"First album you ever bought/got as a gift" doesn't work as a topic, because for me it would be some Chipmunks or Popeye tape I listened to when I was 5. I do have specific memories of listening to Popeye radio drama. And then I collected tapes throughout middle school. I think I was into the Fat Boys and G'N'R Lies before I started to imitate cool high school kids by being into/pretending to like Front 242, Jane's Addiction, Pop Will Eat Itself, and Concrete Blonde. I actually did like all those bands, but I think I brainwashed myself into liking any old band that seemed "cool." But I don't remember, for example, what the first tape I ever bought was. I do remember a treasured mix tape I made that I recorded off of 106.3 in Jersey when it was actually kind of good that had such songs as "Ship of Fools" by World Party and the Butthole Surfer's version of "Hurdy Gurdy Man." Anyway.
But I do remember the first CD I ever got. And it was God Fodder by Ned's Atomic Dustbin, and it came with a t-shirt which was way too big but which I wore all the time.

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People. Was a tape fiend before that.
THATS WHEN THINGS MADE SENCE 2 ME.

I bought the Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique almost a year before I had a cd player.

The first cd I bought after I got a cd player was Julee Cruise's Floating Into The Night.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, What Hits?!. I was 14 or 15. I didn't know any better. Please forgive me.

Yeah I was 11 when I bought my first one. It was 1990 and I liked to wear purple jeans.

I have that one on vinyl, Omar. Haha!
Like Chris L, I was a huge tape fiend before CDs. I think my first CD was either Sweet Oblivion by the Screaming Trees or Exile on Main Street. I bought them both around the same time.

I know for sure it was one of the following:
Blink-182, Enema of the State
Eminem, The Slim Shady LP
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Californication
Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Questionable purchases? Sure. Still, "Doo Wop (That Thing)" = one of the best songs of the nineties. Prove me wrong!

That title track makes me MELT. They came here recently and I couldn't make it. Emma, why are you so cool?
-
Oh Samir. It is YOU who are the cool one!
That album sparked my very real love affair with the Weakerthans, and my very imaginary (but no less valid) love affair with John K. Samson (who I have met, mostly by accident, enough times that he recognizes me at shows now! Which kind of freaks me out and makes my life better simultaneously).
-
You crazy emo kids. Get a room.
-
You mean you're not interested in what bands I'm a rabid fan of??
I don't get it.
-
I'm just joking around. I had a roommate who was a huge Weakerthans fan in college.

I was in my thirties before I bought my first CD. I think it was Madness, The Peel Sessions, though I'm not sure. But I remember my first record: for my thirteenth birthday, my sister bought me this:

I was really confused about why the included poster was printed on thin rice paper as well as the content. "Mom, what's psilocybin?"
"Mom, what's Lebanese blond hash?", Etc. In my defense, I was only seven years old.

"Mom, what's Lebanese blond hash?"
My favorite, a mere year after receiving my first record. To my sorrow, I came no longer to enjoy it or its ilk a mere two years later.

Just a little Off topic, but I think I got my first CD deck in 1994 (at age 35!)--a used one from a friend that only opened when you hit it just right, ala Funzie.
I had already owned a CD for a few years, though--a nice CD of Bach keyboard concerti that had come with a club membership. Was all LP and tape up until then.
First CD I actually bought was this, followed by Kojak Variety:

I remember that I used to have a kid's record player. My only 45? Phil Collins' "Two Hearts".
-
My first album was "Free To Be, You and Me"
I still have it. I also have the MP3s, just so I can rejoice in a little "William Wants A Doll" every now and then when I'm in my car.
My first tape was "Flood" by They Might Be Giants. Still one of my favorites.
-
My first tape was "Flood" by They Might Be Giants. Still one of my favorites.
Flood was the third cd I bought. I have no clue what my first cassette was but Quiet Riot's Mental Health is a contender. My first 45 was Juice Newton's Queen Of Hearts when I was really young and the first album I remember buying was Def Leppard's Pyromania.

That was my first CD. I got it on my birthday but I didn't have time to listen to it because I had to get to school. Later that day I was hit in the knee with an aluminum bat (someone's grip slipped in softball) and I got to go home early. I was pscyhed because I got to listen to my new CD and I hated softball anyway.

You must be close to the same age as my kid sister. That was her first album which she played it endlessly on family car trips. This thing gives me horrible flashbacks of being driven aimlessly around Pennsylvania and New York State, bored out of my mind with my head jammed into a pillow.

I can't remember which one came first, but the first and only three CDs I owned for a long time were Dookie by Green Day, Mellow Gold by Beck, and Transmissions from the Sattelite Heart by Flaming Lips. Two of those three discs still occassionally get dusted off. I'll leave it up to everyone's imagination which two.

First vinyl as a gift was Best of E.L.O. The first record I convinced my Dad to buy me was "Let It Whip" by Dazz Band. I don't recall the first cassette.

Oh hell, I screwed up. Cosmo's Factory was, of course, my first record ($3.99 at the record store that Pops Taylor ran out of the basement of Chester's department store.)
My first CDs were gifts that came with the first CD player my wife bought for me. They were Dylan's Knocked Out Loaded and Yes's 90215.

Yeah, those are great. I just wish he'd pruned it a bit; even Thriller would have overstayed its welcome at 77 minutes.
I don't think it exists, but I once had a Michael Jackson cover of "Army of Me" stuck in my head for days.

When I got my first CD player for Christmas. I almost opened my sister's present first...PiL's '9' on CD, but was stopped in the nick of time. "A CD? Thanks, sis...I gues--OHHHHH..."
I got "Echo & the Bunnymen" too, but PiL was opened first.

I remember thinking then that the honeymoon was over with Adrenalize. They kinda just started sounding like Shania Twain. Or maybe she sounds like Def Leppard, for whatever reason. (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003804263) But it's nice to be able to put on Hysteria if I ever want to feel 14 again.
