Title: First Concert (don't judge)
Post by: erika on April 21, 2008, 12:29:29 PM
I was 14 and my friend's parents took us to go see Meat Loaf.

I didn't know much about him at the time, and afterwards didn't feel like I ever needed to hear his music again. It was scary bad. But it was my first concert nontheless...

The first concert I chose to go to was PJ Harvey, Elastica and Live at Merriweather Post Pavillion.

Couldn't remember which was first, Les Claypool's first side project or the Tibetan Freedom Concert with Tribe Called Quest, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Biz Markie, Cibo Matto and the Beastie Boys.

When I was in grade seven, I paid $50 to see Blink-182 play the Molson Amphitheatre.

Now that you all know this, I can never look any of you in the eye!

Queensryche  - they opened with the big hits off of Empire and then did all of Operation Mindcrime
It was pretty awesome, or at least was when I was 14.

My first concert was Joan Jett, Loverboy and Quiet Riot at the fairgrounds when I was in grade school, with my dad.  I don't remember much about it other than I left hating Loverboy and bought what I think was my first cassette (Quiet Riot's Mental Health) the next day.  Joan Jett apparently had no effect on me.

Wait, that's totally not true.  I saw some crappy industrial band at the Limelight when I was 16.  I went to go see Aphex Twin but the lamewads that I went with wanted to leave before he came on.  I think he ended up DJing sandpaper or something.

My first concert was probably Christian recording artist Carmen when I was a small kid.  I also remember my mom taking our family to see Billy Ray Cyrus for free on the Fourth of July.

My first concert I chose to go to, besides small punk shows, was probably Lollapalooza 1996.  The Ramones played that year.

When I was little, my parents took my brother and I along with them to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Unfortunately, like August at Yo La Tengo, we both fell asleep.

The first concert I went to on my own was Built To Spill.

My first concert was also Pulp!  June 1998 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, with Bran Van 3000 opening.  I was fourteen.  My eighteen-year-old brother took me and bought me a pint at a bar called the Blarney Stone before the show.  I still can't believe they served us.

First concert ever (age eight):  either Phil Ochs or the New Lost City Ramblers.

It's funny, there are about 20 separately owned Blarney Stones in Manhattan and all of them will serve anyone.   I think every concertgoing New Jersey kid finds this out eventually.

My first: Gang Green and Slap Shot, City Gardens, fall 1986.

i went to a lot of local shows in junior/high school, but my first trek to national acts was (gulp) THIRD EYE BLIND (Blue album tour) at Austin Music Hall.  Tonic opened for them- blegh!!

i enjoyed myself, but had more fun roaming the streets and getting drunk with trannies.  also the first time i had a mixed liquor/soda (disguised in a taco cabana cup).

I went to a lot of shows with my church youth group so I don't even remember. My first non church related show or kids event was probably Third Eye Blind too but on their first tour. I still consider their self-titled a guilty pleasure. But, the show wasn't very good since it was at the State Fair.

One of these years, I am going to spend the money and go see somebody play at the Xcel Energy Center. I haven't ever seen a mainstream act in an arena because all the shows I want to see are usually at First. Ave or the Entry and I can't justify paying 50-60 dollars extra to see a band I really don't care that much about just to experience a concert there. But, I've heard it's a great place to see a show so hopefully somebody plays there that I'd want to see.

Kriss Kross: I think I was 8? I don't know.

Lollapalooza: I was 11. I went with my brother and my mom. I got a contact high for the first but not the last time. Billy Joe of Green Day came out and whined about how whatshisface got hurt at Woodstock '94 or some shit. They did not play a song. My brother was sad. I wanted to stay for the Smashing Pumpkins because I had an embarrassing crush on Billy Corgan. It was not to be.  :'(

Soundgarden: Same year as Lollapalooza, I think. I went with my brother and his friend Luis.

The Cramps: Big Beat from Badsville tour at the Cameo. I was 13, I think. I usually lie and say this was my first concert.

Besides local legends NIL8, my first big show was at the state fairgrounds on a dirt ring mostly reserved for horse shows.  It was The Offspring with The Vandals and Lunachicks. I usually omit the Offspring when talking about it.

