Friends of Tom,
I’ve put together a new Scharpling & Wurster compendium over at http://buffcoat.blogspot.com. It’s basically a listing of every time Jon has called the show, put together as I worked my way through the archives.
I already have a bunch of changes to make from Omar and Jouster (thanks, guys!) And Omar is working on linking his capsule write-ups to the listings. Thanks to Omar and Jason for letting me help out with ideas on how to link some of the Best of the Best Show stuff together.
I would welcome PMs of any changes or corrections I need to make. I think I got the vast majority of the calls, but I may well have missed a few short ones or gotten the times wrong on some.
Now, when you need to find that one call from 2004, when Hot Rockin’ Ronny wanted Tom to play all of ELP, you’ll have a place to go.

A-Mazing
-
We are a crazy bunch, aren't we. No wonder Tom's afraid.
-
This is awesome.
-
This is great, very well done.
-
This is AWESOME!
You're a stud, Buffcoat. Thank you.
-
Not just a stud: soon a space champion.
-
This'll be very useful. Thanks!
-
Excellent work!
-
Impressive, most impressive.
-
Wonderful
-
A valuable resource for the obsessive, good stuff Buffcoat.
-
Fantastic, Buffcoat! I've actually been doing the same thing on my own for a while</OCD>, so I might have some input.
-
oh my lord!
thank you so so much!
as a somewhat new listener, i've been going through the archives vigorously for the past few months. it's kind of overwhelming what with how long the show's been on, and this will be incredibly helpful. i feel like i should pay you or something.
FANTASTIC.
-
SO GOOD! Thank you.
-
Holy moley. Nice work.
-
There's good ... Then there's Buffcoat Good.
-
Hello, all.
Thanks for your kind words and feedback.
I'm updating the site once a week and still working through the notes from Jouster and Omar. I won't bump this thread once a week or anything, but just so's you know.
http://buffcoat.blogspot.com
-
I just noticed that the link to the archives doesn't work, it goes wmfu.org which doesn't exist.
Great site, keep up the good work.

Fixed. Thanks a lot for the tip.
There should be a "W-MF-U," though.
-
Yeah really great! Many, many thanks. This makes it easy for me to navigate the archives.
-
Now that is just really something wonderful, Buffcoat.
Now, whenever I/We want to reference or find out more on a certain appearance or character...
Squible-dee-doo!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Jouster just alerted me to two more "hidden" Newbridge-related calls:
April 15, 2003: Roger [Wants Tom Off The Air] (3:10) - This one is actually after the archive cuts off, but if you access Bryce's archive you can hear it
January 6, 2004 (Show 1): Kimmy McCook [Angry Record Promo Guy] (Time unknown).
I believe both these calls are available in the various mp3 postings going around. Happy listening.
And thanks again to Jouster!
-
Jouster pointed out that the Gargoyla call available on MP3 wasn't listed in the Newbridgctionary. So I did a ridiculous amount of digging and found that Gargoyla's "last post" on the old, old board indicates that this call was from:
March 18, 2003: Gargoyla Gets Banned (), The Chippert Report () – No Archive
Oh, the wonders of completism. Jouster also let me know the actual dates of Rock, Rot and Rule and Conventions, Inc., which are now updated on the webpage.
If anybody has a complete recording of Conventions, Inc. (without the interruption from the time it was rebroadcast), that would be a cool thing to have.
buffcoat!
-
Fantastic.
Superhelpful.
-
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought this angry George Carlin fan (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=27696&archive=43635&starttime=00:50:28) from last week's show was also from the Newbridgiverse.
-
I thought that was Petey.
-
Well done! Seriously comprehensive list.
-
I thought that was Petey.
Agreed. Wurster usually brings a little more, ah, subtlety to even his very short calls - see the "Broger"/"do you want to watch me get off" call from April 15, 2003.
-
We are a crazy bunch, aren't we. No wonder Tom's afraid.
Crazy, even terrifying.
-
I thought that was Petey.
Agreed. Wurster usually brings a little more, ah, subtlety to even his very short calls - see the "Broger"/"do you want to watch me get off" call from April 15, 2003.
You guys are probably right. Tom's reaction just reminded me of the first Zeph call and the fact that the caller hung up first made me think it was Wurster.
-
Weirdly, a friend of mine also thought that was JW. I'm with buffcoat, though - a little too loud, a little too dumb.
-
I think there's no doubt it wasn't Wurster. I'm just not absolutely certain it was Petey. Almost though.
-
I love that BRoger call though. Classic.
-
That possibly-Petey Carlin call was definitely a Tom Laffs moment.
-
i always get mistaked for hoopleheads. =[
-
But it was funny, Petey! If you'd made the call, you'd have a right to be proud.
-
not sure if this was mentioned, but on the June 28th 2005 best Show, there was a call from Jon Wurster not mentioned on the Newbridgctionary where he was giving his Caddyshack movie quote. it was an unnamed caller.
sorry i dont have the time it came on, but it was just over a minute long
-
Yeah, I have that marked as well: June 28, 2005: Drug Dealer (0:26), Baul in Newbridge (0:47), Death Wish Quote (1:00), Vacation Quote (1:08), PBR 26 (1:22)
-
There has been a mention of "hidden" calls/arhcives. Where are these found?
-
Updated, gentlemen! Thanks, and let me know of any others. The ones where JW calls in a bunch of times are the hardest to find all of them.
-
Bump, in honor of this work's mention on the Show proper.
http://buffcoat.blogspot.com
Hey, new people, Get Ready to Meet my Little Friend. The Newbridgctionary lists all calls regarding Newbridge.
-
I was upset that Buffcoat didn't get a nomination for Best Scrivener, but the Newbridgctionary is really more of a reference work that needs its own category.
Omar is Boswell to Tom's Samuel Johnson, but Buffcoat is Samuel Johnson to the S&W English language. Right?
-
I am slowly but surely updating the Newbridgctionary with the shows from the latter half of 2010 and will eventually catch up with 2011. Hoo... ray.

