Trouble Dolls, with his eldest daughter, Savannah Jane Buffett. The original hard cover release of the The Jolly Mon included a cassette tape recording of him and Savannah Jane reading the story accompanied by an original score written by Michael Utley.

Buffett's novel A Salty Piece of Land, was released on November 30, 2004, and the first edition of the book included a CD single of the song "A Salty Piece Of Land", which was recorded for License to Chill. The book was a New York Times best seller soon after its release.

Buffett's latest title, Swine Not?, was released May 13, 2008.

Buffett is currently writing a follow-up to his autobiography A Pirate Looks At Fifty, which he says may take up to ten years to write and complete.

One of the many things I do to make sure my next apartment isn't a refrigerator box over a subway grate is ghost writing. As a ghost writer, I'm actually responsible for 3 books -- two you've almost definitely never heard of, one you almost definitely have.

Having worked in publishing for over a decade, I can tell you that -- with rare exceptions -- getting published as a non-celebrity/non-parasite is a tiring, demoralizing experience. C'mon, does Tom really want to be classed with Tila Tequila?

Twitter Wit: Brilliance in 140 Characters or Less (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061897272/thedayhascome-20)

Quote
Product Description

Sometimes, what happens on Twitter shouldn't stay on Twitter.

Twitter Wit is the first ever compilation of Twitter aphorisms and witticisms, celebrating a medium that has enabled millions of users to broadcast their lives and quips within Twitter's 140-character limit, thus reinventing wordplay in the tradition of Dorothy Parker and Oscar Wilde. This collection includes hundreds of the most memorable and hilarious tweets to date, demonstrating that inside every moment is a joke waiting to be written.

Everybody's twittering—from millions of regular folks to world-famous celebrities and writers like Ashton Kutcher, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Sarah Silverman, Penn Jillette, Neil Gaiman, Paula Poundstone, Susan Orlean, Russell Brand, Margaret Cho, Stephen Fry, Rainn Wilson, and Diablo Cody—they're all here, and all of them sharp as stilettos.

Then again, I suppose Tom could be in it.

Well, that's the thing ... this is not exactly a stable time in this or any other business. I'd hate to hook my wagon to one author, despite the fact that the guy shows no signs of stopping.

His whole thing is "I have so many ideas that I have to have co-authors, because I literally don't have enough time on the planet to make books out of all of them".

He's also far from the only guy to do that. Nearly every big "franchise" author farms out most of the actual writing.

Speaking of books, Dan Brown's new brick drops next week in the US. The release of the Swedish edition of the book is a mere week later - the Swedish publishers don't wanna risk people picking up the English version. However, due to insanity, the American publishers refuse to hand over the manuscript to the Swedes until it goes on sale in the US, which gives the Swedes about one week to translate and print the book. Rather than backing off from such an impossible proposition and wait a couple more weeks, the Swedish publishers have decided to chop the book up and give six translators one part each (of about 100 pages), and one week to translate it. Then copy + paste = done.

The potentially schizoid translation might the only reason to read this book.

Just read today that this book might feature clones of Jesus.  There's a part of me that really wants to read it.

I'll read it with disgust/pleasure round Christmas, when my dad inevitably gets a copy. Jesus clones deserve an afternoon.

Also for those of us who have to travel a lot, you can play a little game with yourself where you try and guess what percentage of the people on your plane are reading a Dan Brown book. The backlist counts. Once, at the height of the Da Vinci Code frenzy, no lie - 25%.

This crazy Swedish translation process would make a better movie than any of Dan Brown's book. I think Ron Howard should direct it -- it would be a nice book end to Apollo 13 -- and I think Omar should have a cameo as a scrivener.

It's not really a problem when you don't actually write any of them.

He's the Keith Haring of tossed off thrillers?

The cast of Jersey Shore was visiting Mets spring training camp today, for some reason. That filled me with a terrifying vision of one of those shaved apes sucker punching Johan Santana.

Looks like it's an autobiographical novel about the alienation of being a rock star.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Wentz):
Quote
Writing
Wentz has written a book entitled The Boy With the Thorn In His Side, a story based on nightmares he had as a child. The title is a reference to a track on The Smiths' album The Queen Is Dead. Wentz explained that writing books serves as another mode of self-expression other than songwriting: "My inspiration and my ideas don't begin and end at the beginning and the ending of a song. It is too limiting." It was reported that he was to publish another book entitled "Rainy Day Kids". Years went by without any word on the book's progress and Wentz even expressed on his Twitter account that he didn't think it would ever come to fruition. However in February 2012, he posted a photo on his personal blog of what appears to be a rough draft of the book's manuscript, explaining that he is currently in the process of editing Rainy Day Kids and that it will be 40-50 pages longer than he originally expected. On December 13, 2012, Wentz revealed the cover for the book, now titled "Gray", on his personal blog. The cover states that he co-wrote the book with MTV News writer and former FNMTV co-host James Montgomery. Wentz went on to announce that the book was available for pre-order and would be released on February 26, 2013.

In June 2009, it was announced Wentz was working on a five-issue comic book mini-series called Fall Out Toy Works, to be published by Image Comics. The idea was conceived by Wentz and designer Darren Romanelli. The plot is loosely based on the Fall Out Boy song "Tiffany Blews" and focuses on "a mysterious toymaker, a cyborg gal named Tiffany and a kid in a bear suit that looks lifted from the cover of Fall Out Boy's Folie á Deux". With writing by Brett Lewis, and art by Sam Basri, the first issue was released on September 2, 2009.