Wait, does "Weird" Al count? I think I saw him when I was very young. I also might have seen the Beach Boys on the Kokomo tour (at the aforementioned fairgrounds), but obviously that was not so memorable.

T.S.O.L. at the Living Room in Providence, RI - Summer '87. This was on the tour for Hit & Run, when they went all G'n'R hard rock, but they still played some stuff off of Change Today? & Revenge, which me and my pals were obsessed with after hearing their tunes in a skate video. The March and Holy Cow opened.  I bought one of the tour t-shirts, but gave it to Rachel Barnicoat (that girl could really rock the tretorns), who I had been deeply in love with (unbeknownst to her) since we took 7th grade Social Studies together with Mr. Bernardo (he looked like Quaddafi) two years previous. I wanted to impress her with how "rock" I was for having gone to see a real band at a real club. Alas, she went out with Brian Haines instead (baseball team, bmoc-type). Oh well.

I was also in love with a Tretorn-rocking girl named Lynne something, and I also wished that she was impressed that I went to hardcore shows, and I'm sure she didn't care.  That's about all I can remember.  I wish it was because I've moved on, but I'm probably just burnt.

My first concert was Nirvana in Syracuse. There were so many collage goons there that Nirvana stopped playing and walked off the stage. Kurt Cobain shouted something like "You guys are assholes! We got your fucking money! You can leave whenever you want!" They coaxed him back onstage, he played lithium and the lights came on. The whole thing probably took 30 minutes.

She shouldn't be because I distinctly remember feeling that sense of despair a young girl feels when she's in love with 3 pinpoints of light, also known as Joey, Jordan, and Johnnie.
Also, that sense of guilt for my poor  father who didn't have a ticket and had to wait in the parents' section.  He said he didn't mind, but I still felt bad.

Fugazi, at Bogart's in 1991 or 1992. It was also the first time:

They were brawling. I think this was around In Utero, so they were as big as they were going to get. The place was like a saloon you see in the westerns, where everyone is throwing each other over tables and through windows. It was such a slugfest. I was seriously worried I was going to have an arm broken since I wasn't a big kid by any means. Afterwards, I thought every show would involve survival instincts.

1st gig accompanied by a parent: tony bennett with my dad at the academy of music in phila around age 15.

1st gig unchaperoned: dookie-era green day at the old philadelphia civic center when i was 15.

followed by megadeth at the same venue months later.

concluding with mike watt at a smaller rock club venue in chinatown shortly after that. that was pretty much the end of the line for me. once i saw heroes like watt and pat smear driving their own vehicles to the gigs and loading their own gear - my entire thought process of what rock n' roll was all about was blown to smithereens. up to that point, i just assumed that bands flew 1st class from town to town on the record label's dime and stayed in the finest of hotels. actually seeing that that way wasn't necessarily written in stone was pretty heavy on me. also, getting to see bands i loved up close in tiny rooms pretty much ended any desire i had to see/hear them from row 90 in some arena.

My first chaperoned concert was Sharon, Lois, and Bram. My first unparented concert was the 1997 HORDE Festival in Saratoga Springs. My friend's stepdad took me and another friend. He really wanted to see Primus. We really wanted to see Kula Shaker. Don't judge. Beck wore a sailor hat. Mike Doughty ranted about rope. We left during Neil Young. It's been uphill from there.

My first show was Billy Idol in 1986 at the Norfolk Scope. My mom took me and I wore parachute pants.

The opening bill was a blur, but someone later told me it was the Blake Babies (Juliana Hatfield). Would that even be possible? All I remember is that the Harley Davidson dudes in attendance pretty much booed them off the stage, and before they exited, they tossed playing cards into the audience with little messages printed on them.

David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails at the Camden Waterfront in 1995. I was 15 years old. I was staying with my best friend for the weekend, and he had tickets, so I went. I wasn't really into David Bowie or Nine Inch Nails at the time. In fact, the kids who were into NIN scared the crap out of me. A lot of the same kids were into Marilyn Manson.