Now updated through the first show of April.
-
Is there a place somewhere that lists all the towns near Newbridge? I like using those names when playing SimCity games, and I don't remember nearly enough names.

One shortcut is to add a word to -bridge. Ha, ha. You can probably find a few by searching on the page for "bridge," though.
Upper Old East Westbridge is one of my favorites. Mellow Grove.
-

I'm just guessing there's a North Southbridge and a South Northbridge along with a West Eastbridge and an East Westbridge.
Unrelated and I don't know if it's come up more than once, but I like that the high school is called Newbridge High High School.
-
I know there's a Redbridge and Old Redbridge.
In the Drunk Driver call, Phil Monroe's son rattles off a ton when he explains the itinerary for the Monroe Family Roadshow.
Also, in the Dom Scharpling call we learn that there's Nobridge, which used to have a bridge, until it was destroyed and the river filled in with colored marbles and paved over (a common Newbridgverse construction technique).
-
Newbridgctionary now updated through the June 28 show.
I'm almost caught up to the live show! I'll have to start listening to the archives as I walk around.
-
Ha ha! Newbridgctionary now completed update with all Newbridge calls ever made.
Time to get 18 months behind again!

During his Labor Day message, Obama should have singled you out for all your hard work.

Well, in his defense, he's been busy with that band of his. And nem death panels.
-
Newbridgctionary now up to date through the 10/4 show, including the long-awaited title for 2011's entries.
Looking at it made me go back and listen to the 2010 call about "We Gotta Stop the Mosque at Ground Zero." Laughs ensued.
-
Awesome.
It's been a very strong, prolific year for S&W. Good mix of familiar characters and great one-offs (Myron Felkerton, Ron Furst). I'm kinda of getting in the mood for another fully fleshed-out D-Plopp call, though. But then, I'm heavily biased toward the Plop-Tron.
Oh, last week's Trip Whiting call was a sprawling masterpiece.
-
It's good that Darren has evolved to replace Bryce as the second go-to character after Philly Boy Roy. I always hold out hope that Hot Rockin' Ronny will make a comeback. Perhaps during the last Best Show ever on the show's 100th anniversary. Come on, medical science!
-
I've droned on about this before, but what makes Darren so special is that he's Newbridge Tom's best friend. Well, other than Dom, I guess. Speaking of...it does seem like it's almost time for another call from Tom's family. I think the last one was Ron's amazing call last X-Mas. It'd be great to hear from Jon, Sean, or Lon.

