Title: Best Show backlash?
Post by: cutout on April 29, 2008, 10:36:32 AM
In all these years of Tom bringing the hate (bless him) on major and minor characters in the entertainment industry, has anyone (obvious example: Kevin Smith) ever angrily responded or complained about Tom? I've heard all the faux-feuds (Poster Children), I'm wondering if the Best Show has caused any authentic ones.

Blood, Sweat, and Real Tears.

Jim DeRogatis (I don't think he was fighting mad exactly, but Tom removed a show where he was making sport of DeRogatis, presumably after some sort of dialogue with him ---??  But actually I kind of remember him already apologizing about that before the show was even over, though I can't be sure)

Tony Millionaire called Tom a dope on a message board. (http://www.tcj.com/messboard/viewtopic.php?p=25981#25981)

I tracked down the DeRogatis thing on Fluxblog (http://www.fluxblog.org/2004_01_07_newflux_archive.html), but the link is dead -- anyone have the audio?

wasn't DeRogatis in some Jersey band from back in the day?

Per wiki: DeRogatis plays drums in the indie rock band Vortis. He previously played in the bands the Ex-Lion Tamers (Wire cover band), Airlines and Speed the Plough.

Maybe I heard the wrong audio or only the beginning of the story, but I was under the impression that Tom defended DeRogatis and then went into an unfair record review of Ryan Adams, trashing him thoroughly. Is there more to this?

Millionaire later said this about the Sopranos: "This show was the best tv ever made, that's why it reduces geniuses like me and bill and coopy to rant about it on this dopey board."

Hopefully he was joking.

Thanks. I was thinking of Speed the Plough. That self-titled album was OK.

I thought it was that Ryan Adams issued an absurd response to a bad review, basically telling the guy that he had not right to criticize because, look how many people showed up.

My recollection is that Tom mostly made fun of Ryan Adams, and gave Adams an unfair record review, but after about a half hour of running hot with this, he also tossed off a few zingers about De Rogatis's looks.  I can't remember the comparison he made, but it was unflattering.  I'm remembering him sort of taking it back after playing some music, but I could be remembering wrong.  He definitely apologized to DeRogatis the next week and removed the archive like mid-week.  I don't know if DeRogatis is a listener or what, but the two actually share a fair amount of musical tastes (Moby excluded) and Rock, Rot, and Rule would seem to be directly up Jim's alley.  I think Tom just got carried away.  Whatever he said didn't seem that bad, but it was more like when you make fun of someone you actually kinda like, but you make fun of them when they're not around but then the person sitting across from you is pointing over your shoulder and then you turn around and that person is standing right there and they heard the whole thing and then you feel like shit.  So it probably doesn't constitute any "Best Show Backlash" phenomenon anyway, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned it.  Sorry!