One memorable moment was when Bowie played The Man Who Sold the World, and this girl turned around and asked us, "Isn't this a Nirvana song?"

I saw Weezer in '01 knowing they weren't that good anymore at age 21. Cold was the opener and it was at Roy Wilkins Auditorium- a terrible place to see a concert.

7-23-1983 / Chicago, IL / Comiskey Park
The Police headlined an all day concert with supporting acts:  A Flock Of Seagulls, The Fixx, Ministry (new wave era), Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
That was the Synchronicity tour.

After an entire day of music, my dad made my brother and me leave during the first Police tune Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.  He wanted to make sure that we would leave the parking lot quickly.  My brother and I have never forgiven him for this.

But the entire day was great actually.  I walked up to the stage and Michael from A Flock of Seagulls waved at me.  My Dad snapped the photo and I'm so happy to still have it.

First concert: Midnight Oil at the Bronco Bowl, Dallas 1990.  Pretty Good

Second concert: An Evening with Phil Collins, Starplex Amphitheater, Dallas 1990. Yeah!

Third concert: The Pixies, Fox Theater, Portland 1991.  Pere Ubu opened.

Oh, and the first concert I saw as a wee one with parents was Chuck "Feels So Good" Mangione!

The first concert i remember going to was Pat Benatar.  But it was really my dad going, and taking me, my sister, and my mom with him.  Rhythm Corps opened.  But it was cool and all.  I also remember being taken to see the Bee Gees.  I was never "hit" by my father, other than a few spankings as a small child.  but one day, when i was 14 or so, he told me that we were going to see the Bee Gees.  this was around 1988 or so.  I liked some Bee Gees stuff, and figured it would be fun.
Later on that night, i got in an argument with my dad about something, and he whipped out the Bee Gee's concert as leverage!  Like, "Hey, if you don't blah blah blah, then you aren't coming to the Bee Gees concert!"
I was blown away at the fact that he'd use the Bee Gees show as a THREAT.  I mean, I figured it would be fun and all, but REALLY didn't give a  shit about it.  So I say to him  "Who cares about going to see a bunch of has-beens?" and he went off on me and raised his fist like he was going to punch me in the face.  He was mad as hell.
I guess he was just in a fucked up mood, maybe some shit was going on back then that had him on edge.  I talked to him about it much later and it had NOTHING to do with the Bee Gees.  It had to do with me coming off snotty and unappreciative.  It's the only time he EVER came close to hitting me.  He's an amazing father.  But I just think that's a funny story.  Almost getting punched in the face after insulting the Bee Gees.

anyway.   What I consider my REAL first concert (the first concert that I went to, because i wanted to.  it also happened to be the first one i went to without my parents)  was The Ramones.

I'm really proud to be able to say that my first concert was The Ramones.
I was 14 or so and this was a year or so after Brain Drain.  I was right up against the stage the whole concert.  Bought a t-shirt with a pinhead skull on it.  Great memory.

I am pretty sure that the first concert that I saw was the Box.

I don't know if they are known outside of Canada, they were a Quebecois band.  They had this big anti cold war hit called "Ordinary People" that I loved.  They played at the fair so I went.  I was in grade seven, I think I left after I heard the song that I liked.

The first concert I saw was the inaugural installment of this town's now annual "having a really old kind of washed up band play" series. It was the weird reunited version of the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was not the one original member involved. I told my parents I didn't want to come, but apparently I ended up there anyway.

Wow, I never knew what syphilis sounded like until now.

you gotta admit Dave, what really rounded out this whole experience for you was not the blaring solos or that blanket of funny-smelling smoke that lay over the crowd's head: it was the good 38% of chicks present that were sportin' the "bandana-as-bikini-top" look.

9/22/87- U2 on the Joshua Tree tour with my older brother.

I'm very fortunate that my brother refused to take me to see Sting on his "Dream of the Blue Turtles" tour which was the first show I wanted to go to.  We were both Police fans, but he was wiser and knew even than that solo Sting was lame.  I learned that a couple years later.