My favorite is Tunnelbridge

1/07/03 The Petey Birthday party episode has a Wurster call only 1:30 in length, where he calls in saying he is petey and that he and his dad are in jail.
Also a call about 1;24 in where he plays barry Smith Robley an agent who wants to rep Petey.
-
Thanks, econoodle!
-
your welcome.
the fake petey call comes in at i believe, 9 minutes in, or close to it.
and the other, 1:24 into it.
-
The 'brigdctionary is so updated.
The early ones I mostly didn't listen to all the way, I just listened to a few seconds every couple of minutes, so there may be other short calls in there somewhere.
-
Cool, thanks for updating.
Do you guess on the spelling of some of the last names, or do you have a direct line to the Powers?
-
No direct line, alas - I guess and use my research skillz when I can.
-
The Newbridgctionary is now up to date through last week's show (4/3/12).
2012's summary title is "A Fudge-Covered Mixing Board."
-
I'm not sure if this is the proper thread, but I'm looking for a specific Wurster call and I can't remember the date or the context, but he tells a story involving doing coke with Eric
Claptons gardener and getting a case of the
coke pukes. Anyone recall the episode? It's bugging the hell out of me!
-
bump
-
The Newbridgctionary is now updated through last night's show (11/20/12). I laughed out loud typing "[Van Morrison/John Cougar Mellencamp Cruise]".
Now I can enjoy my Thanksgiving holiday in peace rather than shame.
-
The Newbridgctionary is now updated through last night's show (3/26/13). The title for the year's entries is "Like a Morning Zoo Dude Having a Nervous Breakdown."
-
The Newbrigctionary is now updated through September 24, 2013. "Sorry for the delay."
-
Updated through October 1, 2013: Threat [I Dropped My Fudge Popsicle All Over My Short Khaki Pants]
-
Updated all the way through to the penultimate episode, and poised to finish the project.
-
Updated all the way through to the penultimate episode, and poised to finish the project.
Forgot to mention that I finished this last night.
Final entry:
December 17, 2013: Officer Harrups [Flagrant 2132 on the Streets of Newbridge], Philly Boy Roy [In Studio], Jon Wurster [In Studio]
A nice way to go out for this incarnation of Newbridge.
As for the Newbridgctionary, I got to invent a word, and I got to turn my slapdash personal listing of all the JW calls (I listened to just the Tom and Jon calls for years before I got into listening to whole Best Shows) into an as-permanent-as-the-Internet-will-let-it-be cataloging of the greatness of Best Show-era Newbridge. My work (t)here is done.
-
Your work is immensely appreciated, buff.
-
It's been a big help for me, who got into the show the same way over the last year and a half. Thanks so much.
-
Thanks, guys. By the way, I looked back over the calls from the 2013 shows, and by far my favorite of them all was Count Rockula. Nobody was hugely into that at the time, but for JW to keep that voice up for 5 minutes, only to drop it in such utter defeat, was one of the greats.

We are on the same page yet again. One of the best one-off characters ever imo.
- Saying "bastard" and "diddling my wife" in the Count Rockula voice
- Believing Tom Cruise sucks the blood out of Craig T. Nelson's neck in All the Right Moves
- A son named Mellor Eno who goes to Newbridge Vampire Day School
- "I asked her if daddy was still in the picture." "And I was also touching Dr. Winkle when I said it."
- Pod Locker, a Foot Locker for podcasters
- A 50-song concept album about saving the environment, featuring members of the Gas Station Dogs, that literally had every style of music in every song. It was so poorly received that 50,000 unsold records were dumped into a landfill, killing 245 baby raccoons
- Tom, Jon, and Jon Daly losing it over the effects of receiving a lifetime supply of Wacky Packages
- THAT SONG (http://friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,3693.msg201489.html#msg201489), which pops into my head at least once a week
- "Pubic domain . . . it means nobody owns it . . . like 'Campdown Razors'"
- The box set
- "Ew, why did you fling that at me?" <click>
-
Thanks for all your hard work. Amazing resource, especially for my own silly little obsession of figuring out all the family trees.
-
Josh - I had forgotten how good that song was. Such poetry.
Also: "my vife" and "pubic domain."
-
Thanks to Scratchbomb's Best Show logs from 2001 (http://scratchbomb.com/best_show_logs/best_show_logs_2001/ (http://scratchbomb.com/best_show_logs/best_show_logs_2001/)), I found a 10-second Hot Rockin' Ronny call from 2001 that I had missed!
December 11, 2001: Ronny's Comin' Back (1:59)
It's possible that there are a few more of these in the early days of the show. The way I found the calls is to go through and listen to a couple of seconds of every minute of the shows. As I work my way back through the archives over the next, uh, couple of years, I may find some I missed. Still, I had found 35 of his 36 appearances of any type in 2001, and this one was less than 10-seconds long in a show he did not appear in otherwise, so I'm pretty sure it's almost complete.

Also love that call. And if I recall correctly, it turns out that he has been in a headlock for the duration of the call.
-
Was listening to the episode from February 5, 2013 and it's listed as "No appearance" on the site, however there is a call to prankster Brad Pembroke that should be included. Tom gives the backstory starting at 1:08:13 (time according to official WFMU archive, not the podcast) but the call begins at 1:16:45 and lasts until 1:37:41.

You are right! I listened to those shows while walking around - I forgot to note that one. It's updated now.
Thanks, andrewryanfetter!

Now updated with for the New Era of the Best Show!

Now updated with for the New Era of the Best Show!
You've put in Philly Boy Roy instead of Chad the prolific session drummer for the 20th.
-
Thanks - PBR was my placeholder and I forgot to change it for that one.

Can anyone confirm Chad's last name?
-
Can anyone confirm Chad's last name?
Chad Gupton from Pepperbridge.
Yep, I'm listening to it again. Don't judge.
-
Can anyone confirm Chad's last name?
iTunes info for the show says Gufton.
-
Special thanks to agent_jimmy who passed along many, many time notes for PBR calls from 2006-2013!

one of my all-time favorites!!

Alas, I stopped doing this shortly into the run of the new show. If anybody tracks Wurster calls in this era and wants to send them to me, I'd be happy to add them.
-
I have updated the Newbridgctionary to include the Jay & Paul in the studio and NY vs. CHI pre-Best Show calls from the box set.
