Tugboat Richie is leading the pack.

What time did Tugboat Richie call last night?  I listened to the second half of the show while I did other stuff, but I missed his call somehow.

I think he was real.

I'm pretty sure he was just a guy driving a tugboat who recognized the inherent humor of being a "tugboat captain".

Guys, we need to stop this madness.
The awards show was great, but ever since the calls have been self-conscious in a bad way. People angling for awards, etc. No good.

i can't speak for anyone else, but the fear of being accused of being another steve from north hollywood is why i was paranoid about calling. i didn't want to be perceived as angling for rookie of the year when i don't want that, i just want to say hi and that i love the show and maybe contribute to the topic.

anyway, i think that having my first call happen when tom, PBR and PFT were all in studio was actually a mixed blessing because it took the heat off me. i was shaking, i was so nervous! and very relieved that they took over.

True, but I have to admit to being amused by the pattern that is becoming familiar where Tom hints at a new caller's ROY potential and then proclaims the same caller a flame-out the following week. Casey's flame-out was particularly satisfying because of Tom's disgusted reading of the angry email.

To me, there are no bad callers--except for James and Ross and the like. Steve from North Hollywood bringing in the Kid From Drillbit Taylor is now just another great element TBS 2008. A memorable gomp is nothing to be ashamed of. You could argue that the origianal "shop for a coffin" guy was a bad caller, but that doesn't change the fact that he contributed a fantastic punchline. He could, and should, call again.

Eric Luxury is right, au natural is the way to go. Just be yourself, be well mannered and you'll find your niche in what is still fundamentally a comedy show.

Yeah you just sorta call and talk. If you're replying to a topic try to make it relevant but other than that it just comes down to not trying to overpower the show. At least that's what I've been doing.

(don't take my word for it though, according to parts of this board I'm a snooze.)

You can be a fan of the show, and also an enemy of Tom.  See, e.g., Spike.

Just listened to that clip.
Darn, I didn't realize Roy wanted to get me on the line. That e-mail was written more out of frustration with the way the first call ended than anger. I apologize if it can off as angry. Oh well, I suppose hanging out with Spike in the Dungeon for 5 years will be interesting. I'll see you all if and when I get out.
Take care,
Casey

That's abated a little bit, but I think the show might need a backup Spike just in case.

B_Buster, what are your thoughts on the new character-based caller Tugboat Richie? How, in your opinion, would he fare in a "Beat It"-style knife fight with Larry The Perv?

Also, the show thrives on a healthy diet of the full spectrum of calls, from flame outs to super calls.

Tugboat Richie sounds like a good guy. He sounds a little older than LtP (btw, I've already registered a trademark on "LtP" unbeknownst to LtP), but what he lacks in vigor, he makes up in experience. He also has access to heavy, blunt nautical instruments while all Larry has at his disposal is his digital video camera, some lube, and a box of "love toys."

Tugboat Ritchie in a rout!

You were forgiven long before that :) ... I was just fishing for an excuse to use the "Don't ___ me.  I ___ you." idiom.

Is idiom the right word?  Probably not.

I would like to point out though, that I did NOT ask to be nominated, I merely called in with a Slogan suggestion.  Sadly, it was that very same night that people started calling in "Rookie style!" with Jeff in Athens.  But, he was his own un-doing.

Well, anchors are heavy (that's the only nautical tool I can think of) especially the tugboat kind.

MikeBuster,

Serious answer:  Larry the Perv doesn't even know where Newbridge is.  You can make a slight case for Scag Winesack being in there, because he did pal around with the Gorch, and even Roger Tamblyn, since he called in during an early JW call, but the Andy Earles stuff deserves (?) its own listing, probably.

Even more serious answer:  I can't stand Larry the Perv.  I might be willing to do a Spike OrangeCrate-ictionary though.

Every caller from Chicago has to run the  "Do you like relish on your Cheerios" gauntlet, so I think Liz from Chicago is the ROY so far:  she's starting ten feet behind the starting line on every call.

"best caller" is relative.  i LOVED ross; when someone gets that angry, you have to laugh...because thats all there is to do.  i was cracking up.

audacious REAL callers are great.  but i also like julie's call, steve from N.H. first TWO calls (drillbit taylor call made me nervous...i knew that call was getting gomp'd, it was a matter of when), i always enjoy calls from:

samir
laurie
erika
evan in providence
SPIKE
abraham

I've called a few times.  My first call was actually pretty good - I told an anecdote about an actor friend who was on John From Cincinnati - but my next two were boring, boring, boring.  I'm no Steve from North Hollywood!

Actually it's mostly because of schedule - I've been listening to the archive and the podcast for a couple of months now - but even when that changes, the fact is that I am just not that interesting a caller.  I'm OK with it, I think I'm a decent conversationalist in real life, and obviously I'm pretty comfortable expressing myself by typing, but even in real life my phone calls are lame. I may call again someday if I can come up with an interesting response to a topic, but ya know.

Well, retroactively, then: welcome back to the boards, DFK.

I can actually do about 4 funny (or, more accurately, "funny") accents but I'm rusty, as I quit acting years ago.  And also I have this thing called dignity that I'm oddly attached to for some reason.

I try and follow the suggestion of Ollie Farunahken(sp??)

"Don't call unless you've got something to say."

"Getting to Know You" and games of that ilk are good chances to keep in the habit of calling without having to really bring anything to the table.
Title: Re: Best Callers of 2008
Post by: Dorvid Barnas on April 29, 2008, 01:16:30 AM
When I call I try to get to my point across as soon as possible and then stop talking, hoping that Tom will enjoy my response enough to riff on it. Some of the newer regular callers are forgetting that when you're on Tom's court, it's his ball.  Remember that he is funnier than you, so the more he's talking during your call, the better you're doing.
Title: Re: Best Callers of 2008

I'm pretty much on the same page as Dorvid. I always want to make sure whatever it is I have to say is relatively brief, because there's nothing worse for the show than someone who calls in with a lengthy story that never seems to end. Even if the story is interesting and something I'd probably laugh at were I hearing it at a party or something, it rarely works over the radio.

I agree.  I haven't called much, but each time I've said what I have to say as quickly as possible and then sat back and hoped that I wouldn't embarrass myself when I reacted to Tom's response.

That wasn't a shot at you, buddy.  You did me a major solid by getting me that audition and I'll always be grateful.

For those who are interested, I came VERY close to getting the lead in a Jason Grote premiere at DC's best theater company.  VERY close.  But then I didn't get it, for reasons so obvious that I couldn't help but feel helpless and angry - you know, like all actors.

Not my best anecdote but there you go.  That's what Jason and I had been speaking about in code for the last couple months.  Of course I bear him no ill will at all, and you DC FOT should definitely go see the play in September.  It's really amazing.

Thanks, Dorvid, you are sweet.  In case anyone is wondering, he is an awesome actor, and it came down to experience.  It was great to meet him, too, but compared to the other ways I've met FOT - at the WFMU record fair or at the station, over a $25 dessert, or at a Big Dipper concert - meeting for the first time over that audition table was probably the weirdest.

Also, in case you were wondering, Dorvid and I are that couple in FOTchan that didn't work out!  But we'll always be friends.

Now, back to the topic.

EDIT: waitasec, Dorvid, did you edit your post?  Anyway, good advice.  I will keep that in mind if/when I call again.

Yeah, when I called with that Madonna Inn/Motel 6 thing I was trying to make it as fast as humanly possible and it still came off as interminably long!  Lesson learned.  I learned this: If you're sitting around thinking "I gotta call the Best Show with this story!" you're probably wrong.
